    Hey Taylor! I watch this build series probably once a week. I have a 70 Elk myself with a 468 BBC and have been working on it for a few months now. Swapped the 4 speed for a 5 speed Tremec TKX, put a McLeod RXT in it, had the 12 bolt pro built with 410 gears, and just got some AFR 265 heads to start rebuilding the top end of the motor. I currently run 990 heads with an LS6 intake and a fairly mild COMP CAM. The AFR's should give me a huge jump in power everywhere. Putting an Air gap intake on it as well. I have an 800 but am thinking about a 950 quickfuel to throw on it. Anyway, thanks for the inspiration. Guys like you who take the time to film their build push me and inspire me to do work myself I wouldn't have thought I could do on my own. All the work stated above I did on my own, and I am just a high school grad with zero experience. You are an inspiration to the young weekend wrench armatures like myself. Educating the masses! lol you rock and this car rocks too.

    Nice video. With a hydraulic roller cam in a big block, if you used standard hydraulic roller lifters and the springs that came with the kit, you'll hit a wall power wise around 5700-5800 rpm. If you want to pull power to 6500 you need the race style limited travel lifters and much stiffer valve springs. Running a solid lifter in my big block, with 210lbs on the seat and 520lbs over the nose, it would float the valves at 6200rpm. I now run 260lbs on the seat and 600lbs over the nose and added titanium retainers to rev it to 7000rpm.

      I run a girdle for cheap insurance on a big block chevy because of the angles the rockers set and having longer studs for roller rockers increases stress on stud . i would rather spend 250 to 300 dollars for piece of mind. All bbc have screw in studs . i have seen rocker studs walk out of a head as well as pressed in studs on sbc . all depends on surrounding parts and how they were installed . kind of a personal preference state of mind thing. I have girdles so i use them.

    Nice El Camino, I always liked those...especially the '68 and '69, those were dirt cheap when I was in high school early eighties. That engine should be around 575 horse, single plane manifold would get you closer to 600.

    • @x-man5056

      Holly Torquer. Had one in my jet boat in early 80's. 6,500RPM all day long, no roller rockers, no roller cam, no stud girdle, but that is a problem area. 20 foot jet boat, pull up 7 slalom skiers without noticing. Torquer is a single plane high rise but should fit under the hood. Edelbrook and Weiand have a version too, like this: www.summitracing.com/parts/wnd-7530wnd?seid=srese1&gclid=CjwKCAjw29vsBRAuEiwA9s-0B7nSI_CPNEgN6GOCLUvpIA033x_Ppc39kxSOTFFuyky01WnOVkpjlRoCjjgQAvD_BwE
      Good for about 2000-7000RPM. Coincidentally I towed the jet boat with a 70 El Camino, loved that car, it was a small block though. Fun Times.

      @@x-man5056 I almost bought a gm before my fox zephyr but you know what's a crazy dual plane?
      A weiand dual plane for big block rectangle ports. MF has ports that match a 300+ cc square port lol people talk about in forums. That will definitely get 6500 at 10.5:1

    • @x-man5056
      @x-man5056 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@KingJT80 I had the square port heads on my boat. I heard a lot of back and forth about which style flowed better but at the time I had all the go fast I could keep gas in. I'd used about 18 gallons on an average day of skiing and fun runs.
      I could put my fingers in the intake ports diagonally to the second knuckle. The lighter weight of the aluminum heads would have been nice in the boat but if I was going to add horsepower, I would have just bumped the cam up. Which brings us right back to the gas issue.
      It could have used roller rockers and a stud girdle though. Those Rat motors were hard on valve guides and push rods, particularly when they bounce air born briefly. Some of the crew I ran with had 18 foot sprint boats so unlikely I was going to beat them anyway and to be honest, the ladies, were a bit scared of the smaller boats and I liked to ski so it was a self limiting situation that worked in my favor.
      Those were fun days.

    2 obvious things right off the bat
    There are more, I just don't want to nit pick.
    1. Throw the rubber gaskets at the front and back of the intake in the trash. They have caused more oil leaks over the years than they have stopped.
    2. Oil will NOT run out of the oil filter boss unless you turn the engine over with the distributor in place. You really need to prime the engine oiling system before starting the engine. Then you will have to have the oil filter on. I take the filter off when installing the engine to keep from damaging it while lining the engine up.
    Other than these 2 items, I think the build was okay.

    • @albertgaspar627
      @albertgaspar627 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      There's more to compression than just a number to pick. There's local gas quality, aluminum heads help, and there's chamber design ("fast burn", etc). even spark plug temp range can have a factor, along with altitude above sea level.

I would have check piston to valve clearance, for cam before. Some clay an a spin your done, and get a block and a houseing of the trains your using to get the shaft length, so it is there to put together. But I will say it is not slam together and see if it works.

      @@TaylorSmithAutomotiveChannel Ok that's fine, I live in Canada so my mornings are cooler. Also with the 3/4 turn after 0 lash you might get valve float at the higher rpm level especially with the heavy bbc valve train.

    I think an 850 c.f.m is more than adequate!! People always want to OVER carborate these motors with big c.f.m. carbs!!! 850 c.f.m double pumper is what's feeding my rectangle port 468 cu. In. Big block & it dyno at 510 h.p.! More is NOT better! And run a stud girdle too!!!!

      You don’t know what your talking about Sam, did you dyno back to back with a 950 or 1050 carb as well?.. bet you didn’t. My big block made better power and torque with 1050 over a 950 and it would have made less again with an 850.

    So, you put 7000 or so miles on it in 5 years, then bore & rebuild it with no miles on it. You do maybe 1500 miles per year......Sell it to someone who might actually use it!

      Nothing wrong with running a crank scraper. The more oil you can keep in the oil pan and out of the rotating mass, the more oil there is available to the pump pickup. It probably doesn't free up a lot of power (why most folks run a scraper), but if you like turning corners hard, running a scraper and a good windage tray can make the difference between a happy, well lubricated engine or starved bearings in a wet sump engine.

    • @blackericdenice

      @@1965l88 Windage tray yes but a Crank scraper is a BF joke. Any oil on the crank would be slung off. Have you ever heard of an oil slinger? It throw oil onto other parts.
