    • @fabianchow512
      @fabianchow512 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      We test drove one too - what a beautiful refined car, especially with the TC auto (DCT’s simply don’t work for me in the city). But yeah the Aircon controls going through the infotainment system - as the dealer’s opinion confirmed, most likely a VW cost saving exercise. What an incredibly daft move in terms of safety - all the new safety technology invested in, completely sabotaged by forcing the driver to take their eyes off the road just to change the fan speed given they have to tap through the menu screens at least twice. Stupid, stupid, stupid, and a dealbreaker for otherwise such a well designed car.

    • @timmarks8941
      @timmarks8941 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@fabianchow512 exactly. It genuinely felt dangerous to be trying to touch through the menu to do basic controls to radio and aircon, things Most people can do without looking in other cars.

    On the confusion between liftback and wagon, I chose the wagon, as you said, wagon looks better comparatively. Definitely the aircon control on the screen is definitely annoying, hope they bring the physical buttons. I had a scenario where my screen did not work, but the aircon setting was set at high, but could not reduce it until I stopped the car.

    Great review John! I think you get so much more for your money in this, than in an SUV at the same price point, in terms of space, quality feel and features. Not to mention the lower centre of gravity and lower weight, which usually result in better driving characteristics too.
    Side note: You mention a few "detractors' - detractors are people who disparage something, not negative features in and of themselves. Perhaps "drawbacks" or "flaws" would work better. Cheers.

    A nice looking vehicle and at a reasonable price. I think that manufacturers including air controls in the touch screen is a mistake as to me, it means that your eyes are off the road whist you scroll and adjust. A good old knob on the dash is easy to see and use. Too bad it is related to the biggest cheats in the manufacturing world.

    • @ravingmad765

  • @nikserof2183

    Thanks for the review, John. 8:29 It's a shame that the rear wiper has been deleted from the liftback. It used to set the Octavia (a sedan-looking liftback) apart from others. IMHO, not "simply clever" to delete a safety item. I can think of no reason apart from insane cost-cutting. I wonder is it was Skoda Australia's decision. Any argument that this shape doesn't need a rear wiper will fall on (my) deaf ears. In the UK, at least it's a no-cost option (on the Superb too). 3:10 I also cannot understand why the handy auto hold feature isn't available across all Octavia models. Perhaps someone can enlighten me. The new VW Golf has a similar ailment, with auto hold available only on the base model and GTI.

    • @rjbiker66
      @rjbiker66 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Why would you require autohold on a torque converter auto?

  • @balensydney
    @balensydney 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    With Skoda its usually a little behind VW, so the Kodiaq 2018 uses a-lot if the parts that my Golf 2014 uses (mirror, door handles, AC controls etc) while the same year (2018)Tiguan uses more updated in design for items i mentioned.
    None the less Skoda to me is the more affordable VW…

  • @syyeung
    @syyeung 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Good car, but it becomes $43000 if you want the full safety suite (and still no DAB radio). That's very steep, and there would be plenty of choices at such price point. One slight improvement is that they don't put critical safety equipment into different packages like they do in the other models.

  • @Onbehaard

    Wow, $32,990 is about £17,500, which is REALLY cheap for a brand new Octavia even for the basic model. I drive a 1.5 TSI SEL First Edition. Although costing equivalent of $47K, I thought it was very good value, especially it included a lot of optional extras as standard, like electric adjustable driver seat, navigation, the technology bundle Jonathan talked about and cabin ambience lighting. Alas my car doesn't have parking assist which would have been great. Nor does it have the snazzy pulsing indicators or a power boot raiser. Oh well, can't have everything and it is still a lovely car to drive.
    BTW my car has a bank of buttons below the screen, which includes one for air con, exactly where you want them to be. I wonder why they are not available here? I also noticed there wasn't a wiper on the rear windscreen which is annoying. Personally, I prefer the hatch back, it looks classier, I think and we don't need the estate version, as the boot is enormous enough.

    Nice review but no, Skoda is not more upmarket than VW. They are still at the bottom of the VW Group food chain. Skoda have been increasing prices noticeably the last couple of years and the Skoda Octavia Style is aligned more in price to the mid level Golf Life ( although the Skoda is $600 dearer). Golf also has all the safety and assisted driving features as standard and you have to pay for extra option packs for the Skoda. The standard Golf is no longer a price leader for VW and has more standard gear than the Skoda Ambition. One question though- does the Octavia have independent multi link rear suspension as per the Golf in Australia or does it have a torsion beam set-up? Whilst Skoda have increased their presence in Australia in recent years, their residuals are still not as good as Golf. Did you know that Skoda in Czech means ‘too bad’?

Do dislike any painted metal visible inside a vehicle around door frames/door cards and rear tailgate. Gas bonnet struts are a must in ‘21 as are rear disc brakes and I’d prefer a DSG as an automated manual and thus like their efficiency and only the baby boomers need a slush box. Wagon Octavia would be my choice however all VW group cars are creeping up in price and are starting to compete against each other however can’t wait for Cupra brand to land here.

      We’ve done a whole bunch of base model reviews in the last couple of months.

      @@chasingcars do you think VW would built a better and cheaper competitor to antagonize their icon? One might offer more space but less performance due to weight, less sound deadening or inferior plastics, fabrics, etc for a lower price. It all boils down to what someone's priorities and budget are

      Some of those things are true, but I think you underestimate the independence Skoda has within the Group. They're given a pot of money and sent off to develop the product themselves. Look at Kodiaq - it's clearly better than Tiguan. Kamiq? Clearly better than T-Cross. Volkswagen allows it to happen.

      @@chasingcars they allow it, yes, to encourage in house competition. But these days, with essentially the same suppliers and production methods, it is hard to achieve more for less, especially when production numbers are less. The only exception might be when Skoda in this case premier's a new platform before anyone else in the group. Then it might be possible for a while but how common is this?

    Excellent review 👌 Skoda cars are overpriced bland dull looking cars for people who don’t like driving and they are ok for taxi drivers only

      @@chasingcars nothing wrong with me champ, it’s just this, the presenter says “you can let me know in the comments section below” no fewer than 3-4 times per review. Most annoyingly, he says that about the most trivial details.
      Further to that, I’m quite sure (I may be wrong though) he no longer presents for Chasing Cars.
