Zombie spider man broke me as a kid. This guy was like a big brother to me and seeing all of this happen to him, to say the least made me a middle of upset and sad.
IIRC on the first Marvel Zombies he explains that the reason he keeps cracking jokes is to try to stay calm and keep his sanity. It boost his confidence and makes him feel on even ground while fighting villains.

And he decided if heroes no longer have to play by the rules, if morality could be completely thrown away by what's supposed to be a paragon of justice, then why hold back anymore? Flint Marko probably always knew he could kill people like that but wouldn't because he still felt like there's supposed to be some sort of basic civility to life itself, even if he is a criminal there is some very low bar of honor that even a villain can meet, which provides some sense of normalcy and decency to existence itself. But zombie Spider-Man broke his mind and his faith in such civility.
Marvel zombies is just brutal in general. I mean hell, the zombie heroes basically wipe out all life in the universe thanks to their insatiable hunger.

Sometimes the Comics are a little too weird with the characters. Reed Richards becomes suddenly obsessed with the Virus and turns the fantastic 4 into Zombies after they actually survived mostly. Magneto suddenly becomes super heroic and sacrifices himself to save the last survivors.
These Marvel Zombies are pretty different from Regular ones in something like Zombieland or the Walking Dead Marvel zombies still maintain most of their consciousness, intelligence and personality. Pretty cool and I wonder what the artist was going for with that, perhaps the interpretation is this is the moment where Zombie Spiderman finally fully wins out over his fading Peter Parker persona, fully giving in to his new animalistic nature thus "devouring" his old self and discarding its flesh.
I thought this comic was semi comedic, the way that the zombi hunger for human flesh overtakes his genuine want to do something good in the beginning and how the story starts out as if he is going to find a solution as in the old fashioned story form, but just ends as brutally as possible.

It’s not entirely impossible though. Even if he were to dodge out of the way, Sandman could have just kept coming after him. This could happen to a lot of Spider-Man variants out there, it just doesn’t cuz Sandman never wants to actually kill Spider-Man.
These Dark Comics seem very accurate. Characters and Heroes die unexpectedly sometimes brutally. Seem more practical than heroes fighting the same villains for a span of long time.

Marvel Zombies is one of my favorite comic books ever. The philosophy/concept of metahumans in which they did everything to save lives begin transforming into conscientious undead beings that crave for the flesh of the innocent makes you terrified and VERY thoughtful, after that the world goes post-apocalyptic in 24 hours. The parts that horrified me the most were when Spider-Man devours his family in Dead Days, Tony Stark from Earth-91126 sacrificing himself in Marvel Zombies Return and Arno Stark's Death in Marvel Zombies 5. Truly one of the best craziest stories I've ever seen, my favorite is Marvel Zombies vs. Army of Darkness.
I feel like the whole existance of the concept of a multiverse in both DC and Marvel comics is an excuse so writters can just decide to break their toys when they dont want to play with them anymore and still publish it as a great comic, without altering what they decide is canon
Kinda yeah. It’s really just a way to expand a writer’s creative vision and do whatever they want with it. It’s the reason why character’s like Spider-Gwen, Miles Morales, Spider-Man 2099, Spider-Pig and a lot more cool variants can exist
