  • SHARADA KOUTHUVAM -
SHE is Sharadha, the consort of Lord Brahma and the giver of wisdom. HER luminous form radiates like the full moon and SHE endlessly bestows boons like the Kalpaka Tree. Holding the Veena in HER hands, SHE abates the sorrow of those who surrender.
A verse from Shyamala Dandakham followed by Sharada Kauthvam...
This Kouthuvam has been composed by Sri G Srikanth adapting the lyrics from the Marati bhajan on Goddess Saraswathi. This is set in Valachi ragam & Misra chapu talam.
    Choreography - Smt.Sheela Unnikrishnan
Music Composition & Vocal - Sri Srikanth Gopalakrishnan
    Mridangam - Dr. Guru Bharadwaaj
    Violin - Sri Embar Kannan
    Flute - Sri Muthukumar
    Veena - Tvm Sri Sounderrajan

Whoever is wondering what those intrincate gestures mean: I visited a local dancing and music school in a village in India and some girls have been studying these things for years and years. They have to learn and understand the language those symbols represent, they are telling a story just with the hands and eye gestures, and the extremely accurate positions of the fingers... It's amazing!

Our whole family went to Greece in 1973, my Dad wanted to find his birth certificate. I was so surprised to find that Greeks did not know how to do any of the traditional dances! Greeks in America knew them all, they were keeping the culture alive with music, dance, and cuisine. And I loved it. I learned so much from my grandmothers about cooking, my Dad played Greek music all the time (and Egyptian, Turkish, Spanish, and Classical music) and my mom was pretty good at the dances. But I fell in love with India when I was about 29 years old after I saw my first movie, it was titled Jhanak Jhanak Payal Baaje with the immortal GopiKrishna. What a dancer, as yet unsurpassed by anyone.

I get so overcome with joy, admiration mixed with a wee bit of envy for the dancer, and reverence for the dance form that I burst into a sob while watching such performances, complaining to Lord Shiva for not giving me this boon. But I suppose...there is always the next life.

Please don't get dejected and rely on the next lives to master an art you like. You may have something else to express freely. Who knows what you have to showcase. Anyway, self discovery is the more fundamental pursuit one has to engage in. Everything else sprouts from that. Wish you well

Very mystical looking dance. Her costume enhances her body movements and positions.Western classical ballerinas think there are so many positions and moves to master but this Indian dancing would have many more to master. Imagine having to memorise a movements sequence this long... Et, um, now where did my right arm go last, where does my right foot go next? And don't slip any musical beats or be too fast or too slow...And make it look gracious, too... Would be very hard to do what she is doing so well.

Bravo. Saludos cordiales desde Perú

When they should want their Indian women get back that talent. Indian dancers needs to get rid of too much break dancing and put more traditional dance moves/styles back in their dance routines. They need to refuse doing those explicit dances and bring back modesty, get rid of all non white backup dancers. They take away the presence of Indian women.
