hey friends I just want to address something insensitive that i said in this video. a few of my Hindu viewers have kindly pointed out that Om is a very important word in India. I did know it was a real chant - in the video I was trying to succinctly give the vibe that Om the character, as a white guy who went to India once to meditate and then renamed himself Om, was an insensitive loser who repackaged actual cultures for his own gain (as he is portrayed in the book). But then I proceeded to provide absolutely 0 detail or nuance on this idea by characterizing Om as just a word that white women use to pretend to be monks. Which is partly true - the West "tries on" global culture all of the time without paying proper homage to communities or seeking to understand them. That was the stereotype I wanted to highlight to characterize this man, but what I actually said was very reductive and absolutely not the full picture of what Om is to actual Hindu people, and I am really really sorry for presenting it like it was or minimizing Hindu experiences with meditation or religion in any capacity. It was absolutely not my intention and I am sorry for biffing that description as much as I did 😭 I will be more careful in the future but I am not perfect so please let me know if I make a mistake like this again! I never want any of you guys to feel unsafe here and would SO MUCH rather you tell me if you ever do so I can try to correct it both in the moment & moving forward. thank you
