In Britain we have the Sale of Goods Act. If someone sells you goods that are shoddy, broken, not fit for pirpose, or not as advertised, you're entitled to repairs, or to return it for a refund, or technically you can ask for a good replacement (even if it was shop-soiled goods sold in a sale). If the shop refuses, you can contact the town's Trading Standards office, who might take them to (criminal) court on your behalf. They might even lose their trading licence.

    • @alexjames6029
      @alexjames6029 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Indeed, people also don't know that a shop can't charge you the retail price of an item if you break something and then have to buy it, this is because by law shops are not allowed to make a profit on breakages; therefore they have to charge the wholesale price.

Great reaction Joel, You must have been so disappointed with the car. I had a similar experience with a remote control spider my son desperately wanted, that broke almost immediately.
However Pound shops have their place and are very useful for stickers and little toys to go in kids party bags etc

Haha you just reminded me that as a kid i asked my parents for my first remote control car (I'm female but grew up with two bothers and a street full of boys so i loved all things that they liked lol), anyway, it was this kinda yellow buggy type car and it had a tiny wire attached so as you say you had to walk around with it. Yes the batteries died quickly so it just hummed when you turned the switch on and i dont think i bothered with it again. It was kinds disappointing not that i would ever have said. I'm not sure where they got it but hehe thanks for that memory i'm in my forties now so forgot about it until now.

Yes. I did buy 2 tins of Morrison's own air freshener sprays a few weeks ago. I went to use one & it wouldn't spray. I tried again & all the stuff oozes out in liquid form, so I had to throw it away. I bought another this morning, but it's a brand named one.

The *2nd biggest Pound Shop chain in the UK* started in my city, not that anyone realises.
The founder sold the chain to some Americans, and they went bust within a few years.
The founder has since set up another Pound Shop chain to help re-employ some of the workers who lost their jobs when the Americans ruined the original company.
He even had his own TV show from 2012 to 2015 called *Pound Shop Wars.*

As you appear to enjoy British humour, one of my own sons who attended high school in the US, loved the series Blackadder, featuring Rowan Atkinson (Mr Bean) and Hugh Lourie (Dr House). As a taster, and assuming you know something of the Great War, try the sketch entitled How the War Began, which was part of one episode of the final series.

Your Dollar Store story is so spot-on. They are such a con. “Remote controlled car”…. The clue is in the name ….. “REMOTE controlled”. NOT “20-foot controlled car”!!!!
Also, just as a ‘nothing comment’ really: the three jam jars that Nan was looking at, aren’t attached to each other, the way you mention. That’s just the packaging, it keeps them together like that, until you undo the packaging tape!! 👍🇬🇧🇺🇸

There was a documentary on over here about 2yrs ago basically outing all the big brand pound shops! We have some here that are part of a chain like your DollarStore they're called Poundland, and Poundworld- two separate companies. The documentary stated that they've gotten so powerful now that they can have items made by legit manufacturers such as Kellogg's, Nestle, etc in smaller quantities and volume to sell in the shops so you think you're getting a bargain, but they're not because in a supermarket you might get a bigger version of the same items for £1.20 so there is no logic buying at the pound shop. The one seen in the sketch is likely a small family fun one we also have them dotted about in towns, but the bigger ones I mention are in 90% of the main shopping areas. I'm in Manchester and I've lost count how many we have now.

Ten year old me probably would have been impressed by the car on a wire. We had the Computer Battleship game, that had no computer element, but it did have lights. I recall being impressed on visiting my cousin, that they had a remote control TV, which was a box with a knob on it that you could switch between any of the three channels. The remote was connected to the TV with a wire, still at least you couldn't lose it!

That remote control car might have been old stock from years ago. I remember my friend having a 'car on a leash' growing up. Until they upgraded to radio controlled cars later (leash free!). The remote controlled ones were so slow and you just kind of walk alongside them. So I feel your pain. Compared to a radio controlled car they're rubbish. At least that's what I was told is the difference between remote and radio controlled vehicles. I'm certainly no expert. I hear people say remote control cars even now so maybe that's become the name for both now?

And my pound shop story that always makes me laugh when I remember it:
Our local pound shop was called 'Crazy Mick's pound shop' it was just one of those typical generic stores with a stupid made up name. My friend bought a pencil sharpener in there that proved to be a bit defective and so my friend marched straight back in there, slammed the pencil sharpener on the till and shouted 'I want to speak to Crazy Mick now!'. it won't anything to Americans, but I don't know what's in the water where I live, but Poundstretcher, Pukka Pies and Wilko's ALL originated less than 5 minutes walk from my house.

Not being rude or anything, and no offence meant by this so please don't take any. But it sounds that all three started In your local area, it may be an area with above normal levels of social deprivation/lower income.
People tend to start business's in accordance to the local trading conditions, i.e in my local area cos it's students, there's a tonne of student bars, fast food and supermarkets. But it's also close to an affluent post grad area so there's also very expensive delis and stuff where people with more money than sense go.

No 'offence' taken. I wouldn't consider the area where those businesses originated as particularly ‘Deprived’ (unless, that is, you would consider NOT having tennis courts, swimming pools and helicopter pads in your back garden as ‘Deprivation’). There are pockets, however, where you would quite literally ‘Have to be’ a millionaire to live there. I met the ‘Poundstretcher’ guy numerous times and I wouldn't have called him ‘Affluent’ at the time (but if he is still connected to the franchise I would imagine he is now). Also, the son of the Wilco’s owner used to date the sister of one of my X-girlfriends at the time and I would say he already came from a very affluent family. Mainly because he was a toffee nosed, plumb mouthed arrogant Uni prick. But I wouldn't call the overall area, as it was back then, a particularly Low income area. But that all depends on your definition of a ‘Low Income’ area. Nevertheless, I would guess they have all done extremely well for themselves.

There are a few £1 shops in my local town and I visit them because they have things like padlocks, cable ties, charging cables, kitchen utensils, pet toys and treats (I have lots of dogs). I enjoy walking about looking at everything because you never know what you will find. I bought some stick on vinyl tiles last week for £1 each. They are 3D and you literally can't tell that they aren't ceramic tiles. It's transformed my kitchen.
The things I would *never* buy are food and drink because the quality is very poor.

To answer your question, Catherine Tate is still alive and is only in her 40s. She also plays a schoolgirl, who is equally foul mouthed. An question you asked was, about Daley Thomson. He was a famous British athlete who did pentathlons and won shitloads of medals. Love your channel

I used to hate those improper RC cars. People would buy them for my sons birthday and the cheap ones only had 'forward' or 'reverse + turn-left together on one button' -- almost completely useless!

Have you watched Absolutely Fabulous (AbFab) or Mrs Brown's Boys? They are also two funny Brit shows..
And yes those corded "remote" control cars are shit.. The ones that only go forward or reverse left suck always having to make 3 point turns to turn around etc are the worst..
