  • CrossFit Games Champion Laura Horvath asked Dave "What's the best way to hold the jump rope handle?", and he answered. Thoroughly. Those who are elite at jumping rope are able to control their breathing, go unbroken, and keep their arms/shoulders relaxed! Dave goes over the different ways to grip the jump rope handle and it really comes down to preference whether you hold near the top or lower in the middle. Just avoid holding it too low and think that it's "giving you extra clearance" when it is actually shortening your cable radius, hence leading to "donkey" or "dolphin" kicking. And your grip is most critical when it comes to using heavy ropes!! Having a relaxed but precise grip will allow you to keep tension on the rope with engaged wrists, as opposed to being stiff and trying to "just muscle it" which leads to shoulder and arm fatigue quickly. We see some people utilizing the "row boat" grip for heavy ropes, which may help if you have a wrist mobility issue or just think that it feels easier. Maybe even a placebo effect? If you can jump with the traditional grip that is what we recommend to maintain peak efficiency and fatigue your arms/shoulders MUCH less!
