Kyocera Samurai: Is This Vintage Half Frame Camera Worth It?
มุมมอง 6Kปีที่แล้ว
Many beloved legendary cameras were born in the 80s. The Canon AE-1, Nikon F3, Leica R5 (well maybe not so much), and Yashica T3 were all released or saw their popularity soar in the decade. None of them are quite as odd as the Kyocera Samurai, a half frame camera that takes more inspiration from a a handy cams design than a regular 35mm slr. It took a some canvassing of Tokyos used camera stor...
Minolta TC-1: The Almost Perfect Point and Shoot Film Camera
มุมมอง 10Kปีที่แล้ว
In this video, I dive deep into the remarkable Minolta TC-1, a compact film camera that has rekindled my passion for film photography. I explore its unique features, exceptional image quality, and sleek design, making it a fantastic daily carry option that competes with the likes of the Contax T2, Nikon 28ti, and Fujifilm Tiara lines of cameras. I also show Minolta TC-1 street photography from ...
Canon AE-1: The Timeless Classic That Revolutionized Photography
มุมมอง 278ปีที่แล้ว
Alas, my video review of one of the most famous film cameras of all time! The Canon AE-1 and FD50mm f/1.4 were a real pleasure to carry with me for the past few weeks. I actually ran into several strangers on the streets who told me that they also have AE-1s and about how much they love them. I have a lot to say about this camera, although I don't cover everything (I mean, I could have covered ...
Twilight by Gregory Crewdson | PHOTOBOOKS
มุมมอง 1.4K2 ปีที่แล้ว
This is a video about Gregory Crewdson's photography, specifically his book titled Twilight. Twilight made a powerful impression on me and I knew that I had to make a video to elaborate on my feelings about it. The photos Crewdson creates are absolutely gorgeous and imbued with a ~cinematic~ melancholy that you don't often see in pure stills photography. In fact, how he has the money to do any ...

Street Photography on a South Korean Island
มุมมอง 5063 ปีที่แล้ว
So, in this video I document my trip to Namiseom, an Island to the east of Seoul by the small city of Gapyeong. I inadvertently also ended up going to Jara Island, and doing a night-time photowalk around the city. I brought along my Leica M6 classic, Summicron 35mm, Zeiss Biogon 28mm f/2.8, Summicron 50 (frankly I only used the 35mm) as well as the Lomography Action Sampler, which is a neat lit...

The Cheapest Way to Improve any Zeiss ZM Lens | 7artisans Focus Tab
มุมมอง 6K3 ปีที่แล้ว
What's up guys! In this video I attach (and hopefully show you how to) attach a 7artisans focus tab to your Zeiss ZM lens. I've had this lens for a a pretty long time and I was genuinely surprised by how much this improved my experience with it! This a a product made by 7artisans for lenses like their 28mm f/1.4 etc, but I found that with slight modification it should work great on most lenses....
Zeiss Distagon 35mm F/1.4 Review | The Contrast King
มุมมอง 22K3 ปีที่แล้ว
In this video, I do a quick overview and review of the absolutely lovely Zeiss 35mm F/1.4 Distagon *deep breath* wow that's a lot. This was my first lens for my Leica and honestly I've probably taken most of my favorite photos with it. I'm thrilled to have the Leica 35mm Summicron now as well to accompany it, but before I make a video with some photos from that we gotta pay respects to the OG. ...
Unboxing my Leica dream lens, again (Summicron 35 ASPH.)
มุมมอง 13K3 ปีที่แล้ว
This is my unboxing of the Leica Summicron 35mm ASPH. I've been really excited to get my hands on a modern Leica lens and I decided to make this one my first. I think the size and focus tab will make this an excellent partner to my Zeiss Distagon 35mm 1.4, which I think may be the best 35mm lens for shallow depth portraits on Leica M. Let me know what you think in the comments and make sure to ...
Leica 50mm Summicron Dual Range Review | User Experience

This is my review of the Leica Summicron 50mm Dr / Dual Range. I bought this lens just before the current world event so I've had it for a while and I've compiled some shots and thoughts about it for you in this video. It's a really great lens, so I hope you enjoy the review! My price estimate is a touch high but it's just to temper your expectations. Make sure to like and subscribe if you enjo...
The Western Road Trip

I went on a three week roadtrip from Jackson, Mississippi to Seattle, Washington and back with my friend Fisher. This is my record of the trip but I hope you enjoy it! I also took along my Leica M6 and took some photos while were out. You'll see some shots from it while I was using Cinestill 800. The next video will most likely be a lens review, then a maybe another PHOTOBOOKS video.

Leica M6 Photography: Process and Results
The Summicron 50mm Rigid is the only lens I use now for my Leica MD 262. It replaced the Zeiss 50mm f/2 Planar. The Zeiss was too sharp in contrast to the Rigid which made a more filmic rendering...!
joined a rolleiflex group on facebook, but i haven't post up photos of me flaunting my "rolleiflex" in there but i do own an autocord, photos are so good, those people actually believed those were taken by a planar 😂.
The focuser flaw is only evident because of time. The gears and lever were cast from Zamack, a zinc alloy that was commonly used in post WW2 industry (rebuilding a nation is costly). It is quite strong when new, but embrittles with age. One cannot fault the decision to use it when the alternative was to not have an affordable product.
This is one of the most underrated products on the planet! Oh yeah, and it’s photographic equipment:) Jokes aside, this lens is truly the perfect tool for any hard core 35mm fast aperture M-shooter. It’s by far the best one I’ve ever used (others include Lux, Voigt, Typoch). This lens is a champion.
“Mind boggingly” 🤣
It's funny to see that camera manufacturers, Japanese people, and most users also read it as Nikon, but only a few arrogant English and American users read it as Naicon. Respec.
The accent is killing me
what's your watch ?
Yes …Thank you. I have a 50 Cron and it’s hard to focus without a tab, and now I’m hoping this will fix it. Kinda want to try this on the 90 apo cron also. I wish all Leica lens had tabs! Im so happy I found this video, thanks!
OK that was the most intensely synthy trying to be 80s intro I've ever heard. Wow.
Excellent review, i love the freedom in his photography
I shoot full frame mirror-less digital. (Sigma fpL) My motivation for upgrading to full frame was so that that I could adapt vintage lenses and they would perform optically similar to how they did on film. (corner to corner rather then cropped down). I am very intrigued with the Dual Range feature, other than pixel peeping, are there any other issues with using this o a digital camera? Will the dual range feature work on an M mount adapter? Obviously I will not need the view finder adapter. Great video btw. Def subscribing.
Watching this because I found one in a local antique store like you mentioned lol. Appears to work, can't wait to see the images! Definitely enjoy not looking like a pro, used to lug around a Nikon F5, almost got beat up once for taking a picture of some guys car😂
a bit confused, does a DR lens focuses correctly on an M6? Non TTl and a TTl?
The DR lens has two focus ranges, macro and standard. The standard range will work on both M6 models, but the close focus range will not work on the M6 TTL
I found an Autocord that had been CLA'd as well as having the mirror replaced. I own a Rolleicord, Yashica Mat and a couple of other Russian made cameras. Do you know how this camera performs against the Rolliecord or Yashica Mat? I found that. both of these two cameras perform in a comparable manner.
My understanding is that the tlrs from reputable brands (rollei, yashica, Minolta) all have similar-ish, very good image quality barring differences in aperture, and that the main differences are in how you use them.
Have you been able to get the light leak fixed? It seems like a common problem on TC-1.
It hasn’t bothered me enough to get it fixed honestly. But I don’t think it would be that complicated of an issue to resolve
Thank you for this!!
Just had a look at your list of videos and I’m even more excited at looking through the various ones you’ve done, looks like your tackling it from viewing some great photographers DG
I was very interested in your video and also the reference to the book, I would perhaps do a run through or have your script so to speak on a laptop or iPad, I kicked the little references to Grandad and also your honesty, I have a few Folding cameras and lots of SLRs of many brands and ages, right up to and including the mirrorless Fuji’s and Olympus, but I have just purchased a Voigtlander Superb and Montanus Delmonta but also have my sights set on an Minolta as I am a big fan of their lenses and some SLRs. At 72 you’d think I’d stop but I love them and found out about ten years ago that my Grandfather had a photographic studios in there late 1800 early 1900 so I think it’s in the genes. You will get so much pleasure in the years ahead and I still have a picture of my Grand mother that I took with a box Browni in the 50s she used to come and see us every Sunday until she was 89 and then had an accident but made it to 99 born in 1983, I have subscribed and look forward to watching your, excuse Pun developing talents. Great stuff. DG
The four dots are for gripping with your thumb!
Does the film roll rewinds automatically? I just got mine and the film is not going back to the canister.
Yes, the film should rewind automatically! There may be something wrong with your copy :(
Weird way you pronounce some of those “L’s”.
yeah it killed the video for me, and i'm not even native
Minolta made the first workable auto focus cameras in the 80s then in the 90s they made the cle view finder with lieca wich was the best m mount camera until the lieca m7 came out 10 yrs later. best point and shoot and the best 35mm pro camera in the alpha 9. Then they sold there camera devision to sony and sony ran with it. There's a reason minolta heads love there minoltas so much❤
I have the Pen EE and the Samurai I love the fact that the Samurai takes landscape photos in its upright position 🙂 I love this camera!
Was there any manual version or similar style camera in manual, searching for a video on this camera I saw some similar yashicas, maybe they have one?
In my research, there was no manual samurai as far as I could tell. However, there were some digital samurais which I tried to track down to purchase myself, with no luck unfortunately. The Olympus pen's are also half frame and (I think) are manual but they aren't the same aesthetically as the Samurai. Thanks for watching!
@@DrewWaddell ah thats a shame, still I am looking for a point and shoot for a friend so maybe I can pick one up for him! It would be a great prop for portraits 😂🤣
I'm sold, I've ordered one from ebay. One question, you mention this is an SLR, can you actually see in the viewfinder that you have acquired focus? I know the half-press will light up an LED that the camera has locked on to something, but can you actually see that you have focused on a person rather than the background?
Hi! I think you just kind of have to judge by looking through the viewfinder. It is a proper SLR and not a rangefinder so if it is focused in the viewfinder, the final image should be focused properly as well
@@DrewWaddell just got my first 2 rolls from the lab, some absolute banger photos! Great recommendation, thank you.
Awesome video. Thank you!
great video Drew, in the process of finding a copy myself. In some of my reading I found that the "angular glaring" you mentioned toward the end of the video is actually a light leak that is kind of tricky but can be repaired by a skilled tech, if you wanted.
holy shit drew good to see you doing well man. miss you a lot this is jake from a long time ago.
Hey what film did you use for these shots? They look awesome! Ordered a Samurai X2 recently and looking to have some great photos like yours.
I used Cinestill 800 and Fuji Superia 400! If you see any glowing around bright lights, then its Cinestill. Glad to here you picked one up, enjoy :)
It costs on ebay 1000 usd. Better take a film SLR with decent 28 mm lens for a fraction of cost. E.g. Nikon F80 + Nikkor 28mm 1: 2.8 will do better for a ridiculous cost. Add here built-in multizone balanced fill flash, motorized film transport, better exposure metering, 5-point autofocus etc.
Fair point! I think its important to consider the different use cases though. A Nikon F80 may have certain advantages over the Minolta TC-1, but it is also won't fit in my pocket. The Minolta TC-1 is also undoubtedly expensive, but if it was all about practicality, nobody would shoot film. I'll have to check out the F80 sometimes, seems like a cool camera. Thanks for watching!
Very smart looking camera 📷 Lots of thought have gone into the design. Images it produces are stunning. I've added your channel, hopefully you'll connect with a retro film photographer? Edit- my daily carry canera is my Olympus pen ee half frame camera, to me it's just a work of art, a design icon, it's small and easy to carry around and ultra simple to use.
Thanks for watching! I looked into the Olympus pen cameras for my video on the Kyocera Samurai. They've got that stellar art-deco kind of look to them, super cool cameras
What strap were u using on the camera? I like how thin it is!
It's an old Pentax wrist strap. The shop I bought it at in Vietnam threw it in for free lol
The whole half frame thing started up in the 1960s, about the time I got into photography seriously. I never got involved at the time. Years later, I thought to get one and started looking to the Samuri. Several different models were made over the years, the main differences being the zoom range and aperture of the lens. I was about to acquire one when I realized that its exposure process is fully automatic with no practical user adjustments. For me, that killed the deal right there. Considering that most people shooting film today are scanning their negatives and posting digital positive images on social media of some sort, I'm surprised that there has been no craze for half frame, as those end-uses would look as good from the half as from full frame.
If you can smell craft IPA through your computer screen had me crying. Also this is true af! As always, great video! Glad you're pushing out more work more recently :)
Very well done, this is from someone who has been doing photography (film) for 65+ years. With regard to 135 (35mm) film lengths, 36, 27, 24 and 12 frame films are mostly what I have seen. Colour negative film developing is actually easier than Black and White (B&W) film developing. With B&W you have differing developing times that are dependent upon the speed of the film and the type of developer. Whereas with colour negative in the C41 process, not only are the steps easy, the whole development process is standardised and never changes no matter what type, film speed or manufacturer. I would suggest that finding a 50mm f/1.4 lens, is reasonably harder to find than a slower 50mm f/1.8 or slightly slower again f2 lens. Optically at f/4 or f/5.6 most of these lenses, including the f/1.4 will be very close. I do have one f/1.4 lens, but my 50mm f1.8 which was far cheaper is so close in most aspects, it doesn't matter. I was impressed by your mobile phone negative film image to positive in-phone image, section. I hadn't thought of doing that. But then again I'm from the generation that mainly uses a mobile phone for talking.
This camera achieves a spiritual unity between form and function. Out of all my cameras this is the one I enjoy using the most.
I shoot the Olympus pen ft with both the 35 and 25mm lenses. but i do like the samurai with the landscape format
Solid review, however wtf am i doing watching M6 review conditional on my budget 😂
Cool video! I really enjoyed it.
Just when I thought I've seen all the 1/2 frame cameras, you come out with this video. Nice job on the video. It was really well done. Keep up the great work! Also, GO BLUE (saw your Michigan t-shirt)!!
Thanks for watching! :))
another great video king😊

@@DrewWaddell yup👌
Great video, great editing! My edc camera is a Olympus XA.
That's the one with the detachable flash that you stick on to the side, right? Such a cool camera. I also love the way its bulbous lens cover opens. Thanks for the kind words!
Genuinely impressive editing and production quality!
Minolta HImatic AF 38 is my EC
The Himatic AF has such a unique retro aesthetic. It kind looks like a cross of the Leica M5 and Canon AE-1. How’s the 38mm lens on it? I really enjoyed trying my friends 40mm Ricoh gr but I wasn’t sure if it would be wide enough to use every day. Thanks for watching!
@@DrewWaddell I love the 38 as it is like a combo of a 35 and a 40. Great channel man!
Hi Drew i’ve seen couple of videos and really enjoyed hearing your take on stuff. Especially the 28mm focal length opinion. Are you still using the 35mm summicron? Hows it been so far ?
Yes, the 35mm sum micron is still my go-to lens for my Leica camera. It basically lives on my m6. It’s the perfect balance of weight and image quality. Sharp as a tack but won’t hurt your neck, just your wallet (lol). Feels amazing to use as well. Thanks for watching!
This was fun, Drew! Great job with the storytelling here!
Dude is so fucking back!!!
Better than 35mm asph summilux . Better colour , non focus shift ( summilux asph has focus shift ) . Sold my summilux and get this lens never regretted.
