    Camshaft #01-418-8 is a cast cam core as indicated by the -8 in the part number. If I was ever to consider a roller cam profile, I would choose a camshaft ground on a 8620 billet steel core. That camshaft looks cool sitting on the shop bench only, the nature of it's core however only invites problems as the core itself doesn't have the structural integrity that a billet steel core offers. There's no 'free lunch', therefore if you go to a roller profile of any type an 8620 cam core would be your only choice. Spend wisely.

    • @GoatBoy_45-70
      @GoatBoy_45-70 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Viking Mike. its cast true but it is cast steel, its not gray cast ether its high grade stuff, there is a difference between cast iron and cast steel, its carbon oh and machinability ie $.

      I dont like this cam, lift way too low causing low rpm range. Biggest reason to run a roller is added lift, i think low lift defeats the purpose of a roller.

    Comp Cam - you need to tell us what the rocker ration is for this setup. If it's 1.5, you have room to boost this cam while in your car. I used to do that in the 1980's and 1990's. So I could put in 1.7's on the weekend to have some fun. Then return it back to my 1.5 daily driver.

I'm looking for a good combo that will get me in that 450 to 550 hp without breaking the bank. Thanks in advance for any input you may have.

    I'm currently eyeballin' a 1998 Chevy 3500 HD flatbed with a 454. If I get it, I'll be installing a performance cam down the road. I also want to convert it to 4 wheel drive. I'm told it's fairly easy because it has a straight front axle and leaf springs.

    • @markrich3271
      @markrich3271 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Gmt400s all had IFS none had straight axles. You have to redesign the front end for 4x4, redo the transmission to accept the transfer case new drive shaftS , add IFS torsion bars and brackets , add shifter linkage and change the oil pan. It would be easier to find a truck that's already 4x4 and make it a flat bed . Then it would convert one to a straight axle or ifs and 4x4.

    • @OddTimeMan

    • @RalphRomano2
      @RalphRomano2 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you look at the cam specs, it's a VERY VERY low lift cam for the duration. It's made for a truck and not a sporty car. I agree, even with a truck I would have picked a cam with much more lift. This one is .510 lift, and I would have gotten something around the .560 - .575 range. That lift change would have made over 500 hp for sure. CompCams make the best cams and offer variations on what they make. Many times they make these cams for a 1.5 rocker ratio, so you can add more rocker arm to get the specs you want.

If he is looking for big horsepower(600+), I prefer the earlier Mark IV style blocks or an aftermarket, such as Dart or World Products."

    00:15 - ~1200HP naturally aspirated BBC . . .
    Must be running race fuel and some high compression then; as not many BBC will easily push over 900HP without serious compression.
    That said; your camshaft installation is a shocker !!!
    If not the lobes; then lube those journals.
    Otherwise that old timing chain you re-used might just break.
    And you know what happens after that.
    Bye bye pistons, valves, conrods, and block.
    Finally, I'm not sure I would be so excited about a ~420HP 7.4 litre BBC; after a camshaft swap.
    Those power numbers are not great for a 7.4 Litre V8.

      Gregory O'Neal my buddy installed a performer intake with an 850 Holley with annular discharge boosters, smallish cam, headers, stock heads, upgraded rockers. awesome street motor. idles perfect, rips from idle to 5k.

    • @shitbox7413
      @shitbox7413 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      paul mryglod, I agree, performer is an excellent manifold for making low rpm torque, and would be best in a 77 Corvette where hood clearance is at a minimum. Performer RPM is better yet if you have the hood clearance...
