Some will say bible verses or teaching in the bible. This is not to say that the bible is bad but things have its limits and there are things you should not do and there are people whom you should not help and are not deserving of your kindness. These are the people you should always avoid but still people who does not understand you why you stop helping them and become rude to them will always say teaching in the bible thou shall help others and expect nothing in return. There is a huge difference between people who are justifiably sad (for instance someone who is grieving the recent loss of a loved one) and people who are sad and lonely FOR NO REASON. There is a huge difference between people who are justifiably sad (for instance someone who is grieving the recent loss of a loved one) and people who are sad and lonely FOR NO REASON. The latter cannot be helped because their sadness is imaginary and has no basis in fact. Such people are best avoided since all they can offer to the world is negative energy.

Chances are, at least half of the people you know are in one of these categories. Unless hanging out with no one is preferable...but how are we to know if we are not ourselves part of one of these categories? (just playing devil's advocate) I know when I was very depressed I felt abandoned, and I would have loved to have someone to give me encouragement about my troubles and include me in things. Maybe better advice is to say, "don't try to help someone with their troubles, if they don't actually want to improve things." But most people have many troubles, if they are being truly honest. A world where we are not free to discuss our troubles honestly is not very nice.

I think not helping sad and character less is cruel. Both conditions can make people change and when one sees them they may have been in these states for so long. I feel one has to be careful to protect oneself and help without expecting tanything in return.
As long as their sadness doesn't affect you. You can help them by keeping them at arms length and show them the way out of their madness
