As I've lived in 3 continents in the last five years, you'll hear all about my growth and progression in the local context. Please keep in mind that salaries are relative to your individual experience, location, local tax rates and the company you work for.

    Loving all of these videos Femke! I'm currently making 75k USD at a job that I really really dislike. I was considering going to grad school for the field I am in now but I have always been interested in design and more creative fields. I have been working on a UX/UI portfolio for quite some time now and am finally going to start applying to creative jobs. I am worried that I will have to take a pay cut in the new field, but I know that even a 50% pay cut would make me happier in the long run if I work at something that I enjoy. It is refreshing to see that you came from a business background and that your pay has been quite diverse. Thank you!

    • @topgun213

      it's called supply and demand. it has nothing to do with how much YOU think you are worth, it has everything to do with how much the company/society thinks you are worth. If you think you are more valuable, quit the job and find another or prove to them your worth, don't expect handouts in life. No one is going to just give you money just cuz

    • @chrmez
      @chrmez 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Not every designer is worth as much as they think either. So it goes both ways. Maybe 1 out of 200 applications I get is from somebody I would actually consider to invite for an interview. So you can imagine how many entitled designers walk around thinking they are worth top level salaries when they actually aren't even going to set their foot in the door. Let alone roll in money.

    OMG I’m so happy to find your channel! :-D I’m a dual NZ/Canadian citizen living in Toronto and taking a GradDip InfoSci at Massey online. I’m going into the design side of tech - likely UX/UI. I’ve been anxious about choosing the design side of IT even though arts, crafts, and design are a life-long passion because software dev was seeming more “responsible”. This is a career change and I’m look for both financial stability and to be working with an awesome team of people.

    Thanks for sharing!! I really appreciate when designers can be fully transparent about their salary history. As a Product Designer, I was able to increase my salary by $20K MORE just within 2 years!! 😁 And I haven't been doing product design for that long. I was still in my early entry-level stages. My ultimate goal was to land a role as a Product Designer on a team working on big digital projects and I've been in my role for only 1 week so far but definitely looking to continue gaining more experience under my belt. But this is REALLY insightful and you're helping MANY designers...😉

    Thank you Femka for this video! It's important to start talking about money and stop being ashamed of that.
    As you said at the end, the real salary value depends of things such as taxes (the most important one) and rent. It's important to measure how much money you have on hand after this 2 factors :)
    I'm living in Germany today, and 66% of my salary goes away in between taxes, health insurance and rent.

    Well done for having the courage to share and remember the numbers. Not sure I remember all mine.
    I think the numbers we less interesting than how you confidently negotiated and also got extra benifits of moving country as these tend to help with visa and getting settled.
    From my experience you can quickly grow early in your carrier in salary as you prove yourself but have to be willing to move. The bigger companies have the structure to offer raises and promotion but you might find happier learning in small teams. When you get to mid level after 5-10 year you can find your salary doesn’t change so much as you are at market rate. You then need to think if you want promotion or could add extra skills to push higher (or again change job)

    Kiaora! I'm a kiwi living in Nashville TN working primarily as a frontend designer/developer, but interested in learning more about UXD stuff lately. Stoked, I found your channel. Anyway, great info from your videos!

    Great tips!! It’s always good when a company offers you a fair transferred wage when moving countries, I was lucky to have that when moving to Melbourne. Unfortunately I did experience some hiccups with not pushing enough to negotiate on salaries when taking new jobs causing me to fall back 13k in a year and having only recently got back to my final salary from 3 jobs ago. Eek! Not that money is everything but as women we definitely undervalue ourselves too much.

    Thank you SO MUCH for sharing! :) If would be so beneficial to most people if we could manage to give an end to the salary taboo.
