One of my favourite things about this is how calm he is, so many folks think you need to be so high energy all the time, crazy camera shots and over editing, unnecessary music etc etc. I feel more relaxed and in a better mood after watching a fellers video.
@Delm21 You're exactly right..... I'm not refilling a guy's xanax prescription.
Less is more gooder, or something.
VGG entertains me enough to watch but is calm enough for me to fall asleep too. love it
so true too many cuts and rest nonses are so useless its better at film what you do and talk + give tips and what you have try or where you have find solution to that problem
preach it my man.
thats honestly what has lead me to hatting cleetuse he just seems so fake
Look...I'm a 71 year old retired nurse and I don't know the service end of a carburetor from a piston and I watched every single moment of this build, marveling at Derrick and his humor, his patience and his tremendous ability to explain. I learned a little bit about building an engine and a lot about how splendid a feller can be.
It was awesome.
Awesome Peggy!
@@ViceGripGarage You sound like Hank Hill now.
@@RD-km4yi Boy I tell yah hhwhhat!
Building an engine is a lot more fun than giving an enema.
@Intuition Trusted.....or ten...lol
Being humble is the best attribute a guy can have. Great build, Derek.
Humility is a tremendous attribute to have. Derek has big piles of it.
It's easy to fall into the trap of thinking that Derek's a bit of a "cow boy" mechanic after seeing some of the crates he gets running but this Big Block build series demonstrates there's much more to this guy.
Underrated comment
So true. I’ve realized how bad my math skills are by comparison
He's a pro. He is just humble, and like to have fun. They way it should be.
Most definitely, VERY VERY VERY SHARP MAN/MECHANIC INDEED!!!!
He is super smart and knowledgeable , just having fun with all those old Jaloepys! Lol
Listening to this bloke just makes me feel calm.
Bob Ross of cars
Same same; he's from Wisconsin, United States
I love this guy.
Yes indeed, I would kill to have a mechanic like him close enough to do my car repairs for me !!
Yep, good guy!!! I try everyday to be more like him. He's a role model of mine.
The "Bob Ross" of engine building. I'm not building a motor but I sure do like the program.
That was a beautiful sentiment...the bob ross of engine builders... beautiful bro..just beautiful!!!!!
If Derek says ...Happy little... when he puts lipstick on the BB im gonna die laughing
And we'll just put a little bumpstick right in here, a lightning whirler back here, and oh, why not put a fuel make it happener up here to finish it off.
Lol dude spot on 😂. He paints happy engines everywhere
Funny you say this, I got a Bob Ross mountain dew ad for the video
I love the sound of the gear drive. You really should let Jessica light the tires up the first time. It’ll set a good example to your boys of how to treat your wife
Keep this at 69 👍
YES ! ! !
Amen to that! Count me in. Gotta love the sound of a V8 engine on a Dyno.
@@post_historic downvotes on youtube dont change the upvote count :/
And to remind them incase they forgot that moms a bad-ass
The thing I like about this channel is that Derek isnt all flashy. Hes just a down to earth guy following his passion to support his family. Hes not out blowing money on fancy stuff just to blow it up for views. Hes elbow deep building his dream vehicles and teaching us a thing or two along the way. Your knowledge is amazing and I appreciate you sharing it with us sir!
Exactly bud. Same reason I follow Derek and the boys from down under. The skid factory..and Nugget garage. I can relate to all these dudes as they seem like us regular guys.
@@mynameis63 Me three. Derek is so humble and funny that I got hooked on his videos "Like Now!"
isnt flashy? Ha , you must not have noticed when a feller gets dressed up in his goin to town clothes! LOL He is 23.576% pimp but he just hides it well.....
This guy so underrated. He is so hilarious and a down to earth guy. No need for flashy videos and destroying stuff like others have said. Just all around genuine content
Keep it simple stupid.
I'm glad you made the Uncle Buck comment at the end of the video because that land yacht definitely was giving off Uncle Buck Vibes..
I was secretly hoping for a big back fire 😂
I only have one problem with VGG and that is the videos keep ending.
And there to short!
The frame on Independence is going to creak like Betty White's back when he gives it the onions.
She's drier than Abe Vigoda's neck, bruh!
Woke up feeling kinda rough, but then I see Part 3 is here and that engine's singing and everything just feels right again.
My sentiments exactly!! I had the added pleasure of neighbors testing on their Harley's though. First warm day here in Minnesota in a while, gotta blow out some cobwebs, aggression...I don't know. I didn't need to sleep in I guess.
I've watched more engine building series than I can think to count and this one is by far the most useful. Simple explanations and common sense. Great job man, love all your content!
Thanks
I have yet to build an engine. This makes me want to go build one myself!!
Do it! Did my first engine when I was 16. No better feeling of satisfaction in the world and no one was more surprised than me when it actually stated.lol
JUST DO IT
REALLY? HEHE looks like you were half way there on the Dodge Coronet! LIFES TOO SHORT GO DO THE DAMN THING lolz :)
@@bmck9097 Did my first one in my early 20s. Punched out 302 build into a Fairlane. Spent a lot of time researching parts combos, machine work, assembly procedures, etc. Promptly bent the cheap pushrods I used on the first test drive (didn't cheap out on the replacement set lol), had some kinks to work out with the throttle linkage, started the engine compartment on fire due to oil on the headers while adjusting the valves, but once I got it dialed in, she was a screamer that would keep pulling past 6500 RPM. It felt good that I put 40k miles on it and there was not a single time I drove it that it didn't do a red line pull. Didn't scatter parts and had good compression when I got rid of it so I consider that a big win for a first build. Some of the funnest times I ever had building and driving that car.
I just recently rebuilt my first engine, just a 4 banger for an s10, but it's running strong!
As impressive as this build series was, I'm more impressed that you're a very knowledgeable guy when it comes to engine building, yet you don't seem to be the type that takes himself too seriously. We need more people like you, for sure.
Thanks for the great content!
Appreciate it
A guy has never rebuilt an engine in his life and never really intends to but damn this is fascinating and really interesting. You sir are a mechanical wizard.. 👍🏻😎😁
@Billy White Jr. if you watched this full series, you know those parts too! It’s all just spinning metal, get in there!
In my opinion this is the best automotive content in existence!
This was a fantastic series, sir! Felt like I snuck into mechanic school and nobody noticed I hadn't paid tuition! Thanks for doing all the extra camera shots and editing to take us along with you; truly great content! You're a talented teacher and a fun guy to virtually hang out with.
You’ve got the heart of a teacher. It’s been a blast watching you do this literally from the ground up. Great build, Amigo! I hope you get to thoroughly enjoy this! 🍻
A fella is just coming to from last nights cold snacks during the live stream and here a guy is again!!!
Best get more cold snacks. Yep.
A guy can't wait to hear all the eagles singing out of those open headers when shes all done! Great series!
I literally just got done watching part 2. Perfect timing.
No pun intended!
35 degrees
This was one of the best video series ever. Feels like i should be paying you to watch this. I even recommended it to my gf who has no interest in building an engine
This series has been great! Makes me want to build an engine just so I can have a excuse to buy something to put it in.
best weekend ever 2 vidjas and a live stream spoiling a guy.
Yup. We are completely spoiled now...
My new version of getting lucky twice in one weekend. Lol!
this is the difference between a "crate"engine,. and a "great" engine!!
nice build!, can't wait to see it in the car and burning some rubber!! ;)
Great series,Derek. Glad she stayed together. Anyone’s who’s built a engine knows the stress at a Dyno . She sounds perfect! Great job
Thank you so much Derrick for the engine build tutorial . A guy can learn a lot from watching someone like you , I've been a mechanic for 45 years plus and I like how you take the time going into detail giving the do's and don'ts ... From my perspective you definitely are very well versed in engine building and I for one would be honored to have a guy like you put a engine together for me , especially when you want it done right the first time around....
Joe... Navy veteran....
Yeah, he's funny. Yeah, he's down to earth. Yeah. he's a good fella. But what impresses me is this guy's knowledge. Really amazing.
That rear axle is going to last one minute for every bolt, lol. If you give her the ketchup.
thats 3 burnout competitions 😂😂10min something tells me itll last a couple pulls at best
I’m
Looking forward to this “ not what you’re expecting “ paint scheme for the block
That there's a no-shitter!
Anyone other than me thinking there might be red, white and blue involved? Maybe a star or two , or 50? Just a thought
@@lancemclean9273 it looked good natural, so i vote clear.
i read that in a captain kirk voice lol loved it
“ No replacement for displacement “, that. Big block is gonna rock you back in your seat. Fun city. Thanks for all you do Derek, and hi to Jessica b.
Took the words right-outa-my-mouth! No replacement for displacement!
Damn right. 500 horse on regular gas.
Exactly!! I have always said CI = HP
My wife and I really appreciate the closed captions being turned on. There for a while I could only watch you on the phone. Whenever I streamed it to the TV my wife didn't know what was being said since she is deaf. Now we both can watch and she knows what's going on. Good deal buddy.
TH-cam does those automatically, sometimes right away, sometimes a week later. Im glad this time it was quick!
Just fantastic. One of the coolest videos I have ever seen.
Was gonna be rude about the dislikers .. but they’re butt hurt enough . Best channel I follow !
They have to be Russian bots or something, right? What person with a beating heart would dislike this?
Agree I don’t understand why anyone would dislike this or any of Derek’s content, and I’m a Ford man through and through but he always gets a 👍🏻👍🏻from me !!
Talk about “bring the thunder” budget “BEAST”!!!! Nice job feller, can’t wait til she’s in independence and watch them eagles fly🦅
If the blown corvette was any indication, oh baby, them eagles are gonna be a soaring ! ! ! Fred
Love those torque numbers, gonna feel that through the seat....
Yeah I don't even think you'll need boost. What I didn't say that out loud did i. I must be sick.
Great build Derek!!! Cant wait to see that puppy sing!!!!
It’s good to let the engine know what you expect of it in a firm but kind voice.
In your closing, I really appreciate your respect for the trades.
Derek, if a guy didn’t know better I would think you know what you’re doing building a big block.
Love how that gear driven timing sounds. She's ready to bolt into my ford fiesta. Lol
*A KING, THAT WE DO NOT DESERVE!!!*
*VGG FOR EVER!!!!!*
Nice numbers my friend! A build like this can happen for under 3k, this is how, source your bbc from an RV, RV's usually have under 50k miles on them in m experience and can be bought for 1000$ or less if the "house" part is clapped out. I've had engines come out of campers with literally no ridge, just hone it, new bearings throw in some speedpros and your off to the races literally. Source your intake headers and carb on the used market and buy the cam that best suits your build and you can make this power easy. Then you tear down the house portion of the RV burn the wood, curbside the plastic and fiberglass, then scrap the rolling frame (i usually get between 300-600 back depending on price of scrap and size od RV) Happy building guys!
Cant wait to see it all together and rippin! It been a great series so far and i cant click fast enough when i see a new video is up
Same here Broken !
I've always been a huge fan of the "whine" that a gear driven timing set puts out. That big block sounds about ready for stump pulling Mr. Great job!!!!
I was just going to ask what the whine was....didnt know that thanks!
Is the gear drive the quiet one? I installed one in my small block chevy.
The engine looks great, can't wait to see it painted!
Thanks!
Hope it’s Ford blue lol
@@brucerae5522 My guess is red, white, and blue!
Your level of knowledge is amazing. Still a very humble guy as well. Great work Derek, loved this mini series, super interesting to watch being from the UK, American V8’s aren’t something you see too much of over here 👌🏻
A guy showed his hand on this 3 parter. Derek knows his stuff and can draw pretty good too. Randy doesn't just let anyone strap an engine down in the fire station. He doesn't like when amateur builders bring the thunder and parts spray all over the dyno room. My brother has two engines that came from Competition. One now ten years old and still a beast. Nice video guys.
That gear drive sure does bring joy to a guy’s life... right now
I could listen to that big block idle all day. I love the gear drive timing set. It does sound like a big roots blower!
Them numbers and expenses correlation is quite a flex. And i like it!
Some channels get a few bucks and get crazy builds that most can’t afford. I miss that about some old channels I don’t watch anymore. Love that this guy, and others like Johnathan W keep is simple.
Seeing you put this together from just hunks of metal to a whirling machine. Wow! I'm not even a car guy that much, but just watching it rev in the test room is amazing and inspiring!
I get a feeling he’s going red white and blue with the motor too
I was thinking the same... probably just red and white on the engine because the firewall is already blue...
True and considering the distributor and filter and stuff is already red too
Gold for sure
Fingered out my notifications. Sweet can’t believe part 3 is here. D has been putting in OT on OT. Thank you bud.
@krvnjrcbs nope fingered
' ... there are some really talented guys out there ..'. Yeah, there certainly are!
Derek, you make some wholesome entertainment. Could you do an in depth video on the transmission you plan on dropping in independence?
Very Very informative video, we old timers made all the mistakes you articulated during this 3 part series. TYSM for making us all relive those awful memories.. SparkYouLater!.
Morning coffee with VGG?
Absolutely🍻🍻🍻🇺🇸🇺🇸
Been up 5 min(according to TH-cam) and I'm watching!!! A guy gets real excited when he hooks his eyeballs on a new video from you.
Great build and killer results!! Someday i'd love to build my own engine! Lot of work but lots of fun at the end! Also i'd say the dislikes on the video well those guys must have dropped a bottle cap in their intake! 🤣🤣
The dislikes are from people who are angry at the world and themselves for being LOOOOSERS ! ! ! ! !
Prius owners.
Awesome series! I love how you show us lots of tips and tricks, sprinkling in humor, but also showing us what the "everyman" can do! Thanks and keep the content coming!!
I have a couple friends who rebuild engines and are always trying to talk to me...and usually I just smile and nod because I don't have the foggiest idea what they're talking about. I've done plenty of maintenance on engines and swapped out a part or two, but I've never built an engine. At first I almost passed this series up because of that, but now I'm glad I watched because I learned a thing or two. Very interesting series...thank you!
That thing sounds sick with the gear drive, I've always been a fan of them!
Quit your whining.lol
This is my favorite channel on youtube i love the way how you explain the things you do allways makes me smile even on a bad day 👍😁 greeting from 🇳🇱
Derek, this was a great series. I have 0 intention of ever doing something like this myself but it's great to see all the steps laid out. Looking forward to the rest of the Independence series!
This is my favorite car program.i can't stand watching other car shows because they just seem unrealistic to the normal person and a normal person's budget. Thanks for the great videos.
This was a very interesting watch! I like how easy DB makes this look. Most times a guy can get very intimidated watching builds, but this looks so easy even my old lazy butt could do it
Just notice , those light pipes are going straight to the outlet ... a guy will say , thats some nice and functionable cable management .
I’ll send you over some of our 99 octane from the U.K. You’ll love it!
its rated differently from country to country
@@71sc502 I believe so.
Try the airport...
Airport fuel!
The sound clip of the "Vice Grip Garage" intro title is exactly what I want my exhaust to sound like.
Point it toward the carb that way when it twist to go into place it will point toward number 1 ! Lord yeah R44T that’s what I’ve always ran ! I had a old GM mec that worked for decades he told me that was one of the best plugs you could get for performance ! Like every thing your doing cool video love the lightning hoses and evil-bay I’ll have to remember that one !
Completely agree with Richard (below). You put on a good front Derek of being a "shade-tree mechanic" but I'd have no problem letting you tinker with my vehicles anytime. But you'd be bored for sure. Admire your knowledge and personable demeanor. Your vids are very enjoyable to watch. Keep it up!
a feller just woke up and of course i had to put on that new vice grip !
Watching a guy looking around that engine when it first starts up for leaks/issues, reminds me of a new mother with her first baby 🤣🤣
I love the sound of the timing set you put in it, gear drive for the win
Keeps timing accurate too!
You remind me of the two mechanics in the little town in Kansas where I went to grade school. Neither of them ever got excited about anything and yet they could build engines and fix cars like it was nothing.
That engine sounds so good.
I watched the series from the beginning to the end. Even though I don't have a big block myself it gave me some ideas for the spare 5.3l 3rd Gen LS I picked up last summer for my old 04 Silverado. The truck itself has become a practice project to get it road safe again as it needs the frame replaced/fixed. Since I took auto body back in high school it gives me the chance to brush up on my painting & body skills again as well. Plus it gives me the opportunity to practice welding body panels. I was more for painting and body prep during class so I never got much welding in. As for the spare engine, it gives me the chance to learn how to build one which I never got the chance to try. My father always maintained his vehicles but not to the point of doing engine building. Mostly just standard maintenance. Once something got bad enough my parents just junked their vehicles, I despise the throw-away mentality. Plus I put too much money into it trying to fix it up when I was driving it to just scrap it. Either way it's going to be a bit. I already have an 81 Yamaha YZ 465 project that comes first. Once the weather starts warming up I'll start collecting parts. :)
Guy clicking soon as he seen this !
Yep. Me too
I had to stop watching the live show from last night to click on this one.
Yep
A guy's got to.
I was getting up to pee when the notification popped up. That was a hard decision on which to do first...
Good job, that's plenty of power for me, more than anything i've ever driven
A fella's gotta appreciate the flat torque curve of that budget build.
That was CRAZY! 540 FLAT!!
Damn man you even understand the ancient secret of deciphering the weather. You truly are the master.
Impressive outcome. The dyno does not lie.
You did it again..... slow clap👏👏👏👏
Havent watch it yet, pressed like anyway.
I do with every video hahaha
@@Ilovechocolatelabs same here, great guy, great content
Always
Yup. Every VGG video gets an "Instant Thumbs Up" from me also. Fred
Really though what's not to like?
I have 9 antique cars and tractors. That motor has more HP than all of them combined. :)
Another successful VGG rebuild. Should be enough horses to blow up that rear end.
Way to rock the Dyno! It stayed in one piece and that's most important! On to the next video!
I love this!!! I grew up in the late sixties/early seventies and poor, so we worked on our own cars, and I love it.I have three little boys and in a few years, Lord willing, me and them little fellers is gonna build us a truck or maybe a car to teach them how, so that when I move up to heaven they will know what it's like to build and enjoy something like this. Thank you, Derek and Jessica and kids, for helping me see that I can do this and teach my kids as well. May God bless you all!
Is that Randy? From competition engines, He's a great guy.
I was way off on my guess of 425hp and 505tq. Waiting not so patiently for the first fire up in Independence.
After part 2 i am excited to see the results. The live feed last night was great Derek! I’m in Chattanooga Tennessee if you want to ask anything about the area. @lextech on insta. I’d recommend Signal Mountain, you’d love it. No crime, peaceful mountain top, right by the city outskirts. Hit me up if you want. 💯✌🏻
Yes you did save money building your engine, BUT also you know exactly what parts are inside it, you know that you didn’t overlook any issues and YOU know the man who built your engine too and that would mean a lot to me.
Great engine!! Great budget!!! Great HP and torque!!! And as always Great video and series !!!!
Thank You for letting us tag along!!!
You're my brother from another mother! It's great to be on the receiving end of that humor for once.. You're making me miss my home town and my motorhead friends. You're mind is brilliant... and you know you're going to have a hard time talking normal when you get to my age.. it's ok! ha ha Thank you man!!! And doing that Chevelle warms my heart. I always wanted a Chevelle since 77 and now I get to see one inside and out.. and you saved it from the junkyard!! This is better than a Christmas present. Rescuing those old boats from fields is awesome too.
i'd bet money shes gonna be painted red white and blue just like the 289 out of the ford snowmobile
Not everybody gets Warren Johnson to dyno their engine.
Thanks for this Ten Thousand Days! Warren Johnson, wow! What a legend. Virginia Minnesota... nice neighbor!

Great stuff! Who couldn’t love a big block! 🍻🍻
My son and I watch your channel every night before bed. And we've been watch this little series and tonight when she started up he started pointing at the screen and yelling g for his mom to come see. He's 1 and is definitely all boy. He loves watching you work on cars as much as me its our nightly routine. So don't stop making these please im not sure what else we would watch. Everytime I start my old harley he runs out and wants to be all over it hes ready to be able to ride. I'm glad he loves all this as much as I do maybe he'll be able to carry on the love of an old engine singing one day. So just wanted to say thanks for all the great episodes we sure do love em!
Man ,that engine sounds WICKED !!!!!!!!!!!!!! Like everything Derek does this series was FUN to watch.
