Thank you for your great tip! I never thought about turning the pin sideways, but that makes finding the spot to sew through so much easier. Happy quilting ❤❤❤
Great tip, however, my points get cut off on stitch n' flip. Example, for a cat's head, stitch n' flip a rectangle of background fabric with the 2 "ears" triangles on the corners. Nice pointy ears, but when time for the sashing, the points are gone. I can't figure out what I'm doing wrong!! Perhaps a tutorial on this. Thank you for all you teach.
Thanks! This looks terrific. Where I have the very most trouble is joining those stars block to block without sashing - point to point. Do you have a method for that? Thanks again!
If you haven't watched my free workshop on "How to Create The Perfect Quilt Block Every Time" one of the 5 5ips is how to create an accurate 1/4" seam allowance if you'd like to take a look. www.joyfulandmerryquilting.com
Thank you so much for all your tips that help us pay attention to detail. Instead of thinking I'll never get the hang of it I found with your tips and tricks I can get it right
Fabulosa vid as always. I'm not a pinner, as I'm a glue baster. I like to pivot a pin perpendicular to both points on my pinnable ironing surface. Once glued/set, it does not shift (but do clip because I'm clumsey and roll my chair over some piece of dragging quilt piece). Now, for pesky internal points (kaleido, LeMoyne) that you have to align when there is a confluence of stuff....using jeans thread (and appropriately sized needle) allows for a thread pivot (v. pin) that you can hold and guide through your machine. (Not saying it is any better than your method or pivoting pin method...just a method). Importantly, if you want to not lose your points, don't have scant 1/4" seams on points. A test block will always confirm your choices (yay or nay) so that your block finishes the right size with the right points. Keep your vids coming....
Thank you so much for the videos. I’m learning so much. I have a request. Please place the detailed part you are working on in the center of the screen. I need the closed captions and they are often right across what you are working on. I often watch the videos multiple times so I see what you are saying, then turn off closed captions and watch again. Thank you Mary! I love your channel!
Thanks so much for that request. It's difficult for me to see what I'm working on when I have the piece positioned too far away from me - and there are times when my head gets in the way when I'm leaning forward, trying to see...but I will definitely keep that in mind and try to make sure I have that bottom area of the screen open. Thank you again!
I love your video's except when it slides to the next frame? ( I'm not sure what to call it) it swooshes and it actually hurts my head/ears. LOL... stupid of me to ask but is there anyway for me to turn that noise off?
Thank you for your feedback and for watching my videos-I’m glad you’re enjoying them overall! The sound you’re hearing during the transitions is an intentional part of the video, and it’s something that most viewers seem to find works well with the flow of the content. I'm wondering if you have your volume turned up to a point that is causing the problem you're experiencing. If you need a high volume in order to hear my voice, it may cause a problem with loudness of the transitions. I haven’t received other comments about it, but I understand that everyone experiences sound differently. I hope it won’t be too distracting as you continue to enjoy my tutorials. There is no way to turn it off that I know of. My suggestion would be to turn down your volume. Thanks again for your support!
That means that you need to check your 1/4" guide on your sewing machine. If you haven't watched my free workshop - go to www.joyfulandmerryquilting.com and Click On WATCH FREE WORKSHOP - there are 5 videos and one is setting up your machine to sew an accurate seam. Let me know if you have any questions Bobbie!
I see your way of doing this and it seems easier. I've been doing it a smidge differently. I poke the pins through the points so the pin heads are underneath the block. Lay the sashing on top and poke the pins straight up through the sashing. I use those marking pins to keep the sashing in place - where the pin comes out is the "mark" and I sew just to the outside of the "mark" from the sashing side. I'll have to give your version a try. Thank you
Mark your point on both sides instead of just one side. Then, pin together through the marked dots on both sides. That way you know they're both lined up accurately and when you sew just below the marked dot on the top side, it will be in the right spot on the underside as well. Hope that helps.
That is the Ohio Star Block - it's part of our "Aim for the Stars" quilt course which will be available again, soon. If you're interested, you can add your email address to our mailing list at www.joyfulandmerryquilting.com and when the course begins again we will put that information in our Thursday newsletter.
Perfect! This is just what I need right now! Coincidentally, I’m about to begin an Ohio Star quilt for my Ohio State fan. I do find I like to press most seams open, just depends on the block and how it joins to the next.
I found when you sew through the tip, then you still have a bit of a flat end. With this, you allow for the fold over and still have a perfect point Thanks for watching!

Thanks! This looks terrific. Where I have the very most trouble is joining those stars block to block without sashing - point to point. Do you have a method for that? Thanks again!
Great idea…now I have to work on making the block so it has enough room for that 1/4 inch seam allowance!!

Love this Mary! So simple yet so important. Thankyou.
Thank you! So glad it was helpful!
My issue is not having any seam allowance so there is not way to sew the points correctly. That is so frustrating.
That means that you need to check your 1/4" guide on your sewing machine. Not much different than how I've been doing it but just enough that I'm sure it will make a big difference.
Thanks for watching!
Why have I never thought of doing that. I don't usually have issues with losing my points but this is a simple thing to assure perfect points!
Thanks for watching! It really works well for me!
Great tip for keeping your points. Easier than my method! Like the marking method and I will definitely be using it in the future!
You're so welcome! Thanks for watching and for commenting!
Excellent demo and explanation. I plan to follow these instructions. My points have never been consistent
Thank you! It takes a little extra time, but it works like a charm!
I see your way of doing this and it seems easier.

Disappointing is a good word for it! 🌺 thank you, very helpful. 🤗
You are so welcome! Thank you for watching!
Good tip, Mary! Any tips when you have two tips being sewn together so you don’t cut off the one underneath?
Mark your point on both sides instead of just one side. Then, pin together through the marked dots on both sides. That way you know they're both lined up accurately and when you sew just below the marked dot on the top side, it will be in the right spot on the underside as well. Hope that helps.
Thank you for showing us that little tip.
You're welcome!
Another great tip demonstrated clearly. Thanks!
Thank you!!! Glad you enjoyed it!

Pins! My first sewing teacher taught her students a great mantra:
"There's no such thing as too many pins". 😂😂😂😂😂😂
I couldn't agree more! Thanks for sharing!
Perfect! This is just what I need right now! Coincidentally, I’m about to begin an Ohio Star quilt for my Ohio State fan. I do find I like to press most seams open, just depends on the block and how it joins to the next.
This works for both ways of pressing! Enjoy and good luck!
Thank you, Mary! This technique is amazing in its simplicity. You have saved a million points and made many quilters happy.
And that makes me really happy! Thank you, Martha!
Fabulous tip! And, yes, the extra few seconds are certainly worth it!
I agree! Thanks for watching!
I have avoided a block of this type because i always seemed to cut off my points. Grat tip!
You'll never cut off another tip! It really works well! Thanks for watching!
Great idea Mary. I have heard to sew through the actual point but I often have to unpack and try to get just below. I am going to try this.
I found when you sew through the tip, then you still have a bit of a flat end. With this, you allow for the fold over and still have a perfect point Thanks for watching!
Terrific and simple idea! I will definitely try this on my next blocks with points.
I'm so glad it was helpful, Kim! Thanks for watching!
That is so much easier than how I’ve been doing it. Thank you!
