@sugardrat - they are well tuned - to the point that they produce the overtone to the bass note octave above - making it sound like there are 3 horns instead of 2 . Nicely done!!

I don't know much about ships, but Mr. Barker has a cool ship to carry his name.
The funny thing is that I used to have a manager named Jim Barker. I can't help but think of him just for a moment whenever I see this boat.
My question is how does the captain blow two of those horns at the same time? Are there like separate levers in the bridge control room of the ship?
I think there is a button for each horn so he holds down two of them. 🔊 🔉 🔉

Does any one know why modern lake ships have rounded bows in place of the older traditional pointed bows... "inquiring minds want to know""
Mostly economic since they can fit more stuff inside. But also they don't need to cut through the big waves on the open ocean.

Why is it that the earlier Great Lakes ore carriers mostly had forward bridges, but the current ones are all aft?

Lovely! But why is the prow of this ship so blunt? Wouldn't a sharper prow be more efficient?
They only sail the Great Lakes so they don't need the wave busting bow of the salties. The rounded bow just pushes water aside.
That looks like a nice place for ship watching.
It really is, and Duluth is a busy port.

I have watched many a video of ships coming to port in Duluth.
It’s where I live.
The JRB has the most soulful, impressive of them all.
I was lucky enough to catch the Barker a few more times this year than usual and it still an awesome spectacle every time.
What horn does this ship use? Leslie 425 or cunningham 6B
No idea, but there are two horns on the Barker.
Wonder how deep that channel is? Draft of those huge boats must be 15'+.
wondering how ships horns.. and train whistles compare then....
The bridge horn is actually a train horn (the second horn in the video).
alaricdogface I’ve noted you can get a train whistle in the trunk of a car.. so I’m thinking is the ships one any larger.. like the size of church organ for example
@@batchint I don't think they are that big but I haven't seen them up close. Now I want a pipe organ made from boat and train horns!
alaricdogface well if they placed in the vessel when it was built it maybe part of another system...
there was such a thing as a steam organ in the states.. but I can’t remember the title of that...
What would their speed be coming into port? 15 knots ? Or less.
The harbor speed limit is 3 knots and I think it is the same for the channel.
And nobody EVER breaks a speed limit.
How do you find out when the ships are coming

How come white smoke from exhausts , is it condensation trail due to being so cold outside ?
No, just good old heavy fuel oil smoke from the diesel engines.
alaricdogface this shot has a vapour trail , other vids show black/grey smoke when its not so cold, the trucks on ice road truckers do this also
I think the Barker has big Pielstick engines which tend to burn a lot of slag.
