It’s time for an all-new hot hatch drag race!
First up we’ve got Mat in the new Volkswagen Golf GTI. With a 2-litre turbocharged petrol engine under the bonnet, it can produce 245hp and 370Nm. On the other side of the track, we have the Octavia vRS. Given it’s also a VW Group car, it’s got the same powertrain as the GTI, which means it’s also got a 2-litre turbo petrol, which also produces 245hp & 370Nm!
In-between the VW Groups we have the Ford Focus ST… And on the face of it, you it looks like the favourite! With a 2.3-litre turbo engine, it can put down 280hp and 420Nm of torque!
But as we’ve seen before in previous carwow drag races, the bigger number isn’t always the best! So what do you think - will the all-new GTI have what it takes to snatch the win? There’s only one way to find out… LET’S RACE!

This would be really cool. Unfortunetly mk1s that are not abused into the ground are hard to come by. They are pretty rare. I own one too and its a shitbox :D Slowly fixing everything on it but I spent like 2 grand on it already and it still isnt done... They were very cheap when they came out so lot of people with no respect to cars bought them and trashed them...

Having driven both the focus and the golf, take them for some cornering.. The golf is pretty good, but hands down the focus will run rings around it. For me, i taken the focus. It was so much better at driver feel and can throw it about a lot better than the golf.. Plus the golf broke down twice in the 2 week test drive. They're not very reliable. I've never had an issue with the focus 18 month in now. Never asked for a thing apart from the regular service. And I have abused it.

Mat, your Škoda pronunciation, is perfect. I know it, cause I'm Czech. Surprised that Focus is the heaviest of them all and that it performed so bad. I expected Focus to beat the Golf at least in some of the scenarious. Kudos to Škoda, big, practical and pretty fast car. Ideal for most people, including families.

As a family man the Octavia wind hands down for me. Boot is massive, interiors nice and well made, front seats are excellent and drive is very decent. Quick enough when you need it and comfy enough with all round great fuel economy!

I’d rather have a Golf it’s more agile and better in corners, the Skoda is nice but not my cup of tea. Also when I’m shopping for a hot hatch big family car and massive boot are never what I’m looking for plus it looks nearly as big as a Passat.

I am thinking at the same Cinderella from your test, the old 2018-2019 Octavia 5E, the 2.0 TSI 190HP, 320Nm that come in both FWD and AWD (Haldex 5) versions.
I tried to find a test like this, but found nothing professional grade.

At least all 5 cylinder models are way under their rated values, probably its the same with this model, the gearbox should close the clutch at second or third gear so that there is not much difference

19" alloys for the Octavia vs. 18" for the Golf. Not a minor difference I should say. I assume the 19" Xtreme is heavier but even if not, it is difficult to start rolling a 19 incher that a pair of 18" alloys. The Octavia is heavier as well. So there you go. Put some 18" Oz Alleggeritas on the Octavia and the Golf is bye-bye ;)

A few years ago, I was lucky enough to have a new company estate car every 6 months. I had BMW, Audi, Volvo, VW, Vauxhall, Peugeot, Renault and Skoda. The Skoda beat all except the BMW which was a 330d M Sport and a very nice car. I had the Audi ( A4 S-Line ) replace one of my Octavia and I was gutted. As I have 3 young children my daily driver is now a Transporter T6, when they are out of their car seats the Octavia VRS May be my next car, or I may try the Superb as that is supposed to be awesome. You can’t get better than being prepared to put your own money down on a vehicle, I can’t recommend the Skoda enough. ( the first time I attended a site in my first Octavia, a sub contractor who drove an M5 as his company car, took a look and went straight to his local VAG Group and ordered an VRS straight away ).

The automatic Ford trans have always been slow as hell in my experience. Adding the turbo lag the ST has just makes it slower. At least for me it‘s a more emotional ride though, more fun

I'll go with the vrs, the sexiest FWD for me,well performing,less pricy, amazing boot space and overall space,just a ECU remap and downpipe and that's a perfect hatch.

The Fabia is the Skoda hatch.

So my 2014 Focus ST that made way less power than the newer one, and i was able to do a better 1/4 mile time? The best I ever got was 13.9...

Would be interesting to see how a manual ST fares in the same test. And use the automatic ST in the same test.
The manual would certainly loose. What’s strange though is the australian video mag where they tested the automatic and manual they for the best run got a 13.9s. So why is it so slow here?
They did however say you had to ”soft” press the throttle at start to have less wheel spin and get best speed. Either way, they got several low 14.xs runs before the 13.9s.
I would guess this result has to do with gear box tuning. The Focus seems pretty fast in the first three gears, then gears become too long and it looses to the VAG cars.
It only has 6 gears available in Sport/Track mode seventh is disabled btw.
VW has been underrating their house figures since the MK4 Gens, clearly they make way more power than advertised
Plus it pulls way harder up top than the focus, because turbo is bigger, just defined from the factory

The Skoda could be a perfect sleeper if you got it tuned as it's capable in stock sharing the GTI platform but with a tune not many people would expect it too be so quick

This VW AG TSI drill sound is weird. I heard it in 1.2 TSI in Fabia when I intense accelerated. First I thought it is a failure, but l later I got, it is the characteristic :D

I'm sure I watched a mk8 Gti dyno video last night and it was pretty much the official HP and torque. It could be that the press cars are not running honest ECUs.
@@milchpuder if it put 245 at the wheels, that means it has more at the crank..
@@milchpuder the ECU could be programmed far more aggressively if launch mode or something similar is engaged. Then if the car is put on dyno the ECU could be programmed to enable GPS, so it knows the car is accelerating when stationary = official power figures.

Could be, but then you introduce the variable of a person shifting. My guess would be a similar result ('15 FoST owner here).

The cars should have the same type and level of fuel otherwise is pointless. Breaking distance can be measured with vbox & then would be fair...

You can actually bypass the soft limiter with a simple dsg trick and there is a video on YT which shows the method (works for manuals too).
Having owned all three their predecessors over the years have to say have to be the ST but manual for me!

Shift times didn't look to good compared to the Skoda and Golf
And its heavier
Torque converter takes out 10-15% torque/Power. Wheel HP should be the Same at all three
Pls make a drag race and/or review of the new bmw 128ti compared to golf gti clubsport etc.
2.3 l turbo in st . It is detuned version of rs. Rs had same 2.3l turbo. Same engine in golf and vrs.

Having driven hot-hatches from both VAG and Ford I predict there's going to be some interesting differences as you were hinting @10:!5
I actually own ford focus st 2017 2.0L ecoboost and i never lost drag race to my friend with golf gti not sure what year he have but i think its 2016. Both cars are practicly stock just removed mufflers nad resonators + added custom bov thats all.
Interestingly, Autocar tested the new BMW 128Ti v Renault Megane RS300 v the Ford ST. In all cross country driving scenarios, the ST was a convincing and clear winner. It had also beaten the Golf GTi previously.
The fact the focus lost to the GTI, when there’s a golf R that’s even faster, shows how bad a move it was for Ford to not do an RS this generation
I lament the loss of the RS too, but may just make financial sense in this era of electrification. Ford may have put all that money into the Mustang Mach E development (which seems to be the only true Tesla Model 3/Y competitor currently).
An mk3 RS would still beat a new golf r though.

Skoda looks awesome plus it’s practical golf has the best performance, but I would take the focus for the manual box, and the overall handling.
i'd have the octavia, had one a few years ago bloody good car. although I do have to add the build quality is a little on the poor side, not had a skoda that didn't have faults from new.

As an everyday driver I have used Skoda Octavia Combi vRS diesel (180hp, 380 Nm). 6 years old, cc. 420.000 km in it. Today was 5.4 liter/100km in mixed road, from 50 km/h to 180km/h. It has had no problem, literraly nothing from the first day till now. I DO not care, what happen in 1/4 mile, in 14.xx second. I use it. That’s all. It would be my next choice. (I change car every 10 years, not every 1-2y. I need minimum 2 years to FEEL every reaction of my car. It is not about money. And yes, every vRS mate say hello with light horn to me, and we are very polite to each other.) I think, 150-250 hp should be enough for everyday driver. Sure, you can buy faster, stonger, much, more expensive fancy cars, but red light stops you every corner.
