Today I'd like to share a free and easy quilting tutorial to teach you how to make a signature quilt. Signature quilts are a fantastic way to celebrate, honor, and/or surprise a loved one, and they make for excellent gifts (and I should know - my kids made me one for my 50th birthday and I absolutely LOVE it!).
Whether you use it as a "guestbook" at a wedding, gift it to someone who needs to know how much they're appreciated in a time of need, or surprise someone on a special occasion - the recipient will no doubt feel the love that goes into it. Be sure to download the link to the free quilt pattern PDF at the link above, and let me know your questions, thoughts and more in the comments!

I’m so grateful you did this! I did one for a friend who was in Hospice… he had served our church as an Elder for many years. It ended up covering the memories table at his Service.

Mary, I would LOVE to create a signature quilt for my husband’s milestone 60th birthday next year, but many of our family members live on the East Coast (we’re in CA) and they are unable to visit…any ideas as to how I could have the family participate from a distance? Perhaps send them stabilized, premade blocks to sign and return?

Yes - that's what my family did. My daughter made up the blocks sewn and with freezer paper already added. She did send everyone fabric markers. I would also mark seam allowances on each block as pictured in the video. You could actually send out several blocks in one envelope with a fabric marker and have someone responsible in each area to get the blocks signed and mailed back to you. The pens are about $15.00 for 6 on Amazon - so just over $2.00 each. You may consider asking people to buy their own marker (specify the brand and where to get it) and then have them sign the blocks and mail them back. OR you could just buy markers for everyone and consider it a party expense. I think it's a wonderful idea and I know how much I love mine. For something like this everyone is pretty good about participating from my experience. Good luck and please let me know how it goes!

@cindvanhoy4006 …did you already make yours yet? If not, Maybe what I learned/did may help you from when I made a signature quilt where some folks were out of town.
      1. I had them send me by email a short message and sign their names. Then I printed the emails & used a light box to trace their words onto white fabric. It wasn’t as good as if they did it themselves, but I could make sure it would fit in the fabric w/o crossing the 1/4” seam allowance.
      2. For locals, I also took a Manila file folder & cut out (on the ‘front’ middle) the size of the finished piece (2” x 4”). Then closed it, so folks only had that much space to write on the fabric.
      3. Folks could practice on note paper and when they had what they wanted, I had taped the prepped 2.5x4.5 white fabric on the ‘back inside.
      4. Prepped fabric with Terial fabric treatment so it was like paper & used Tulip brand fabric pens.
Note: I washed out the fabric treatment after it was bound but had to ‘touch up’ quite a few blocks. Tulip fabric pens could write on treated fabric and didn’t wash out.
      Good luck!

There are so many people that would be blessed to receive a quilt with messages on it.
