With roughly equal-sized engines, a backyard engineered SC anything will always have a hard time against an even larger & heavier vehicle with a twin-turbo engine with years of factory R&D behind it. Props to the GMC guy, he tried. But the deck was stacked against him from the start in this contest, and equal props the the Blue Oval guys for doing their homework. Great video of two nice vehicles. Thanks TFL Truck!
James No it don't. You make more boost as the RPM goes up, but you *CANT* "spool" a supercharger that's run off a belt and or gear.... Com on now, look it up before you people post.
Dumb as fuk, wow. What a slow ass Chevy my God. "I just spent $8,000 on a supercharger and my truck still won't out run and stock Ford V6." I'm just speechless
We had a protech charger on a vortec 454 and I can tell you that you don't really feel it until about 3000 rpm, which is what it looks like in the video. Its builds linear which I like but it doesn't have that low flat curve that a properly tuned modern turbo has. They may be putting down similar peak wheel power but the raptor has a lot more area under the curve and it shows.
So much hate against the Raptor, i think the haters just can't afford it. Its ok if you can't afford one, just keep your mouth shut and watch this cool video.
From my experience. Leave the damn thing stock. If you want something fast buy a fast car and save yourself from all the headache. This dude could have come close to buying a raptor after all the time and money spent on that canyon
Use Trollgun 01, if you think the Roush version is uncreative or cookie cutter, you don't know anything about the Roush model. Personally, I am not a fan of Roush because the price is incredibly High. Anyone who thinks I knew Raptor is extremely expensive has not looked at the Rouse. In its highest form, you will probably spend $90,000 for a Roush if you get a good deal. I saw one on a dealer lot about a month ago which stickered for $99,999. I couldn't help but to laugh. This year idiocy of the idea overwhelmed me. That said, Roush comes with a warranty and that is definitely not cookie-cutter in terms of 700hp vehicles, let alone pickups. There's also the fact that they put silly things insofar as looks on, which again are not cookie-cutter for pickup. I don't necessarily care for any of it, but it is there and it is not on just everything. Perhaps the biggest thing that isn't cookie cutter is the starting price of a Roush and as far as I can tell, that is somewhere in the neighborhood of $10,000 over standard and only includes aesthetics. I would never spend $10,000 additional for any vehicle based on non working looks pleasing(to some) items. When you get to the top end model though, you might wonder how things don't come unglued because they do have serious performance capabilities. Roush upgrades Wheels and Tires and Brakes and of course, the engine. If one keeps his or her foot out of the throttle, if you will kindly other routes is probably almost exact to the Raptor. Odds of that being the case are probably close to zero, but so what. Lol if you put the two side by side for an acceleration contest, there is no question the routes would walk away from the Raptor. I don't think there's a dealership sold and warrantied by the manufacturer pickup truck out there today that even comes close in terms of sheer power and acceleration. Still, I would not buy a Roush labeled vehicle unless I knew it was a very low number and had very low mileage on it and I certainly would not buy at sticker MSRP. I do prefer the 5-liter over the 3.5 TT V6. I probably prefer it over the 2.7 as well. It is quite powerful and smooth among pickups and moves the F-150 almost effortlessly. To me, in terms of the field, it has the smoothness of the 5.3 L with the motion of the 5.7 Hemi. It is not jerky and the power comes in in a way that I would describe as linear. I like the Raptor for everything it is, but I am one of the masses who, regardless what Ford says, would consider sticker price if they had simply used a single or a twin turbocharged 5L instead. I can hardly imagine how much more capable the truck would really be. The 3.5 TT is actually a very good engine and we know it can be tuned to well over 600hp. By the same token, the five leader can we brought two over 1200hp
A Ford V6 engine that was built from the ground up to replace a V8, in a vehicle built for performance, versus a modified GM V6 engine originally meant for the V6 car/crossover market and adapted for mid-size trucks. There is a whole lot more work needed on the canyon to get it up to a raptor-fighter level. But does it really need to be? I bet that Canyon is a blast to drive as is.
John Wyskochil and napster6 and Boo Ya, add a twin turbo kit to a v6 and OF COURSE it will beat a v8. Now, put twin turbos on a v8 vs. a twin turbo v6 see what happens. Also, if FCA decided to make the Ram 1500 TRX, most Ford guys wouldn't be confident in ONE truck.
clovehitch Your going on about other trucks beating it if they had a turbo or if the trx was a option.. Maybe your twelve and don't know what you JUST WROTE.
In 2014 Chevrolet built a twin turbo 3.6 liter v6 for the Cadillac CTS that produced 420 hp. Whoa! Imagine if they dropped that thing in their mid-sized trucks.... The problem I hear over and over again is that the auto manufacturers limit hp in the midsize trucks as they compete with their full size (money shot) lineups. We receive trucks with what I consider barely adequate hp/torque numbers when perfectly good v8's are built by most all full size truck manufactures. I do not want a full size truck because they are too big but I do want Toyota's 5.7L V8 in my Tacoma. Everyone knows that larger displacement motor can run efficiently at low rpm pushing lighter vehicles around and look no further than Toyota's lineup and compare the 4 and 6 cylinders in fuel consumption and hp ratings. They are so close (within 1-2 mpg) that the 4 cyl makes little sense for most applications. For kicks I looked up the fuel ratings for the 2017 Corvette with a 6.2L V8 with 7 speed manual and no shock there as it has a combined rating of 19 mpg. 16 city and 25 hwy and puts out well over 400 hp. I need to stop complaining....
One more thing, the new 3.5L Tacoma motor can not be supercharged or turbo'd at this time because of it's Atkinson cycle" design. Tacoma owners are stuck with existing hp/torque outputs for their trucks unless someone comes up with a solution. If I had an extra 10k sitting around, I'd do a 5.7L I-force swap but I have other wants beyond more hp. The manual transmission in the Tacoma, in my opinion, makes up for some of the motors short comings as my truck tows like a champ.
"Sounds to me like you need a half ton" That Canyon is literally almost identical size as the Raptor. Might as well call them full sizes, the old ones were the perfect mid size though.
Mind you the supercharger is set at low boost which is 6psi compare 15psi turbo. Once he bumps that up to 10psi the supercharged GMA will win. Also you don't need to spool a supercharger. Rootblower comes on at low rpm. Announcer guy made a mistake. It's the turbo that needs spooling.
Viren vs, yet they perform better in general by long shot. I suppose the little bitty not so pretty, it's much better fuel economy. In any performance category though, just wave bye-bye to the two pickup trucks because even though they weigh somewhere between 1500 and 3000 lb more, they usually outrun her car. Or did she get a Civic Type-R? LOL
clovehitch, I'm not sure that you have a clue what you're talking about, but just because two pickup trucks cannot run a Honda Civic doesn't mean that all pickup trucks should be electric. That doesn't even remotely begin to make sense. By my logic, I was mocking the fact that he was putting those two vehicles at the bottom of the ladder in order to compare them with a Honda Civic. Clearly that went entirely over your head.
This is my dads truck. The reason I believe this lost the race is due to the fact that we had the aggressive torque management left in the transmission programming to alleviate some stress on the stock transmission. It is a very fun ride but likes to fall on its face at launches and immediately after shifting due to this. I have no doubt if this was a 1/4 mile race that the canyon would have won, it was reeling in the ford quickly at the end of this short track. The truck is currently listed so I he can move up to a half ton but his wife is not very happy about that. The reason it was supercharged and not a 1/2 ton already is the fact that it is paid off and his wife didn’t want him paying taxes and registering a new vehicle, yet somehow he snuck a supercharger past her. He began with the canyon over a 1/2 ton due to length issues with his previous garage setup and the fact that the only reason he wanted a truck was to have a small bed to more easily transport household items and not to tow. Now that we tow the camper a lot he is jealous of my Tundra and he believes that will be the next truck. denver.craigslist.org/cto/d/2015-gmc-canyon-supercharged/6347383276.html
Sounds like he needs to work on his relationship with the wife vs going around her back... now he has a pos gmc with a 5k super charger no one will buy. Instead of just buying a real truck to start with. Or just grow a pair
clovehitch screw u. It's an open forum and the guy used tfl to try and sell his shit! Then his son comes on here and freely gives out his dad's dirty laundry. Don't like the response don't post in public!
David Cox I have a 5.7 crewmax tundra and agree with that choice👍🏼👍🏼. Also have a supercharged FJ cruiser with 400hp to the wheels. I completely agree about the intrusive torque management holding it back. The newer tundras also have this more intrusive torque management after 2014, unlike the earlier 07-13 tundras which are much faster to especially in higher gears. Another thing to remember is that Raptor launches in all wheel drive...
Andy Hass You must not be much of a car guy. Modifying stuff that you have to do better than it originally did is a hobby. The canyon tows very respectably and in a drag race with a trailer hooked up would win vs my 15 tundra. The issue is in Wyoming wind and Colorado mountain roads, a bigger truck would be more comfortable. I don’t think I would consider what I said dirty laundry and certainly wouldn’t insinuate his marriage is in jeopardy. Sometimes women have silly rules and men have to do what it takes to keep them happy and in this case it’s been not trading in his truck.
Hello guys! So being a very satisfied owner of a 2016 Colorado Z71,4x4, V6, Ext Cab, that is totally stock, that I use to tow a 4,000 gross weight travel trailer with all up and down the east coast and as far west as The Smokey Mountains of Gatlinburg Pigeon Forge areas with ease and comfort, with just enough room for the wife and I and two small Cocker Spaniel dogs. On one trip to Key West, we brought our Sportster with up in the bed! On that trip we rolled over a Cat Scale at 9,540 lbs CGVW! While still riding and handling fine, with plenty of power and brakes, while getting decent mileage at an average on that 4,000 mile trip of 14 mpg! I have been interested in a supercharger! I like the kind that fits in place of the intake manifold though, I believe that will add more rwhp than the type the guy in the video has. But they are a lot more expensive and work! But that would make the truck just amazing! But hey MATT that was an amazing job you and your son has done together, that is the most important part! If you do get a half ton, I’d suggest you get a 6.2 in a nice new GMC AllTerrain!
This is why I get upset when people say the new Raptor is for sissies, JUST because it hasn't got a V8. Are you insane? It has TWO TURBOS! It's a bloody quick truck!
dpajc056 Wow, who gives a shit? Turbos are the most boring thing to drive and sound like a blow dryer and only expose the true nature of an engine's shortcomings. Give me a NA 6.2, all aluminum construction, 4 valve, DOHC, VVT, and direct injection and this thing would be an absolute animal. You don't buy a baja truck for fuel economy.
I think I see a Raptor in Matt's future unless he is like I used to be, and would drive nothing but a bowtie. I don't see money being an issue for him so I think we need a follow up with him in 6 months or so. Only obstacle I can tell is getting the wife on board. Whatcha think there Mr. Rowland?
Charles Warren I agree. He says the wife wants it stock. Then she'll love the Ford. Probably the regular F150 though. It'll do more work and is faster than the Raptor
Supercharger do not "spool up"....the two trucks are NOT similar. USe the same truck and then compare the same truck with turbos and then the same truck with a SC. Super Charger will always win in quick acceleration tests and instant throttle response.
The driver didn't know how to drive it. With the canyon weighing 1,000lbs less and having basically the same HP as the Raptor the Canyon should have one. He need to load up the TQ converter and manually shift the auto so it would get into the boost.
EveryThingAutomotive ETA oh then what’s the point? Kind of ruins the point of it being a supercharger doesn’t it? I thought the whole thing about superchargers was always being in boost
Raced one of these fords the other day. He was almost as fast as my v8 Lexus until we hit about 120mph. Then I blew his doors off. I was amazed though, these trucks haul ass! The driver gave me a thumbs up and i did the same to him. These newer Fords are wound up tight for sure!
I've been watching your channel for a long time, should have paid you this compliment a long time ago. Better late than never,. Great channel, best truck channel on TH-cam! ;)
Toyota got it right, my fathers 2015 tundra rips and tows a boat over the weight capacity without hot temps. And doesn't void the warranty because it was a trd part. Wish they still were an option because he would buy another as his is well past 100k.
Brett Pef, any pickups Kento Beyond its tow rating. The problem is you have to be able to stop the load. The tow rating is only going to be as good as the brakes. Not to knock the Toyota, but it's fuel economy is bottom-of-the-barrel at best. It also doesn't have the best power or torque or tow capacity or haul capacity. That 5.7 could definitely use some improvement. I think it's the oldest engine in my entire lineup of the 5 major manufacturers. They got it right about 10 years ago and the problem is, they've failed to improve it one scrap ever since.
Steve elco that was surely a part of it, but so was the fact that the Ecoboost is literally running double the boost that the Colorado has. No comparison there. Plus the fact that modern turbocharged engines are at a huge advantage over any belt driven compressor.
Steve elco Your nuts, this race was lost in the make of the trucks, Ford had way more horsepower and torque the GMC was beat before the green light, as most cases when the Chevy boys go up against the Ford men
I love supercharging just about anything but this isn’t something I’d done.. Belt driven centrifugal superchargers are not very efficient for tow vehicles, they are noisey and do not add the power of a turbo system or torque of a roots style blower and this guy is towing so you’d think he would want torque ..The 3.6 is quick engine for its size, but it is a problem plaged engine with a history of timing chain problems that cost the owners a small fortune to repair in order to put the check engine light out so they can pass inspection.... it’s pretty sad when a bone stock raptor with a smaller engine on 35s and weighing a lot more can wax this thing in any legal speed limit acceleration contest . And the icing on the cake ? You just voided the power train warranty on your brand new canyon ! And it still can’t stick with a stock ecoboost . If the raptor beat that means any ecoboost will since the Raptor is the slowest ecoboost made even though it has the most power ,the regular 3.5 and 2.7 will beat it by even more in a race.
Mallett Cars is in the final stages (tuning) of releasing a roots-style supercharger for the ZR2. It'll provide tons of low-end torque, right where a truck usually needs it. The centrifugal supercharger on this guy's GMC provides little boost at all on the low-end, and ramps up to higher peak values.
TheDude1024 that is good news. This truck should of had more balls from the factory. GM cutting back on new ICE development doesn’t bode well for any future factory engine offerings. Hopefully aftermarket comes through.
If it makes you feel any better, my old 2005 Colorado with the inline 5-cylinder engine made only 220hp. The 308hp of this V6 is almost 1.5 times that. It's definitely an improvement! I'm sure GM doesn't want this mid-size to be 'too appealing' because it could cannibalize sales on the full-size trucks, not to mention CAFE standards and so on.
Couldn't help but notice this comment - thanks Joe for the kind words. As an update, the ZR2 kit is ready to roll, Smarticus. www.mallettcars.com/mallett-supercharger-system/
Centrifugal superchargers are half ass turbos. It is basically a compressor housing with a pulley in place of the turbine section. The higher the engine revs the faster the pulley spins the compressor wheel. Cheap to make, easy to install, and inefficient. Roots/positive displacement superchargers are an order of magnitude better. Plus you can hear the compressor surge on that centrifugal.
100% Ford guy here. But I commend the GMC dude for making a pretty good little truck. But if he buys a half tonne and promises his wife to keep it stock? He better be promising her a Ford
J Bouchard If he is able to get a half ton he has narrowed it down to a Tundra. I doubt he will keep it stock. We are kind of addicts when it comes to modifying vehicles we shouldn’t, Magnuson makes it too easy.
David Cox Toyota is a pretty good truck. Thankfully they fixed their frame problems. Here in Canada. I have first hand knowledge as I use to deliver full truck frames to the local dealership because the drivetrain on the tundras had lots of life left. But the frames were shot. One frame a week on average.
I can agree with this sentiment, though i'm not a turbo'd v6 fan and never will be, stock performance of any GM pickup is pretty underwhelming. They need tunes, bolt ons, and truthfully gear/tranny upgrades if you're willing.
I've heard several people say that the stock v6 was terrible with any type of trailer. Then again others swear by it. My old F150 has 355 ft.lbs. and it struggles with light trailers. I'm not sure why companies keep putting engines with high rpm torque bands into production.
clovehitch I don't think the gmc had a roots style! It had a centrifugal aka a belt driven turbo charger. So it should have no lag and similar boost. I think it's a shirty install and tuning if he got spanked that bad!
RAM TRUCKS aren't you tired of running around talking trash? You're all over this thing was nothing but negative responses and they barely rate on the common sense chart. You've made your point, you don't know enough to like Ford's. Since these trucks are virtually the same in all necessary categories, you should wise up a little bit and hold off on the stupid comments. All you're doing is making yourself look bad.
That was ALL driver.. They should have had the host switch and drive the canyon....would have ran much better. It made about 120hp more than stock. The canyon is about $20k cheaper than a similar trim 1/2 ton...so a $5k supercharger kit isn't that bad..even though I'd go turboed.
Cloverhitch.....A Stock canyon like this is only 1 sec/and 3mph slower than the Raptor in the 1/4 mile, from magazine tests. This lose was all on the owner/driver.
So the Canyon is 425 HP to the crank, and FAR less torque. Even with it's huge weight advantage it couldn't hang. That was a pretty interesting matchup. Looks like torque does matter coming off the line.
1Fast GXP, I think you're onto something here. Cupquakes Aunt hit me when I read this, 370rwhp from that 3.6L, which started life at about 300fwhp is a massive jump. It's like this thing is making another 150fwhp and I'd bet it isn't. For all we know, the Raptor might show 430rwhp on the same dyno.
He could only make it a closer race. It'll never beat the Raptor because of what it is. He wants a reliable truck that can tow. If he wants an all out race truck? Then he'll lose the reliability but may beat the Raptor
clovehitch, the amount of boost really means nothing. That is a relative term to show pressure. One could be putting out one pound of boost while the other puts out 10 lb and they could run the exact same power.
Supercharger is belt driven, and a Centrifugal supercharger (like this one) makes very little low end boost (2psi@ 2,000rpm, 4psi @3,000rpms....with probably 8psi @ 6,000rpms). ..or something like that dpending on the pulley size. A Whipple, Kenne-bell or TVS eaton is belt driven but max boost is basically right of idle, In by 1,000
BlackGT1999, maybe he was referring to the 3 valve V8 in the Aviator. Something tells me there were a couple years the Mach 1 got that style engine even though 4 valve is indeed stuck in my brain. Perhaps it's just because of the identical 305 HP rating. Maybe he did an engine swap. I'm not sure what the case is, but I think there's going to be a correlation in there.
My Lincoln Mark VIII had that same engine; all aluminum DOHC 32V 4.6L V8. Good engine. 280hp back in 1993 was pretty sweet. Hell, the Mustang Cobra only had 235hp then. The Mach 1, Aviator, Marauder had 305hp. Great starting point, and huge gains with forced induction due to all those valves.
Tractionless, the Aviator got the 3V, but even that was rated @ 305. Like all N/A 4.6's tho, it lacked great tq. The Mk VIII was likely underrated and made 305 itself. At least in the Cobra they could see their rpm genius. The 93 Cobra(5L) was lower on power, but broke 300 lb-ft tq and was lightweight.
Cam Guy, I'm disappointed in the canyon as well, but I doubt anyone makes a screw type supercharger for it. What he should have done to make the most power, which is what he said he wanted, is used turbos himself.
Casper Ghost Nonsense. This Canyon was reeling in the Raptor. I'm not GM fan but I like to stick to facts. Only disadvantage Canoyn had was the hole shot and that wasn't helped by the Centrifugal blower on board. All the Canyon needs is a stall. Most people who utilize Centrifugal blowers and have autos know this..some don't.
Could have bought a turbo diesel 4cyl.... got a v6cylinder & supercharged it & might be faster than a stock diesel but how much did you pay? You could have chipped n upgraded the diesel n got way more
SOLAR SS I doubt it. We truck probably only got into second gear and most as it is and it would have gone through at least another complete gear change with an 8-speed. Changing gears is wasting time. For whatever reason, that power and torque simply doesn't get laid down to the ground soon enough. At least, not soon enough to outrun the F-150 Raptor.
That Canyon probably weigh's 700lbs+ less than that Raptor. Just because the new Raptors are made of aluminum doesn't mean they are light. They are only about 400lbs lighter than the 2010 - 2014 Steel bodied Raptors.
He also said he bought the supercharger for gas mileage... under no circumstance will it improve fuel economy. People don't realize that supercharger/turbos are band aids for small engines to be fast but also be fuel efficient. It doesn't make them fuel efficient.
Mopar Magic, While i generally agree with you in his case it might actually be different. He is doing a fair bit of towing at high altitude. That naturally aspirated V6 would be struggling and working frequently well outside it's optimum BSFC curve. Adding a supercharger will help a lot with the altitude and might make the truck operate in a more optimal BSFC zone.
clovehitch yea I'ma slap a supercharger on that Fiesta and tow 3 tons in the mountains while popping wheelies going by that raptor outclassing all the way yo
Doesn't sound like the Canyon setup was done completely. Looked like stock exhaust. More air in means you have to get that air out. I'm thinking about doing the same supercharger on mine
No disrespect to the Guest (Matt), but the only thing he got out of this upgrade was some quality time with his son! For the same money he could have got an F-150 with either the 2.7L or (lower trim) 3.5L; or (if he likes GM) a Silverado 6.2, and got a faster truck, while keeping his warranty intact! It's all good though... do what makes you happy!
The six spd and a maybe the blower result could be why the canyon lags behind. Raptor has 5 valves/cylinder, main+secondary stage turbos, 10 spd auto and Sport mode. And that's not the ceiling of performance.
Although this GMC Canyon is faster than a stock GMC Canyon by a long way (it’s probably as fast as Roman’s gen 1 Raptor), the excess heat cooking that engine could shorten this truck’s life by quite a bit. In addition, an air intake in the engine bay might be a problem if Matt takes the truck off road. The videos produced by RIPP show the same air intake placement so Matt is following the company’s guidance.
not to mention that blower robs HP from the crank. 10lbs of boost on a supercharger, is like 6, maybe 7 lbs on turbos since turbos aren't run off the belt.
J Bouchard You're damn right. The 15+ Ford's are amazing. Last weekend I bought my mom an ecoboost black on black escape, and for myself a black v6 17" mustang. There is no competition. Ford has every class of vehicle covered. Chevy and dodge need to seriously change their game plan if they don't plan on being crushed by Ford.
Still say they should’ve wedge in a ats-v twin turbo v6 in the canyon
I’m tryna put one in my Colorado 😂😂
5:50 Your Welcome.
My what??
“After that super charger spooled up” 🤦🏼♂️
Its centrifugal. It does have a spool
@@generalgreivus yes he knows, hence his comment.
Its a pro charger it spools
With roughly equal-sized engines, a backyard engineered SC anything will always have a hard time against an even larger & heavier vehicle with a twin-turbo engine with years of factory R&D behind it. Props to the GMC guy, he tried. But the deck was stacked against him from the start in this contest, and equal props the the Blue Oval guys for doing their homework. Great video of two nice vehicles. Thanks TFL Truck!
Supercharger spooled up hehe
Yeah, I heard that, poor choice of words
eterlizzi indeed. Very poor choice of words. Equivalent of saying "you got your motor revved up on that bicycle you're riding"
Dobbies Revenge didn’t know that, I’ll have to check it out
No, spooled up sheshe
there are supers that mount like a turbo and do spool up.
Surprising outcome, Thank you TFL for all these truck drag race videos.
btw a supercharger has no spool time, only a turbo needs spool time.
What he was talking about is the need for a higher stall converter.
yea takes less time to spool the turbo up but still takes a little time to build boost. not really fair to do it 1 truck and not the other.
Disagree, a Roots or Centrifugal system is "fixed" via belt to the engine, it's based off engine RPM.
The Chevy needed a higher stall converter.
ramairgto72 yes, when he said that I was like uhhhhh okkayyyyyy lol
A centrifugal does. It makes higher boost the higher the RPM
James
No it don't.
You make more boost as the RPM goes up, but you *CANT* "spool" a supercharger that's run off a belt and or gear.... Com on now, look it up before you people post.
Very impressive performance from the Raptor.
llamawizard I thought the canyon was more impressive. Little programmer it it'll smoke that raptor. Not to mention price
The Canyon has more engine displacement (3.6 versus 3.5), less weight, and still managed to lose. How is that impressive?
clovehitch
Impressive right?
Raptor is a #FakeTruck lol
llamawizard You mispelled "Canyon".
“Once you got that supercharger spooled up”
Dumb as fuk, wow.
What a slow ass Chevy my God.
"I just spent $8,000 on a supercharger and my truck still won't out run and stock Ford V6."
I'm just speechless
Yeah they’re not too mechanically inclined if ya haven’t noticed haha
We had a protech charger on a vortec 454 and I can tell you that you don't really feel it until about 3000 rpm, which is what it looks like in the video. Its builds linear which I like but it doesn't have that low flat curve that a properly tuned modern turbo has. They may be putting down similar peak wheel power but the raptor has a lot more area under the curve and it shows.
So much hate against the Raptor, i think the haters just can't afford it. Its ok if you can't afford one, just keep your mouth shut and watch this cool video.
I have one but cant afford it :(
The Dyno numbers for the GMC seem high for the results. Should have been much closer considering weight and size differences.
From my experience. Leave the damn thing stock. If you want something fast buy a fast car and save yourself from all the headache. This dude could have come close to buying a raptor after all the time and money spent on that canyon
Jade bylund I really don't understand the point in drag racing trucks...
Jade bylund or a half ton since he says he wanted more power to tow lol
So does he have the eight speed automatic or the six speed automatic?
For the money still would rather have a 5.0 F150 and add the Roush package over those 2 beehive sounding trucks.
Juiceboxx TM
And get poor fuel mileage, as well as being Mr. Uncreative Cookie Cutter?
Juiceboxx TM as impressive as the 5.0 is, it wouldn’t hold a candle to the raptor. The raptor is a better all around truck hands down
But I guess you will have to stick with your 75 grimmlin
29kalel It still wouldn't outlast the engines in the 92-96 Ford Trucks.
I'll stick to my big, slow and heavy v8.
John Wyskochil Exactly, I didn't buy a truck for quarter mile times
Excuses.. if Chevy won we don't see you you people bitching like this.
John Wyskochil and napster6 and Boo Ya, add a twin turbo kit to a v6 and OF COURSE it will beat a v8. Now, put twin turbos on a v8 vs. a twin turbo v6 see what happens. Also, if FCA decided to make the Ram 1500 TRX, most Ford guys wouldn't be confident in ONE truck.
clovehitch
Your going on about other trucks beating it if they had a turbo or if the trx was a option..
Maybe your twelve and don't know what you JUST WROTE.
Napster6 I think your dad needs to come in and tell you your hour on the computers up... 😂😂😂
Is it possible to fit in a supercharger on the truck like the ones they use on a hellcat or demon?
Taco Pro I don't know what the torque curve looks like on the Caddy. But I doubt it'll be suited for a truck.
GM has been having a hard time catching up to Ford. The GM turbo engines have been eating their turbos and pistons left and right.
What cars are doing that ?
GM has raced a twin turbo v6 caddy for long time as well
Did you have the trifecta tune with that supercharger ?
Being fast is cool and all but I’m more than okay with my big, slow ass 6.0 V8
Daniel Rocha-Garcia Same with my 96 Ford F150 with a 5.0L (302) Windsor V8 as well as my 2011 Ford F150 with a 5.0L (302) Coyote V8.
Daniel Rocha-Garcia x2 man
Did the canyon have cold air intake, a decent exhaust, and a tune?
If the GMC had a non-generic supercharger he'd destroy. I think those ripp superchargers are pretty low end. Correct me if I'm wrong.
They're are actually Vortech 3 Superchargers. The set up is by RIPP.
if he had 4.10 rear end like the ford instead of the 3.42 he probly would of won.
It's the turbo that needs spooling.
that is a centrifugal supercharger … it still needs rpm to spool. You are correct about a roots style not needing spool time
I can dig the build, but would question why not just buy the half ton?
Love when roman does Ford reviews. Deep down I know Roman is a die hard Ford fan! FORD RULES
Ford fix or repair daily
Ford are garbage.
Thanks guys!
That Canyon sounds absolutely horrible. Anyone who says otherwise must really like old Civics.
JJ J your mom sounds horrible pig squealin 🐖
That’s true haha but really the raptor sounds no better. A v6 is a v6. Sure they have some power now but they still sound like shit.
What is the best realability and durability truck ???
“I promissed the wife I would keep it original” classic.
Great video. But not surprised. The Raptor is crazy quick
Look at those big manly trucks that sound like my aunt's civic
Viren vs, yet they perform better in general by long shot. I suppose the little bitty not so pretty, it's much better fuel economy. In any performance category though, just wave bye-bye to the two pickup trucks because even though they weigh somewhere between 1500 and 3000 lb more, they usually outrun her car. Or did she get a Civic Type-R? LOL
I love my 5.0 F150. But times are a changing. Soon that'll be dropped and a V6TT will be all you can buy
More like an Accord.
J Bouchard
Wise man. Your 5.0 will last a lot longer than that tt v6
clovehitch, I'm not sure that you have a clue what you're talking about, but just because two pickup trucks cannot run a Honda Civic doesn't mean that all pickup trucks should be electric. That doesn't even remotely begin to make sense. By my logic, I was mocking the fact that he was putting those two vehicles at the bottom of the ladder in order to compare them with a Honda Civic. Clearly that went entirely over your head.
Always cool videos with FLT
I'd like to see the supercharged Canyon vs a 2nd gen supercharged Tacoma
NOLAItsNotOva the Tacoma would have killed it
Please explain el the difference between a pure diesel truck and a regular diesel truck. Thank you.
Andy Hass
You must not be much of a car guy.
Sometimes women have silly rules and men have to do what it takes to keep them happy and in this case it’s been not trading in his truck.
clovehitch so are U! What is the point of your responses!! U going for sjw of the year? I own u three trucks. I bet u own a prius
A raptor airplane would be more aerodynamic too
dpajc056 Wow, who gives a shit? Turbos are the most boring thing to drive and sound like a blow dryer and only expose the true nature of an engine's shortcomings. Give me a NA 6.2, all aluminum construction, 4 valve, DOHC, VVT, and direct injection and this thing would be an absolute animal. You don't buy a baja truck for fuel economy.
Boo Ya So Baja frowns upon more power and less fueling stops? 🤔
OCCdays Baja uses 800 horsepower V8s so your comment is not only invalid, the notion is beyond reason.
dpajc056 it's a sissy truck
Wanted to know the tire size your running with that truck and SC, also does the tire affect the mpg with the SC? Great truck looks good.
I love that build it's sweet run him again at a quarter mile I'm very curious what he would run and if he could make up space on that raptor
The driver didn't know how to drive it. With the canyon weighing 1,000lbs less and having basically the same HP as the Raptor the Canyon should have one.
He need to load up the TQ converter and manually shift the auto so it would get into the boost.
JerseyMikeP no it’s supercharged right? So there is no “getting into boost” I believe. As for the torque converter thing you’re probably right
Joseph Samsor it's a centrifuge type so it's basically a belt driven turbo. Power is in the top end.
EveryThingAutomotive ETA oh then what’s the point? Kind of ruins the point of it being a supercharger doesn’t it? I thought the whole thing about superchargers was always being in boost
Joseph Samsor ease of installation I believe. Turbo set ups are mire complicated. The roots style and twin screw type and always in boost.
More drag races please! Good morning TFL Truck.
If the canyon had this... if the canyon had that... quit crying. It lost! Raptor #1
np432 seems like if it were a 1/4 mile race the canyon would've caught up
The idiot super charged it when he should have put a turbo on it
I know right? These v6 tt haters are like trump haters they hate and don't even know why...
If the Canyon won, it wouldn’t have lost. I dare you find an argument against that.
You really think Trump haters don't know why? Just read and maybe....just maybe you will get it.
Beast beast BEAST!!! My money was on the Canyon btw
I always root for the underdog
Pay up
Figuratively speaking of course
Pickup Truck4U (:
ALL THINGS PROMOTIONS give me your money YOU LOST!!
I've been watching your channel for a long time, should have paid you this compliment a long time ago. Better late than never,. Great channel, best truck channel on TH-cam! ;)
From the immortal words of Nelson, HAHA!
Dale, your Canyon sucks! 🔥🚗🔥🚿🚒🚨 🤔🙄😢😂😜
That canyon looks so cool with the new wheels and no air dam
Raptor FTW
0:20 that into gives me goosebumps every time man
Toyota got it right, my fathers 2015 tundra rips and tows a boat over the weight capacity without hot temps.
They got it right about 10 years ago and the problem is, they've failed to improve it one scrap ever since.
cheatrslix1 great point no idea why toyota is behind everyone el se but it does get 23 mpg everyday on premium
Brett Pef, 23mpg?? I think that is literally 5 MPG over the EPA highway rating.
cheatrslix1 yep
Toyota ?? WTF!! Toy right, tell your dad when he grows up to buy himself a Ford !!!
What i wnt to know is what truck is worth investing in now just for a weekdnd offroad truck
A used jeep.
Pretty sure this race was lost in the transmission 😕
Steve elco that was surely a part of it, but so was the fact that the Ecoboost is literally running double the boost that the Colorado has. No comparison there. Plus the fact that modern turbocharged engines are at a huge advantage over any belt driven compressor.
Steve elco
Your nuts, this race was lost in the make of the trucks, Ford had way more horsepower and torque the GMC was beat before the green light, as most cases when the Chevy boys go up against the Ford men
KRSM Field Mile true lol
bullshit. i have a ranger. they are slower than an s-10
Engineering > Brute force.
hi. at 0:38 is this a air horn or electric horn !??? Love it !!!!!!!!!!
That guy was cool
How long of a run was this?
It is less than 1/8 mile.
I love supercharging just about anything but this
isn’t something I’d done.. Belt driven centrifugal superchargers are not
very efficient for tow vehicles, they are noisey and do not add the power of a turbo system or torque of a roots style blower and this guy is towing so you’d think he would want torque ..The 3.6 is quick engine for its size, but it is a problem plaged engine with a history of timing chain problems that cost the owners a small fortune to repair in order to put the check engine light out so they can pass inspection.... it’s pretty sad when a bone stock raptor with a smaller engine on 35s and weighing a lot more can wax this thing in any legal speed limit acceleration contest . And the icing on the cake ? You just voided the power train warranty on your brand new canyon ! And it still can’t stick with a stock ecoboost . If the raptor beat that means any ecoboost will since the Raptor is the slowest ecoboost made even though it has the most power ,the regular 3.5 and 2.7 will beat it by even more in a race.
what size of tires are ko2s
The ZR2 needs that supercharger.
J Bouchard
If he is able to get a half ton he has narrowed it down to a Tundra.
J Bouchard is the GMC a full size or mid size
GeeStang mid size. Ford is a full size. And I'm sure most people know what I meant when I said half tonne
Something is up... the canyon has roughly an 800 lb weight advantage and is putting down 370 to the wheels and got smoked that bad?
NWI The raptor has 450 hp. 80 more horsepower can make a noticeable difference.
Thunder 2017 the raptor's 450 is at the crank. They put down 360-370 at the wheels...
clovehitch I don't think the gmc had a roots style! It had a centrifugal aka a belt driven turbo charger. So it should have no lag and similar boost. I think it's a shirty install and tuning if he got spanked that bad!
Nothing is up. Chevy just sucks
NWI yeah he’s afraid to build boost at the line!
I’m eager to see the upcoming Raptor Shelby. I’m curious if they’r going to stick with the twin turbo 3.5L V6 or opt for turbocharging the 5.0L V8.
LD ODOM Didn't the Shelby Raptor already come out? They have the same 3.5 Liter EcoBoost, it's overpriced in my opinion.
Raptor is the Best
RAM TRUCKS but it's my dream no matter if it's expensive
RAM TRUCKS
*Boi is not expensive when your a successful business person*
Pete 2So truth
clovehitch
That’s what a non working successful person would say
RAM TRUCKS aren't you tired of running around talking trash? You're all over this thing was nothing but negative responses and they barely rate on the common sense chart. You've made your point, you don't know enough to like Ford's. Since these trucks are virtually the same in all necessary categories, you should wise up a little bit and hold off on the stupid comments. All you're doing is making yourself look bad.
How about supercharging the diesel option?
what waste on that Canyon
So speed is what makes a truck superior???
That was ALL driver.. They should have had the host switch and drive the canyon....would have ran much better.
It made about 120hp more than stock. The canyon is about $20k cheaper than a similar trim 1/2 ton...so a $5k supercharger kit isn't that bad..even though I'd go turboed.
Cloverhitch.....A Stock canyon like this is only 1 sec/and 3mph slower than the Raptor in the 1/4 mile, from magazine tests. This lose was all on the owner/driver.
Mike I agree, the canyon isn't cheap
But hey each to its own he’s money he’s business 👍
So the Canyon is 425 HP to the crank, and FAR less torque. Even with it's huge weight advantage it couldn't hang. That was a pretty interesting matchup. Looks like torque does matter coming off the line.
Matt needs some brake torque practice. With the numbers he is putting down, he should have easily gapped the Raptor. The dyno could be off too. 😕
Yeah that canyon is putting down some very impressive numbers.. I was shocked to see that dyno sheet. From a roll he would have left that raptor.
He could only make it a closer race. It'll never beat the Raptor because of what it is. He wants a reliable truck that can tow. If he wants an all out race truck? Then he'll lose the reliability but may beat the Raptor
Chevy might be getting some torque management/traction control interference off the line🤔
clovehitch, the amount of boost really means nothing. That is a relative term to show pressure. One could be putting out one pound of boost while the other puts out 10 lb and they could run the exact same power.
Correct me if im wrong. Suoervhargers dont spool up. Only turbo spool up "turbo lag." Suoervhargers make power with son right?
Supercharger is belt driven, and a Centrifugal supercharger (like this one) makes very little low end boost (2psi@ 2,000rpm, 4psi @3,000rpms....with probably 8psi @ 6,000rpms). ..or something like that dpending on the pulley size.
A Whipple, Kenne-bell or TVS eaton is belt driven but max boost is basically right of idle, In by 1,000
My nephew has the Raptor, I have a Supercharged Mach One Lincoln Aviator. Stay Awesome. M. ;)
RAM TRUCKS, did you think that up all by yourself? Sheesh, kids these days.
No such thing as a “Mach One Lincoln Aviator” they are two different things. Sorry
Twin turbo, high maintenance.
So a 450hp / 500ftlbs of torque!!! truck just beat a 370hp truck. yeah... that's what you get for 80 thousand dollars. derp. mindless
Chris Cheezer you dont have to spend 80 to get a raptor. Most I've seen st dealers go between 50 and 60K.
Ford raptors are like 30000 more so of course its faster
How do you "spool up" a belt driven supercharger?
Disappointed In the Canyon :( He shoulda gone with a screw type supercharger
He should throw a couple of turbos in it.
Cam Guy, I'm disappointed in the canyon as well, but I doubt anyone makes a screw type supercharger for it. What he should have done to make the most power, which is what he said he wanted, is used turbos himself.
He still would have lost
Casper Ghost Nonsense. This Canyon was reeling in the Raptor. I'm not GM fan but I like to stick to facts. Only disadvantage Canoyn had was the hole shot and that wasn't helped by the Centrifugal blower on board. All the Canyon needs is a stall. Most people who utilize Centrifugal blowers and have autos know this..some don't.
SirtubalotTX blah blah blah he lost period!!!!
Could have bought a turbo diesel 4cyl.... got a v6cylinder & supercharged it & might be faster than a stock diesel but how much did you pay? You could have chipped n upgraded the diesel n got way more
The *canyon is a 6 speed* . That hurts it if it was a 8 speed might be a totally different story on a short race like that.
The short track hurts the heavier truck. The longer the track. The Raptor would've beaten it by a much greater gap.
So what? That's GM's fault for keeping their outdated transmission. Ford utilizes much more advanced technology, and this test proves it.
The Canyon has a lot less power while weighing almost the same. The transmission would not have been enough to offset it.
That Canyon probably weigh's 700lbs+ less than that Raptor. Just because the new Raptors are made of aluminum doesn't mean they are light. They are only about 400lbs lighter than the 2010 - 2014 Steel bodied Raptors.
You sir did a great job with your son and iam glad you did it nothing better than working on a hotrod with your son or daughter thumbs up 2 you sir
Poor gmc guy. 😂😂😂😂 supercharger failed
Also the raptor has 10 gears! Much lower first few gears
He also said he bought the supercharger for gas mileage... under no circumstance will it improve fuel economy.
People don't realize that supercharger/turbos are band aids for small engines to be fast but also be fuel efficient. It doesn't make them fuel efficient.
clovehitch I realize the pos gmc was outclassed

Coulda just bought the '17 ecoboost f150 and been done with it.. 375 hp. 470 ft.lb. of torque. An extra 100 hp. is just a $500 tuner away.
Fordfanone and the f150 beats the raptor in quarter mile
Instead of supercharging that dinky little gmc buy a real truck!
I want to know what that horn is in the GMC Canyon. They have such whimpy horns
Might get my wife one of these. Nice simple little trucks.
Good race. I'm a GM guy but the Raptor won fair and square. Twin Turbo, more torque, and 10 speed Auto give it a superior setup.
The six spd and a maybe the blower result could be why the canyon lags behind.
Raptor has 5 valves/cylinder, main+secondary stage turbos, 10 spd auto and Sport mode. And that's not the ceiling of performance.
Canyon didn't build boost at the start, while the Raptor absolutely did. Woulda loved to have seen the canyon build boost and launch in 4wd.
Im a GM guy but that GMC exhaust clip they had in the beginning made it sound like a honda with fartcan on it
Needed positive displacement not centrifugal. And centeifual sc acts like a turbo so makes boost later in the rpm range so not entirely miss worded
Shoulda had my 2019 colorado with the LGZ. 400 whp with a mallet supercharger. Also lowered 4 inches which may help.
Both are good looking trucks, would not mind having either one.
Please do a tuned up duramax canyon, stock they go I bet it’d have a better chance than that V6
it's the light bar gm made that slot on the front to bring in air to the motor I was reading about that when I was going to put in a light bar
How about a supercharged sierra or Silverado?
Kendrick C. 2.7TT F150 would smoke them too
J Bouchard You're damn right.
