Martin Short is the only person that can make me laugh out loud when I’m alone on the couch. His brain is so fast! He’s a comedic genius. And I loved his book. You get to know the private Marty, his pain when he lost his wife. And you learn why he and Steve Martin are so close.
I had the great good fortune of both meeting and interviewing Mr. Short and he was everything you would want him to be..sharp as a tack, super nice and, of course, funny as hell. Hard to think of anyone walking around today who u could argue is more genuinely, viscerally funny.
Sorry man, but I could list about 100 people that I personally find funnier than Short, but that is a matter of taste. I am glad to hear that he was super nice though.
So much love and gratitude for this man. Marty gave my brother and me so much laughter when it was needed the most. Then i was surprised - long story short, in his excellent memoir, he taught me how to grieve, which i needed right as i finished the book. I just love him, he's a special human being and we're so grateful to and for him. :0)
I'm so lucky to have grown up with Martin Short on TV. As a Canadian kid, SCTV was around for me from about Grade 5 in elementary school. We all loved it. I kept watching it for a few years, then when I was a teen Martin Short was on SNL. I didn't always get to watch it, but loved it. For both SCTV and SNL, not just me, but my sister and friends would wait for the Martin Short parts. If SCTV was a rerun, we'd wish so much that he would be in the opening part where they show the cast for that particular episode. It was guaranteed laughs if he was on. There was even a Martin Short Special on when I was in high school, which my friend taped. We'd watch that over and over. Fun times! Martin Short explaining to David Letterman about his appearance on Johnny Carson with Bette Davis makes me cry with laughter. I'm blessed to have watched so many episodes of him and John Candy and all the other greats on SCTV. Canadians are so rich when it comes to comedy. Lucky!
Fantastic interview and great to hear about all the behind the scenes stories. Everytime I hear reference or an impression of Phil Hartman it makes me wish there were a show focused on Phil or a compilation the preceeding. Thanks for doing these ,So brilliant
Martin. Dana. The 2 best sketch comedy actors ever in my opinion. Add Hartman and a few others to that list but these two are the greatest of all time.
Thank you for reminding me about Ed Grimley .. what a great character . I am almost 56 so SNL was a huge part of my life and I’m still watching cold opens and update lol I love these conversations because they are so not like every interview I ever saw with either of you or any of your guests . We get to hear great stories and it make me feel like I am getting to know you and your guests plus it brings back so many great memories 💚 thank you
Love all these guys. Huge fan from the beginning. Grew up watching Marty on letterman and loved him in Father of the Bride. I was inspired by Marty to be funny with my friends in high school. Marty and Steve Martin are huge father figures to me. I even loved Mr. Short in the TV show Merlin. I also love Dana and David. When I had hard times, I watched Dana's stand up and it totally changed my bad bad day in college. I also loved Dana doing jimmy Stewart on conan's final show and he inspired me to do my jimmy impression to cheer up my mom and dad. I'm 35 by the way....anyway I really love David also. Huge fan of Emperors New Groove and lights out. Loved the Wrong Missy. Such geniuses. So quick and real, honest, and lovable. So in love with all of them. So handsome. Probably taller than me. I'm 5'7. But seriously I have looked up to them my whole life. Proud of them for sure. Thank you gentlemen. Can't wait for more. I've listened to all the podcasts. Especially all the early ones. Thanks for being such an inspiration to my children and my family
Martin Short as Robin Williams in an SCTV Tang commericial is such a wonderful impression. It was up for a few years on youtube but now it seems to have been removed.
I don't think Martin Short has not EVER annoyed a legendary actress he crossed paths with! He has stories about Lucille Ball, Bette Davis, and probably Katherine Hepburn. He pissed them all off! 😂
26:30 Dana saying a Malkovich impression can turn into Travolta or Walken... very true. But here's me thinking earlier in the interview that sometimes Dana really really sounds like Dennis Miller (and not just when doing an impression of him!).
I produced a campus TV magazine type show at The Ohio State University in the 80s. Dana was doing a show at Mershon Auditorium on campus. He was red hot on SNL at the time.. We were able to find him at Columbus Airport and asked for an interview in a room at airport we set up in. He not only agreed to help us college kids he gave 100 percent and let us follow backstage. Total great guy. I still have the tape but it's 3/4 inch and have nothing to play it on. Dana had a killer set that night. Thanks again Dana
Everything Short did on SCTV was really funny. I wish he would've shared more SCTV stories. It's a shame that his stint on SNL with Shearer and Guest didn't get a chance to flourish. It was nice to hear him compliment Jan Hooks. She was my favorite female cast member without a doubt. It was sad how she faded away and then left us.
"It's a shame that his stint on SNL with Shearer and Guest didn't get a chance to flourish. " They only signed up for a year! All these men had flourishing careers and didn't need to do SNL. That year was the last year Dick Ebersol was executive producer of SNL before Lorne returned. Even if those cast members had not been final with their contracts, in all likelihood Lorne would have gone with an entirely new cast or mostly new cast. It just would have been awkward to stay with the show with the transition from Ebersol to Michaels.
@@AvengerII I know all that already. It would've been nice to see this gifted group of people write material that reflected their talents. Sure, they had the occasional great sketch, but their hearts were clearly not in it for the most part. Ok, cue reply shooting everything I just said down:
Marty is a hero of mine and to me really should be to anyone whoever truly embraces the comedic medium. A prime example being the Jiminy Glick “interviews” which are great comedy as at least a partly spontaneous sardonic spew fest. But there are some duds as well. With all that improvising there simply has to be. And that’s what you have to appreciate. The balls of doing that high wire act over and over again. I will say thanks to youtube I spotted his supremely challenged character Lawrence on Half Wits the SCTV bit. My god how can something so dark and wrong be so GD funny? Truly incredible how he became that really just mentally lost and repellent cretin. “Righty-O Alex.”
The synchronized swimmer skit with Harry Shearer. I think it is SOoooo bad, you cannot find it anywhere online today. "I'm not that, strong, a swimmer,..yet". Ed Grimley, as well, but even my mother couldn't control her laughter from the swimming bit.
Spade caught himself pissing Eddie Murphy off again with that Golden Child comment, lol. I'm sure Eddie will say it's racist like "look it's a shooting star".
Thanks to dana and David for doing this. Been wanting to be dana carvey my whole life. So glad just to hear him talk again.. I won't say what everyone wants is to see u guys because of ur history of genius physical comedy both naturals ( dana obviously better) but yeah just glad to at least hear you guys. And dana is better. Like way better. they know. Like way way better....
WOW guys , this is like so cool . All the inside baseball… it’s so much fun , things like like on one of the other podcasts David tells the Johnny Carson story . An hour into this one and David gets to talk with Martin about it . Cool af . I don’t have any Q’s .
Great interview! That was fun. I've just discovered this show & I'm loving it. Although, as an Aussie from Melbourne, I have to say that the Aussie accent attempt near the end was horrible; but then, almost nobody from outside of Australia can do our accent. We can always tell when it's a non-Aussie actor playing an Aussie character.
Tommy Smothers was the impression Johnny liked the best IMO Love all you guys, Hotel Transylvania is a weird add Marty is the best there is at fun funny stories and conversations
Love show. Spade please do another sitcom I've watched just shoot me and rules of engagement a million times they play in my garages tv 24/7 u r my "radio"
This has been out for two days and only had 572 views out of 335 million Americans and I’m the 15th thumbs up??? ??? What kind of sick society are we??? Can I take them all to lunch and just listen? Like a fly on the wall?
It’s ugly out here I know man. It’ll get better here soon right when we think it won’t it will. Joke is on those who lose themselves to fear and brainwashing from watching tv media. That and social media censorship, it’s destroyed it’s own base of users. The system has collapsed
Martin Short on the couch with Johnny Carson, dares to interject into a Fred de Cordova decision to cut Jake Johansson - no shut up, because Martin was TOO DAMN FUNNY for a comedian to follow him.
So great to listen to you guys. While the rest of the world is going to shit you are like a shelter in the storm. So nice to be entertained by two genuinely funny people. Fuck artificial intelligence. Wait a minute. You guys are the real deal, aren't you?
The dangerous toy story with 60 minute story. Smoking and sweating and he has the glasses. Why do I need to read it. Burned into my memory. My parents loved comedy and we used to talk about that one.
Dana , I have one question for you … do you find bugs bunny to be attractive when he puts on a dress and plays a girl bunny ? I love this show I’m a huge fan keep it up guys !
Martin Short is god and Ed Grimley is Jesus!! First of all Robin Williams does Martin Short. Cha!! STV is, was, will always be comedy and that's all. Period. Billy Crystal on Soap... Jody, oh yes please yes!! "Soap" is everything!! So fell in love with Steve in "The Jerk" Dennis Miller elevated comedy to uber level. Too bad humans aren't smart enough.
I could watch Martin Short as nervous defense attorney Nathan Thurm forever. It never gets old.
Martin Short is the only person that can make me laugh out loud when I’m alone on the couch. His brain is so fast!
He’s a comedic genius.
And I loved his book. You get to know the private Marty, his pain when he lost his wife.
And you learn why he and Steve Martin are so close.
Best memoir of all time, I must say. The audiobook must also be purchased, cannot imagine missing out on him reading and doing the characters.
Carvey and Short are two legends. Both at the top of the game in improv, and impressionism.
My favorite, Martin Short. He takes my breath away- because I can’t stop laughing. My kids grew up with the Jiminy Glick series of brilliance.
And David Spade was so awesome on "Rules of Engagement", one of my all time favorite shows.
Martin Short is a national treasure ❤️
A national treasure for Canada I think. But agree he’s awesome and the most OG because he was as big a star on SCTV (the originators) as SNL
Can we retire the term 'national treasure' yet?
Martin Short is the best guest! Another great conversation gentlemen!

Too funny!

I agree. Great idea about playing Phil Hartman clips! 🫶👏
You guys are all legends and absolute darlings of comedy. Thank you for adding so much joy to my life! xD
Martin Short is one of the funniest human beings to ever walk the planet. Same is true of Spade and Carvey. Very interesting and entertaining.
Martin. Dana.

Two of my favorite people, talking to my other favorite person. It just doesn’t get any better than this. 💕💕

Martin on Conan is hilarious. Basically Martin roasting Conan from start to finish, lol. They make a great comedic duo.
Great episode! Glad you're putting these on TH-cam.

He really does. His natural voice sounds just like Miller's.
Love all 3 of you guys! Comedy legends. Wish we could see yall 👀 but I'll be a blind fly 🪰
Gonna play devils advocate here. I'm actually glad I can't watch . Less time staring at a screen , more time listening while I do stuff.
@@cynthiaconey7317 great point!😊

I had all my 3/4 transferred (I was at OU)
Glad there is an SNL related podcast. Dana and David make a great pair.
Short is one of the few wits that can hang with Spade and Carvey. All three hilarious.
Yeah! Great hang!
Mr. Short the King
If he only did Glick he'd be immortal. But he did so much more. Fantastic comedian.
Would love a movie of the church lady and Glick
Holy fuck… If Ms Swan could pop in my life would be complete

His comedy is a given. His serious acting on Damages was incredibly good.
And he was grieving his wife's death while working on "Damages." Brilliant work.
Ignore the negatives! Sad people. You both are awesome!!!
Loved this. Martin 😊😊
Glick...love that character and he needs to come back!!!!!😅❤😂❤😅❤😂❤😅❤😂

I’ve read it at least 6 times now

These movies the neighbour would take you to. Were they at the Westdale Theatre?
Fascinating stuff, especially the lack of self confidence from Carvey and Spade.
