Change This On Your BMW Before Its Too Late! DIY Install

  • In this video I show you how to replace a very common and often forgotten coolant fitting on your N series BMW engine. This procedure would be similar on all N5X series 6 cylinder engines and N2X 4 cylinder gasoline engines.
This would most certainly leave you on the side of the road if it fails. The factory pieces is made out of plastic and the upgraded piece I install is made out of aluminum and will not fail in the future.
You can purchase the fitting here (affiliate):

As always TOP END content! You're my N54 DIY hero! I bought this from ECS recently as well. When I do my cooling system rebuild, which includes all the hoses and other fun parts, this is included! You always make the mechanicals look so easy (and the camera work too!). Thank you again for posting. #weltspeed

Thanks for this my N55 Guru! Started out with the oil service which led me to replacing both the oil filter housing and the cooler gasket. Once there i noticed how much oil had leaked over time and built up over this exact hose and connection. I wasn’t about to put all the pieces back on only to do it again two days later. Thankfully ECS Tuning shipped the billet replacement next day air so the X5 wasn’t down for long. Man once those 10mm bolts were off I began to loosen the hose and the plastic broke exactly like yours did. Used your ignition coils and spark plug video to close it all out. Thanks again!

Of course this would happen when I was away for work and my wife was driving my car. The plastic fitting sheared off while she was driving; coolant/steam everywhere, so she pulled over and shut off the car immediately. Fortunately no damage, but this prompted me to replaced every damn coolant hose in the car (~100,000 miles / 160,000 kms) just in case any more plastic fittings decided they'd break as well. Definitely worth it for the piece of mind.

Hence the reason for the dramatic title, hoping a lot of people see this and can change it before being stuck on the side of the road.

Probably most cars have used these plastic pieces for decades now. I had a 90’s VW Corrado VR6 which used a plastic coupling also. I changed mine to a metal after market coupler. I had an BMW 325is, I think 2000 Model. Changed out the water pump with the plastic impeller to a metal one. That is a must change on probably all cars I would think today. When the plastic fins break off the water pump with age, they go into the engine. A costly problem fishing those pieces out of the motor.

I recently did an entire radiator and coolant hose refresh on my N52 with 172K. I used the aluminum flanged FCP hose for this problem area. The flange is already band clamped to the hose. It’s a quality part compared to stock.
After removing every hose, some had some more life in them, and some did not. The driver side top radiator hose plastic was in bad shape. Also the o-ring on the metal pipe going into the lower block was flat and not pliable. Just a matter of time before that failed, as well.
Replacing every hose is not easy on these motors. But neither is being stranded on the side of the road. I refreshed everything for peace of mind. If you have a high mileage car and intend to keep it, I’d recommend spending the $450ish in parts and refresh the whole system while you have it drained and apart.

You definitely want to tackle this before it starts coming apart, I’ve found bits in the water pump from a fitting that looked just like this one when removed. Also check the coolant cap as it also seems to turn from black to brown and starts coming apart. And while I haven’t seen the upper Rad house fail, it starts to discolor as well so that would be a good swap out on a high mileage engine. This is the hottest part of the circuit and these parts definitely do not hold up nearly as well as the rest of the system due to it. I would think 100k is a about the absolute most you would want to leave these if you don’t want them to start shedding pieces. N55 has the same set up too. Great vid!

While changing it, I had to remove the water connector and quickly found out this is broken. A quick search on the community and learn that this is a common failure and also found the cheapest replacement part is made of CNC aluminium from Ebay.

REIN makes a similar aluminum part (FCP Euro). The spring clamp is more of the cheap type...so get a worm gear hose clamp. Coolant flange issue also effects F30 N55 engines. Look for hose damage on the end.
Getting the old clamp off it a pain, since it needs to be cut off. You might literally need the jaws of life. The best option is to crush the plastic crusty coolant flange. (Hammer/Mallet or Channel Locks or Vise Grips). You might need to Dremel the plastic from the inside out (ID), not the metal clamp in (OD). Give it to a 7 year old. They know how to break stuff quick.

My friend has an '05 545i, almost the whole cooling hose assembly (it's a separate assembly of 3 interconnected hoses) failed within 3 days of itself. The plastic connection from 2 ends failed with somehow the last connection still in good condition, but it ended up with a loss of about 5 gallons of coolant and like 3 gallons of distilled water. This was on the n62 v8, and I think I'm going to be the angry owner of an n54 later this week with more separate cooling hoses. Wish me luck!

Hi do I have to remove the fan on my 2011 n55 e92 335i to get to the two bolts on the flange or can I reach them with leaving the fan connected ?

Interesting how yours is black, the one I ordered from FCP Euro and installed on my n54 was just the brushed finish. Also I believe it is very unnecessary to remove the fan since I did mine with ease with it in.

Dude this piece is a must replace. It broke in my N52 and I had in mind at the time to replace it preventively. It’s worth every penny to replace before hand because if it breaks you’re stranded, there’s no way you can get that hose back in place and a tow truck will cost more than 10 times what this piece is worth!! Wild that bmw cheaped out on a piece the aftermarket can produce to sell for 15 bucks they could have made it themselves for way cheaper and put a metal one there..

@Laurence Cursaro gm has a piece that joins all the hoses in the cooling system and the thermostat which is made out of plastic for their 4 cylinder engines and it’s a lot worse than this

@Laurence Cursaro that’s why my 2006 325i is currently at 254k miles and has only needed regular servicing aswell as stuff that all cars will need as they age; hoses gaskets etc.

Yeah it's such a simple thing that could really leave you stranded. Hence I don't feel bad about using such a dramatic title, trying to get as many people to proactively replace this as possible.

Schwaben makes a coolant evacuation tool which is very usefull when pressurizing and filling up the system correctly. It found a leak where I didnt install the oring correctly on the coolant fitting. Around 100k I replaced alot of the coolant hoses, radiator even cracked and leaked. Rein makes an aluminum fitting with hose instead of the plastic. Love my 07 328i but being proactive i probably dropped 3k so I can make it to 200,000.
