I've been sewing for over 65 years. I've gone thru phases of sewing: my clothes, clothes for kids, household items, etc. I now make bags and sometimes do interesting wall hangings (mostly for holidays). I was new to jelly rolls and no one ever really explains how to use them creatively. I do not make quilts because I don't use them. But I love making totes. This was a fun video. I stayed thru the whole thing because I didn't want to miss anything. Tammy is a great teacher. Loved it.
❤❤❤❤❤ Love all the details you explain and the close ups so we can clearly see what you are doing. For example, the welt pocket directions and close ups are so clear that even a beginner can do it. Well done!😊
She is a very thorough teacher! I’ve made many bags but got a couple of new tips from her. This would be an awesome video for newer and experienced quilters alike. 😊
I love your tutorial videos, Tammy! I always learn something new, and I can follow all your steps. Thank you for not rushing through and assuming people know as much as you do. Your patience and your detailed explanations make such a wonderful difference in my sewing and quilting. I appreciate you demonstrating how to use the tools. You are the best! I love Shabby Fabrics!
Thanks Tammy. You are an incredible teacher. Thank you for your patience. This is an awesome bag! Love that there wasn't a seperate lining. Merry Christmas ❤
Thank you, Tammy for explaining the difference between Shape Flex and Fusible Fleece. I haven't used either of those before. I appreciate knowing about all the tools you used. I actually have never made a bag before but watching this tutorial has given me the confidence to do so. Thanks very much❣️
Hi, I’m so happy I found your channel tonight. This was a wonderful tutorial. Thank you kindly for sharing. Right now my sewing machine is in storage. I’m will be moving soon about 4-5 months. I have lots of jelly roll from yrs ago in my container with all my sewing material. I’m getting itchy to get back to my sewing. The first thing I learned ( I didn’t even know how to read a pattern!) was to make a lined suit with button holes. In those days the machines did not have button hole makers in the machines so you made them by hand. I made a lined jacket and lined skirt. It wwas the summer I was entering high school so I was maybe 14. Fell in love. Again you now have a new subscriber and you made me a very happy lady ❤❤gayle
Thank you, for the tote bag, demonstration!! Yes, I have sew up an opening!! That's why I can not, listen to music, while sewing !! I gets too excited and mess up my projects!! 😂❤
You are an awesome teacher! You had such great clarity in the details, made easy to follow ❤. Thank you for the awesome lesson. Will be definitely making one.
Awesome job on the jelly-roll bag! I ❤ the colours! This is a great way to make a bag without having to make a separate lining because it is made all in one piece. I have made bags before, but not with this method. It's great!🤗 ❤❤❤ the turning tools and shape flex.😊 Thanx for the in-depth explanations and overall great video!🎉
This tote is so beautiful! We have it in other colors as well! Here is a link to check them out! www.shabbyfabrics.com/search?sortOrder=6&q=Jelly+roll+tote 😊 Happy that you enjoyed this project and that it will help you! Thanks for your support and comment! ❤️🥰 - Abby
Love this bag! Wish I saw this yesterday, started a bag from left over strips. This would have been a much better way to do it. Next time! Thanks for the wonderful tutorial Tammy❣️
Such a stunning tote bag! That is a great idea, next time if you have any left over, this is the perfect project! Thank you for your support and comment! ❤️ - Abby
We want to make sure that our videos are as understanding and clear as possible for you to understand. Thanks for your comment and Merry Christmas and Happy New Year! - Abby
I'm making my 2nd tote using this pattern (just using the video guidelines). For the first tote, I followed your pattern and instructions. For this one, I'm cutting my strips at 5" as I found using jelly roll strips to be very labor intensive - sewing, top-stitching and ironing. I wanted this one to be faster and easier. My one issue with your tutorial (and really all SF tutorials) is the length or size you leave for the openings. I probably only leave half the size opening you do and had no problems whether it was the bowl covers, napkins, placemats, etc. Overall, a great video Tammy! Thanks and keep 'em coming!
We appreciate your support and happy that you enjoy our tutorials! What ever works for you with making these projects is up to you. Thank you for your comment! - Abby
This is a great tutorial! Even for beginners because there is a lot of great steps and explanations! Happy that you love it and thanks for your comment! ❤️ - Abby
I love your tutorial videos. I usually preview the video on 1.5 to 2x the playback speed (found in Settings) to get an overview. During the project which sometimes takes me a few days to complete doing only sections at a time, I'll stop and go or play at slow speed the section. So, it does not matter to me if your videos are long or short. What matters is that I'm able to stop, slow down, or jack-rabbit through them! 🙂 Gratefully yours, "dac weekend"
Lamento no hablar inglés, para decirte en tu idioma lo hermosa que te quedan las bolsas. Gracias por todos los detalles y por mostrar el uso correcto de algunas herramientas. 😊
Nice approach to that outside pocket; aka a quick and easier version of a laborious welt pocket. The box measurement-you can also measure 3” from the triangle tip of the folded seam. You can see it as she measures the 6” line.
I so loved this video!! And your voice is so pleasant to listen to. You never rush the process but stay focused on the project. I look forward to watching more videos. I’m getting a jelly roll to make this tote🥰
Hi, I like this bag, the only thing I would make different is that I would add a closure to the front pocket. Actual I can't really say what, a magnetic one, a flap or loop and button, but definitely a closure and I don't think about a zipper. Many greetings from Germany, love ❤
Tammy great video love the way you went really really slow AND I felt the other big help was your Over head camera !!!! I just love it when an over camera is put into place, it really helps me to see what the crafter is really doing !!! Thank you for your video!!!! Really love your tote bag !!!
Very informative video. Personally I would have used the strips on the outside of the bag and a matching/contrasting fabric for the pockets and lining. What make and size is your cutting board?
Hi Mary - The cutting board on this set is a Mega Mat by Quilter's Rule. We've recently updated our set and now use a large Creative Grids Self-Healing, Double Sided Cutting Mat. Hope this helps :) -Michelle
This is a wonderful video. Everything is explained so well. I think we will have a girlfriend sew in over New Year's and make this fun tote bag. Thank you so much.
Another great video!! Your bag is very pretty and practical! I made a jelly roll bag for my daughter a couple of years ago, but the process was more complicated than this one! I look forward to your tutorials in the new year! Happy New Year to you all!
Happy that you enjoyed this tutorial! That is awesome, I bet she loved it! We appreciate your support and comment! Merry Christmas and Happy New Year! - Abby
I love the bag and the tutorial was the best I have seen. I like to have one zipper pocket to keep my keys or money safer. Would it be hard to change the inside pocket to zippered?
Happy that you love this tutorial! If you'd like to attach a zipper to the inside pocket, you may. However, with the process that Tammy is demonstrating here, you'll want to add your zipper to the pocket prior to attaching it to the inside of the tote. We would suggest adding it about an inch down from the edge of the pocket (and possibly increasing your fabric size), and you would probably not be able to add sewn sections. Hope this helps! 😊 - Abby
Happy that you love this project! We have a kit or pattern that you can purchase, here is the link to shop: www.shabbyfabrics.com/search?sortOrder=6&q=Jelly+roll+tote Hope this can help and thanks for your comment! - Abby
That is awesome to hear! We are currently out of this tote kit but we do have a pattern that you can purchase! Here is the link for the pattern as well as some other tote bag kits: www.shabbyfabrics.com/search?sortOrder=6&q=Jelly+roll+tote Hope this can help and thanks for your comment! - Abby
I’m wondering if you could leave the selvage that doesn’t have the words on since it would be in the seam? Or would that create problems? I’m new to sewing tote bags and using jelly rolls.
Hi CJ - Tammy says that would be fine. I believe the tote body is cut down once the strips are sewn together and quilted so that's where we would cut the selvages off. Hope this helps! -Michelle
You can use SF101 but it is much thinner and you won't get that extra padding that fusible fleece or typical batting would provide. Hope this helps and thanks for your comment! - Abby
Hi Alli - The double needle isn't necessary - we did find it a time saver because it means we didn't have to turn our project as much to go up & down the rows, and it does make for some lovely topstitching, but it's not necessary. Hope this makes sense :) -Michelle
I'm making my 3rd tote as a wedding shower gift and I'm confused about the pocket measurement. First you say to mark the top line down 1.25 inches and 1.25 inches in from the side. When you wrap up the measurements you say the top line is 1.5" down from the top. Maybe you mean the rectangle is a total of 1.5" down. Not sure why I wasn't confused the other times or what I did but, would you please clarify?
@@ShabbyFabrics I was referring to the first pocket but I was able to finish it using the 1.25" down for the top mark. And, it came out perfectly! Thanks.
I've been sewing for over 65 years. I've gone thru phases of sewing: my clothes, clothes for kids, household items, etc. I now make bags and sometimes do interesting wall hangings (mostly for holidays). I do a half stitch to all my bags because of wear and tear….there are some ladies out there who are a lot “rougher” than we are…. I love your bag.
Great Video! Ordered a kit. I don’t want to use a double needle, so do you just sew 1/4 inch on each side of the seam?
Yes, you would topstitch along both sides of the seam. Hope this helps :) -Michelle
Thanks for sharing
We’re happy you enjoyed this fun project! Thank you for watching 😍 -Michelle

😊 - Abby
I think even I may be able to do that type of pocket.
This is a great project and these pockets are awesome! Happy that you love this tote and thanks for your comment! - Abby
