Since Peridot got poofed, she's been feeling helpless, useless, and "small". She's struggling to keep up her confidence and her worth and using her arrogance to do so. Her beliefs and her confident mask are crumbling around her. Knowing that she's actually able to do something like be a kind and decent person? That's "big".

Its also the first time since being 'captured' that shes felt some sprt of success. And it was for something that PERSONALLY matters to her. Everything before was part of her job. For the first time, shes been acknowledged and thanked for something that she did for not just for herself or homeworld. She finally did something to help her own and anothers self worth and not because it was her "purpose" or "orders". Shes her own gem.
The lyrics in Do it For Him actually hint at Pearls' purpose, "deep down you know you weren't built for fighting"

Pearl being a servant that broke out of her role to reinvent herself, garnet being a fusion, and amethyst emerging late are why during “the return” jasper calls pearl “some lost defective pearl” garnet a “shameless display” and amethyst a “puny over cooked runt”
Also “Quartz” is a gemstone term used to help classify gems in real life. amethyst, rose, and jasper are all in the Quartz “family” which is why In the show they there treated the same and share similar looks tall,broad,strong, long hair etc

Pearl said she LEARNED to be a knight, but it isn't something expected of her when she was loyal to Homeworld.
Even though Pearl took an L in the first episode, her punching Peridot is one of the biggest W's in the whole series.
Also I love the ending of Too Far. It's like one of those "morals for little kids" at the end but coming from Peridot, her saying apologizing made her feel big is such a nice moment.
Yeah I love when she said “big” it has many meanings to it that fit her perfect in that situation.
Crystals are often made of the same stuff but may look different depending on the impurities like iron, manganese, copper and sometimes radiation. For example rose quartz, amethyst, citrine and smoky quartz are all types of quartzes.
Quartz is a mineral - a bunch of molecules, in this case silicone dioxide (silica, yes like what you see in packets to absorb moisture). When you think of crystals, like hippie crystals, you probably are picturing a type of quartz. Quartz is also found in sand, and if you think of the glassy (not metallic shiny - that's mica) parts of granite.
Silica on its own is transparent (think crystal balls) for clear quartz, so it is impurities or trace elements that bestow color. Before election-microscopes or the scientific method, people named rocks, crystals and gems based on appearance - so we have amethyst, jasper, agate, onyx, chrysoprase, and chalcedony as different names even though they are all types of quartz chemically. And in another comment I made for another episode - sapphire and ruby are types of corundum.
(This isn't a spoiler because it was actually said early on in the show) jasper explained exactly how they view fusions in the season 1 finale "fusion is just a cheap tactic to make weak gems stronger." But there's a little more to their disliking fusions than that. But I won't spoil it for you
Honestly? Huge SU fan, but I never made the connection that Peridot's initial interest in gaining Amethyst's approval likely was deeply rooted in her subservience to authority. Been really enjoying your connections of the (Peri)dots in your reactions. Both the insightful ones and the ones that miss their mark--they both show that you're genuinely invested. And not a spoiler, but a quartz is simply a type of mineral. To use an animal analogy, it would be like saying they are all canines. There's lots of breeds of dog, but they are all closely related. In much the same way there are several gems and rocks that are all types of quartz.
Quartzes are a family of gems, encompassing Agates, Amethysts, Jaspers, and many others. They are military gems.
A fun fact is that there are also a lot of quartz gems that have "quartz" in their name. Rose quartz is a real gemstone in real life (pretty much all of the gems in the show are gemstones in real life). Similarly, rainbow quartz, the fusion of pearl and rose from that earlier episode, is a real quartz gem in real life
Yeah, Pearl said back in Sworn to the Sword that the concept of a "knight" is something she learned on Earth.
People who are prejudiced tend to assume that someone was "meant" to be a certain way because of what they are. The interesting thing about the Gems is that they're literally designed and intended to be a certain way, designed to soldiers or servants for example.
And even in a species where people have literal designed purposes, they can still rebel and act against their design. The world building is so interesting in this show.
As to why amethyst looks different in that episode;
Rebecca Sugar, the shows creator, gave the storyboard team a lot of freedom to express bits of their own art styles in the show, or TLDR story boarders were allowed to go “off model” when drawing the characters as long as you could tell which character it was.
A lot of times you can tell which member of the “Crewniverse” drew the boards that were sent to animation in Korea based on the art style :-)

Quartz is just a type of rock crystal where the crystals that make it up are very small and irregular, making it look “smooth” when light falls on it. The most common type of quartz is that milky white stone you find on playgrounds sometimes, but there are also a lot of quartz gemstones, like amethyst, jasper, and rose quartz.
I'm so glad you got to this episode because I've been biting my tongue since s2e06.
What's remarkable about Pearl is that NOTHING about her was designed to fight. And it's such a great emblem of the promise of Earth to the Crystal Gems; being free to chose one's path, rather than doing what you are told.
I recommend going back to the 'Do it for Him' song and listen to it with this in mind.
Quartz is a classification of a bunch of types of crystals that include Amethysts uwu
To be clear, in real life, quartz is a general category of gemstone, with a whole bunch of subcategories. Four of the Gems you've met - Rose Quartz, Rainbow Quartz, Amethyst, and Jasper - are all types of quartz. There's others, too, like onyx, citrine, chalcedony, or smoky quartz, but all of them are crystalline silicon dioxide.
Without getting spoilery:
Remember the big Homeworld Gem warrior who attacked Rose Quartz in Pearl's flashback back in "Sworn to the Sword"? That's what an Amethyst is supposed to be, like Rose Quartz and Jasper.
Gem society is almost literally stratified.
Amethyst's hair: This was a trademark style of boarder Lauren Zuke. Amethyst's standard model hair is smoothly dome-like on top curling into locks further down, but Zuke liked to have "horns" sticking out near the top, with Amethyst's hair having more body near the top than the standard model.
Pearl acting as a servant is probably inspired by the Rose Bride from the show called "Revolutionary Girl Utena", actually alot of Steven Universe is inspired by Utena, including Pearl's fencing
Really glad he got to these episodes 'cause now we can recommend him to look back on things like the Do It For Her song lyrics ("Deep down, you know you weren't built for fighting") & what Pearl specifically told Garnet in the episode where they finally made up ("I'm just a pearl, I need someone to tell me what to do.")
One thing I ‘ll always love about Pearl is that shes the very first pearl to be liberated from homeworld and just the first pearl to fight, speak her mind, choose her own purpose. I love her. She fought for her independence
Pretty sure from now on the ending visuals will be based on where the group is at that moment, so if they're at the barn you will see the barn, if they're at home you will see their home etc.

The hang up that Homeworld gems have about fusions like Garnet is that they are "unnatural". There are gems that are made to fuse but only with the same type of gem - Garnet being a fusion of 2 different gems is seen as an abomination to Homeworld gems.

Fusions are only used for wars and weapons in gemculture so Garnet just normally walking around to peridot is like holding a big ass Cannon for no reason when there's no fighting going around and amethyst was supposed to look like Jasper a high ranked soldier but since she was premature she's shorter and weaker but she still a quartz technically so that's why peridot thinks high of her

On Homeworld, fusion only happens between gems of the same type, and only for combat purposes. It's not that Peridot doesn't like fusion, she's just not used to seeing it for any other purpose than that and she doesn't understand why, which in turn makes her uncomfortable because before she came to Earth she thought she understood everything about gems. In her mind that's what she was made for and learning that she didn't know as much as she thought made her feel like a failure, like she wasn't fulfilling her "purpose."
The "big" comment at the end is also important because earlier in the episode after she hurt Amethyst's feelings, she said the way Amethyst was being so cold towards her made her feel "smaller," which is ironic because the reason Amethyst was upset is because Peridot told her she was basically a runt and now that's how she felt. She started to understand how what she said could have been hurtful, so when she was able to apologize and be forgiven she started to feel the opposite of how she felt before, so..."big."
some of the changes you’ve mentioned (amathysts hair changing, i think something about pearls face one episode..?) is from diffrent animators ans styles/models being used! there’s some references of all the different animators details floating around

Amenthysts, Jaspers, are all tipes of Quartz irl, like Rose QUARTZ. in other words amethyst should look more like this two.

amethysts hair looks different because there are a few different animators that worked on the show! amethysts hair looking like that is one of them, theres one that always does the far away shots with the tiny chibi looking versions of the characters, i know someone has both of ames eyes visible sometimes... etc. i cant remember the breakdown of all the different styles each animator has? but i love how amethysts hair looks here

what they meant with the "whos a gem stuff" is amythist is the only pure type of gem compared to the other two, a quartz is a type of natural crystal, others include rose and jasper. However a pearl is not a ground based gem, a pearl comes from an oyster. I’ll refrain from commenting anything factual about the show going forward in these videos, and start commenting only on events in previous episodes if they come back to the forefront later on. "Quartz" is, in real life, a large class of Gemstones made from Silicone and Oxygen. Pure Gems with that structure are colorless and transparent. So in order to get their colors, small impurities in the crystal lattice exist. For instance, for Amethysts the impurity is Iron. For Rose Quartzes it's Titanium. Different atoms in different states give a large variety of colors.
Crystal size also matters. Amethysts are large crystals. But there also are microcrystaline Quartzes such as Jaspers, where the individual crystals are microscopic.
There are hundreds of types of Quartz if not thousands. It's quite a diverse set of Gems.
Other big groups of Gemstones are Feldspars or Garnets or Sapphires (in real life, rubies are just red variants of sapphires. Other color variations exist)
IRL Pearls also aren't technically Gemstones as they are made in clams.
AFAIK Feldspars are the most abundant type of rock on Earth, with Quartzes in second place.

Just to clarify (even though you probably already figured it out) Peridot isn't necessarily against fusion. The Gems' home planet itself isn't necessarily against fusion. They're against _cross-gem fusion_ (fusion between 2 or more different types of gems). Also they see no point in being fused all the time and only use fusion for combat

The answer to your inquiry about Homeworld's views on fusion will be answered in a much later episode, so now's not the time to know exactly why Peridot is uncomfortable around Garnet.
As for your question about what a quartz is, a quartz isn't one specific gemstone, it's a "category" of gem. A good way of looking at it is that a quartz is a soldier in some military. But what type of soldier? Infantry? Artillery? Special Ops? These would be what you specify for specific types of Quartz. Amethyst is just one type of quartz out of many.
so amethyst is supposed to be a soldier, pearl is a servant, garnet (sapphire and ruby) ruby is a guard for people like sapphire who is a messenger or confidant for the diamonds because she can tell the future.
A quartz in real life is just a mineral, so amethyst is a quartz, Stevens mom Rose is a quartz and so is jasper

They think fusion is tremendously disrespectful they think it’s gross especially if your fusing with different gyms so technically it’s a race thing at least that’s what it seems like to me and since amethyst was born with a defect that counts as a disability that’s why she’s not as big Stephen is a mixed hybrid of rock and human pearl is not a gym at all she’s a I don’t know where the Pearl is because it’s a part of a clan so a piece of shell that’s really what it is a decorative shelf
If you want some real gem insight, look up the actual gems that the characters are. A lot of their character traits , personalities, weapons, ect were based around their actual gem.
