  • (Note: If you have positive feelings about the U.S. military, do yourself a favor and stop watching at 5:18.) I wanted to share a "hiccup" involved in filing the U.S. FAFSA (application for college financial aid) as a transgender man: they ask if you are registered with the Selective Service, and I had to upload a copy of my ORIGINAL birth certificate. This worked fine for me, but it brings up some related things that I wanted to rant about!

I remember not so many years ago, trans men were forced to register for the draft to apply for FAFSA, but a lot of guys were able to get out of it because trans people were not allowed to serve. Then we were allowed to serve. Now we aren't again. I'm glad you posted this, because it hasn't been a topic of discussion lately as much as it was a few years ago!

Interesting! I don't know anything about the history of this stuff. Personally, I don't think we should have anything whatsoever to do with the Selective Service as long as people in charge are trying to keep us out of the military. If they don't want me, there's no way I'm going to bow down to follow their rules.

I feel the same way! I also remember there being a "clause" back then that if you were 26 or older you didn't have to register. It's all a big mess.

I learned in college history today that the draft age should stop at 35.You have point over not having to register for selective service when we have transgender troops losing their jobs over the ignorance of transphobic people and we are still having this issue now. thankful for our transgender and active service troops. I have to sign up for FAFSA soon this video covered a lot of surface congrats on going to school thanks! 👍🏼

Thank you! Yes, I am also thankful for our troops and I respect them, even if I don't feel the same about the people in charge of them.

About five years ago I was hearing that upon physically transitioning to male it is important to contact the selective service agency to register with them. By doing that and being approved you will not be surprised when trying to file for FAFSA. It is good you are letting others know about this requirement.
    Good luck with your studies.

I had to do the Selective Service thing and it was an ordeal. But they were very respectful, so that’s nice!! Thanks for sharing!

I feel the same way about a lot of what you discussed. I think it's unfair that only men have to register for selective service and face the possibility of being drafted. I was AFAB, so l did not have to deal with all that, which I'm glad of. If I had to, I probably would have registered, simply as it is the law and not doing so makes one ineligible for so many things. (I'm not sure, if in registering, one has to commit to anything, ie. give an oath that one will serve if drafted? If so, that would change matters, as I won't lie.) But if I been drafted, I don't know what I would do. I might not be able to claim status as a conscientious objector, as there are situations in which I think it is ok or even necessary to kill another person. Whether I could actually bring myself to do so, I don't know. (I'm a vegan; I don't even think it is right to kill animals.) But like you, I wouldn't be willing to give up my right to choose which situations those are, and to blindly follow orders. I don't trust anyone else, especially not our current leaders, to make choices like that for me. In a war, I might be willing to work in a medical capacity but I'm squeamish and have no such training, so that might not work out well. And yet, I realize that some wars have to be fought, to deter tyranny and human rights abuses, etc., so it is rather a dilemma. If I was a soldier in a war, I likely wouldn't have access to high quality information about all the situations I'd find myself in, in order to decide whether killing, bombing, etc. was the best, most moral, course of action. Even people not right in the middle of the war have difficulty getting information about what's really going on, and why, beyond the propaganda. So soldiers have to trust their commanders to make those decisions. But that is trust I don't have, and I don't believe it could be drilled into me either.

I forgot to mention, even though I think it is unfair the way it is currently set up, I'm actually against anyone, male or female or trans, having to register for selective service, or being drafted to join the military. Joining the military should be voluntary. But as with everything else, dilemmas remain. Even if all soldiers join voluntarily, that still doesn't mean the wars are just.

Sorry I didn't reply sooner! Well, there is really nothing to update about my chest - it is just the same as the last update I did, except a tiny bit more hair. :)
