This is something I'll politely disagree. These colleges are at the top because of the funding they receive primarily. Since these univ receive top students (agreed with the video), it has a good atmosphere.
But it is the funding and also the long heritage. Just having academically bright students won't mean a damn thing if they don't get enough exposure

I know I'm far from genius but when we went to middle and highschool, I created a company, sold it 5 years later while we were in freshman year of college. I then joined the mitary because I got bored of how success just came to easily. Now 4 years later, I got bored, I'm going back to finish a degree and he's working in industry. I'd say I've had much more success than he has and he went to a prestigious school. Goes to show that if you want to get into a top school, all you gotta do is your homework.

because this is university, not high school or secondary school. Student at this age can be old enough to decide independently how they do with their study life. Schools from 1st till 12th grade taught you how to be a good student. And it is not school fault that you are not succeed in studying. Its yourself to blame. If prestigious universities lower the standard requirements to let all kinds of students in. Then where is fairness here? Is the effort of good students thrown away?? @KingKami That’s partially right. If you were taught by someone like j Robert Oppenheimer at Berkeley you would’ve gotten a much better education or if you were taught by the likes of resnik, Halliday,Srinivasa ramanujan, Ada Lovelace, grace hopper, David hillbert, Willard Gibbs, Charles Babbage, Stephen hawking,Albert Einstein, Erwin shrodödinger,Niels Bohr, and many more. On top of that you will have access to research facilities and programs you wouldn’t have at a worse college. More of related but the actual education is better for instance if you took math 55 at Harvard you’re Knowledge on mathematics would be much deeper than if you just took your average college class.

We have a giant network of notable alumni and the research opportunities, from international researching to using the most advanced tech, is simply unmatched. Also the extreme admission process makes it so that you learn in an environment with only geniuses around you. When I was in high school people slept during class and never asked question, but here at Princeton prodigies are everywhere and dominate the classrooms. I'd also like to compare one thing... I planned to enroll in Arizona State University which is a public uni with a massive undergrad population, and they only start teaching Calculus in MAT 267. But at Princeton Calculus starts at MAT 103! Also because of how unfathomably rich the Ivy League schools are, chances are you will NEVER need loans or run into any student debt. I literally get paid just learning. These are just the few things on the surface that distinguish world-class schools from most uni's. Also it's 5:52 am I need to sleep bye

When I was a student in my country I was always complaining about the low level and dreamt about going abroad to study. Finally, I got admission at one university in Europe and even if the level was higher than in my country, there was nothing special and I felt disappointed, so I studied hard and learnt what at that time was my 4th language and got admission into an University in Germany , only to realize that there was nothing miraculous or impressive there, the only difference was the money invested by the university in some laboratories and publicity. In terms of educational, pedagogical quality was not even better than my home university and most of international students were terrible prepared (most of them didn't even speak german well) and all were there just as part of the quote of overseas students that every university needs. After graduation I continued searching for a superior educational system and i landed in Austria, Italy but also didn't see anything special there. After all those empty educational experiences, I ended up in China at one of the "best" universities but then, I finally understood .. the students worked very hard to get into that school, passed very hard exams and had amazing achievements before applying, and that's what makes the university reputation. An university full of well motivated responsible creative students will logically have the best results and produce successful people. They were successful even before becoming students. After all those years of studying everywhere I realized I had been waiting to magically become more intelligent or receiving kind of "secret" knowledge from those universities . It doesn't where do you study
At the end it's just you. I have met people, who studied at very small unknown universities , who are more skilled than people who graduated from expensive / private / top universities, but still receive less opportunities because they don't have a fancy diplom from one of the "good" schools.

Thank you for sharing. I'm also a student still in my country and in the past I wanted to go study abroad because I have seen many scholarship students who went to top colleges in Europe, USA, Japan. I thought people admired them and wanted to be like them but ended up becoming depressed. I used to think I would go study around the world like you to be like the scholarship students I mentioned but after going through many stressful situations and reading many comments like this I finally give this up. Thank you for the comment that confirms what I have been wondering for years.

our economic system is built around not providing services to people who need them but mostly making money instead
the more money you make the more likely is your business or service is survive in the society, and because of that businesses or organizations focus on reaching profits...which doesn't necessarily equal better or needed product
damn, we even live in a world where such necessities like food or water or healthcare, education are only being provided for money, and oftentimes it's very expensive. we have to PAY for things without which we might die or live a bad life.

Juilliard School Of Music is also overrated. If you didn’t follow the story during the pandemic (or maybe post-pandemic), they basically rose tuition fees to $51K. This was also in the middle of the students’ education, meaning that if they backed out, they wouldn’t get their music degree. They held protests to demand tuition freeze. On the other end of the spectrum, Curtis school of music remains tuition free.
To put the tuition increase in an easier perspective, say you’re at a restaurant and the burger is $20. In the middle of plating it (after it’s done cooking), they come to you and say, “By the way, for us to serve your burger, it will be $5 extra.” However, since they’ve already made the burger, you can’t back out.
All in all, I don’t know the full story or if the tuition increase at Juilliard has been settled, but I do know that they completely screwed the students over by doing the increase. There’s a difference between paying for quality education and paying because of a prestigious name.

It might be true that ivy league doesn’t necessarily mean better teaching. But its not only the teaching that makes universities great (or not) and attracts talented students. no one will apply to your university just because your entry requirements are stringent. Universities conduct research along with educating students. Therefore universities first need a proven track record of high quality research before talented students even want to join. Then with more high quality research comes more funding and more talented students which in turn increases the quality of your research. Only then its viable to have stricter entry requirements.
