      what is the best place to start your own kingdom timby ?

    • @Timby
      @Timby  7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      it really depends as every game is different, however I generally find attacking a Sarranid castle is usually the easiest. But it's apples and apples because it depends on what units you currently have and what you want to go for in the long run. But in general I take a Sarranid castle, but may take whatever I can find that is easy to take. When starting a kingdom just try to find an easily defendable location, both on the campaign map and in the battle screen as when you first start many factions will almost undoubtedly declare war on you.

    A bit of trading advice:
    1) Alt + LMB is useful to quickly sell a lot of loot/goods in one clicks instead of clicking and dragging.
    Another useful trading tip - you can sell merchandise to all vendors (arms, horse, armor) for the same price, there is no price penalty.
    2) If you happen to have more loot/goods than all money the vendors have, just wait 1 day and they all get around +500-1000 denars. Don't need to ride to another town.
    3) If you see a huge amount of 1 particular product in the shop (for example, loads of iron) - always buy it first and then press the option to access the market to find out where to sell it. If you do the other way around, chances are all arriving caravans and villagers will buy out all this stock while you were waiting and the price will be high again and few products will remain.
    4) Have 1-2 sumpter horses in your inventory if you are moving loads of goods around. It will spread the weigh and you'll be able to move on a world map faster instead of crawling like a turtle overloaded with merchandise. It doesn't affect your speed if you don't have goods in your inventory though.
    5) When you access the local market only pay attention to the potential income starting from 80 denars/item and higher or so.
    Lower than that is not even worth your troubles. Buying a bunch of high cost items with low equity could lead to zero income or even a loss.
    6) If you can't sell everything at once, sell all the goods first and items last. Items don't hinder your world map speed, and goods do!
    7) It's a good idea to ride solo in the beginning and moving goods from town to town saving your wealth for the future, avoiding the tough fights. That way you will fly like a wind, you won't have to worry about the hunger or wages or army losses.
    Actually I was so carried away playing solo, I found myself fighting 40 forest bandits all alone and feeling confident.

      Ride a horse. The AI sucks at leading targets, so if you ride in large circles around the bandits, they rarely score a hit on you. They'll eventually run out, leaving you to pick them off.
      Plus their bows usually suck, so higher tier armor shrugs off their damage entirely.

    • @Sirisma
      @Sirisma 7 ปีที่แล้ว +20

      4) It's actually capped at 6 horses. Having mostly mounted units increases your overland speed as well.

    • @wiktorpolit8170
      @wiktorpolit8170 7 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      Very nice advices but i don`t agree with potential income starting from 80 dennars especially at the beggining of the game where it is a good idea to start trading with ... grain which can be bought very cheap at Swadia (villages near Dhirim wants sth like 10 denars) and can be sold at price of 30 - 40 dennars which gives you income of x3-4.
      And I would add tip that it is nice to give companions points in training because they do stack.
      And if sieging cities/castles think about brining mainly archer/footmen force, prepare 2 row`s first footmen to make shield-wall and second with archers it can sometimes win battle even without fighting for wall.

    One piece of invaluable advice is to ensure that during times of peace you gain do quests for villages. Having a high affinity with a village makes recruiting troops much easier. When having 20+ affinity there are changes you can get 10-20 troops looking to join at a single time.

    Another 2 things I missed during my first 100 hours:
    1) Clicking Ctrl (or Shift) + LMB will assign an item from either left or right to the other side in the Trade interface. (Not too sure its ctrl or shift but it definitely works)
    2) You can issue commands like 'Hold this position' from afar by holding F1 button. I used to personally travel to such location and issue the command -_-

    Something I just found after thousands of hours in this game: you can use shift + numbers to give orders to multiple groups in combat. So you can e.g. tell only your infantry and archers to advance while keeping the cavalry following you, or order infantry and cavalry to charge while archers hold position, without having to issue orders to each group individually

    Tip for sieges: Do not charge in in the beginning. Position your infantry in a line outside the castle and archers right behind them and snipe all the crossbowmen/archers. Then charge infantry first and have archers follow you to a good vantage point while your infantry does the heavy fighting.

    Rhodoks specialise in spearmen, glaivemen and heavy crossbowmen.
    Nords specialise in strong infantry with high damage short weapons.
    Swadians specialise mostly in knights, but also have a good infantry.
    Vaegirs have quick archers and strong infantry. Also mediocore cavalry.

  • @poryg5350
    @poryg5350 5 ปีที่แล้ว +17

    My tips:
    If you can't defeat deserters, pay them! They only want a portion of the money you have. If you hhve little, they'll request even less.
    Don't use companions as your main combat medics. Use yourself and have a backup medic at most. Companions stop being wounded at 2x as much HP as you do and whoever is wounded, deactivates his party skills till they have enough hp to become unwounded. So not only companions are more prone to getting wounded, they're wounded for longer too. Also, from some level onwards you receive bonuses to company stats that you have the highest. At 4 it's +1, 6 +2, 8 +3 and 10 +4. Very useful for the most important party skills. In fact, wound treatment, first aid and path-finding should be your three party skills.
    I don't recommend you to spend points on surgery though. It may sound nice that your soldiers get wounded instead of dying, but too high surgery means you're going to have a lot of wounded soldiers. The problem with wounded soldiers is, they take a long time before they're usable again. Until then they waste a slot in your army. Nobody is going to be afraid of an army of 160, of which only 30 are combat capable. Not to mention, they'll still slow you down and eat your food just as if they were well. So it's much better for them to die. Nobody is going to be afraid of an army of 30 either, but this army of 30 can at least have more speed to run away from enemy campaign.
    Tactics are terrible for the player. Even with 10 tactics you're going to suffer ridiculous casualties if you order your troops to attack without you.
    Get a long weapon asap. Preferably lance. Even a bad lance is better than an one-handed sword.
    Don't start as Rhodoks. They're the most difficult nation to play offensively. You need to master combat in various terrains and especially difficult terrain before you can use Rhodoks well. Don't start as Khergits or Sarranids either - the bandits have horses and even a lance. With flat terrain that's a bad combination. Swadians are a good choice, although Vaegirs are the easiest starter nation:
    1. They have Rivacheg. Dyeworks in Rivacheg produce 1000 denars a week, profits no other enterprise can match. 10 grand aren't the easiest to gather, but once you buy the dyeworks, it makes money management much easier.
    2. Their troops are easy to train. With training skill 5 you can promote all vaegir recruits after midnight. This makes training vaegir knights so easy they're pretty much disposable, although disposing of them is harder than it looks as they're quite strong too. The only other race that has this are Khergits and khergit lancers are so easy to train it's ridiculous. Swadia has powerful knights, but not only they are rather expensive, they're also difficult to train.
    3. They have easy access to sea raiders, the best bandits for training units and for farming cash (as well as the most accessible way of getting a decent beginning armor). They take some practice and favorable terrain to defeat, but in flat terrain and with a lance they soon become a joke. Just make sure to keep your distance in youe initial combats with them, they have bows and throwing arrows. Keep your distance and circle around them to make them deplete their ammo.
    Do not underestimate board shields and shields on back. My first successful run's inventory consisted of morningstar, great lance, board shield and huscarl shield. You can't use board shield from horseback, but it will still keep you safe from archery fire into your back. And if you have it above your smaller shield, the board shield gets picked when on foot, the small shield gets picked on horseback. No need to switch the shields in combat.
    Troops get chosen into battle from top to bottom. If you need to train or get rid of troops (Hello, sword sisters in army of Nords), put them at the top. If you need to conserve a companion's health, put them to the bottom.
    Leadership helps a lot with morale, I recommend getting it to 3 asap.
    Have a couple of villages that are happy with you. The happier they are, the better troops you can recruit.
    Do NOT become a marshal! Marshal gains controversy everytime the kingdom loses. If you reach enough controversy, nobody is going to grant you a fief even if you have enough renown. Also, you're going to have to defend every castle you conquer, because nobody is going to do that... and the enemy will gladly lay siege to it. It's much better to pick a vassal or two and conquer a castle together. You'll still have to defend it, but you won't gain any controversy if you lose it. Or if your villages get looted, because nobody is defending your homelands (which happens quite easily, when everyone is your friend due to you having 90 honor).

    I think most of these are true for Native.
    If you do quests for villages, especially the "Train peasants" one, they will provide better soldiers when recruiting volunteers. This is very useful later on, if your army gets destroyed - you can recruit decent units to start off again, instead of going through peasants.
    If you ever want to play multiplayer, set the blocking settings to "Mouse movement". Nearly all multiplayer servers for all mods use this kind of blocking, referred to as "manual blocking." Plus, it's far more satisfying.
    Arguably, the three most important kinds of companions you need in Native (the base game) are the medic (to prevent high unit losses in battles), the trainer (to train units faster in order to avoid leading peasants and militias in the first battles), and the engineer (to make sieges much faster, because they often take too long otherwise). These are respectively Jeremus, Firentis and Artimenner.
    Mercenaries recruitable from taverns may seem to be a very good investment at first, due to the fact that they instantly come with decent equipment and training. However, don't be fooled. They are far more expensive to maintain than regular units of the same level and often perform worse than comparable faction units.

    • @Starman062
      @Starman062 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Only major problem here is Jeremiah and artimenner hate each other, so it may be wise to recruit a different companion and train them up to be a engineer.

      @@joshuawakeley217 It really is, Josh. It's a medieval French word brought over to England by the Normans after 1066 a.d. 'To pay a fee' is an abbreviation in modern usage, and we don't say to pay a fye, or fie, do we? Fife is a county in Scotland, also called Fifeshire, pronounced Fifesher.
      I think us Brits have half a clue about how to say our own words. Just like Leicester is 'Lester' and Worcester is 'Wooster'. The problem is that the US uses phonetic spelling, which is why they always fuck up Shakespeare and old English so badly in general, they pronounce words as they're spelled, not said. It's only a matter of time until the US spells 'mother tongue' 'mutha tung'.

    I notice this recently. When you fight long battles or with a lot of units on the party interface. what units order you place them in will spawn from top to bottom. For example: if you have archers and warriors in the first 2 slots and cavalry in the 3rd one but you have to many warriors there will be no calvary and they will end up being the reinforcemnts.

    7:15 This is wrong. Skills in M&B are the highest in the party + your own skill. So if Jeremus has 8 trainer, and you have 1, your party gets 9 effectively.
    Edit: Only trainer stacks at 100% the rate. I did not realize this and thought everything stacked perfectly, like trainer. Taking party skills on YOUR character (but not on other characters) gives the following bonuses at these levels:
    1 : +0
    2-4: +1

      @@maplesyrup8070 You are correct that I am wrong but it's not 1/2 either. I made a mistake because I was basing this on my experience with Trainer. Trainer as it turns out stacks at 100% the value, but - for some reason - it's the only skill to do so.
      The actual rates for (most) party stacking bonus are worse than 1/2 and are quite arbitrary:
      1 : +0
      2-4: +1
      5-7: +2
      8-9: +3
      10: +4

    Best video out here to get started. Only thing I would add is I always start at khergit or sarranid because having horse units is really helpful early in the game. A small party of sarranid mamlukes will be fast and effective for either hunting bandits or trade around the map, pile up cash and then buy enterprises to make money before becoming vassal. Horse units and a good pathfinding level and you will be able to hunt any desert bandit or steppe bandit even with a party of 30-40. Also keep a couple horses 3-6 in your inventory, it will prevent from slowing you down when inventory is full

    So many people pronounce Swadia as "Swaddia" but it sounds so much better when you pronounce it as "Swedia". Am I right fellows? :)
    As for further tips;
    this is the strategic way I ALWAYS use.
    At the gender option:
    - Male or Female does not matter, however it would be funnier as a female.
    Choosing your background:
    First of all, choose wisely for most intelligence.
    My selects:
    Father was a merchant
    Early years as assistant
    Adult hood as a student
    Reason for adventure;
    Either forced out, or for money.
    Now you are set for the character skill selection.
    this is simple, you put every attribute point to intelligence, if you have reached a upgrade number for example 6, 9, 12. and you have one left, it'll be wise to put it on charisma.
    then with the skill points you upgrade atleast;
    Tactics to the max of your intelligence.
    Surgery to the max of your intelligence.
    Wound treatment to the max of your intelligence.
    Training perhaps, as it upgrades your troops faster.
    Looting is optionable, as well as pathfinding. this surely would be useful in gaining money faster, or running from the enemy.
    Now this is what you have to do;
    You build up a small army, train them as much as you can. Once you put them to battle, you'll notice, they would fight fairly good at just the starting gameplay of the game. try to upgrade tactics and surgery as much as you can throughout the whole game and you are usually bound to win.
    Penalties;
    Lack of strength.
    Gaining less renown throughout battles.
    Hope this helps some of you out, but I would certainly try this out if I were you ! :)

      It is alright, my friend. I am respecting every way of pronouncing. especially when Swadia has actually no right way to pronounce, its not like a word or something. :P but everytime someone pronounces it as Swaddia then, its hard to explain why, but a cringy feeling gets into my head. :P

    These were all pretty basic tips. The most advanced ones I have in my own repertoire:
    - Trainer and Surgery are the best abilities in the whole game. I always strife for high intelligence after having enough strength and riding skill to wield whatever items I wish.
    - Surgery makes your army pretty much unkillable IF you survive the battle. Comboing it with a high wound treatment from a companion means that even if you lost all but 20 men in your 300 men army, you'll likely still have almost 300 veterans back in a day with no additional cost at all!
    Trainer skill on the other side stacks since every companion gives the xp individually to all characters and troops that have a lower level.
    It allows you to have top tier level units without having to grind battles and lose troops. Similar to enterprises time alone makes your army better here!
    Level your companions first until they're decent fighters since trainer only affects troops that have a lower level than the person training them. Then max them out in intelligence and you can raise whole armies of elite warriors in days which is especially good when you're a king!
    Since experience is distributed amongst all troops of one type, wait until upgrading to the last tier until all soldiers are ready to do so, this way everybody still gains xp:
    If you e.g. have 100 nord veterans you want to raise to nord huscarls, train until all 100 are ready to upgrade. Not only is this cheaper, it's also multiple times quicker than upgrading them individually since at the end still all 100 veterans will gain exp per level and trainer for their whole stack.
    Note though that troops experience is reset if they get garissoned, so if you give a town a bunch of units that are ready to upgrade it's a waste since they'll all become unupgradeable.
