The thing with tool is, you listen to them over and over because they're awesome. Then you want to know more and that's where discovery kicks in. Your not supposed to know what it's about on your first listen. But once you do know, their music is next level.
You should react to their live shows in the 90’s.. it’s something different no TH-camr has done and seeing Maynard performing in his prime is something to behold.
I can't agree with this more. I freaking love the EP and every single song on it. @Jersh do yourself and us a favor and give a few of those songs a whirl. Including the hard hitting lyrical and musical content of the title song, Opiate. But really any song is amazing. Warning, it is Raw and angry Tool, some people aren't as in love with it as I am (and of course the OGT's).
Jersh, Thank you from all of us who requested this song. Absolutely one of my many many favorite Tool songs. Henry Rollins' spoken word part is just great and if you are like me and do some digging you can find a video of them making this song in Sound City with Sylvia Massy. Rollin's actually sings the next verse along with Maynard as you can see in the Video, pretty awesome stuff. For those interested link below. th-cam.com/video/KTpYEL_PAzI/w-d-xo.html
I disagree. I don't think Judith is relevant to listening to the WFM duo, the only commonality is that his mother is the subject. WFM is a mourning song.
As I grew up I always wished Tools songs had more repetition of the catchy parts. Sometimes there’s some beautiful melodic thing that happens just once. But as I got older I grew to appreciate that, as a form of subtlety. It’s just like life in that sometimes for the best part, you need to be attentive of it and enjoy it while it lasts.
Tool is one of those bands that pays attention to the details, obviously. So, when you do get back to listening to their music post-reaction, i would recommend taking in a whole album in order, as you can imagine the songs were placed very specifically in order, and for the albums as a whole to invoke an atmosphere or mood, or tell a story in their own right.
One of the reasons your channel is becoming a quick favorite, I’ve requested this song, (and others you’ve reacted to,) on several other channels, along with several other commentators, and even though those channels reacted to a lot of Tool, almost nothing from the Undertow album gets a reaction-I think the lyrics on this album are a good as their more popular albums 🤷🏻♀️ This song was my introduction to Henry Rollins. I kind of feel like there is a sort of emotional arc across Undertow, Ænima, & Lateralus. Skipping Undertow is like ignoring some in recovery’s “rock bottom,” (I’m wondering what the book Doctor Sleep would be like w/ out that part.)
Maynard has said that the songs written that pertained to addiction are from his observations of friends, as he's never had to deal with that himself. In fact The Perfect Circle song, 13 Steps was written with Layne Staley ( the original lead singer for Alice in Chains who lost his fight against heroin addiction) in mind. You have to understand there was a lot of that going on, on the west coast at that time. Kurt Cobain is another, and then you had Chris Cornell and Chester who also dealt with addiction and depression who passed later. All these people were contemporary musicians who basically came from that time, late 80s to the early 90s, and most were friends of his and the band. Keep it up and thank you again for sharing your insight.❤✌🤘🤘
@@MostlyCloudy , that may be true. As I said he drew from observations. But I heard him comment 13 Steps was a direct result of him not being able to do anything for Layne, and not knowing what to say to him, about the path he needed to divert from.
I think you're spot on. I think great artists/lyricists have a way to personalize the song or tell a specific story while also allowing the listener to personalize it as well. I think Tool is great at that and as you've mentioned a few times before, the passion in Maynard's voice and the instrumentation also help highlight or intensify the various emotions throughout the song. Another great vid. Cheers!
Whats awesome is now that your finishing up your journey on these albums, you're literally coming up on some of their best songs. Flood, Rosetta Stoned, Wings for marie/10,000 days, Parabola, the Patient, Third eye. BAM! Def do those before moving on to F E A R I N O C U L U M.
Yeah this is probably one of my favs on this album......you should do the live version.....see how much of himself he put into this song....like the music takes over his body!Really cool!I will send you a link to the live video I always enjoyed
That is the really the first song that I feel the band let it eat. Maynard screams crazy time signature changes between Danny and paul then Adam going full metal at the end.
Mistakes I've made against you... He's talking about when he says "I've gone to great lengths to expand my threshhold of pain... I'll use my mistakes against you" ie. That which hurt most, which brought the most pain, he's gonna use that.
As for lyrics and meaning...they're subjective.... "Tool is exactly what it sounds like: It's a big dick. It's a wrench. ... we are ... your tool; use us as a catalyst in your process of finding out whatever it is you need to find out, or whatever it is you're trying to achieve." - MJK
If you enjoy Maynard's voice and his screams I highly suggest checking out the TH-cam video Maynard James Keenan Best Screams. It's about 8 minutes of all live concert footage of his best screams.
Henry Rollins did the talking voice part of this song. Also you should listen to some Clutch. They are a great band with a unique sound. I would recommend Electric Worry - Clutch to start with.
Speaking of the greatest screams in music....Maynard probably owns the Top 10.👍 And your thoughts on lyric interpretation - couldn’t agree more. Maynard is intentionally vague in (most of) his lyrics. Cheers and stay safe!👍🥃
The 'last requests'...please tell me you'll still be completing the albums Lateralus and 10,000 days. I may have misunderstood, but I worry since your reactions bring much joy, especially today. I feel like I could see the gears going in your head while listening, deciphering, and enjoying this song. You rock!
Fear Innoculum would be best reacted to song by song in album order. I'd be interested in what you think. The songs are really long and fairly complex but feel really cohesive. Maynard is fairly laid back in it and you can tell how much they've matured over the years. I think it is a masterpiece and a fantastic swan song for the band
@@dan.j.boydzkreationz It could be that too, mate. It sounds both very similar, but it's certainly not "...are the fuel that set...". That's why I hate when bands do not provide their lyrics.
Time to delve into the mutli song suites that I suspect you've been avoiding. Parabol/Parabola and Wings for Marie 1 & 2. They're possibly the two greatest moments in the Tool catalogue, although there are a lot of contenders.
I literally just said aloud "yeah, it's not always autobiographical" and those were literally the next words out of your mouth. lmao! So right. I feel like a lot of people assume that. Makes sense, cuz a lot of music is self-centered. Thankfully, Tool is not most music.
Many Tool songs, and songs from Maynard's other bands, are based on real life experiences that he's had. But you're right that it's not a universal thing. Alot of them are about just discussing some aspects of human nature, or shortcomings of people in general, and discussing how to surpass them. Also, you still haven't done "Parabol / Parabola", and that is a big time mistake if you never give it a listen. Even if you don't want to react to it, listen to them on your own time. I cannot state this strongly enough.
I'd agree with some other comments here about Wings for Marie 1&2. You don't need to do a reaction to it, but I'd recommend you listen to Judith, by A Perfect Circle. That is Maynard's 2nd band (of 3) and he wrote the song shortly after his mother's passing. I think that you can see him maturing and his perspective changing between 2000 and 2006, which I find really neat.
Jersh, In this craziness that has gripped the world...I hope you and your family are keeping positive. I appreciate your time and you’re reviews. Now that you've gotten a taste of Henry Rollins, you should listen to some of his Black Flag or Rollins Band stuff. He has collaborated with everyone from Les Claypool to William Shatner. Try something like "Liar" or "Can You Speak This?".
If you're looking for an older progressive band check out Pink Floyd - Animals. Cold and Ugly is another one I love so much. People try and play off Opiate like it's not as deep as the other albums but that's fucking nonsense.
