To honest, KoT Black Edition's official two-player variant works really well for two players. IMHO, It fixed the problems with the original two-player game play.
@@ConeDefenseYeah, Splendor was fine at two, but that didn't stop Splendor Duel being made, and actually surpassing the original (in terms of ranking on BGG at least).
@@ConeDefense I really like res arcana at 2 but I think it's even better at 3 or 4. The artifacts that gift resources to other players when used are riskier, attack cards hit wider, draft gives more variety etc etc. All that to say I'm excited to see how duo mixes things up.
Surprised by this. I've not had a situation where the game has ended that fast. That would be very specific scenarios where someone got super super lucky, but the last couple of times I played, they were decent enough tug of war efforts. Super fast to learn, looks the business and portable and cheap. It's not a mind blower but it does the job nicely.
I find that most KoT games i only ever get one card because the game is over so fast. Which is a bummer because I'd love to build up something. The only exception is if players have opposite cards or counter type cards. Then I've seen the game go for a while and more cards are bought as a result
I usually don't go for them unless I just happen to amass a ton of energy but I've seen people get a bunch of them many times and they usually do well in the game, too. I usually play four to six players, though, and those games tend to go longer than three players by quite a bit.
I like to have a few quick and light games we can play while eating dinner or something. I think I’ll wait to grab it on sale vs. right away but I feel this will enter our collection either way.
I'm more into strategy and adventure games but I'm in the same situation as Camilla where my son wants to play a quick game throwing dice and taking down an opponent. So it fits perfectly into that situation. Quick filler between the end of his homework and me preparing dinner. Light game, fast setup.
Would drafting the track token pieces at the beginning and creating a specialized track to start the game make it more fun? Maybe add some tokens with negative affects to play on your opponents side of the track. Like minus 1 die or lose 2 Hearts when you land on it?
Unfortunately that wouldn't really work with tug of war - you wouldn't know whether you were going back again or the opponent was pulling it towards them
As soon as the How to Play section said that you win if you get both of your tracks into the "special zones" that are only three spaces away, I thought 'That seems like games could end waaaaay too soon, just really fast endings.' And then Tom pretty much said that's what happens a short while later. Maybe this is supposed to be a short game that you play several rounds of back-to-back? The game doesn't look bad to me other than that.
I played it yesterday at Spiel and had the oppositie experience. At some point we just wanted the game to end but we kept pulling. I was looking forward to buying it but I ultimately didn't like it enough. I would have preferred it if it was a 5 min Game.
“You can have it end in one turn”. I have had it where i am out of a fame of king of tokyo in one turn many times. It’s sort of the nature of the game.
Why does this not use all the original kaiju from KoT? Seems to have missed a trick there, I want to be able to use all my KoT monsters in this duel game.
I like the idea of those tiles that affect the track. I feel like a game more focused on that concept could be interesting. Otherwise, I prefer Dice Throne
Wait, you can use the Monster Player Power, cards, and the dice of the Duel game to the old King of Tokyo multiplayer. and Tom's score would be higher. Oh, ignore the tokens you get from the cards.
I dont understand the difference in ratings betwen this game and dice throne. DT is more complex but at the end of the day this are yatzee style game with a big luck factor.
Cause they are very different games. Dice throne is way more complicated with rolling and counter rolling. Cards that can only be played in certain phases. And what seems like way longer. I haven’t played KoT:D but it looks like it will take at least half as much time.
While I get your point, would you feel different if Camilla reviewed this alone (i.e., that more views should be there). Tom has addressed this point before actually - Dice Tower used to have less combined reviews and often the person most excited for the game would play it first and want to review it, leading you to only see that “best” view. Now they have multiple view points which lets you listen to varying perspectives and get a sense of which camp you likely fall in (if you literally only look at whether it gets a “seal” or not, then you’re missing the point of a review).
I really enjoy King of Tokyo and many times there are only 2 of us available to play so I'm looking forward to trying this one. Camilla, if you ever need another player give me a call....LOL.
Sad that Tom rated Unsettled a 5 and shares a rank with this game that he hates. Might as well rate games a zero since that what a 5 means at the dice tower.
@@kookaburrito6771his exact words were “I don’t like it” - if that’s a 5, then 0-4 discerns worse than dislike? 5s aren’t zeroes, but the channel definitely leans towards not much below a 4 ( even when they HATE games). Just because he doesn't like it doesn't mean that it's a bad game and his scoring might be subjective. There's a lot of games and movies that I don't like at all but I wouldn't score them low because of it. Scores should be about the quality of the product, not your personal opinion. Scores are pretty stupid anyway.
@@HarryBuddhaPalmyou will consistently hear them reference a low score with “it’s probably not for me”. Your methodology is not how DT rates games. In fairness, it’s not how MOST board game channels rate, as it’s rather idealistic to think you can isolate that much personal bias. Shelfside tries to otherwise most lean towards personal scores. That said, you’re 100% correct. The scores are useless, the dialogue is what’s important.
The new outro music sounds like something they would play at Tom’s funeral.
Kind of does. They used that in the Awards show.
Wow you’re not kidding.

Res Arcana is getting a 2 player version when the base is literally best with 2. Duel games aren’t really about “need” anymore.

I was thinking this during the whole review, there’s already a great 1v1 Yahtzee game, and it has a lot of characters to choose from
Dice Throne can be finicky with the timing of cards and abilities. KoT is more streamlined.
