Easy 4 Patch Quilt Can Be Finished in a Day - Beginner Friendly

  • This 4 patch quilt combines a 4 patch and a 10" square to create a fun twist on a traditional block. A 4 patch is a great starter block for beginners and yet matching seams keeps those more seasoned quilters interested. I have a pack of 10" squares from Joanns and a fat quarter bundle that I am going to use to make this fun 4 patch quilt pattern.

    As a newbie quilter, JoAnn's fake 10" squares were really frustrating for me. I tossed them aside and swore off Joann's precuts! Maybe after a little more experience I will figure out what to do with them!

    • @helenpeddycord2241
      @helenpeddycord2241 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I understand your frustration. I’ll give you a handy pointer from an experienced Quilter. It only took me 12 years to discover not all precuts are exact! Even those high quality purchased from Quilt Shops. Always measure your precuts for accuracy! Some companies will measure the “mountain” others measure the “valley” of the pinked edges. This is an extremely helpful tip to know. Best of luck to you! Welcome to the most wonderful world of art💕🧵

    Yes! That 10-1/2” four-patch yin made from that die is correct - AccuQuilt has included the seams so this block is really a 10” block finished - I’d rather have to trim a bit than try to work with something too small!

    When dealing with fat quarters, cut them into four 9 inch squares. That way you only need 18" x 18" "fat quarter" squares. Also if your "10 inch" squares are wonky, you still can get a decent sized quilt top. But if you're going to use starch of ANY kind, do it at the VERY BEGINNING. Bc you will have some sort of shrinkage on cotton fabric.

    Sometimes when you iron you lose about an 1/8 to a 1/4 inch on one side of your blocks. This is due to shrinkage of the cross grain of your fabric. Iron a block that you know for sure is right and you will see what I'm talking about. That's why I don't iron any more than I absolutely have to until my block is finished. Ironing the 10 inch pieces probably caused a shrink that changed the size.

  • @sandybruce9092
    @sandybruce9092 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Just make sure all the blocks are trimmed to 10” before sewing - I’m not grasping your problem! And of course trim the four- patch from the center!

  • @diannplatt-roberts8692
    @diannplatt-roberts8692 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I very seldom buy precuts for the very reason that they aren't cut correctly. You would think a 10 inch square would measure 10 inches.

      @@helenpeddycord2241 absolutely, however, if they are selling 10X10 the cuts should be at least 10x10 and preferably measure right. some brands are really accurate and some are just not.

    One of the things I have been finding is that a lot of fabric is stated in inches and millimeters. The millimeter measurement is always the right one and it does not match inches well enough a lot of the time. I find it very irritating.

    If we don’t have an Accuquilt, what size should the squares be for making the 4-patch block?

    • @aprilscraftroom
      @aprilscraftroom  ปีที่แล้ว

      You can make them any size you want. But you cut out the same size the Accuquilt cuts the fabric. The only difference is that you have to cut it yourself. 😀
