I think this episode could also relate to the theory that Evil morty is ricks original morty. And how he used this machine to clear some of morty's memories so that he wouldnt end up like evil morty. This could be rick learning from his mistakes.

Was Rick involved in covering up his existence, and supposed death? Was it just for Morty's sake? Did Rick put the smudge on the telescope, or someone else that was also trying to cover up Mr Lunas' existence?
When Rick was in the zigerion's simulator he ran through a simulation of the moon landing. Perhaps there will be more subtle cues in the future to tie up the loose ends on the moon conspiracy.
