    Thank you for this video! I feel like a lot of people romanticize the idea of product design because so many people talk about the perks of being a product designer in tech. But there’s definitely some drawbacks. I do still love product design overall though

    I really appreciate this video! Im working towards becoming a UX Designer currently and i've been trying to find cons of the job but i couldn't. This is really needed as so many people glamorise the role so you kind of get blind sided by the perks of the job. Thank you so much for your insight :)

    Second one is so real. So so real. Living this reality right now. Being asked to do something you didn't sign up for is just... it doesn't feel nice, especially when you applied for literally another position with a different job description. Glad to hear someone talking about it, feels great being understood 😂

    Great video, I just subscribed 💕 You really hit the nail on the head with these pain points. The designing to prove a point piece is so ridiculous, that's always the moment when I'm like "why they even paying me to do this 🙄"

    Thanks so much for this video. My main gripe is feeling like I HAVE to be an expert at everything. My main strength lies in my visual and UI Design skills, but that's usually not enough. Everything has to be a hybrid role nowadays.

    • @LindaAhn
      @LindaAhn  2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Yeah I totally get that. I guess it really depends on the company too. The smaller it is, the more responsibilities that are put on you.

    • @Mike-ce6vr
      @Mike-ce6vr 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@LindaAhn Many years ago it used to only be smaller companies. However, in 2022 I would argue the need to be a hybrid designer is more even at the larger FAANG companies. The days of a company hiring you as a designer to only do one aspect of the UX/UI stack are few and far between.

      According to what you mention, then you should maybe work as UI designer instead of UX designer. These are two different job tittles 😉🙂

    • @lorrieuiux5802
      @lorrieuiux5802 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, I'm more or less referring to expectations set by some companies to kinda box you into a hybrid role. I know the difference between UI and UX, but a lot of companies don't.

    Honestly like most industries you need to be more assertive for pay rises. I've known both men and women getting paid more than me in this industry for a variety of reasons. However, one thing I've learned in reflection of my junior product designer years was being too passive at yearly pay reviews. It really holds you back. Start learning to negotiate as early as possible. Honestly the company always has more budget, and whether it's a recruiter or manager. There is always someone with a incentive to get you as cheap as possible. If you undersell yourself during application phases you'll be playing catchup for a long time.

    Ugh the business needs always trumping user needs is something I hit me so hard. When I got hired the pitched the idea that we are advocating for our users as designers. Yet every time I Am compromising my designs because it’s beyond scope for the work….. it’s so frustrating

    Thank you for your transparency! It's nice to hear from people and their experiences. I too do not like the forced social engagements. It doesn't take into account for some work itself is enough stimulus. Anything more than that and our social battery is depleted and over extended.

    Omg! I related to when you said being forced to do things you’re not interested in. I live UX design and the whole idea behind it, but I hate research and struggle a lot coming up with interview questions. I’m a more visual person interested in how the interface is laid out and user accessibility, and which colors I can and shouldn’t use together what elements should or shouldn’t be there and so I want to be a UI designer not really a product or ux designer. I just love UI design and being able to design accessible features for all people

    • @LindaAhn

    Wow this shit hits hard - worked in an agency for several years where UX research wasn't respected (even when we were hiring other UI designers), and the junior designers didn't want to have design critiques. Eventually I just bored and peace'd out. Most of all I hope you're being respected for your work and you're (on the sly) chatting with other companies so you're being paid right ^^

    Great video, I can relate to many of the points you talked about as a mid-level designer myself.
    On the topic of designing for business needs over user needs, or even just designing things to prove a point: I usually rely on data and research to defend my decisions or communicate why I chose a specific design over another, especially to execs that see the value in metrics and data over design. By understanding your audience and what they care about, you can frame your message so that you get your point across. Storytelling is also a great tool to incorporate into your communication to help your audience empathize with the problem through examples. But also, perhaps look at joining a company that values design at the leadership/C-level and has invested in cultivating a design culture. Also, these companies usually have a clearer path outlined to help you advance to the next level in your design career.
    On the topic of designing what you want to: Perhaps look for a company that creates products you're interested in or is in an industry you care about. Research their products before making a decision to join a company. As a designer for b2b software, I don't really relate to the products that I work on, but find the problem space challenging and interesting. Still in the future, I'd also like to work on products that align more with my interests, perhaps on the consumer side.
    On the topic of interview process: Agreed, especially when companies require whiteboard challenges, which I don't think are a good judge of whether or not someone is a good designer.
    On the topic of compensation: Lots of salary info on Levels.fyi or Blind app, mostly tech. I also found interviewing and asking for the salary range up front will give you a better idea of what companies are willing to pay. If you're in Canada, expect to make 30% less (and in CAD) than if you worked in a US tech hub.

    • @LindaAhn
      @LindaAhn  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      wow thanks for such a detailed comment. I definitely agree with all the points you mentioned. It almost feels like to get the outcome we want, we always have to go above and beyond what's expected. Sometimes good and sometimes bad haha.

    • @giuseppenativo2123
      @giuseppenativo2123 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Would you prefer to live in the USA and make a 30% plus and paying for everything, like your healthcare insurance, the crazy cost of the drugs, your private retirement contract, the cost of a disfunctional society that create the fifty percent of the whole world pollution, a government that invest your money in defence systems and military contractors instead of public services? It's a question, no mean to provoke. Thanks.

    • @ericchung7555
      @ericchung7555 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@giuseppenativo2123 First, 30% more without conversion is more like 65% more in total. Ie. 100k CAD = 130k USD. Assuming most tech employers in the U.S. should have health insurance covered, even if you had to pay a couple thousand out of pocket for whatever reason, the extra savings in USD outweighs the potential uncertainty of requiring serious medical attention as a young healthy adult. At least from my perspective.

    • @giuseppenativo2123
      @giuseppenativo2123 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ericchung7555 thanks for your opinion. From my point of view, (having an American spouse that works with corporations in the USA) and being a European in my forties (read: i started having little health issues), i really would prefer to be a Canadian citizen or the owner of a green card and earn less, living better in a safer environment, with the universal healthcare. The quality of life in the USA is incredibly poor if you compare it to every European country, Canada and Australia and the cities are crazy dangerous. Is still that famous 30% worth the jump?

    • @ericchung7555
      @ericchung7555 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@giuseppenativo2123 Absolutely depends on your career goals and stage of life. My situation is different from yours. I would choose USA for growth and Canada for retirement.
