The dancers are obviously hugely talented, but for me it was really the costumes that elevated this performance to something almost otherworldly. The colors, the selective sheerness, the ombre shading, the drape, all of it looks like some ancient paintings just walked off the wall and began to live and move. Incredible.

For those versed in theater design, the lighting shifts also could make or break this mystique. If ALL of these talents were not so remarkably balanced with equal sensitivity, it would not have worked equally as well. Superb balance and direction and produ ction ethics can be sublime, and certainly were here.

I agree with you. Fighting over borders that the British carved up to make us fight - as they have done throughout the world. India and China's governments will actually get closer going forward, promise. But on an on-the-ground level, Indians will continue to really dislike China, simply because their media says so. Kalavinka (迦陵頻伽) is a celestial creature in Buddhism, said to be dwelling in Sukhavati (Western Pureland of Amitabha Buddha).
Kalavinka has a human head and bird torso.
I think the dancers did a great job portraying it. Love the bird chirping sounds in the background too. 💖

      Cool! Cheers✌️
It had a little bit of appropriatey didge in there too - I'll leave it up to indigenous Aussies as to what they reckon of that. They might think it's cool, depending, or a rip off. I often quite like to see what instruments from different cultures sound like. But a lot of indigenous Australians live in poverty and their unique culture including their arts can be all they have to their name; so we can be a little wary of their arts being used in Chinese products, because ad I'm sure you can imagine, in recent times as their visual art has been faked/forged and mass produced by Chinese manufacturers. Meaning the artists gets undercut which affects how they can support themselves. Doesn't mean that this dance had that intention, and i myself would love to try an erhu, it's just something to keep in mind. Dunhuang is in the desert and the didgeridoo is an instrument associated with desert culture, so there may have been some creative association on that level.

I don’t know how to say it professionally since I haven’t done any further research yet, but as a Chinese, I do remember that the Dunhuang is the Chinese traditional things that adapted from the Indian Buddhism culture, because the Chinese Buddhism was originated from India as well. I think it could happened back in the day where there’s like lots of Chinese and Indian cultures and spices sharing business going on during the Silk Road things? I could be wrong in somewhere (or totally😂), but Yeaah, this Dunhuang thing was originated from the Indian culture anyway, that’s why it got that mainly Indian vibe and some of the Chinese vibe on the dance and outfits. It sometimes becomes a little problematic due to exacerbated nationalism (or dare I say a form of ‘Children of the Dragon’ supremacist ideology) and a frequent urge to make claims of ownership over borrowed elements, especially when they come from China’s southern neighbors, like India. With this type of performance, there’s a tendency from certain parts of the Chinese audience to equate Chinese-inspired fantasy costumes to the proof that the actual performance belongs in Chinese history and therefore originates from China.

This is the Dunhuang classical dance (敦煌) on the ancient Chinese murals. This is about "Silk Road".
The Chinese use Chinese people's thinking and Chinese traditional dance skills to create dances with other ethnic atmosphere (if it is a dance performed by Indians, it is very different). This is a historical memory that happened in a certain period of ancient times. The Chinese can perform elegance and beauty of other cultural performances. Because mixing the spirit of Chinese Confucianism and Taoism culture (polite. Connotation. Yin and Yang is parallel).
Just like Westerners often have similar performances. Use ballet to perform some Chinese cultural customs and stories. But it is still the idea of Westerners to create ballet performances.
(Unlike the feeling of creating Chinese people).

It should be said. Many Asia countries has always been syncretic and borrowed from other traditions from ancient China. Even Indian culture is affected by many Arab culture and Chinese culture.

I've watched this video several times and I think it is the best dance video I've ever seen. The choreography, the lighting, the costuming, the choice of music and camera work are all excellent. Beyond the immediate visual impact though I think it all comes together to create the experience of witnessing divinity. The dancers are purportedly portraying the kalavinka but I thought of the apsara/feitan and feel that this must be how the apsara/feitan were conceptualized and experienced on an emotional and sensory level from the perspective of peoples hundreds if not thousands of years ago. If you want to express the concept and feeling of a tripartite goddess, for example, you can't do much better than this video. Most dance I enjoy on a purely aesthetic basis but this is the only one that had roused a genuine emotional response in me, it is beautiful.

Well done! Reminds me of the wall paintings and sculptures not only in Dunghuan but along the Silk Road in the Western Region.

It's a composed of gravity-defying, assertive, lunging, energetic, precise, mesmerizing that one has to admire while watching these dancers performing.

It is so beautiful and gives a freedom to a personal view on how could be perceived. How I see it is ,is that this celestial creature has 4 different characters, who are living in her. Some time they are like one person, some time they wonder around separately . The dance composition has an incredible classical form! It says so much ! It is a mini theatre really…
The girls are dancing incredible, such a coordination ❤❤❤🌹🌹🌹
