What does being an adult really mean? | Dr. Henry Cloud

  • Unlike in the distant past, we don’t really have a rite of passage to adulthood. Dr. Henry Cloud talks about how regardless of how many degrees you have, or how old you are, being an adult is not a guarantee based on age or merit alone. So what is adulthood, and how do we get to it? You’ve probably met people that have made it far into their lives and still aren’t an adult yet. Dr. Cloud talks about what it means to be a responsible, independent adult. You may physically be an adult, but there are emotional, psychological and spiritual aspects to adulthood that you may need to grow in. One key to all of this is how you feel. Do you feel like you’re on an equal level with your peers, friends, family and other relationships? If you don’t, this clip will help you learn how to rethink who you are and why see yourself as less-than.

The false teachings of Bill Gothard have had a horrible impact on my life. I wasn't even aware that my parents attended his seminars long after I left the home. After being saved, and joining church, I was unaware of how much these false teachings on patriarchy, superstition, men being in positions of authority but without accountability twisted my christian life. I was condemned, accused of being rebellious, blamed for things I had no control over. This system in the hands of a malignant narcissist ( who is very covert) has been a nightmare. A good man considers the life of his beast, but the tender mercies of the wicked are cruel.

I was abused when I was a child by my parents and others. I suffered from flashbacks and night terrors all of my life
They scapegoated me and would never answer my questions about what happened to me. I think it kept me childlike in my adulthood. Partners abused me also.
    I still have a faith 🙏

Thank you very much Dr Cloud. You're a blessing to many people that may never have the opportunity of meeting you. Please keep up the good work. I really needed this. I'm currently reading one of your books " Changes that Heal".

Would you help with being taken advantage of. I have felt one down and like a child my whole life, I’m 51, and I think I let off signals to users…how do we stop being taken advantage of!

His book "Changes that Heal " is a great help. Getting involved in a community of people that don't want to parent you but help you grow is a great start as well.

You can make good at 18, but still you can carry childhood traumas with you. You could be earning money but you still don't have emotional intelligence.
Working on your emotional issues is different than working on your degrees and making money.
