Cordial Greetings, it is true what you say, however the Skoda Octavia in Europe is a very sold saloon, in fact it is always within the first 5 positions of the best-selling sedans in Europe, in recent years it has occupied the first place within in its C-class segment and second or third when they mix all the sedan segments in Europe. The Vw Golf is in the compact sports segment, the Skoda Octavia in that case competes with the Mercedes C-class, and with the Vw Passat, among others.
In most European countries, Octavia safely outsells Golf by now. But some Europeans still keep on buying VW cars because they come with an extra photograph of the founder the company, Adolf Hitler.
Have you watched the video? it is about space. a golf is a better looker I think, but value and square centimers per euro the skoda would be the better car. underneath it is the same tech, so that is no reason not to.

I bought a vrs Octavia a few weeks ago. First ever skoda I’ve owned & certainly won’t be the last. Great cars. Keep up the good work, from a fellow Irishman living down under. 👍
The alternator went last week. 131,000km on the clock. Oil leaked into it. Previous Sloppy mechanic, didn’t tighten a bolt correctly! Cost me 400 pound for alternator and 150 pound to fix. European cars are expensive to maintain down under! I’m the 3rd owner, service history is 100%. Bad luck!

Great review Mark, ordered Octavia last week, mechanical rear seat release 100 plus €, heated seats over €250, ambient lighting 200 plus €, none of which were standard on the Octavia Style, a lot of safety features optional also, I guess it’s VRT killing the spec on Irish cars. Still though it has what we need in a car so we went ahead and ordered.

Good review and I largely agree. But I have the Octavia first edition for about six weeks now and I do think you missed a few annoyances. 1. The voice control activates pretty much every drive without me wanting too. 2. The menu and homescreen are not really that "clever". I especially dislike the homescreen. I get that this is personal. 3. Why usb-c? Now pretty much everyone needs to buy new cables. It's a stupid decision imo. 4. There's a bug in the cruise control. I can only go up in steps of ten. Adjusting it downward has no issues. 5. No 12v adapter. The only one is in the boot. It's a friggin option (one that I missed sadly) that will set you back about 250 euro. It's a stupid choice for a family car (dvd's anyone?). 6. Eco control can't be turned off. You can turn it of for the drive but it automatically turns on the next drive. 7. Adaptive cruise control sucks and can't be turned off. It starts braking(rather abruptly) at least 100 meters before you actually reach the car in front of you. 8. The display on front of you can't be edited to your liking. 9. Lane assist doesn't do anything usefull at all. Might as well turn it off. 10. Collision warning is just as stupid as it was in my previous car. I had hoped it would have improved over the last four years. I'm fairly certain I missed one or two other annoyances but I can't remember them atm. I come from a superb (2016) and I liked that car better in almost every aspect. There's one important thing this Octavia has going for it though. This car drives better. It's just as comfortable, just as quiet, has a good engine (petrol, 150 HP) but it's more precise and less wobbly. Overall I'm not dissatisfied with the car, it just has it perks and quirks like all other cars. But it's certainly not the no-brainer for average Joe with a family since prices (first edition with no option is 34k euro here) went up quit a bit. I would (and did) check out a few competitors before ordering. If the new Focus was available back then I might have chosen that.
@@NobbyOnCars No I haven't, I could do that. It almost never happens when I'm alone in the car. It usually happens when the entire family is in it and doing what families do. Complain about your driving and yell at siblings. :)
Great Review tell it as it is very informative.I have an automatic Vrs and really like the new look. Considering a new Vrs but this review has helped open my mind a little. 150bph 2 litre diesel sounds nice
We have an Octavia - the old one - 2nd generation - automatic. But we're expecting the 3rd little one - I was thinking to pick up a Mercedes Benz Vito & sell the Octavia, but on the other hand, my GF loves the Octavia. I might keep the old Octavia a bit longer, get the 9-seat-minibus maybe a few months later than I was planning and keep the Octavia. Who knows. I guess the 2nd gen can survive for another 3-5 years in our household - but after that, we'll have to update for sure. At that point, I guess we'll pick up this gen for about 10k.
Hi. I am jealous of your being able to purchase these. They don’t come to US. This reminds me of my love of the VW bugs back in the 1960’s. They seemed so practical compared to to US cars of the time. John. USA
Skoda's are excellent, I'm running a 2010 VRS 170cr....swift and economical regularly see 55-62mpg. I got is in 2018 with 85k on the clock, now 145k and it has been reliable...
Hi Nobby. That's a fine looking car and so well kitted out. I have an a6 that cost €63 grand new and has no blind spot, heads up or active cruise control, yet this does.🤔 Keep up the good work.
Excellent review. It’s the small things that you point out that fascinates. Why doesn’t the Golf VIII get a gas bonnet strut ? It costs a lot more than the Skoda ?

Really really good car. I’ve got a mate coming to end of his finance of a Rapid saloon and the family has grown so will be pushing this onto him. Having bought a Kodiaq recently I’m jealous of all the tech but needed the 3XL size versus XL of the Octavia. Nice review 👍
Very sharp/classy looking car. Great review too. I’m glad of the mpg stat too. That will always mean more to me than lt/100km. I still use mpg on the Roadtrip app.
Well lt/100 km is for Europe and the rest of the world really MPG is just UK and US. And even then the gallon size is different from each other. So lt/100km is actually universally more clear.
Great review, proper review, no arsing around 👍. I've had a 131, 161 and a 191 Octavia doing 70000km a year, never have any trouble. The 191 is due to be replaced soon. Looking forward to picking up my mk4
I had one of the first mark 1 Octavias, and have had two more since then, but I now have a Rapid, which is a great car and does all I want without all the extra electronic gizmos that I don't personally need. Why can't we still buy Rapids in the UK, Skoda? You still seem to sell them in India for example.
Bright enough for my driving but I didn’t do huge amounts of country road driving. The fact that hi beams are also so white and crisp, they seemed perfectly acceptable
Interesting review as always. Sadly the latest VAG touch screen will most likely be enough to put me off. I know it sounds bad but I fiddle with the knobs on the in my old leon mk3 and golf mk7 just flicking to a specific song on the go or quickly upping the temperature. It's gone too fiddly Frenchy for my liking. I did laugh about the taxi....literally you are nearly guaranteed either a diesel Octavia or a petrol 07 avensis. Got a skoda taxi last year with 893000km on it.
I know how you feel. But as a Golf Mk8 leaser for half a year now let met tell you this. At first I struggled with it. You know the sliders etc. But after driving the car for a few months I learned that you adapt to it. You know how to use it. You learn how to use it smartly and just like that it is not a problem. And this is coming from a guy that also hated cars without a separate climate unit. I have driven a corolla before, also a BMW 1 series. I laughed at Peugeot for their designs and laggy in-screen climate controls. But at least in the Golf, you get the sliders which are separate from the screen. So literally with a few taps you can up and lower the temperature precisely, since you can both slide and tap the touch pad. For volume you use the steering wheel anyway so that volume slider is really just for the passenger. And there is a big difference between the French and this. The screen response. I have been in several Peugeots. And the screen is just way slower than in this. The VAG screens are as fast as recent phones so even if you want to edit something in the climate screen it reacts quickly. As I said you learn how to use it. And more importantly, how to use it less. At the Octavia it is a problem though. It only has the volume slider. The Leon and Golf have a temperature slider AND a volume slider. It takes me half a second to change temperature from 21 to 26 degrees in my Golf Mk8. In the Octavia it is a bit harder I guess. For air recirculation you can set it on auto. Fan speed auto. Defrost? it is in a separate button on the dash. It is really not as bad as you think. In your first test drive it will be a a pain. but after a few weeks/ a month it will be perfectly normal to you. That is the problem with most reviews. They use it for a few days, maybe a bit more than a week, and tell you it works poorly. Which is not realistic.
Thanks for detailed response. I don't believe I said it works poorly, I just showed you how you to change the temp using the screen and even demonstrated how to do it using voice commands.
We drive an O3 Combi FL 150HP TDI at this moment and still really pleased with it... that's why we ordered an O4 Combi RS 2.0TSI. A friend drives his third VW Passat. After sitting in our O3 he realised it is a little less cheaper VW but not that much cheaper. So he ordered a Kodiaq instead of a Tiguan. One thing I really miss in the normal Octavia is a rear multi link suspension despite the optional sport
@@NobbyOnCars Try an Eland test with both systems and you notice a huge differences. I'm lucky I've some driving skills but my heart bounced in my throat.
Just discovered this ! Did you know that Skoda Werk, Mlada Boleslav made heavy field mortars during WW1 and tanks for the Czech army between the wars , which were regarded as the best tanks in Europe in their time ? In fact the Nasties made a beeline to take over Skoda Werk after they occupied Czechoslovakia and these tanks were used on the Eastern front.
Got mine, 1,5 style, petrol manual gearbox last month, I love it! Titan blue colour is great but also the lava blue like the one in this video is also nice.
I have a 2016 estate, and my wife has just bought a 2021 Mk4. The infotainment in my car is great, but the new one is taking a lot of getting used to. They’ve removed nearly all the buttons and it’s all on the screen. Unfortunately, it’s not logical like the older ones. I think they are trying to do too much; novelty for the sake of it. The manual, as usual, is so badly written that it is little help. The Mk4 is a nice car, for sure, but I have no plans to upgrade my Mk3. I prefer it in almost every way.
Good review, shame about the adaptor, get a Samsung and its already a standard cable, seems a bit more future proof, love all the features that skoda have, I'm on my 6th fabia but this is something I'd look at next.
Been using Laura (Octavia as it was called in India back in 2012) for about 9 years now. Planning to get this Octavia now. The best part is, they might call the voice and smart control system as “Laura” so that is going to be cool.
I was very skeptical about Skodas before we bought one. The reason being was taxis. Taxi Skoda is most ofter cheap version with not many options. Fist Skoda we bought was 2010 Octavia a5. 2.0 TDi DSG. What impressed me how comfortable the ride was and how rapid the car was with this drivetrain. DSG works perfect, fuel consumption was around 5.5l/100km combined. We sold it at 225k kilometers and the we only had to fix the front suspension once! We changed it to 2012 top range Octavia a5. I mean Webasto, xenon, leather, top multimedia for this car, electric seats. WOW. It has all the features of a premium car, and still is very very economical to own. Amazing vehicle. Recommend it to everyone. Way better than any renault
That dash cam port, genius. Skoda's remind of the things Rolls used to be - Such simple genius touches where they clearly thought of the user and their uses, love it.
Sat in a 202 Rolls a few weeks ago. Mother of jaysus the stuff inside. The carpets were like nothing I've ever stepped in before. The roof headlining with the stars... unreal.
Yep have that engine in a Leon FR estate. All the car you'd ever need. Average 50mpg and I've a heavy right boot. Easily get 60 on a long N road run. Plenty mid range acceleration. Prob similar size interior to that octavia (well who actually sits in the back seat, bar kids). Prefer the Leon in a bend but I'm sure the new octavia is fine. Nice review. MPG all day
Even the new 1.5 eTsi can hit 50MPG. VW group is doing great things with their engines lately. Hopefully they'll be as reliable as they are frugal though.....

Have you gone into the settings and turned off the voice part? Not ideal but it will make it stop.
You’ve given it plenty of thought anyway!
im sold, these guys think of everything!
Thanks for the concise, honest review! very well presented :)
Great video thanks super car we nearly brought one few years back . Very nice well made car .
Thanks for checking it out
Have 70 plate sel 2 litre diesel manual. Love it
YOU ARE A GENUINE PERSON THAT'S ALL I CAN SAY.
Hi. I am jealous of your being able to purchase these. They don’t come to US. This reminds me of my love of the VW bugs back in the 1960’s. They seemed so practical compared to to US cars of the time. John. USA
Thanks for looking on John!
I wish I hadn't bought my new Astra. As soon as I've paid for it I will have a look at the Octavia 👍 great review
Brilliant review love your style and congratulations on hitting 10k subscribers
Thank you so much 😀
I'm convinced I'm getting one based on this review. Cheers bud.
Nice review. Love that car!
Thanks for watching!
A lot of car for the money eh!?
Excellent review. It’s the small things that you point out that fascinates. Why doesn’t the Golf VIII get a gas bonnet strut ? It costs a lot more than the Skoda ?
Love your accent !!
First timer : to your show: hello from Australia: Skoda: are getting a foot hold : down here : and gaining a lot of respect:
I like: the way they do things: I am a big fan of the Superb Estate: I grew up around: and in big wagons: so I guess its genetic:
I enjoyed: your presentation: and your way of doing a review: natural and refreshing: thanks: mate:!
G'Day! Great to have you watching from Australia. Yes, the Superb is really some car when all things are considered.
Looks amazing! And you go into good detail mate great job
Really really good car. I’ve got a mate coming to end of his finance of a Rapid saloon and the family has grown so will be pushing this onto him. Having bought a Kodiaq recently I’m jealous of all the tech but needed the 3XL size versus XL of the Octavia. Nice review 👍
Getting mine in a week from today!
good luck with it!
Very sharp/classy looking car.
Great review too.
I’m glad of the mpg stat too. That will always mean more to me than lt/100km. I still use mpg on the Roadtrip app.
Who knew such a small bit of info would generate so many comments in favour of it! Thanks for watching
Well lt/100 km is for Europe and the rest of the world really MPG is just UK and US. And even then the gallon size is different from each other. So lt/100km is actually universally more clear.
@@Astke I never said it wasn’t. I just said that mpg means more to me.
Great review, proper review, no arsing around 👍.
I've had a 131, 161 and a 191 Octavia doing 70000km a year, never have any trouble. The 191 is due to be replaced soon. Looking forward to picking up my mk4
Thanks Brian!
I had one of the first mark 1 Octavias, and have had two more since then, but I now have a Rapid, which is a great car and does all I want without all the extra electronic gizmos that I don't personally need. Why can't we still buy Rapids in the UK, Skoda? You still seem to sell them in India for example.
that's brand loyalty right there!
You should have way more subscribers. One of the best Car reviewers on TH-cam 👌👌👌
Hitting around 1,000 subs per month currently but yes, gimme all the subs please !! Thanks for watching
Great review Mark. Great car too.
Thanks 👍🏻
great video
Great video! Love my 2019 Octavia and really considering the new model, but miss my Yeti :(
Do it!
Getting 2 ltr demo model next week, can't wait. Great review
Best of luck with it
How good are the base led lights? almost all review are with matrix led. thanks henry
Superb review. Fair, accurate and clearly explained.
Thank you kindly!
great video, i ve seen plenty but some details i ve seen in this video never seen before!!! great work
Thank you Tasos!
It does make the ride a bit smoother alright, I noticed that in the Golf versus Leon.
@@NobbyOnCars Try an Eland test with both systems and you notice a huge differences. I'm lucky I've some driving skills but my heart bounced in my throat.
Great review, thanks! You're putting a really good sales case here :)
Thanks for watching!
Wonderful ascent, goes very well with that car.
Makes me want a skoda but we don't get them here in the states 😕
Ya its a pity .. chekout superb.. its much cooler
The dashcam port did it for me !
Still making 1000 km road trips over some very bad roads in my almost 14 year old Octy 1.9 TDI diesel AT. Tank without a turret.
God bless her!
Great job done!! I enjoyed listening to this review, fairplay!!👏👍😊
I didn’t but you learn something new every day
I love it. I quite like the iv plug in hybrid model .
Got mine, 1,5 style, petrol manual gearbox last month, I love it! Titan blue colour is great but also the lava blue like the one in this video is also nice.
Brilliant review. Currently driving a 2016 Skoda Octavia. Hopefully will be getting one of these in the future. Keep up with the excellent reviews 👍👍👍
Thanks for watching 👍🏻
Brother, the best Octavia was fit with the 1.9 tdi engine.
Too noisy..
Great review thump-up... you earned new subscriber keep on the good reviews...
Thank you
Fab review , (they have slightly restyled Ford Mondeo) will be looking at this for my next car.
Been using Laura (Octavia as it was called in India back in 2012) for about 9 years now. Planning to get this Octavia now.
The best part is, they might call the voice and smart control system as “Laura” so that is going to be cool.
They do call it that alright. Makes some sense now that you’ve explained the car is called Laura
good review nobby. great car with a fantastic legacy.
Thanks! 👍
MPG all day
MPG FTW! :)
Even the new 1.5 eTsi can hit 50MPG. VW group is doing great things with their engines lately. Hopefully they'll be as reliable as they are frugal though.....
When will this model come to India?
Beautiful review for beautiful car ❤️❤️
Definitely the honest review. Great going bro❤️
I would love to watch your review of the new 1.0 Etec dsg versions of this car. Excellent review.
I'm late to get to this review, as ever great and honest. Love that usb in the rear view, great idea. Another 600 and you'll be at the 10k :)
Gonna but a facelift Sportline pretty soon. Can't wait.
Loved your review style! Good work.
Thank you
