Love my Savage Axis in 243 win. It's a good straight shooter. I'm a little disturbed by the extraction/bolt problem you were having. Mine is smooth as silk. I don't blame you. I never shot a 7mm--08, but I have read much about the cartridge. My impression of it is that it is very much like the 7X57 save that it is shorter and fatter which gives it the advantage of being able to fit into 'short" actions without being at a capacity disadvantage relative to the 7X57. The other advantage is that it does not have to be so low-pressure as to be safe in old Model '93 Oviedo Mausers. Of course, hand loaders with more modern rifles can load their 7X57's hotter, but I am a hand loader who will not do that because my rifle is an old '93 Spanish Mauser manufactured in 1899 as a replacement for a similar rifle that was lost in the Spanish American War during the previous year. I think that the more valid comparison for someone shopping for a new deer rifle is between the 7mm 08 and the .308. All other factors being equal, I think that I would opt for the .308 for its greater bore capacity in today's short barrels and the availability of cheap factory loads in 7.62 NATO. The 7mm 08 does have a superior ballistic coefficient for bullets of equal weight.
You are going to love it, make sure you clean the bolt, lube it and work the action about 100 times to make it very smooth. Also a laser bore sighter, it will save you money by getting it zeroed in quite a bit faster.
Bought my wife a Savage Axis II stainless in 6.5cm that will shoot the lights out with whatever ammo I throw at it. I was surprised. I want a 7mm-08 though.
I love my Savage Axis in .308. The last group you got is fairly typical with average hunting rounds (around 1.5 MOA). But put in some match ammo or handloads and those groups come down easily to MOA or sub-MOA. But as you said, these rifles are made for hunting and they do that job wonderfully and at a wonderful price. That being said, I use mine also as a poor man's precision rifle. As you experienced, the annoying thing is that the groups open up a bit after 5 rounds as the barrel heats up. So I always take my Ruger 10/22 to the range to do plinking with while I let the barrel cool down on the Axis. For optics, I've been LOVING my budget friendly Vortex Vanquish scope with BDC. The weaver scope it came with was fine, but man, I'm in love with Vortex scopes now. I put the Weaver scope on my 10/22. Next year, I plan on getting one of their bull-barrel Axis II rifles in 6.5 Creedmoore. With that rifle, hopefully groups won't open up as much as the barrel heats up. My .308 Axis will then just be used purely for hunting.
My son just bought an Axis in 243 days ago. It is barely floated versus the model 10 and 110s, so I'd you have the forearm torqued sideways at all it's not gonna be floated. May be worth edging that barrel up a degree or 2 with an eraser just in front of the recoil lug or float it that way.
@@user-bn3zo3mh5v I don't bother doing that as it's more than accurate enough for it's intended purpose: hunting. With hunting it's that first shot from a cold barrel that matters (maybe 2nd shot sometimes if you screw up the first). But for target shooting, the main limitation is not the stock, but the barrel in my opinion. Floated or not, the groups and your zero will shift after 5 shots due to the thin barrel unless you get very lucky and get a barrel that has minimal shift when it gets hot. But for hog hunting where I might need to shoot at multiple hogs, I have a 7" barreled AR-15 (registered SBR) in .300 blackout. I also use an SKS rifle and an AK47 for that as well. I just use Savage Axis for either deer hunting or for poor-man's precision target shooting but giving 15 minute cool-down times between magazines. During the winter I like to bring a thermos o hot jasmine tea with me to the range and just relax and talk to other shooters (or just watch them) while I sip my tea or shoot a Ruger 10/22 which is always fun to shoot. So I can't complain.

I have one in 30-06. I added a Boyd’s stock and it is a great rig. The Weaver scope that came with mine, however, was garbage. The reticle came loose after less than 10 shots. Replaced the scope, good to go.
Howdy Adam!! The majority of my bolt action rifles are Savage and I really love them. I have not experienced what I'm seeing on this video with the bolt hanging up on ejection. Typically when I see something like that the first thing I think of is over-pressure in the chamber and the case swelled. That's not usually a problem with factory ammo though. Maybe the extractor just needs a good cleaning and lubing. I LOVE 7MM-08 as a caliber and will have one up on the property in Alaska. A lot of people I've talked to up there moose hunt with that caliber. I can't wait to try that out up there. I'm no fan of Weaver scopes - although they are not bad, but their rings and mounts basically suck!! I'd be willing to bet you if you got a good set (not super expensive) set of mounts your groups would tighten up even more... just a thought.
I remember when you said how you got your name. There was a guy I worked with and when he finished his part he would turn to you and say (now you do that Voodoo that you do) So keep up with your videos do that Voodoo that you do.
We have 2 savage axis in 243 win. Since owning I dropped 2 mule deer, 1 whitetail, and 2 elk, one was a 6x6 bull @ 250 yards and the cow elk was dropped @ 525 yard square through the shoulder with a 105 gr hornady. Sweet little guns.
So a year ago there was a lot of black bears running around and my step mom had this savage axis in .243. So I took her rifle and kill a big bear and it was a double lung shot. bump or tap scope near the scope knobs after adjusting them to make sure they moved and the shooting is not jarring it to changing them! to proper adjustment, ps some weight in stock & stiffening goo stuff, & brass case work with reloads helps tighten groups up

You have to check free float on stock mine came with one side touching barrel. Shave of some material on the stock and it’ll shoot better.
I had the same problems with my axis ll in 308. After a good cleaning it functions pretty good now.
I just got one in 6.5 creedmoor, I am super excited to shoot it
You are going to love it, make sure you clean the bolt, lube it and work the action about 100 times to make it very smooth.
Also a laser bore sighter, it will save you money by getting it zeroed in quite a bit faster.
@@Diemerstein I already cleaned it, bore sighted it, and lubed the bolt
Bought my wife a Savage Axis II stainless in 6.5cm that will shoot the lights out with whatever ammo I throw at it. I was surprised. I want a 7mm-08 though.
I have a Axis ll in 223 and it is wicked Accurate. My daughter has one in 243 and it is a tack driver also.
Floated or not, the groups and your zero will shift
after 5 shots due to the thin barrel unless you get very lucky and get a barrel that has minimal shift when it gets hot.
I have one I won in a raffle for $20! Best $20 bucks I ever spent. It has the laminated stock and it is in 6.5 Creedmoor. I took it hunting with may dad, we took 4 hawgs all head shots!! Needless to say I have to keep an eye on that rifle when dad is around.
Are those comparable to the Ruger American?
Let’s go been waiting for this video
Thanks for watching
I like the Savage Axis. If you want a better trigger then go with the Axis II. It has the excellent Savage adjustable trigger.
My buddy’s wife has one in .270 Winchester no problems yet except every time she pulls the trigger something hits the ground lol.... She a great shot and has shit optics on it ... 😂
When you started talking about doing that 16 click adjustment, I even said "Oh! He's clicking it in the wrong direction!". Yup.
That one was made on a Monday morning
Looks like it needs some polishing and de burring, i would find that frustrating.
Love the show
“It cost me 15 bucks, that just saved me like 5-7 dollars!” Haha love it. In all seriousness though i get paid to do this for people ;) good job! Good video!
I'm actually broke. I didn't get paid at all to do this video
@@WHOTEEWHO Here have a cookie
@@WHOTEEWHO 5-7 bucks for each rifle, or every time you need to change scopes= about 4200 annually. it's real simple math fellas....ask the 6.5 guys, they all have 3.
Hey you never know, you just might get enough veiws to get TH-cam to cut you a check. I get paid to do it because i work on guns for a living.
@@Piecemakerfirearms you tube have been paying that munch if zero for gun channels. Try make go away
I want to get me a cheaper rifle in a caliber big enough to take animals, I’ve been liking all of the Ruger American rifles.
I am a HUGE ruger American fan
I bought mine in .450 because of this channel.
Go woth the ruger american. Much better rifle. I dont have one yet but i got one on the list.
Get a Ruger American. I just got the Predator Model in 6.5, and it feels so amazing and I can’t wait to shoot it.
@@Colok10 was that in 6.5 what?
These are great and I get 1/2 inch groups with match ammo.
I have the Savage Axis XP. All l did was switch out the rings for grand slams. I left the Weaver scope on it to see if it’s any good which it is.
Problems ejecting at first but it solved itself after about 100 rds. and the trigger smoothed out on it’s own.
VERY accurate.! It is a cheapy for sure l bought it out of curiousity and now it’s one of my favourites! Good vid!
I like how you don’t edit out the little boo boos we all make them don’t we !
That’s how we learn.🇨🇦🤠
Shot nephew's savage axis .308 with accu-trigger 5yrs ago. Nicest cheap trigger I've touched off. It shot 2 rounds touching and one 1/2" away at 100yds.
Just bought Savage Axis 7mm 08 muddy girl. Can’t wait shoot it!
Awesome!
Very good gun. My kids both have them in .25-06 and nothing they shoot with them walks away.
We reload for all of our guns a personally we always have been able to get the to shoot one hole groups at a 100 yards
I’m glad you turned us on to Ammo Shop. I too just got an order of Norma ammo, and I’m expecting another Ammo Shop order of Norma any day.
I also have the AXIS 7mm08. Right out of the box had to order a new latch. Haven't had a problem yet! It loves the 140 Grain bullets.
All the zooms around a paper plate with a crossgair in the middle would make a good shirt.
Damn. Cross hair.
I have one in 30-06. I added a Boyd’s stock and it is a great rig. The Weaver scope that came with mine, however, was garbage. The reticle came loose after less than 10 shots. Replaced the scope, good to go.
I love my savage axis in 223 never had an issue with my bolt
Ooooo the 7mm08 is a deer popping pew pellet! Accurate (in the right gun) easy recoil and stops em quick !! Great videos
Adam, I love your down to earth approach. I use paper plates too!
There was a guy I worked with and when he finished his part he would turn to you and say (now you do that Voodoo that you do)
So keep up with your videos do that Voodoo that you do.
How did wtw get his name
Savage makes some awesome guns I have a couple all run good and they are accurate for me at least. Great video WTW
As many times that you sight rifles in and you go the wrong way. Priceless. Fun channel.
I have a savage axis 2 in a 30.06 absolutely love it adjusted the trigger and changed the stock to a Boyd's stock
And I also have a savage axis 2 with iron sights chambered in 30-06 I killed 2 moose and 1 mule deer. And I also have one hand and people said that taking out the bolt is hard but not for me it’s easy
Love my axis in 6.5creedmoor
The Axis rifles are great budget rifles. A little less expensive than the Ruger Americans, and close to the same quality.
Thinking about getting a 30-06 savage axis but what the difference between that and savage axis 2
I took the OEM one off and put a Red Field Revaluation scoop on it and Savage axis like to be wet oil in it.
Just picked up this same gun in 223, put a 3/9/40 crimson trace scope on it. Haven’t got to fire it yet, hopefully soon. Thanks again for all the great videos, good shooting and my best to The Who family. 👍🇺🇸
I had the same issue with federal ammo in axis being hard to remove after firing other brands cycled fine regards from damo .
My 6 year old son got his first deer with the youth model 243 caliber and weaver scope. It works and great price.
Awesome that you got a Savage can't wait to see if the barrels accuracy improves as you shoot it after a couple boxes of shells you should try this Federal ammo again see if it gets any better
I love watching a whoteewho video every morning! Also, I shoot my friends savage axis. It's a great rifle in 270.
Appreciate you watching Caleb
My savage axis has worked flawlessly since I got it. Put a spring kit for the trigger and shoots great. Smooth.
most scopes will move when first adjusted , i usually tap it with my knuckes.
Maybe the better ammo will close up group. Hey call your Gunprime guy and find me a Springfield XDM in 10mm like yours . Lol, don't need but just want one. Thanks
I adjust my clickys the same way, just guestimate and seems to work every time.
I have the Axis in 223 and an Axis 2 with the Accutrigger in 350 Legend. I also have a Savage 110 in 270. All 3 of them run smooth and shoot Quarter size groups at 100 yards. I have not shot the 7mm o8 but I have heard that the Federal Ammo in that cal. tends to jam up.
bump or tap scope near the scope knobs after adjusting them to make sure they moved and the shooting is not jarring it to changing them! to proper adjustment, ps some weight in stock & stiffening goo stuff, & brass case work with reloads helps tighten groups up
I was worried about that rifle to start with. Glad to see it sighted in. Great video Who_Tee_Who 👍👍
I have the axis in 22-250 and 25-06. Both shoot good groups, until the barrel gets hot. Then they string the rounds a little. I put a MCarbo trigger spring in both and it lightened the trigger to about 3 lbs.
Got my wife that same camo pattern in 243 savage. Its a winner. Hope she works good for ya. I have the Savage in my 22-250 with got the accu-trigger. Cant go wrong. Who-tee-who
🦌🦌🦌
I have 2. One in .223 and one in .308. I love both. Have put several whitetail down with the .308. Just need to make sure you take off the weaver bases and scope rings and locktite everything. Missed a deer at 110yrds due to my weaver base being loose. Did my scope rings, but didn't think about the bases and when I took it apart, found the base just flopping around under the ring. 🤦♂️
Love mine, but like you mentioned, trigger pull is long. MCarbo makes a trigger kit for them to reduce it by 40%. After getting my CVA 35 Whelen, realized the difference in trigger pull, but still love both my Savage Axis rifles.
I love my Savage. Mine is a Model 10 in 6.5 CM.
But they do make the axis in 280 AI so that’s a plus
I own weatherby sako & cva for hunting rifles. But that looked good.
I like my axis .308. I put a bolt lift kit in mine and tactical bolt handle and a Boyd's prairie hunter stock. I had a dude make me a 10 round mag for zombies.
Who made your magazine? Been dying to get a 10 rounder for my Savage, don't want to spend $300 on one though, that's just crazy
@@Thousand_yard_King darkeagle customs. It's around 120$
My savage axis in 22-250 is one of my favorite rifles great rifle for the money 👍
My wife's. 308 axis had that issue with the bolt til I oiled it then after that it hasn't had an issue yet. Great video
I'm probably going to get one of them. I hope it's dependable.
Great budget price for a great hunting rifle! I know Remington and Mossberg have start to complete with the Savage budget market with Remington 783 packages and Mossberg 404 series.
Be careful of anything Remington right now. They have had quality control issues the past five years.
That bolt sounded very dry. I like that rifle, cool, I like the 7-08 round, picked up a TC Venture last year, in that cal. like them, the round and the rifle! Like my Savage in 30-30 too.
