Probably one or two cool roadies and guitar techs thrown in there too. Don't forget the sound mixers on all the albums but their first two. The first two are mixed fine, just not as perfect as the rest.
It's both. Specifically about L Ron Hubbard (Captain and 512 references) but after he goes, there will always be the next cult leader ready to take his place.
Ænema actually references this individual "by name" who Maynard has dedicated Eulogy to on several occasions. Can't wait to see your reaction on that! Ha! This is SO fun!
During the beginning of the song, the "instrument" you were having trouble figuring out is Maynard singing through his 'bullhorn' microphone while pulsing the trigger. PS: They always recreated this live just like we heard it here. No extra instruments were used in the studio.
Another great reaction, interpretation, and you picked it again! Maynard actually used a megaphone for his distorted parts in this song, and not only that, that interesting sound/tune at the beginning that you commented on, that's him doing that through the megaphone too. One thing I want to touch on, I've been listening to this song for 23 years now and that's the first time I've thought about it in the context of making an announcement over the sound of construction going on around, with the idea being that they're already moving on. Brilliant interpretation and that fits in so well with the theme of the song. Well done! 🤘

Early on Maynard had some not so subtle misgivings & criticisms of organized religion. Some related to the observance of his mother's demise/death and her religious convictions if which he really struggled with. Jimmy, Judith (by perfect circle) the Patient, the Pot, Wings for Marie 1&2 all deal with his mother and showcase his catharsis via the lyrics and music. It's powerful. You picked the right band to exercise the brain by deciphering lyrics and making you think, and you seem to enjoy it. Personally, 'Right In Two' and 'Ænima'' by Tool might be a bit more strait-forward lyrically, but they'll give you that sarcastic vibe that Maynard is so good at delivering.
Dude you are very good at breaking down these lyrics from their songs. Btw, a lot of TOOL fans are also Radiohead fans so they’ll check out those reactions if you start hitting up that band also 👍🏼
As another half-deaf dude, I feel your pain. I listened to Tool before I lost my left ear and it's a shame having to take them in mono, but it is what it is.
Please give us some Radiohead! Here’s some favorites of mine: 15 Step, Everything in its Right Place, The National Anthem, Where I End and You Begin, Exit Music (For a Film), Burn the Witch, I Might Be Wrong, You, Lucky
Thumbs up for Radiohead! No Surprises, Exit Music For A Film, Karma Police, Electioneering, Lucky, Climbing Up The Walls and Street Spirit are my personal favorites!
The “meh meh meh meh meh meh” sound in the intro is done by Maynard. He’s got what I can only describe as a very small megaphone, and he’s tapping the button to create that effect. If you listen very very very closely, you can hear him sustaining the note, but it’s hardly audible. Saw them do it live once. And yes to Radiohead. Try their song Paranoid Android.
In a previous response, Jersh mentioned that he had only heard Creep and "one other song that had an animated video". I wonder if he is referring to Paranoid Android. If not, Jersh needs to hear that one. It's a BANGER!
that's the one i've heard so can't do an official reaction but could still listen to it for the first time in more than a decade and analyze the lyrics as i have no clue what they are

LuckykidA It only grows with the help of viewers who are interested in what I’m putting out, thanks for watching any of my videos for any amount of time no matter how big or small the channel is :)
🤔Hmmm... Maybe for the sake of reaction integrity, forget Paranoid Android, and go with How To Disappear Completely, or Subterranean Homesick Alien. There’s a really interesting live version of the song Give Up The Ghost from a show called The Basement. The singer plays the song while the lead guitar player uses a machine to tape, loop, and stack what the singer is playing so he can harmonize with himself live. It is so interesting to watch them do, and sounds so good. Not sure if it’s easy to find that footage, though.
Like many Tool songs there are multiple meanings in each song. The whole Ænema album is dedicated to Bill Hicks, who had died a year earlier. Some of the songs in the album and some of the clips in the album include him. In an interview, Maynard states this is about L. Ron Hubbard, in others, he states, it has a more general meaning, of any religious leader. The song also has verses that do apply to Bill Hicks.
You're right, there's alot going on with the song in general. It seems to be lambasting anyone who constantly sticks their nose in every topic there is. It's like all these people on social media who are an expert on any and every topic that comes up. It's almost like some people are afraid to say they don't understand a topic enough to give a good opinion about it. Been trying to think of a new band for you to try out, as well. Not sure really where you like to sit musically outside Tool and Deftones. But you do seem to really enjoy music with actual messages to it. In that regard, have you ever listened to the band 'Live'? They have some songs like "The Beauty of Grey" and "Operation Spirit (The Tyranny of Tradition)" that have a good meaning behind them.
In the 90's at a concert I went to he said this song was in reference of the Waco, TX siege and the leader saying he was Jesus and his following he had.
I'd love to see you do Radiohead. If you're going to do it, I'd suggest going through their stuff in chronological order as they're a band that have have distinct periods where their musical style has changed dramatically and you could take that journey.
If you are interested in checking out how this is done live, there is a really good live clip from 1996, live in Glass house. Eulogy starts at around 13:30. Here's the link if you want to check it out: th-cam.com/video/BfLCHTRIxtk/w-d-xo.html By the way, I love the way you dissect these songs!
I'm gonna suggest a different song on every video, I think. Aenima, the title track, is a song you should definitely check out. This whole album has a mood, and you seem to dig it. Hope the influx of viewers and videos aren't too taxing. Stay happy and healthy, and get paid.
When you review Tool music. Fans come out to play. You definitely bring a different approach to your reviews which is refreshing. Most people seem to miss the whole point of the music and lyrics along with Maynard's voice being a complete experience.
IN AN INTERVIEW MAYNARD SAID THIS SONG IS ABOUT A CHANCE MEETING HE HAD WITH L RON HUBBARD, THE FOUNDER OF SCIENTOLOGY, AND TRUST ME HE DID NOT LIKE HIM. SO FAR YOU HAVE LOVED EVERY TOOL SONG YOU HAVE DONE YOU ARE CLEARLY A MEMBER OF THE TOOL ARMY, PLEASE CHECK OUT TOOL (H) IT IS ABOUT HOW THE BIRTH OF HIS SON CHANGED HIS LIFE FOR THE BETTER, THIS SONG IS BEAUTIFUL.
i typically like to go in as blind as possible so that all interpretations are possible i never would have guessed H is about his son, luckily i've already recorded it and it will be out soon so it wasn't spoiled :) thanks for checking out the channel!
At this point I’m sure you are noticing a pattern in your viewership. 😂 If I were you, I’d just start at the beginning of the discography and work your way through. May I suggest mixing in A Perfect Circle as well?
I would highly recommend you react to the whole Aenima album (especially the title track) and then maybe some Radiohead, as the other comments have pointed out!
Maynard is not a fan of organized religion. His mom was a devout Christain who had a debilitating brain aneurysm when MJK was 11 and was confined to a wheel chair for about 10,000 days before she passed. The congregation turned their back on her.
richard W not Christianity. The church she was a part of was Christian Science. Although the term Christian is there, they are far, far from a Christian church
Now that you have bridged Maynard's view on religion, you should definitely do Judith by perfect circle (Maynard's other band) and then wings for Marie or 1 and 2. The thing you need to know going in is his mom was hugely devout and was paralyzed for about 10,000 days, hence the album name 10,000 days.
i typically like to know as little as possible about a song so that i can interpret for myself but i'll definitely be checking out wings for marie and 10000 days, thanks for the recommendations and for checking out the channel! :)
Whoa! You mentioned Radiohead! I'm such a fanboy, it's ridiculous! If and when you decide to take this band on, I definitely would love to help guide you through the chaos not that you need help. You either like them or you don't. Their sound has evolved more than most bands. Maybe start from the beginning and evolve naturally with their sound. I don't want to give anything away, but you can skip their first album "Pablo Honey" and jump right into their second "The Bends". The VIDEO "Just" might be a great start. I would be interested to see if you can solve the mystery at the very end! No rush. Radiohead is worth waiting until you are ready. You are good at looking deep into the lyrics and drawings parallels with the music. Fingers crossed.
I like to stick to the reaction because imo Tool is one of the top bands of our lifetime. But definitely react to more Radiohead. I’m a bit fuzzy on the names of the songs but OK Computer is a great way to start.

Probably one or two cool roadies and guitar techs thrown in there too. Don't forget the sound mixers on all the albums but their first two. The first two are mixed fine, just not as perfect as the rest.
If I’m not mistaken, Maynard does use a megaphone while singing this live.
Yep, saw them live at Soma in San Diego 1996. The megaphone was awesome.
Yes during the intro and verses. The “beep bop, beep bop” robot sound is Maynard on the megaphone
Also, the tinging sound is Adam Jones picking below the bridge
It's said this song was about L. Ron Hubbard (Scientology founder) or just religious icons in general. Depends on who you ask
It's both. Specifically about L Ron Hubbard (Captain and 512 references) but after he goes, there will always be the next cult leader ready to take his place.

Here's the link if you want to check it out: th-cam.com/video/BfLCHTRIxtk/w-d-xo.html
By the way, I love the way you dissect these songs!
Oh hell yeah! Give us some Radiohead! Fake Plastic Trees is my favorite 😍
Sting...if I ever lose my faith
I'm gonna suggest a different song on every video, I think. Aenima, the title track, is a song you should definitely check out. This whole album has a mood, and you seem to dig it. Hope the influx of viewers and videos aren't too taxing. Stay happy and healthy, and get paid.
definitely not getting paid lol but absolutely happy couldn't be happier with the response to the channel lately :)
Klone - Immersion
Hell yeah, Radiohead!!
He uses a megaphone in concert
An Eulogy for L Ron Hubbard, you were pretty spot on
Radiohead? Of course!!! The other truly great band of our time. Cheers!😉👍
I would watch some Radiohead on your channel. I too haven't really heard much from them besides the hits. So I'm subbing for that!
So many good Radiohead songs, but my favorite is Paranoid Android.
And if you do queensryche do operation mindcrime...only way to do it is front to back .its 80s pink floyd. The album tells a story
the only queensryche song i've ever heard is silent lucidity so may be able to do them in the future
This one is ALL about the founder of Scientology, L. Ron Hubbard.
Yes, indeed.
The “Fool” Martyr....
Just start with Bill Hicks "Arizona Bay" ...the rest is history..
MY FAVORITE SONG ABOUT JESUS!!!
You need to check out Judith from perfect circle
You're on point with them setting a tone, if you want to hear something they intend to be sincere and sad try out Wings for Marie 1 and 2
Oh and bring a tissue
jimmy is quite sad along that same theme too.
Isn't this song about L. Ron Hubbard?
Badlands devil stomp
Katatonia - The One You Are Looking Is Not Here
I've heard it said that this is about L. Ron Hubbard.
Scientology. They even played a show in their old church in LA I believe.
It's an open letter to every single internet troll out there scumming up the place
I like to stick to the reaction because imo Tool
is one of the top bands of our lifetime. But definitely react to more Radiohead. I’m a bit fuzzy on the names of the songs but OK Computer is a great way to start.
Wings for Marie/10 000 days part 1 and 2 from Tool please.
