- We had an absolute blast the last few days cranking the COLDSHOT base up to 400 MOA and slinging some lead at 1000 yards with the AirForce Airguns Texan .50. cal big bore airgun. Sorry DonnyFL! I had to remove the Ronin Suppressor just to see the target over the end of the barrel.
So I just got back from a fricken EPIC marathon of big bore airgun shooting at the Marksmanship Training Center in Lake City, Michigan. I pulled triggers more times and shot more big bore Airgun poundage of lead in the last two days than ever in my life! That is saying a lot because I have slung some serious lead in a day or two with my AirForce Texans, but nothing like the last 48 hours.
Chad Simon and Caleb Simon from Lethal Air were in Michigan for work so we decided to meet up for some shenanigans. But this trip turned into a down right big bore airgun throw down and advocacy effort to introduce a bunch of shooters to the sport we love.
In this video, we demonstrate the raw power of big bores, test some new ammo, and had a great conversation to share with you all if you are considering getting into big bore and specifically Deer hunting considerations with sub 300 FPE big bore airguns.

@@slowpokeairgunner4027 .25 LOL it wont do a thing. It doesnt even penetrate a car door my guy. It sure wouldnt be fun to get shot with and it will probably stick in your skin but deadly ? I dont think so. Headshot ? Maybe if placed correctly.
@@momsom321 Sounds like you need to do a little homework and testing before spreading false info. A .25 al will do obviously much more damage than you are pretending, that's just a really childish and egotistical answer coming from obvious ignorance. It will drop a deer with a headshot no problem with the right placement, and a coyote with a body shot with complete passthrough no problem, and you're trying to tell me it'll just stick in your skin. You have a lot to learn man.

I just can't get enough of this stuff! Love it. I am happy that people such as yourselves are noting the evolution of the airgun from what it was to where they are going.
Air guns have, other than a period of mistaken identity 1890-1990 (blame it on the "tin plate" Crossman's, Diana's, and Beeman's that were under every Christmas tree giving air guns a bad reputation lol), always been pretty potent. Otherwise, why would people spend the money on them when firearms are cheaper and more convenient. The "super-duper powerful" production air rifles on the market today are only a smidge more powerful than the rifles developed in the 1770's (mostly due to us having better materials and mfg to harness higher pressures).
Every company acts like they're doing something never done before, but the reality is that guys with more-or-less Late Medieval Period technology were doing it first.

Excellent video! As the owner of an airforce texan cf in 45 caliber that started with the shin sung career Dragon Slayer .50 caliber in 2008 I can attest to the advancements made in the big bore air rifles. In 2008 other than the Korean made rifles the only other choices were custom built rifles by people like big bore Bob and Dennis Quackenbush who both made excellent rifles but had waiting lists of over a year at least. Being able to have off the shelf multiple choices from several different manufacturers has really changed the sport. Like you said when I first started hunting with the dragon slayer I was very cautious with my shot placement due to the foot pounds of energy that the rifle produced but that's changed quite a bit now that I'm using the Texan which makes 3 times the muzzle energy. I'm also looking forward to getting into extreme long range shooting with the Texan. Can't wait until your next video in this quickly advancing sport.

Excellent video, I was never aware of the incredible speed and power of these these rifle's. The deer 🦌 that took the broadside shot really took notice of the powerful energy of the Texan, but how does it work on tough old hogs???

Idaho allows big game hunting with PCP air rifles, but have the minimum requirements: for i.e. 35 cal up for mule deer with a minimum of 350 FPE at muzzle and .45 cal for elk, moose and big horn sheep also with a minimum of 350 FPE. A .35 cal FX Impact is out of a league for hunting big game in Idaho, Air Force and up stuff.

Honestly 350 ftlbs is a bit low in my opinion for an air rifle. That's like trying to hunt deer with a 9mm. Yeah it will get the job done, but without perfect shot placement that deer will probably suffer. The relatively low velocity on most stock big bore air rifles means much less hydraulic shock. They have momentum for days though. You could probably kill just about anything on the planet with modern pneumatic weapons, but it's a matter of making sure that it doesn't suffer. That's why a lot of states can't make up there mind about the requirements.
Great job guys! Very nice presentation and demo to introduce more people into airgun hobby. I definitely go with SuperTex 50 for power and ethical hunting among all my other airguns. Lethal Air and AAO have the best resources for powerful airguns out there. Always read more and know your local laws. Shoot safe and stay safe.

I just read in one of your video's you're an Army Vet. Kudos! U.S. Army 1971-1977 on this end. Did basic at Lewis, AIT at Gordon, went to jump school at Benning, then to Bragg, then overseas, came to the States to Ft. Lewis where I ETS'ed.
There's a shootgun slug called a gatekeeper that all copper it kicks butt.
It would be cool as a air gun slug.

Have you tried the umarex hammer .50 cal
Western airguns bushbuck .45, extreme big bore .357, or an AEA Zeuss! Perhaps an Evanex Rex p if you want to get in close.
Also that don cothran pistol you had on your channel was awesome. Have you gotten a dear with it yet?

is that what they are now calling my " COUGH " syrup? as my concerns for my health are what is the weight of an AIR FORCE TEXAN weigh in a hunting set up? i would love to be able to shoot 1,000 yards again have not been able to do that in years now
They are cool from the factory, but you can make them into monsters. Like modern .45-70 power. There is a farmer out here who has one of the 50 cal texans that is absolutely ridiculous. He runs it at 5500 psi but he uses air and helium mix when he wants the most power out of it. Thing is throwing 700 grain hollow points at like 1100-1200 FPS with the helium mix. Thats like 1900 ftlbs out of a damn pneumatic rifle. It's really crazy when you think about the fact that firearms operate at tens of thousands of PSI, but an air rifle can make that much energy with a 6th of the pressure.
Yooo guys i have a question ,i am really into big bore airguns and i am thinking spending 1500 euros on one ,the one that picked my eye was the airforce texan either 45 or 50 cal ,i mainly want to use it for long range plicking and to hunt wild boar you think you can suggest something better ?keep in mind European wild boar is in the weight range of 80-250 kg, you think a 45 wil make the job done or should i stick to the 50?

The .457 is a great option! The full length version is my go-to or the .50 cal carbine.

If the air rifle slug makes a channel like wound then make the slugs like the copper bullets in the video but made of lead so they can open up and brake off like those bullets
First I've heard of Lehigh air rounds. That makes me happy. I think. Airguns are the best kept secret these days. I can't make up my mind if it should stay that way. It's bad enough what they're trying to do with 2A and our powder burners.

Sadly the state of maine still doesn't allow the use of air rifles for hunting of any size game.
Edit= also on a different note, maine also doesn't allow felons to own air rifles (any size, even a little .177 daisy red rider) nor does the state allow felons own black powder guns of any size, and yup you guessed it, cross bows also not allowed and even a simple bow and arrow is only allowed for felons after they take an extensive hunting class and are then only allowed to take the bow oit of the house for hunting durring hunting season and after a hunting license for that particular game has been acquired.
I've seen a video of a guy with a airforce Texas 45cal in Coalinga California shoot 1000+ yards at 2 litter bottle, video was 2 years ago.my still be on TH-cam

We need to get game hunting legal here in Washington state. Can't hunt anything bigger than a raccoon... I want to use my Airforce Texan 457. I'll talk to my father about going out to Idaho. (I've never actually hunted before he has a lot)

Its shit how over here in England you can buy an air rifle costing £100 or £1000 but it always has to be under the 12 ft lbs power level
i have the Umarex 50 caliber AMAZING! POWER! the tank hooked up to the rifle in this video takes away the realizim !! just saying it is a turn off!!
Realism? It’s called regulated tethering and it’s how big bore Airgunners normally shoot at the range. Without being tethered and regulated there is now way we would be able to get shot to shot velocity consistency to attempt shots like this.
Everyone should be required to go on a successful hunt at least once and dispatch/consume a deer or hog it should be a mandatory requirement to pass high school so people understand where meat comes from... society has gotten so disconnected and out of touch with reality it's crazy.The airguns are awesome you guys a great job on this video....but I think I'll be sticking with my 30-06
I totally agree! It was a core part of my childhood. My dad told me stories about how he would snare rabbits for food in the winter when he was in Graduate School at Central Michigan University. That is how he fed himself to save money. It is a way of life.
