      @@PhilMachi It was exactly the sort of thing I like to see. It’s great to get so many of the team’s thoughts and recollections about the show documented because some of them are no longer with us. It really drums home the fact that an army of people were responsible for this show, and it wasn’t just Bruce Timm and Paul Dini.

      @@PhilMachi Do you have any idea how long I've been wanting to hear these recordings? 😂 For real, you are awesome for putting this out there.
      I would kinda love of these recordings could be incorporated into an animated DC movie set in the Multiverse in some capacity. Retroactively make Tim Curry a legit Joker in his own right. It'll never happen but it would be sweet.

    Thanks for posting Tim Curry's version of Joker. I think Mark Hamill's performance as Joker is the best. Hamill's Joker can be fun, hilarious, creepy, and threatening at the same time. So we are able to see both threatening and hilarious clownish aspects of Joker through Mark Hamill.
    Tim Curry's Joker only gives the impression that it is just a creepy guy dressing up as a clown. There is a lack of humor with Tim Curry's Joker.
    I am also trying to find out Batman Animated Series unproduced episode "The Count and the Countess." I think the voiceworks for this episode were done for this episode. But this episode was never finished and it was replaced by Episode "See no Evil" written by Story Editor/Writer Martin Pasko.
    I think it was Buzz Dixon (who wrote the teleplay for Batman TAS Episode "Cat Scratch Fever") who wrote the script "The Count and the Countess."
    In 2010 interview with Lone Fan, Buzz said " I actually wrote three scripts for “Batman: The Animated Series”. The first involved a brand new pair of villains, a father and daughter Eurotrash team. That got me hired, but the script was eventually put aside when they decided to concentrate on established trademarked licensed characters. The next script was “Cat Scratch Fever” which was based on a story by Sean Catherine Derek; it was good and fun and marked the beginning of Catwoman’s gradual turn from 100% bad to half and half. The third script was “Beware The Creeper” which Steve Gerber asked me to help out on since he was facing deadline pressure."
    With Episode POV, I saw this information (below) at IMDb trivia section of this episode.
    "Originally, Montoya, Bullock and Wilkes told their accounts of what happened in a coffee shop instead of police headquarters, and their careers weren't on the line. The episode proper also would have delved into Bullock and Montoya's backstories, revealing that Bullock was once a high school sports star with an abusive father who drilled respect for the rules into him, explaining his intense dislike of Batman, while Montoya would have been revealed to grow up in Crime Alley and is a reformed teenage punk, who cleaned up her act and dedicated her life to helping people. Their backstories were axed by the censors, and were one of the main reasons why writer/story editor Sean Catherine Derek left the show in frustration."

    • @PhilMachi
      @PhilMachi  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      How very interesting! Thank you for sharing all these tidbits here in the comments. "The Count and the Countess" I seem to remember came up in conversation for this documentary, but we didn't dive too much into it. There is definitely a nice list of unproduced scripts that could always find a way into animation -- one way or another. Also, I believe in his own way over time, Curry would have grown into and evolved the character of Joker just as Hamill fleshed him out through the years. I absolutely adore the version we have but there is part of my curiosity that wonders what Curry would have done with the role had he landed it.

    • @josephpendleton4927
      @josephpendleton4927 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@PhilMachi You are welcome. I am also interested in seeing how the original scripts of POV, The Underdwellers, and The Forgotten looked like. After all, the scripts of these episodes were altered heavily in the final cut. I hope someday I will be able to see them.
      With me, I cannot see Tim Curry evolving the character of Joker throughout time since Tim Curry's Joker is only creepy. With Mark Hamill's Joker, it was funny, hilarious, creepy, and threatening from the very beginning starting with the episode "Christmas with Joker." But that's just me.
      Anyway, thanks a lot for making this documentary. It was interesting.

      It was my absolute joy and boyhood-dream-come-true to direct this documentary, Steven. One of my goals during production was to keep in mind things like "Heart of Batman" and all the tidbits I had seen and read through the years (like in Chip Kidd's book) -- the goal was to honor the series, honor its people, and show the longtime fans something they've never seen before.

    great doc on the experience. beautiful work all round! B:TAS was such a huge part of my childhood, and was the main reason i was a Batman fanatic in the first place. i did want to respectfully touch on something someone else pointed out below, the notable absence of Mark Hamill. i can understand if he wasn't free for the interview, but it seems as if all mention of him has been edited out of the entire doc? with more emphasis placed on Harley instead. kinda feels like a key piece of this whole thing is missing. just curious was there any specific reason for Mark's absence? otherwise it was a fun emotional nostalgic ride. when Kevin started talking about his scene in Phantasm at the graveyard, and the inspiration behind it, i couldn't help but tear up for both the man and the character. this show was powerful stuff. thx again for the hard work!

    • @PhilMachi
      @PhilMachi  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you very much indeed for sharing your feelings and emotions on both the series and the doc! Your respect and candor are also appreciated.
      17 people were kind and gracious enough to give their time to me so I could produce something to honor the BTAS. That being said, I was absolutely in talks with additional people: some of whom had scheduling conflicts and some whom (for whatever reason) I was never able to reach in the first place.
      One of my goals with this production was to show something that hadn't already been covered before in previous documentaries or DVD bonus features. I wanted to show what I had available and not draw attention to what was not.
      While it is understandable to desire more and wonder what could else have been, I prefer to focus on things that did happen - like how this was Paul Williams' first ever appearance in a professional production regarding his role as Penguin.
      Perhaps someday I'll be able to interview Mark as well. Harley's segment got maybe 1 additional minute of time but that was due to my wanting to include Kevin Altieri's graphic novel work (which to me is more about Kevin than it is Harley). For what it's worth, I feel like Mark IS part of my "philm" as he is fondly spoken about via his colleagues where appropriate ...but there is only so much time and yet so much to cover.
      Thanks again! 🦇
