Jackie Chan also promoted Mitsubishi like hell. Almost all of his movies in the 80s and 90s were seen him driving Mitsubishis.
the bosozoku mitsubishi mini van from "wheels on meals" goes hard.
Police story car chases are on iconic.
The Evo IV in “Who Am I?” was absolutely iconic.
He was under contract with them to only drive there cars
what about the evo 3 and the gto from thunderbolt? those were fire. and the pajevo from who am i.
Ah Mitsubishi, my favorite ac company
my favorite marker company
My favorite TV company
my favorite elevator company
My favourite pen company. Seriously Uni ball pens slap
My favorite heat pump company
For those that don't know, Mitsubishi manufactured the Zero plane during WW2, one of the most iconic aircraft of all time.
they named it Zero for the amount of times they landed back at the airport they took off from after facing an American.
i definitely wouldn't say of all time. that's wildly outlandish
Which is why their factories were destroyed. Just like America and Nazi Germany, civilian manufacturers were co-opted to build war machines. Not saying it's good or bad. Just saying it's what happened.
@@PhilhellenicAgori I don't think so. It could out turn and out climb all allied fighters until the Hellcat came in 1943. And even then the only tactic was slash and dash. The Zero is a to 10 contender in many best of lists.
And they got shot down by American P51 Mustangs and Boeing helped🤷🏽♂️😂😂 Also, VW, BMW and Skoda made the Nazi vehicles. Cool huh.
When Mitsubishi fell off subaru also started falling off and now we’re getting to the stage where subaru is doing the same thing now
competition drives innovation
hopefully toyota will make subaru get their crap together
Subaru still make interesting cars, the BRZ, WRX and I like the wilderness editions. NOTHING in Mitsubishi's current line up make me look twice. Comparing the current state of both is waaaay off the mark.
Nah. Subaru is still very much Subaru these days. There's still the brz, wrx and their rally scene. Subaru hasn't fallen off. The wrx isn't dead and the STI will return at some point and in some sedan-form
Why tf is subaru catching a stray😂
They still makes some fun cars on top of their boring line of suv’s. The WRX and the BRZ still exist yk?
You beat me to it lol@@arutezza
Mitsubishi downfall in one of the most tragic and sad events in Automotive History. The 80s to 2000s were the Golden age of Mitsubishi
Atleast mitsubishi themselves know they're problem
They said themselves we can't do anything fun were trying to pay off our debt first
And that gives me hope
The 1940s as well
They are better now troll
@@allentoyokawa9068 said the actual troll. New cars are basically Renaults and name plates from the the legendary original cars onto huge pieces of hot trash. What a stupid comment. Get out
@@allentoyokawa9068 Your comment clearly shows that you're the troll who think new Mitsubishi cars are better. But they're not and they never will be. Just lame boring SUV with name plates of legendary cars and rebadged Renaults. Mitsubishi Motors died when the evo 10 ended.
I recently went to Japan. Mitsubishi is everywhere, not just on the street. It seems like they're focusing on their appliances and public transport, but I still miss seeing what brought them to the greenlight.
Yes I assumed that they are divesting their resources from their automotive division towards other more profitable sectors for the conglomerate (like electronics) but still I miss their sports cars from the past.
Yeah I had a mitsubishi vcr player. An AC unit as well
They have done all kinds of work for a long time, they also do engineering and manufacturing under mitshubishi heavy equipment
mitsubishi makes everything from electronics and a/c to tanks and AA systems , they dont rly care abt cars anymore
@@bryanlolwtf04 It's not inherently a matter of diversifying, just like Subaru (FHI) Mitsu has always been Mistubishi Heavy Industries (MHI), they've made these things for decades (think WW2 planes along with air conditioners and other equipment) and that's what allowed them to build good cars, they have a lot of manufacturering in-house, not sure what their infrastructure is nowadays but since they're still incredible appliance manufacturers I'm sure if they cared enough to put the money in they can easily make a quality yet affordable car that has some excitement - albeit unlikely considering they seem to be focused on profits over public image
The Montero would probably unironically bring Mitsubishi back to a competitive state here in the US, my Mom had one and she loved that car.
I have one and can confirm your mom is right
I had a Montero Sport, that thing was awesome. I gave it to my mother in law with 220K miles when the AC went out, she got it fixed and rode it for like 5 years and then traded it in.
The montero sport and triton/L200 are everywhere outside of America, my dads first truck was a triton, the thing was bulletproof, I’ve driven the new one as well and has a nice interior and great little 2.4 diesel engine which gave me nearly 30mpg, although i think the montero sport would sell way better than a triton in the states, the triton is too much of a work truck compared to the trucks in America, a tad too small and not refined enough
When i was learning to drive my sister had to use my family’s mazda most of the time so she could go to work/school, so i never got much time to learn until my friend eddie let me practice on his old montero, thing was an absolute beast, we had zero problems with it until around 300,000km when the trans went on strike
They'll have to find a good petrol engine if they decide to bring the Montero (Sport) back to North America. Maybe the 3.8 V6 from the Frontier?
JImmy really shined in this video. I can see a grand tour syle donut episode and Jimmy driving a JDM in it. Looks like Donut is back too.

I still have my family's old Mitsubishi TV. I thought they were an electronics company before I knew they were a car company when I was little.
They are an electronics company. They're an everything company
They even sold pencils

What about 3000gt?)
Lmao i was just playing grab turismo 3 last night b and scrolled over v my Fto and was like oh i forgot about this one lol
Mitsubishi was once great, even building a rival to the skyline GT-R - The GTO twin turbo, a car that beat the skyline on paper. They had the eclipse, a strong rival in the entry level market. And of course, the lancer Evo, the rally bred monster machine that ate everything in it's path. But now, the eclipse is an SUV and the last time Mitsubishi made a turbocharged 2 door car was the aforementioned GTO, which lasted only 1 generation. Even the Evo X was a shadow of the previous cars.
The GTO was 3 generations and it beat the Skyline on paper and at Pikes Peak multiple years.
@@twizted3k 4 refreshes (90-93, 94-96, 97-98, 99-00) but no actual generations. They’re all the same chassis just with minor changes sorta like the S5 / S4 rx7 FC
I think the evo X is pretty badass. That 4b11 can take a beating
Tbh the 4b11 is a big improvement over the 4g63 in several areas including turbo spool time, head flow and rpm. The one negative is the aluminum block with a semi-closed deck. It just cant take higher boost pressures. But you can get more out of it with lower boost pressures because the heads flow dramatically better and more consistent.
@@Nitro-fu7rv I don't mean to hate on that car, it's still a very impressive machine. But I think the earlier Evos were a different level.
The thing is, Mitsubishi is making tons of money in Asia selling SUV's (Pajero sport/Montero Sport), Outlander phev and the Triton(Strada), plus small cars like the mirage and Xpander, Xforce. Plus they make a ton of industrial equipment. So I don't think they will release anything exciting very soon
Maybe we can start a petition for Mitsubishi to become cool again.
🎉Facts 💯
They’ve essentially given up on the US market.
Nah mate, unless Toyota take over Mitsubishi from shitty Nissan/Renault alliance so there's nothing we can do about it. Their recent revival of Ralliart is just sucks ass. Atleast im hoping they could do some hardcore Ralliart version for Mirage,Attrage but it seems impossible tho.
Mitsubishi itself are not going anywhere, they build spaceships and missiles ffs, only the automotive division is down.
@@flywan exactly man. They got more lucrative industries to worry about rather than building fun cars
And to think people were complaining about the Supra being a reskinned BMW. We’re lucky it even came back as a 2 door sports car.
Mitsubishi had it rough in th e 90’s taking on Toyota, Honda, and Nissan with fwd and going against Subaru with the awd side. Then the Japanese stock market really messed them up.
Feels like a lot of car companies are loosing their soul, not ran by actual car people but accountants and suits. Even the cool cars with “race heritage” feel like they’re just a cash grab, taking advantage of car enthusiasts.
Cough Cough MK5 Supra Cough Z cars Cough
Yeah my new corolla looks similar to kia's, mazda's etc.. CRV's, Rav4's Mustang-E and all those 'crossovers' look the same..
I even had to pay a $2,800 dealer 'FU'-markup and the guy in the next breath told me to be thankful they're giving me TWO keys!, they typically only give people ONE key and make'em pay 500$ or more for the spare.. any extra way to squeeze a buck.. (it also cost 109$ for a oil change from the dealer.. for a corolla..)
Then there’s the Mitsubishi enthusiasts keeping the older legends alive 🚀
I know everyone hates them, but I had a 4th gen eclipse gt. I loved the thing, had it up to around 180k miles until a shop broke the engine when working on it, and it just wasn't worth fixing at that point and they denied it. I would often race and beat similar cars like mustangs and other sports cars. Then of course they killed the eclipse and brought it back as a crossover which was a slap in every eclipse owners face.
@@GrumpyWolfTech the 3rd and 4th gen Eclipses are underdogs. They're not as cool as the 1G and 2G, but they're still sports cars with quite a ton of power in the 3.8 V6 models. Reliability is also good, I think they are underrated and stand in the shadow of the first eclipses
@@grunkohlaktionar7474 Yeah sorry they're not sports cars whatsoever
@@carsaregood911 of course they are, what else?😂 They have a ton of power, 263 hp in the V6, they look like one (good looks are obviously subjective), and they perform. They are FWD, yes, but so are others.
@@grunkohlaktionar7474 shit chassis, V6 is from a Galant/Pajero and has no sporty characteristics
@@carsaregood911 4th gen cornered great, no clue what you are talking about, did you ever even drive one? And don't tell me you drove a GS, those were crap. The automatic transmission was actually really good, especially for a 2006. I bet you were one of the mustang drivers that like to pull up to me and race then lose. 🤣
My wife drives an Outlander, and it has been a really reliable car. My last car was a 2011 Outlander, and it was honestly a really well designed SUV for practicality. The Mitsubishi dealer tried to get us in the door to look at a new Outlander when my wife brought hers in for maintenance, and they were making some pretty tempting offers. We went in to talk about it, and apparently it was a big lie to get us in the door. They couldn't do anything much on Outlanders, but they were willing to give great deals on the Eclipse Cross! We walked over to look at one, and we were both like "nah, this thing is junk". We were so pissed off that they wasted our time.
Also, I was just in Aruba, and there were really cool Mitsubishis all over the place. A lot of things that I've never seen before.
The problem is money... Is always money
Aside of that Mitsubishi also doesn't care about enthusiasts' cries nor understand the importance of a halo car or a sporty car to lure people into the showroom and take interest in other models rather than to make fat profit by itself, unlike Toyota, Honda, Mazda, Nissan and even Suzuki and Subaru (this might sound strange, but look at the WRX Sedan and rumors of STI version in works, BRZ, Swift Sport and Alto Works RS) who understands.
@@PlatinumNaththe amount of uninformed in this post.
@@semicolon101go ahead and inform us then
Thank you Donut for making more videos of our favorite cars. You’re really hitting your target audience with your recent videos.
probably the same thing as every other manufacturer. all these car enthusiasts say "omg what a great car... can't wait to buy it after 10 years in the second hand market." and combine that with the fact that these sportier cars are sold far less often, you get an overall stupid financial decision for manufacturers to make "cool" cars.
not to mention the ongoing trend of older people typically being the only demographic with enough money to buy cars and what's the deal with older people? they don't want a low riding, stiffer than rocks suspension, extreme NVH sports car. they want something more quiet, comfortable, easy to use so why should manufacturers cater to a minority? they go out all their way to make a car that enthusiasts like, only to find out that they complain about anything and everything, and only 10-20% of this demographic actually has money to buy the car to begin with...
I mean, I'd say it's more of a socioeconomic problem that car enthusiasts in their 20s - 30s can't afford sports cars new. How many of those younger enthusiasts do you know who can justify dropping 30, 40, 50k or even more on a new car? It's just sad...
@@Jumbojet776 i would agree. there's a lot of financial stress on those younger generations whether it is student debt, mortgage, marriage, entry level jobs, list goes on.
hence why manufacturers don't cater to this minority and rightfully so.
All Mitsubishi would have to do is come out with a proper Evo or Eclipse concept car (not some crossover bullshit) with likelihood of making production and people would care again, it's not rocket science
They’d do that and then nobody would buy it because sports cars don’t make money
Owned a 2018 Outlander with S-AWC as a family run around and it was great. Have to sell the family cars in order to eventually get back to the performace market.
Mitsubishi....best cars i ever owned. Had 3 and they all got over 350k miles.
💯
Mitsubishi really needs to bring back the Mitsubishi Eclipse, Lancer Evolution and the 3000 GT.
Why would they bring back cars that people don't buy?
@@samuelgarrod8327 people might've not bought them, but they could serve the right purpose as a halo car or sports car that attracts customers to their OTHER cars. However Mitsubishi doesn't manage them correctly and also only sees them as profit/loss things rather than the fishing lure of customers.
@samuelgarrod8327 no one buys the Current model Mitsubishis, so what's your point again?
@@samuelgarrod8327 People aren't buying these modern SUVs, if they came out with a high end sports car to compete with the supra and GTR called a 3000gt it would sell.
The last Evo generation did bad, because they thought plastic intake manifolds were good ideas. Enthusiasts could see the quality dropping
. Those cars dont bring in money if so then not alot, toyota can afford to keep the supra cause theyre the biggest manufacturer in the world. They have other cars they can profit from so they dont have to worry about those cars being a flop
Well shit, I own a mitsubishi Outlander and i really love it. It's nice to have something reliable next to the shit boxes.
💯
It is part of the shitboxes hey.
Also have an Outlander sport, what donut doesn’t get is that these are the bread and butter cars that actually male they money, if the base is sorted they can yet again start to pursue some exciting vehicles that sells 1 for every 100 appliances.
Maybe im a shit box but the appeal of these crossovers are small, easy to use family cars that are uncomplicated and reliable.

Why does everyone need an suv? Most people just use them like vans with the added negative of me not being able to see past anyone in my normal ass car.
Because people dont want to look like a lame dork in a minivan or proper van, which.... In my opinion, actually makes them more lame rather than cool for avoiding the rational choice of vans to do the job its better fit to do.

I would curse a lot working on my 1st gen eclipse, but in hindsight no different then really any other car of that era.
That car was way easier to work on then most of them today. I could replace the alternator on my eclipse in 30 minutes in the parking lot, meanwhile my wife's Hyundai v6 requires you to remove the fender well and unbolt the ac compressor!
@@jeremyjohnson2129 ..yeah on a 3rd gen prius, to replace the headlight housing theres 3 bolts to remove each one.. 2 are easily accessable from the top, but of course that 3rd bolt is hidden under the bumper, so you gotta waste an extra 30mins or more and drop the whole front for that one stupid screw..

Fiat sells a lot of cars in countries such as Italy/Brazil/Argentina, they do just fine, besides Fiat group sells a lot of cars in America if u think about it, since they own Dodge/Jeep/RAM, the problem with Mitsubishi is that when you think about buying a Mitsubishi u go for a Honda or a Toyota.

The fact that mitsubishi hardly ever used the 1st gen eclipse for racing is wild to me. It had the same 6 bolt 4g63t as the evo, the same AWD system, and it was about 800 pounds lighter because it was a 2 door, and it had pop up headlights

Always loved the 1999 Eclipse and Evo VIII and I do have 1:18 models of one of them (from the Fast and the Furious of course) and they are so on my bucket list. I'm just happy I got to enjoy the glorious days of this car manufacturer, and I really do hope that Mitsubishi will be great again.
In europe the colt returned, as a clio rebadged, but returned, and its a clio so its a fun light funny car to drive, i was expenting for you guys to get it but seems like not, but yeah its the begining of the return of the cool cars
Funny thing is, they sell more of those rebadges in Germany than Renault does 😂 better warranty and overall brand reliability
And the new generation ASX (which is the RVR in North America) is just a rebadged Renault Captur. At least the ASX is no longer outdated. But because it's now a rebadged Renault Captur, it's not coming to North America as a next gen RVR. I'm sure the RVR got discontinued in North America after 2021.
15:38 “doesn’t even look like one wtf” my thoughts EXACTLY 😂😂💯
HOW does Nolan not fit in that Eclipse?
I've seen them before, they aren't that small.
Is the seat modded? (It doesn't move back like normal?)
It was an aftermarket bucket seat, the owner is prob smaller so they put it in for hence a smaller person. Just my guess.
Must be the seat, I am 6'3" and I have owned 2 1st gen DSMs, and driven/rode in numerous 2nd gens.
My family owns several modified Mitsubishis like EVO 8, V6 Eclipse and few turbo Colts. My dad started on and 87 Galant and loved these cars ever since. I really like Jimmy. You can tell he’s genuinely passionate about what he’s saying
The 3000GT, what a legend.
Wait, how did it start with the GS? You meant the GST? The motor mounts are reversed in the rs and RG eclipse.
No. Absolutely all 1st gen/2nd gen eclipses where transverse mount (left to right). Also no such thing as an RG eclipse (at least for 1st/2nd generations).
Eclipse RS = base model with Chrysler motor
GS = 46G3 engine and FWD, GST = GS + Turbo, GSX = turbo + AWD.
In both generations you could make a GS into a Turbo model (though modifying a base GS to take a turbo costs way more then just buying the engine with turbo)
Only in the 2nd gen was it possible to convert the FWD to AWD because the 1st gen had too many variations in the chassis that prevented that conversion.

I own a 19 outlander. it has been reliable, and surprisingly capable for our assorted campouts and trips. the 5th, 6th, and 7th seats are so small, they're basically unusable. But there's solid cargo room. It's underpowered for its weight. and some cheap electronics have failed. since buying one, i wouldn't buy another mitsubishi. but we'll drive this one til the wheels fall off. Dealerships are closing. product support is tough to find. basically, it's a dying brand in america. Our subaru is better built. My f150 is too. the mitsubishi feels cheap to own and drive. It's my daily driver. it's the little suv that could. i both love it and hate it, leaning more toward love. But i look forward to my son learning to drive so i can give it to him, and i can buy and daily drive something else. He'll get a solid reliable functional utility vehicle. and i'll never own another mitsubishi.
The 97 Mirage DE Coupe was the 2 door poor mans lancer. It was my first car and I made that little thing look badass
You didn’t mention the Delica… the D7 is due next year and the actual D5 is the only JDM 4x4 offroad Minivan and with a diesel engine.
They also haven‘t given up on Germany. The ASX was a hit seller, and in my opinion a nice and very reliable car.
They are now selling rebatched Renault Clio (Colt) & Captur II (ASX II) beside the Mirage and Eclipse Cross.
I‘ve driven a Colt Z30 from 2012 and a SpaceStar from 2003. They were models made especially for the European market in the Netherlands beside the Volvo V40 and Smart forfour. Good value and damn reliable and robust cars. Sold both to a friend of mine The Colt still runs with 250.000km. And the Space Star is now 21y and still without any rust.
I am so glad to see Jimmy being a host more, he really is something unique to the Donut cast. Would love to see him and Steph on more duo projects like with the lowrider

Donut really did fall off after the buy-out, and the employees know it
love the mgsv sfx in this vid
The upcoming Pajero will be great. They are releasing it as a Land Cruiser competitor.
Donut is actually very similar to Mitsubishi in a way, like how Mitsubishi went from making awesome cars to mediocre cars, kind of like how Donut went from making awesome videos to making mid videos! This one's pretty good though
My Dad and I do not like the fact that Mitsubishi made a Crossover SUV with the Eclipse name
I missed these video essays! Excited to see more on the channel.
Mitsubishi has been one of the main sellers in Puerto Rico for decades and way before the F&F movies it had a cult status among car enthusiasts. The two best sellers for a long time were the Montero(aka Pajero) SR and the Mirage Technica Evo(in mainland US the Mirage Coupe). Still today you had either a Toyota, Suzuki, or Mitsubishi.
My ‘15 Lancer SE was an absolutely wonderful daily car for a great price. First new car I ever bought. Granted it was ‘08 technology but it was very well built and had a lot of great attention to detail in its design. It never stepped out of line once on me in terms of reliability. Sure the interior was filled with plastic, but plastic doesn’t wear out and every time I washed the outside I fell in love with it again.
Sudo Kyoichi, Initial D: The Mitsubishi EVO hero.
Mitsubishi: Drop EVO, make EV.
Sudo Kyoichi in MFG (Story after Initial D): "I hate EVs!"
The saddest part about whats happened to Mitsubishi and other manufacturers (Looking at you, Ford), is that there were literally teams of people that sat through countless meetings over months of development, and not one person raised their hand and said "This is stupid."
My sisters bd had a like 08 Galant. Shortly later my brother in law moved in with us from Germany and needed a car so he bought it from her and transformed it into a surfer dude car by removing the back seats some of the truck to make a bed. Dude also fixed it up to run better than the day it left the lot.
Man, my dad used to have a 3000GT. It had the big ole wing and the gaudy but charming chrome wheels. He said it was the final model year (so 1999?) but I think he said it wasn't the VR4. He sold it since the family was pressuring him to sell it since they said it was, "Time to start a family" when I was born. So unlike Vin Diesel, he didn't keep his cool car but instead he did it for "family" 😭.
Absolutely love my 91 3k VR4 and my old 500hp Evo X. Modern Mitsubishi is just trying to stay afloat.
In France, Mitsubishi recently made a big deal about being back. Turns out they sell a rebadged version of the Renault Clio, an extremely popular urban car. They barely bothered to cover the spot for the Renault logo. The mighty has fallen.
Evos were my favorite JDM car growing up as a teen. I was devastated when Mitsubishi announced they were discontinuing the line.
I owned a 1994 Mirage with the 1.5 with zero power options (no power windows, steering, etc.); by no means a fast car. HOWEVER, it was a fun car to drive and provided awesome MPG. Throwing it into corners was hilariously fun and it was cheap to maintain. Miss it sometimes...
