I like the fact that you can buy two ZR2's for almost the price of one fully loaded Raptor!! Think about that you can buy one to trash off-road and one to drive everyday.
Or for me, I’m saving up to get a diesel ZR2 for off-road/daily and to tow my FR-S to the track after I graduate. That’s all going to be a lot cheaper than a raptor (and I will already have had 7 years of the FR-S as my daily).

Heavy duty's have their place in mostly fleets. Half tons are alright for most everything. Mid sized trucks are for those that want to park in the city and still have those offroading capabilities.
Bought my Xtra cab 2020 V6 ZR2 for $37,500 OTD.....really looked long & hard at s Raptor.....but the turbos & systems complexity made me shy away. Sold my 1998 ZR2 after 168,000 miles....not sure if the 2020 will go that far....the old ZR2 was 5speed manual and still going strong....well maintained throughout its life and still making the new owner happy!
All three of those trucks are amazing, could you guys take a Ram 1500 4x4, Chevy or GMC 1500 4x4 and a Ford F150 4x4 with no special after market upgrades, that would be interesting.
Those front differential gears can't mesh unless they are aligned. All you have to do to get a rapid lock up is to 1) put in low range, 2) engage front locker, 3) turn the front wheels to full lock (either way), 4) move slowly front or backwards. The locker will now engage because the 2 front tires are moving at different speeds and that will allow the differential lock to engage. Worked on my PW ever time.
All badass trucks when you get down to it and each truck has its own place and does it's own thing really well, but the diesel ZR2 is the winner for me.
Nik Sikkema the ZR-2 is by far the best prices, but if money wasn't part of the equation I have to go with the Ford Raptor for its off road abilities...........too bad I can't afford an $80,000 truck.

If you track off-road comp tests, the Raptor nearly always wins. Regardless of your brand loyalty, Ford does a great job on their trucks. Chevy and Ram damn good too though.

67k truck vs a 43k truck, don't care how you cut it that is a chunk of change. Only place the Chevy Struggled was that first hill due to he followed the line the dodge went that messed up the trail and dug holes.

I have the 16 power wagon and I've found the traction control works better than the lockers in heavy rock situation. The ECM stops the tire before it digs a hole or throws a rock. Once you spin the tires in rocks, it's over.
I like the raptor but cant even argue that pound for pound dollar to dollar. The zr2 is king .. If i was in a market for one id strongly consider the zr2 over the raptor because of the savings, similar ascetic, and similar proformance
IWrocker i agree, watching the tires as Nathan was attempting to climb, i could see he needed aired down more. But, to go that low, and on those rocks, I'd rather be on the Ko2's the Raptor had. I have Firestone riderite air bags on rear of my 16 PW and pull 12,000 lbs (26' PJ deckover tilt and the load on it) and those factory 8ply Goodyears just can't handle sharp rocks after they're half tread or less while carrying a heavy load. I lost 3 tires in less than a month to sharp marble sized rocks that pierced a half inch slit through the cords on the middle of the face of each one, just driving dirt roads in rural Nebraska. Went with 10 ply tires and never happened again. Granted Nathan had no load but there is a night and day difference between sidewalls of GY Wranglers and Ko2's and i think aired down more he would've ruined the GY's. Ya, I agree, he'd a made it with different shoes on. Have to admit, the Raptor and Colorado whipped a** though!
Bob Vincent well said yes I ditched my GY tires quick too, then the truck really livened up, mine has been a monster ever since. Just better driver technique and airing down woulda done the trick. I agree the raptor and ZR2 did very good tho. Its a great time for off-road enthusiasts!
This was a good episode. I'd be interested to see how an F-150 with FX4 package (can get one at a much better price than the Raptor) does on Cliffhanger 2.0. And perhaps compare that to a Chevy 1500 with z71 or Sierra 1500 All-Terrain X. Thanks!
With electronic locking differentials on trucks and 4 wheelers, sometimes they will not engage because both of the axle shafts need to be in the right spot to lock in. This can usually be accomplished by driving a little bit and turning the wheel, causing one tire to rotate at a different speed than the other one and thus lining up the axle shafts.
Not mine sadly... Piece of crap,ive had so many issues with it, worst was losing heat twice mid winter when I needed it most. Not a reliable truck but flashy. Trading mine in for a Ranger Raptor or Tacoma TRD Pro if I can afford it, I need a reliable vehicle. I though this would workout but marketing got the best of me.

One thing to remember about the ram is that unlike the other two you can get a power wagon package on the tradesman. You'll get a lot of the off-road features without paying the $60000. MSRP for the tradesman with the power wagon package is $43000

You’ll never convince a TRD Pro owner that they aren’t the best. They always pull the reliability card out. But the truth is the Tacoma is on CR’s list of unreliable vehicles for 2017. And what makes things worse is the dumbasses are paying up to 15 grand over msrp for a truck that’s in 2nd place. Doesn’t make any sense.
I think they will do this probably for the 2019 model. They already are developing high-performance aftermarket parts for the ZR2 including longer travel shocks and a 1.5 body lift to fit bigger tires. It surely will be a raptor Killer then.
I'm pretty sure in one of the modes for the Raptor it keeps the turbo spooling just in case you get stuck then if you do it will send boost to help you get out and the weight of the raptor also helped.
CHEVY DID THE BEST, THEN FORD, THEN DODGE IN LAST PLACE. Looks like it was really weight based results with the loose stone. Dodge also had problems with the front locker not engaging. I have owned all 3 makes and its Chevy or GMC for me now.
Derek that would depend on what you want to use the truck for. Myself for me now i want comfort, gas mileage, and reliability. Because of where i live i also want a 4x4.
You're asking truck advice from a guy that thinks reliability is important and says Chevy is the best. You should really be looking at Toyota's Tacoma/Tundra or Ford's F150 if you're looking full size. Hell, I'd even go so far as to say that from experience the Frontier is a good, capable mid size truck. Best advice is to stay as far FAR away from Chevy and GMC as you can though.
Yes, and let it be available on several different trims / engines. Would be nice for those of us who want to use a vehicle for it is designed for, and does NOT need all the fancy gadgets.
GM need to build the Silverado ZR2. That would be amazing. The also need to improve the ground clearance and the rear shocks mounting to low on the diff on the Colorado.
This was a very enlightening review especially considering I just ran cliffhanger 2.0 myself. I’m sure people were like, just a bit more power Nathan, but I think you guys made the right assessment on it being a weight thing. Now, I’m trying to figure out what truly was the Cherokee Trailhawk’s issue.
Even in an unfair test the ZR2 easily won. Not very fair 2 make the smallest truck drive through the big pot holes the Ram/Raptor made. That Ram is junk, first the locking differential malfunctions and then it gets stuck, Chrysler just can't build reliable vehicles. These trucks are great in their own ways, the Colorado is great for tight trails, Raptor is great at dessert running and the Ram is good for little guys who wanna look tough.
Yet the previous Colorado was shit. Also comments the other manufacturer. I have no doubt a Tacoma can take a zr2. I really don't care for small trucks.
My 1968 M-715 is around 6,000lbs . I'm saving around 300+ lbs putting in a LQ4 / 4L85e / AMG 242 (mil) . I worry that my truck will end up like the Power Wagon, too much weight. Might "bob" the rear and go with an Alum LS down the road.
Personally a fan of full size trucks, but the Chevy is just gonna be more fun doing this stuff and no Chevy fan ,but give credit where it is due, the zr2 has come in to make a mark. Then the price difference in these trucks, gotta pick the Chevy for overall win. Raptor nice, but pulling the big v8 was a mistake, I do not trust that overpowered , overworked, twin turbo v6 long term. All capable vehicles though. Fun matchup . Andre and Nathan surely landed themselves one heck of a gig to call a JOB, I envy them for sure, so much fun at WORK.
The truth is the raptor platform has been around for many years now. None of the other major manufacturers have been able to design and build a half ton with capabilities matching the Raptor. They have had lots of time, what have they been doing? lol How special will the ZR2 be when Ford Ranger Raptors hit the street? It’s amazing the features available from the factory these days. Just ten years ago this stuff was all aftermarket. That’s kinda cool. That dodge would be scary out in the bush. Even for the video it wasn’t gonna lock up. They just can’t build a reliable vehicle.

After the PW dug some gnarly holes the Raptor and ZR2 barely blinked which is impressive. Im glad Dare took some wind out of the PWs sails because it is not the most capable offroad truck. Ill take my 17 Raptor over the PW anyday because after a bit of rock crawling I can take it down some logging roads at 75mph and have a blast. The PW is just too heavy, underpowered, and doesnt have the suspension for all around offroad fun.

I borrow my dads Zr2 as much as I can. Every bit as fun as my Z06. I'm taking it out to the desert this weekend. Awesome truck!
Not mine sadly... Piece of crap,ive had so many issues with it, worst was losing heat twice mid winter when I needed it most. Not a reliable truck but flashy. Trading mine in for a Ranger Raptor or Tacoma TRD Pro if I can afford it, I need a reliable vehicle. I though this would workout but marketing got the best of me.
I don't like GM but that ZR2 is a cool truck.

makattak88 Sure! Look, the Colorado and the canyon are just rebadged versions of the Isuzu DMax. Before the Colorado was the s-10 and before it was the Chevy luv. The only change is the grill and logos.

GREAT video! While I like all these trucks, the higher payload and towing capacities of the Power Wagon make it more useful then the others. Like the old saying, "Every dog has its day!"

One thing to remember about the ram is that unlike the other two you can get a power wagon package on the tradesman. You'll get a lot of the off-road features without paying the $60000. MSRP for the tradesman with the power wagon package is $43000

Check the manual, it tells you why it does that, you do not have to get a anything replaced, mine did it one time..

Rumor is TFLT didn't enter the TuRD Pro because their getting fed up of all it's fans complaining about how it always finishes last.

You’ll never convince a TRD Pro owner that they aren’t the best. They always pull the reliability card out. But the truth is the Tacoma is on CR’s list of unreliable vehicles for 2017. And what makes things worse is the dumbasses are paying up to 15 grand over msrp for a truck that’s in 2nd place. Doesn’t make any sense.

I think they will do this probably for the 2019 model. They already are developing high-performance aftermarket parts for the ZR2 including longer travel shocks and a 1.5 body lift to fit bigger tires. It surely will be a raptor Killer then.

I'm pretty sure in one of the modes for the Raptor it keeps the turbo spooling just in case you get stuck then if you do it will send boost to help you get out and the weight of the raptor also helped.
CHEVY DID THE BEST, THEN FORD, THEN DODGE IN LAST PLACE. Looks like it was really weight based results with the loose stone. Dodge also had problems with the front locker not engaging. I have owned all 3 makes and its Chevy or GMC for me now.
New to truck market, what is the most important feature that should be considered regardless of brand when buying a half ton truck?
Derek that would depend on what you want to use the truck for. Myself for me now i want comfort, gas mileage, and reliability. Because of where i live i also want a 4x4.
You're asking truck advice from a guy that thinks reliability is important and says Chevy is the best. You should really be looking at Toyota's Tacoma/Tundra or Ford's F150 if you're looking full size. Hell, I'd even go so far as to say that from experience the Frontier is a good, capable mid size truck. Best advice is to stay as far FAR away from Chevy and GMC as you can though.

I hope GM comes out with a Silverado 1500 full size truck with a front locking differential like the ZR2. I believe it would be a great seller for GM.
Yes, and let it be available on several different trims / engines. Would be nice for those of us who want to use a vehicle for it is designed for, and does NOT need all the fancy gadgets.
GM need to build the Silverado ZR2. That would be amazing. The also need to improve the ground clearance and the rear shocks mounting to low on the diff on the Colorado.

This was a very enlightening review especially considering I just ran cliffhanger 2.0 myself. I’m sure people were like, just a bit more power Nathan, but I think you guys made the right assessment on it being a weight thing. Now, I’m trying to figure out what truly was the Cherokee Trailhawk’s issue.
Even in an unfair test the ZR2 easily won. Not very fair 2 make the smallest truck drive through the big pot holes the Ram/Raptor made. That Ram is junk, first the locking differential malfunctions and then it gets stuck, Chrysler just can't build reliable vehicles.
These trucks are great in their own ways, the Colorado is great for tight trails, Raptor is great at dessert running and the Ram is good for little guys who wanna look tough.
Yet the previous Colorado was shit. Also comments the other manufacturer. I have no doubt a Tacoma can take a zr2. I really don't care for small trucks.

I'm saving around 300+ lbs putting in a LQ4 / 4L85e / AMG 242 (mil) .
I worry that my truck will end up like the Power Wagon, too much weight.
Might "bob" the rear and go with an Alum LS down the road.

Personally a fan of full size trucks, but the Chevy is just gonna be more fun doing this stuff and no Chevy fan ,but give credit where it is due, the zr2 has come in to make a mark. Then the price difference in these trucks, gotta pick the Chevy for overall win. Raptor nice, but pulling the big v8 was a mistake, I do not trust that overpowered , overworked, twin turbo v6 long term. All capable vehicles though. Fun matchup . Andre and Nathan surely landed themselves one heck of a gig to call a JOB, I envy them for sure, so much fun at WORK.

The truth is the raptor platform has been around for many years now. None of the other major manufacturers have been able to design and build a half ton with capabilities matching the Raptor. 20 degrees from horizontal or vertical?? HD's are good with a plow on the front, but quite often need to pull cable out the rear for retrieval.
Dodges seem to break - a LOT. I'm being unbiased just from my experience and everyone I have known who's owned them too.
Nathan.. on my 2016 PW it has to be in drive but foot on the break to lock front and rear lockers.
It’s amazing the features available from the factory these days. Just ten years ago this stuff was all aftermarket. That’s kinda cool. That dodge would be scary out in the bush. Even for the video it wasn’t gonna lock up. They just can’t build a reliable vehicle.

Nathan: "Power Wagon dont care."....well, it seems the PW cared a whole lot and couldnt make it up the hill at all. After the PW dug some gnarly holes the Raptor and ZR2 barely blinked which is impressive. Im glad Dare took some wind out of the PWs sails because it is not the most capable offroad truck. Ill take my 17 Raptor over the PW anyday because after a bit of rock crawling I can take it down some logging roads at 75mph and have a blast. The PW is just too heavy, underpowered, and doesnt have the suspension for all around offroad fun.
