Sorry, I'm only focusing on the Showa series because the game uses Showa style monsters, so no Hesei or Millennium (Mecha King Ghidorah, Destroyah, Biolante, Kiryu, Orga, etc.)
I really loved this game. I felt like I was truly playing through a Godzilla movie. Hope to see a expansion with more awesome classic monsters. Cards also reflect the monsters in the movie which was a extra treat!
While I agree with most of what Tom said, this is a great Godzilla/Kaiju game. I liked it just fine with 2, but yes I think it's better with 3+. The hand management/energy Management mechanics are actually really cool in this game and bring quite a bit of strategy into it. You can't just move into the opponents space to hit him or attack from range every turn. You've got to deal with some of the vehicles, because they can be pretty nasty and you've got to utilize them and the other Kaiju to toss around into buildings to get energy for your cards, be it movement, defense, or attacking. I like the trophy win system too because not only is there no player elimination, but those cards are effectively gone out of your deck. I do agree with Tom, I wish you could just straight attack buildings but there is plenty of cards that specifically allow you to destroy smaller buildings and vehicles so it's not that big a deal. The art is phenomenal and all looks to be from the Showa era, which is my personal favorite! The difference in the 4 Kaiju is pretty vast which is awesome and I can't wait for more Kaiju to be released!! Give me Mechagodzilla, Rodan, King Cesar, Gigan, and Jet Jaguar!
I feel like directly attacking buildings will be reserved for certain monsters. Thematically the monsters energy just seems like adrenaline and they wouldn't consciously collect that.
Can you bump up the lighting / contrast? My phone is on max brightness and it's still hard to see the components section of the videos lately. Keep up the good work!
Got this for my 50th birthday in January and finally played it yesterday and I loved it!! I am not a player of these games at all and when I read the instructions with my daughter I was totally lost. But once we read them again and as we played the game clicked for us. 10/10 for me.
Whaaaaat!? Never heard of Megalon?! Geez, he was introduced in one of the later movies, ehh 1973? Godzilla vs Megalon, which also had the size changing android, Jet Jaguar hero, and i think it had Gigan in it as a team mate for Megalon. It was one of the Japanese Kaiju movies that was played a lot on cable when i was a kid. Mostly chicago tv station WGN or TBS atlanta always had monster movies on weekends back then.
As someone who learns Japanese since a few months, I'm happy to see all the Japanese text all over this game (incredible for a US release)! :D It makes the entire game get that extra level of theme. Not sure the gameplay is for me, though.
I'm surprised Tom didn't mention King of Tokyo and King of New York here.... noticed a lot of similarities between the games here and wondered if this game is different and interesting enough to warrant getting both. :) 🧙♂️
While not using official monsters, the newer version of Monsterpocalypse is a great game with monsters, buildings to capture and units to crush! It is of course a miniature game so can be a bit expensive to get into though. You also gain power dice and some abilities via capturing/destroying buildings. I still have the old; "The Creature that ate Sheboygan" which is a decent monster vs. human game. Looks kind of neat but not as interesting as Monsterpocalypse.
I love Godzilla, and I think the theme was done well, but sometimes the themeing was to its detriment. Had fun with a 3-player game, but a 2-player game between Megalon and Mothra was very frustrating for Mothra. Megalon has an enhancement he can equip that can block ranged attacks, and Mothra only has ranged attacks. I'm gonna make some house rules that allows Mothra to throw Kaiju, otherwise she could never win against Megalon. Either that, or make the enhancement a discard ability.
I'm hoping an expansion will include Jet Jaguar and Gigan, then we can have some tag-team matches. Next expansions should be Hedorah & Anguirus and then MechaGodzilla & King Caesar. Keeping the ratio of 1 good vs 1 bad would do well. You can also pack less popular monsters with more popular to ensure all expansions sell well.
1.) His enhancement only blocks 1 damage from ranged attacks. 2.) Mothra has 2 cards that do damage that aren't Ranged, "SuperSonic Flight" 3.) She also has 2 cards that take enhancements in play as an additional trophy "Poison Scales" 4.) Megalon only has that 1 card that does that so yes if he gets lucky and gets it out early it would be tough, but Mothra can definitely beat him. Saying she could never win is wrong.
@@AndyV10Hansen True, she has a chance, but it's not fun for the Mothra player. Mothra has to get lucky to draw those cards at the right time, and if those cards get discarded or taken away as trophies, then she's screwed. That's exactly what happened in our game.
King Kong Please that alone would be a seller especially with Godzilla Vs Kong out! Love the game. If anyone is on the fence buy you won’t be disappointed!
I kind of want to see a Shin Godzilla version. Where you are the Japanese government trying to navigate through beureocracy and red tape to defeat Godzilla before the Americans nuke the city from orbit. I only half kid... There could be a fun game there without monsters duking it out between themselves. It has a ticking clock and could be both co-op to kill Godzilla and pvp to try move into political positions higher up in the hierarchy. I am highly tempted to get this monster mash game though. I'm new to boardgaming as an adult and my interest in Kaiju could mean this is a good gateway drug. :D

Am I the only one who absolutely hated the way points are scored? Hit your target with 4 damage, draw from their deck, possibly draw all zeros, they hit you back with just 2 damage and draw 6 points... lame. Would have been better to just count up damage and see who caused the most at the end. Definitely would have felt more Godzilla like. More brawl oriented. Honestly, it's a fantastic game othetwise. If you're leaving scoring to random chance, then why do all the strategic moving, energy management, and brawling at all? Why not just everyone draw from the top of your deck 8 times and see who got lucky enough to have the highest score? Same outcome, less time.
Its way more important than just the scores, and Tom even mentioned it. Its about DEPLETING the opponent's deck. U choose the card to eliminate from their deck, so those wont be an option for them anymore. Its actually a very tactical and clever system, becouse the "scores" are attacks that way as well.
I was really wary when I heard Funko was publishing this game. The last thing I wanted was Funko-pop Kaiju figures! I still don't understand that. In reality it's a decent card-driven game. But it needs some mayhem and randomness. Adding some dice rolls to activate cards would have been an excellent way of making this game far more exciting.
I couldn't care less about an American Godzilla (there's a huge variety in quality and tone in the REAL Godzilla movies, you just can't put them all in the same box). I'll never buy one of those crappy ugly POP figurines, but this game, despite a not so great cover, looks cool (and the figurines look prettier and better made than...the POP ones).
I’m a huge godzilla fan and have been waiting for a miniature board game for ages, unfortunately this doesn’t quite fit the bill from what I’ve seen. While Tom likes the components, I think they should be much better quality and hate the weathered affects on the card stock, it looks like a cheap misprint. Also as a fan, picking Megalon and having Godzilla’s radioactive breath listed as “mega heat ray” confuses and annoys me.
Keep in mind the price point of the game. At $35, I'm surprised the game even has miniatures. The weathered look on the cards I agree though is a bit meh. I guess they were just trying to fit the theme.
Meh figures look cool but gameplay sounds uninteresting. They should have just integrated the characters into Funkoverse as a skirmish game than a hand manager.

This one just didn't hit home with my kid and I. It was just a 2 player game but we were soo bored. May need to try with more before final judgement.
