i can appreciate lars as the foil to the magical boy that is steven, he's an interesting character and pretty realistic for a teen with self destructive tendencies and self esteem issues

I can understand not liking Lars, but his feelings on the island were pretty understandable imo when you consider that he's not used to all that magic stuff. He was just a bit who didn't want to risk death. If anything, Sadie should have been more worried about everything

The crystal gems' mission is to protect the earth. So all their missions are on Earth. Rebecca has stated that most people are aware of the gem's exsistence, they just stray away from it. This world also has an alternative history. One thing you've already caught on is that they have different foods, like the Durian juice. It's all part of the worldbuilding.
note that the gems kind of suck as parents lol. they keep taking steven on dangerous missions (that his dad didnt even know about, as he said in the Lapis episodes), pearl tried to take him into space, they have a pattern of making steven have to fix their problems, and they didnt notice that he went missing for, like, a week in the sadie and lars episode

I'm pretty sure steven got raised by greg until
he was like 10 or something, then they decided to let him live with the gems (most likely because they're not sure how to raise a hybrid (half human half gem) so they decided he might aswell start learning about his gem half now)
THIS SHOW IS GONNA GET JUICY
The local, Earth-bound warp network has been always operational. It's the part that goes off-planet that's non-operational.
All the gems have their own musical theme and instrumentation, and you definitely can figure out one things by listening before the visuals come in.
You do realize that Sadie trapped Lars on this dangerous island away from his home and family. Against his will just to hit on him. She doesn't deserve.

i feel like the whole greg is ”dead beat dad” kinda tone is a bit much. not that you said that but so you know he is also co-parenting steven. it’s not only the gems who raised steven. it will be too much of a spoiler if i say further on but he’s a great dad who’s trying his best and is always there no matter what.
Okay but look at it from THIS perspective.
You're goofing off at work a bit. You get told to go on a 'vacation' to somewhere nice, just to find out there's a creature, that an entire team of superhuman girls came together to fight, is on the island. You get stranded of no fault of your own. You build up frustration and thoughts of how you might die at this place. You start accepting it a little and having a bit of fun. You start falling in love with your best friend. You end up having a moment and kissing her. A giant invisible monster shows up to kill you. You find out the person you had a moment with you was the reason you were stranded in the first place. Now, all the good memories seem fake and planned by her and all the shit memories are HER fault. She then starts scolding and hitting you for rightfully being upset. She accidentally pushes you down to the monster that's trying to kill you, then she kills the monster.
I mean it was her responsibility since she put him in that position. Hell, if I was Lars, I'd straight up just end the relationship at being coworkers or even quit my job.
Think of what Lars did bad, he said Steven's mom was 'weird' because the plants eating his friends alive were her fault.
He almost died and ended it with just saying Rose was weird.
Next case, he lied to get out of work. He ended up with actual fucking flames spewing from his mouth.

NEXT CASE, he made fun of Steven being stuck in a bubble because of his own mistake. I see no problem in that, everyone makes fun of their friends (Yes I know 'friend').

The Gems have always been going to various places on Earth. Steven Universe-Earth is a much, much weirder place than our Earth.
in that last ep', flip the sexes, and see if you still feel the same. consider the following:
adult male boss, finds himself on an island with a teenager female subordinate that he kinda likes, but she has never really given him the time on day. so he makes sure they get trapped there, until the younger girl starts showing some affection to him.
now back to "reality", is Lars really the bad guy here?

true, she's not as an adult as the parents are in the show, but she is the manager of that shop. I think at some point it was said that she worked there for 4 years, making her about 20, if not 22.
and even if she and lars are the same age, she's the more "mature" (responsible) one.
she's given a "pass" because she's portrayed as weak, but most of her weakness is self induced (just fire lars, and get someone else, instead of doing all the work for him).

There are only the twomof them ever working there,and he sometimes doesn't come. She opens up the place in the morning, and she gave steven the instruction vid when he (steven) wanted to help her there.

I'm not so good at fully rewatching shows, I'll skip episodes and such, but this channel/series is helping me rewatch SU with it being fresh. It's like I'm showing one of my favourite shows to a friend 🤗
Of course I like Lars, he's one of my favourite characters. Lars and the Cool Kids is what solidified him as a good character to me

Everyplace you've seen Steven & the Gems go to has been on Earth. Remember, the Crystal Gems have been on Earth for a long time and they've definitely had an impact on Earth culture, history, and so on. The show doesn't really delve into it, but you will notice stuff if you watch/listen for details.

Lars is a great character that I love to hate, but save his selfish moments, I think he had a pretty understandable reaction in the last episode. He wanted to leave as soon as he heard about a dangerous gem creature to an island Steven shouldn't have even brought them to, and as someone not used to magic and no means to defend himself against the unknown danger there, he has every right to be upset about Sadie making decisions for him on the excuse that she knows best. He was an actual victim in this situation here, regardless of the intentions. Steven's a kid who didn't understand just how dangerous the situations he brought his vulnerable friends into, and just wanted to show off. Sadie was fully aware she was sabtoging. Biggest L goes to her tbcfhwy.

In Lar's defense, it is messed up that Sadie willingly trapped him AND Steven on an island just so she could have Lars to herself.
He was scared and homesick, and thought there was no hope for them, and she allowed that because it forced him to get close to her out of _loneliness_ . He had no one else to lean on and share intimacy with EXCEPT her, and she just accepted that because it's what she wanted.
Lars has his slip-ups and bad attitudes, but Sadie isn't much good for him either.

At this point in the show it probably seems that way since the audience barely gets to see Steven with Greg and Greg we aren’t told why Greg isn’t living with Steven.

@@Scootx it always felt like Pearl was only thinking of herself in this one. Steven is a gem but also a human child and she was fully prepared to take him away from everything he had known. Greg freaking out always hit me pretty hard. Pearl does care about Steven she just doesn't understand the human part.
@@Higsby100 Well... it's pretty clear Pearl craves to show Steven a part of her story, of her culture and that's in space. She eventually came to her senses though.
