I love their old stuff. Mostly Sevas Tra, cause it was very contemporary back in the day and it was fresh to hear honestly sounding female hatered. Yeah there was Kitty and Archenemy, but they sounded more like a bunch of unrelated riffs and screaming and quite contrived, while Otep sounded honest and their songs felt like they know what they want to achieve emotionally, whilst Kittie and Archenemy felt sometimes rather gimmicky.
Same. I'm a VERY Casual listener of Metal and Otep's Sevas Tras album was just so different to other things I was listening to at the time. I stopped listening after House of Secrets (I did enjoy that album though was more into Sevas Tra). I also liked old school Kittie (First 3 albums), I know that instrumentally they got better once Talena and Fallon left the band but their sound just became a lot more generic and I couldn't vibe with it like their older work. Much respect to them for continuing to make music though.

Otep's first album Sevas Tra (art saves)... once I learned the lyrics and meanings behind some of the songs... and interpreted them in my own way... I fell in love with what Otep stands for... even though I am a Christian... I believe what I believe... anywho... Otep wrote songs about people that were broken in some of the most beautiful and poetic ways possible and it's friggen heavy at times... sure some of her albums didn't always win me over... there are two albums that I find especially helpful as a person with Bipolar depression and suicidal thoughts... Sevas Tra and Ascension... and even her second album had some really great heaviness on it with Joey Jordinson on the drums for the faster songs like buried alive I do believe...
This is why I don't watch, read or listen to interviews. All I care about is the music and I love all the Otep Albums. I saw her live last year and it was fucking great! So was Fire From the Gods who was one of the openers.

No one is fan of an art style just by one reason. I started hearing metal becouse of the anger to but at the end, once i have grow up and i'm and adult, the anger is diferent or nonexist. At the end the primarily subject of the metal music is the intensity, the energy they deliver, that's why they use a electric guitar and those strong sounds. That's why many metal vocalist chose the growl and screams to be a part of their lyric interpretation. So you can't tell me you hear metal just becouse the complexity, thats bullshit, you want complexity hear a true symphony. Of course metal can be complex and rich in variety, in fact it is. But we chose metal not just for one reason, its for many reasons. Those how just hear metal for one single reason, after a while become bored and go for another music style.

OTEP herself is more hated than the band itself. She's incredibly high maintenance. If things aren't just "so" then she goes ape shit. The number of bands who get dumped off tours with OTEP or band members have changed in their line up should be a warning sign on how difficult OTEP is to work with. The music OTEP makes is secondary at this point. She's almost asking people to check out her band by being outspoken. It's like a publicity stunt.
Opening bands were not allowed to sell merch during her set, opening bands/all bands had to match her t-shirt prices (your $5 shirt is now a $25/30 shirt) she took over the only other bathroom employees used (we have three: men, woman, and unisex), no meat allowed to be sold, et cetera. Our boss overrode most of the demands but yeah, shit’s wild.

I first heard Otep on a roadrunner compilation cd. It’s how I got into Slipknot too. I was amazed a woman could scream like that. And I’m a Kitty fan. You forgot the worst part...the poetry breaks. Listening to an Otep album is like sitting in a race car that does one lap at full speed, then one at idle, then the next at full speed again. She even puts poetry breaks in the middle of songs that would otherwise be great. If you make a mix of all her albums with the poetry breaks removed it's great...and it's also only about 2.5 hours long.

I loved Otep. I was in that group of people that he mentioned that dictated her as a Messiah. I was part of her super close Covent of people. Her "Beloved" ones as she would call us. The True Shadow Soldiers that actually got to KNOW the woman. I went out to St.Louis for a show while people were waiting in line, I got to walk right in and see her rehearse and physically SEE how she treats people and other bands. It's disgusting. That isn't what steers me away from Otep today though. As I mentioned in a previous comment, it was more of the fact that she had become so political in her views for the last election that she SHUNNED her fanbase. She completely lost EVERYTHING that she made her band to be.

Same here. I never really focused on Otep as a person when I was a teenager. All I remember was stumbling upon their song "Warhead" and absolutely liking it and wanting to check out more of their music which led me to buy 3 of their albums (Jihad, Sevas Tra, and House of Secrets) and really enjoying them. Granted I don't call myself a Metalhead, I only casually listen to some Metal but I really did enjoy Otep for what they offered at the time.
I absolutely love Otep. Heck, I still enjoy them to this day, even after moving on to heavier music. House of Secrets has some songs on it that absolutely rip. Same with Smash the Control Machine, Atavist and several other records. Sevas Tra is great too, even if it's a little cringy and very dated. That said, the hate the band (and she) gets is totally understandable. Extreme PC-ness aside, she seems to have a volatile personality and doesn't get along well with others.
Otep's only strategy to deal with bands better than hers: Accuse them of sexual assault. Terror Universal are 50x the musicians that Otep could ever hope to be, and they only ever released one album.
I bought the very first recording the jihad EP back when I was in college and nu metal was still popular. I still think it's decent. Then her real albums that followed SUCKED. Even the rerecordings of the songs from the EP were just worse versions. And nothing else she did since is any good. I think the EP had a cowriter and producer who was later dropped and that person was the real spark in the music.
Jihad is proof that there are vocal effects used on her voice in that the original Jihad recordings are unfiltered while the rerecordings (and everything else on Sevas Tra) has her growls so processed she sounds like shes growling through a drive through speaker.
She's a lesbian, who gives a shit. Her choice. I still think she is So Fine. Now that being said, her band is great, and any artist who bares their soul and personal issues you have to have respect for! That means she is all in with her profession. That is a lot of bravery. I play drums and pay attention to the music, and I think they are amazing! She is Raw, Brave, and Powerful as hell! And it doesn't hurt that she is Beautiful! I'm a fan. Every one is a critic! If you don't like her and her band, don't listen!

OTEP herself is more hated than the band itself. She's incredibly high maintenance. If things aren't just "so" then she goes ape shit. The number of bands who get dumped off tours with OTEP or band members have changed in their line up should be a warning sign on how difficult OTEP is to work with. The music OTEP makes is secondary at this point. She's almost asking people to check out her band by being outspoken. It's like a publicity stunt.

Opening bands were not allowed to sell merch during her set, opening bands/all bands had to match her t-shirt prices (your $5 shirt is now a $25/30 shirt) she took over the only other bathroom employees used (we have three: men, woman, and unisex), no meat allowed to be sold, et cetera. Our boss overrode most of the demands but yeah, shit’s wild.
Her walking the pink line has nothing to do with the negativity that some people have for her. Last time I checked, a seventy-year-old gay man is still considered a metal god. So I think it's her attitude that rings bells for lot of people.

Poetry is often a coping mechanism when you go through fucked up shit, and she did. After the first couple albums, the subject matter changed somewhat and eventually politics came in to play. That's when they started losing some fan base. The first couple albums are top-of-the-line though.

I first heard Otep on a roadrunner compilation cd. It’s how I got into Slipknot too. I was amazed a woman could scream like that. And I’m a Kitty fan. Only thing I dislike is when band put politics into their records which seems to alienate their fans. You don’t agree with me, then fuck you type thing. They all do it. But hey. I won’t judge and still listen. Even if I still lean heavily conservative. Bands like Otep, Disturbed, Stone Sour, make right wing politics as evil outcasts that have no business existing in their world. Talk about divisive. You forgot the worst part...the poetry breaks. Listening to an Otep album is like sitting in a race car that does one lap at full speed, then one at idle, then the next at full speed again. She even puts poetry breaks in the middle of songs that would otherwise be great. If you make a mix of all her albums with the poetry breaks removed it's great...and it's also only about 2.5 hours long.

I freaking love otep, alot, one of my first and favourite metal bands,
However everything that was said is true and that is unfortunate but completely viable.
I loved Otep. I was in that group of people that he mentioned that dictated her as a Messiah. I was part of her super close Covent of people. Her "Beloved" ones as she would call us. The True Shadow Soldiers that actually got to KNOW the woman.
I went out to St.Louis for a show while people were waiting in line, I got to walk right in and see her rehearse and physically SEE how she treats people and other bands. It's disgusting.
That isn't what steers me away from Otep today though. As I mentioned in a previous comment, it was more of the fact that she had become so political in her views for the last election that she SHUNNED her fanbase. She completely lost EVERYTHING that she made her band to be.

Same here. I never really focused on Otep as a person when I was a teenager. All I remember was stumbling upon their song "Warhead" and absolutely liking it and wanting to check out more of their music which led me to buy 3 of their albums (Jihad, Sevas Tra, and House of Secrets) and really enjoying them. Granted I don't call myself a Metalhead, I only casually listen to some Metal but I really did enjoy Otep for what they offered at the time.

I absolutely love Otep. Heck, I still enjoy them to this day, even after moving on to heavier music. House of Secrets has some songs on it that absolutely rip. Same with Smash the Control Machine, Atavist and several other records. Sevas Tra is great too, even if it's a little cringy and very dated. That said, the hate the band (and she) gets is totally understandable. Extreme PC-ness aside, she seems to have a volatile personality and doesn't get along well with others.
After Atavist, I kind of just said fuck it.

I bought the very first recording the jihad EP back when I was in college and nu metal was still popular. I still think it's decent. Then her real albums that followed SUCKED. Even the rerecordings of the songs from the EP were just worse versions. And nothing else she did since is any good. I think the EP had a cowriter and producer who was later dropped and that person was the real spark in the music.
Jihad is proof that there are vocal effects used on her voice in that the original Jihad recordings are unfiltered while the rerecordings (and everything else on Sevas Tra) has her growls so processed she sounds like shes growling through a drive through speaker.
She's a lesbian, who gives a shit. Her choice. I still think she is So Fine. Now that being said, her band is great, and any artist who bares their soul and personal issues you have to have respect for! That means she is all in with her profession. That is a lot of bravery. I play drums and pay attention to the music, and I think they are amazing! She is Raw, Brave, and Powerful as hell! And it doesn't hurt that she is Beautiful! I'm a fan. Every one is a critic! If you don't like her and her band, don't listen!

If you haven't heard of Monster Truck I highly suggest checking them out. Give their song "Don't Tell Me How To Live" a listen to. It's amazing. That is if you like stoner/southern rock. If I had to compare them to other bands I'd say they sound like the product that resulted if Lynyrd Skynyrd and Shinedown had a baby together and Chris Cornell was a legal guardian.
