Your strategy is a flesh cut. Flesh cuts are most successful when they are near epiphytic root shoots and might perform a bit better, but are more prone to rot. Honestly, these plants are very resilient...Any cutting does fine as long as it's in the shade and doesn't get too cold or overwatered. We prefer a stem cut, where you cut the stem and most of the little "nub". It might be slower to grow, but it is more resistant to rot when rooted in water or soil. We prefer to grow cuttings in Fox Farms Happy Frog Potting Soil. It has humic acid and promotes root growth. We are also experimenting with more "unique" methods on our channel. Your plants will do well, thanks for sharing.
I bought a dragon fruit cutting….. But it’s taking FOREVER!!!!!!! Not sure what’s going on. Please take a look when you get a chance. Any tips, tricks, advice or criticism highly appreciated. Thank you 🙏🏽
Your right, I have been propagating dragon fruit for over 10 years, and live in a very wet climate. Also was taught by a Vietnamese guy, and have always just pruned, and stuck in the soil. Rarely have seen any cuttings that have not taken. So rare in fact, that can't even recall a time it have not worked.
Good for you. 😁 I'm sure some might find your advice useful but isn't your comment a little bit rude? Sounds like you have your OWN channel to tell all the ways "we do it this way... & We do it that way...." so why come here to step on someone else's and THEIR way of doing it on THEIR OWN channel? Maybe I'm wrong.... But....just saying....
Thank you for this video! Trimmed back some random cacti growing signs my palm tree (in FL) a couple of years ago mainly to avoid being stuck while getting my mail... A week ago I noticed some fuzzy things on the ground, realized they were deaf flowers, looked up at the palm tree & realized it was flowers from that random cactus! 😮 I'm new to gardening so didn't think much of that cacti... But after a little research I realized it's a Pitaya Dragonfruit! I feel so excited & blessed to have one of these beauties growing wildly in my own yard! & now I'm going to try to grow some from cuttings!! 🙏🏼🌵💮 😊
I bought some cuttings about a year ago and I used the water propagation. They rooted so quick! Planted them during spring, made sure to keep them somewhat moist and they took off!! They’re so big now!
Thank you for this video! I just scored a big hunk of dragon fruit that fell off of a clearance plant at Lowe’s. The guy said I could take it home and try to propagate it. It already has air roots on one section. This was the perfect video to watch before getting started and letting The cut ends dry out. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
I've been buying rooted cuttings but thought I'd try rooting my own cuttings. I tried the method of rooting with the stem cut to a nub. I let dry (scab over) and after 8 weeks... nothing. The cutting is still in great shape but I thought it would have rooted by now. Its been in the shade in very good weather. Originally I was going to use the EG method of cutting off an inch of the bottom but was convinced otherwise. I watched this video to reconfirm what I should do. My 4 unrooted cuttings I have now have been cut and are scabbing over as we speak. Hey Kevin nice job. You're the reason I started growing Dragon Fruit. After I watched your video on how you grew your first Dragon Fruit I thought it was something I would like to try. Now I'm starting a Dragon Fruit alley on the side of my house like Richard of Grafting Dragon Fruit just a little scaled down from his.....maybe... or so my wife hopes. Once you start it's hard to stop. 9 varieties so far and counting. Next stop....edible landscaping.
It worked for me . I have 3 varietys. And I am doing cutting to do the same set up. 4 per container down the road. The key is making sure they are completely scabbed over. ❤
I watched this video about 6-7 months ago. Took a 1 foot cutting from my rotting rusted dragon fruit plant. Waiting 2 days and planted it in a 1 gallon pot. After 2 months it was about 2 feet and has been climbing since. The cutting is now over 6 feet tall in less than a year and in a 1ft x1ft x 3 foot deep pot with a 6ft chemically treated stick and surprisingly still loves to root on it. I just refreshed my memory by rewatching the video and took a new 18inch cutting from the original plant and I am going to repeat the process.
I just found your channel (trying to get some tips on growing dragonfruit) so naturally I went through the 3 part video series, and now I can't stop watching all the videos!!
Awesome! I didn't know it was this easy. My sister-in-law had a gorgeous and very tall dragonfruit plant that she didn't care for anymore and she basically was going to leave it outdoors and let it die. I wanted it so bad, but didn't have the space for it and would have to drive it back to my home which was 6 hours away, so I didn't take it with me. Had I known back then, I would have taken cuttings and tried to grow my own. Good news is she will try to grow it again (she didn't want the other one because it didn't fruit, whereas I just loved the plant whether it fruited or not) and said she'll grow me one as well.
I know I'm really late but I'm wondering if it doesn't fruit because it is NOT self pollinating. I bet it needs to be pollinated at night when it blooms. Which I learned thru Epi Gardening.
I have a dragonfruit cutting a friend gave me a few months back, but it hasn't grown at all! I chunked it into some dirt in a wide 1 gallon pot but it has remained exactly the same size, although it hasn't withered either. Today, I decided to change its dirt in an attempt to see if I can get it to grow, and when I removed the dirt, I found that it had made plenty of roots, so I find it strange that it hadn't grown. I put in the same pot with only sphagnum moss mix this time and I moved it somewhere where it gets sun all day long. I hope it grows and gets as beautiful as your dragonfruit! Thanks for this informative video~
Could be the soil conditions! I would suggest a mix that's mostly high quality soil rich in organic matter, with a bit of topsoil or cactus mix to lighten it a bit. :That's worked for me.
Hello from Greece Kevin! please make an episode about the temperature that must the weather have so the dragon fruits grow better and the price of moisture!
My dragonfruit was growing like crazy on my apartment balcony. When we moved I had to cut it up to transport it. I WISH I knew I could save the pieces I cut off! But like you said this plant grows fastttt and is always so forgiving
I just watched your dragon fruit series and I can't wait to try it out on my dragon fruit plant. It is my first time owning one and now I have even more hope that I will do good.
Got my cutting off etsy for $14.00 . Poked my hands with no mercy. But got it planted. Fortunately for me it shipped precut. So hopefully it roots soon
I've found after doing this it's always better to start them off in the shade for a few months. I use to put them in sun and they would dry up and look bad. Then I placed them in full shade and wow, with in a week or two full green color and a few even produces fruits on a cutting about 9 inches long.
I found old Dragon Fruit lying flat on the ground in the garden of a property I just moved to in Brazil. Its pretty beaten up with rot every where. I think its best hope is if I take cuttings and try root those. I do t thunk ill find anything viable at the size of cutting you have . What the smallest cutting I could take and still have it viable. I'm not I a rush for it to grow big so I'd rather work as small as I can and try get some good numbers of plants
@Epic Gardening would you happen to have anymore cuttings to give/sell to a fellow gardener? I have one small cutting and would love more to start with. Your dragonfruit series is very educational and I love that you have experimented with things outside of the common things to grow. 😊
For growing dragon fruit from cutting no need to cut underneath of that cutting. Reason why not to cut because it will be fast to roots and not easy to rot. If I want to buy a cutting of dragon fruit I will purchase the uncut cutting one. It save of my money. By the way nice video tough.
Does dragonfruit likes music??..my loudspeaker is just near where they were planted..i play music every now and then, and suddenly they bear fruit more than there were before..also flowers..i play music whenever i water them coz im bored
We just bought 2 yellow plants to pot up after we cut the tops off to make four. later they will go into one big tub and grow around a post. We were also told not to include any fertiliser in the pots for the cuttings or they will die. Thanks for the video.
I’ve had issues with my cutting getting overly dehydrated as I wait for the end to callous. Any suggestions? Should I cut then place in a ziplock or humidity dome? I want to get the end calloused without ruining the cutting itself.

Wouldn't it be better to flood the cutting when it's just been planted and top up the planting mix as necessary? That way you're assured of good soil contact right from the get go and if you're using a sandy, gritty compost mix it should drain quickly to avoid rot...

Hi, a friend gave me a cutting and my husband put it in water for a few weeks. We noticed it started to sprout what look like roots. Would it be ok to plant it at this point? Or should we cut what’s sprouted, let it scab over then plant it? I’d hate for it to go to waste.
I'm going to try my first cuttings from my first dragon fruit that is kind of growing too big for the space I have for it , 8ts also a big mess that kind of grew wild , I want to restart it like you do with a "truck" make it look more like a tree ,right now it looks more like a crazy spider growing on itself , but I got a question , how long usually before you get flowers ? My first one is 3 years now and never had any but I'm quite far north with ~ 5h of sunlight in winter

I am doing my first dragon fruit this year starting with a 6 inch cutting. As it matures, should I plant more cuttings in the pot with it? It will be in a 25 gallon for a few years
Kevin I have two questions. One would Root Growing Hormone Powder be advised to use. Second question approxiamatly how long on average taking all conditions are met wil it take to produce fruit. I greatly appreciate your videos. Thank you
Thank you so much for your amazing content. One question if I may... My dragon fruit has not yet made fruit, should I wait until in bears fruit before I take my first cuttings? Thanks again Shalom
Aloha! I have some dragonfruit plants that have roots shooting out the side.. can I cut small segments with root and let dry? Or do I need to keep it whole and plant standing up?
I had a bunch of super leggy sections on a plant whose trellis (papaya) fell over. I took midsection cuttings where they scab on both sides. This should be ok right? Or do you really need to cut where it comes off the branch and leave the end intact? My impression is these things are pretty indestructible if they don’t rot.
is it better to root it in water first or should i just plant them in potting mix?? ive been trying to root this dragonfruit cutting i got from the grocery store for about 2 months and it hasnt rooted.....i cut it back and saw the fresh cambium....and im drying it out......i didnt let it dry out when i first got it....i just put it in a cup of water
Apologies if this is already addressed in the comments or elsewhere on your channel - but would you suggest using rooting hormone before planting these?
i suppose you could but like with a prickly pear or a pine apple crown or a succulent leaf the plant naturally wants to root itself you dont need any hormones.
Do i need some cactus mix in it, or could I use normal potting soil? Sorry, it's just my cuttings are going to get here before my cactus soil will lol.
I have 7 pitaya cuttings in the soil since november (it's warm climate here). The 6 of them are cut like in the video but the 7th, which is the smallest, has the little piece of tissue that you cut there. And I have to say that it is the only one that has roots. All the others don't do well, seem like they are rotting no matter what. I renew the cut to get rid of the rotten piece, wait 2 days and put them in the soil again but they don't seem to have a nice time. And I wonder why WHYY
I planted my cutting like 3 months ago, there was no growth at all. I just took it out to check if there are any roots but nothing! It looks like it's going to rot? :/ Can I do something to save it? Should I cut the bottom and replant it?
DF is amazingly agile fruit. You don't need to cut anything or wait. Just take any healthy piece of this cactus and stick it in soil. This video should have been 5 seconds long 😁
I don’t know what I have done wrong. I followed your step and it’s been a month and still no root and not to mention my cutting is getting soft and dehydrated. What did I do wrong? And how often should I water it?
Do you have a method for dragonfruit cuttings that works for you? Let me know :)
What zones do they grow in?
Cut the green off the stem and now you have a spike. Jam it down to the soil level and voila! I don’t bother drying them either.
@@rmg03c And it rooted and grew well?
Okami Yes.

Another tip you can put powder sulfur on the fresh cut tips (and other cacti) to heal it faster
I’m growing my dragon fruit from seed. I got the fruit from the grocery store. Your channel awesome, I’m learning so much!!!

From seed takes years, avg 7, to fruit.
I've done the same also about 4 years now, mine have good length and a lot of sprouts.

I’m guessing routing medium is not good do use?
If my cuttings are smaller than those will they still grow if I pot them?
I live in Washington state near Seattle and My dragon fruit is growing but its Small not big like yours. Am I doing something wrong?
You may want to cut off all rot and retry, keep in filtered sun and water minimally
thanks for sharing this video I'm new friend here
So ive had mine in a pot for about two months and the roots are small, I did not cut the ends like you did, ¿should I do that or just leave them?
Hey. I need an advice. My cuttings have small roots but the plants are turning yellow. Half green, half yellow. Would i be able to save them ? Thanks.

What is the best size pot to plant dragonfruit
Thank you for sharing Sir. God bless
How many gallons are those small pots? Gonna need a lot of them so trying to figure out what to buy.
Can I use an iron/metal frame?
DF is amazingly agile fruit. You don't need to cut anything or wait. Just take any healthy piece of this cactus and stick it in soil. This video should have been 5 seconds long 😁
Thank you!
Where can I buy dragon fruit plants from??
I don’t know what I have done wrong. I followed your step and it’s been a month and still no root and not to mention my cutting is getting soft and dehydrated. What did I do wrong? And how often should I water it?
Same here! What am I doing wrong?
