    Great game. A masterpiece. One of the most important games of the last 20 years.

    Wonderfully articulated review. This was a much better explanation of the game then what I've heard from other mainstream reviewers. Thank you!

    i'm gonna play this game for the first time in a few days, but your idea of using few fitting (is this the name?) cards and then you can draw 4 ideas and pick 1 or 2 i think it's a good home rule i will definitely try to improve replayability and different paths every time.

    Thank you for your thoughts on the final product! This has only made me want to get it more, to be sure. And I appreciate your thought on the idea mechanic... I think I'll create a house rule that brings back the prototype idea mechanic. This was an amazing review!

    The part where you mention the sharing of reading the rules vs one person knowing them all and delegating....as you were explaining, it had the reverse effect of making me think the designer's way was intentional and a more interesting (albeit frustrating) first experience. What you explained as a problem, sounded more like a bunch of people in a dire situation not having all the answers and trying to cobble a plan together each with partial knowledge...like the situation would often be in the actual setting.
    I just got the game and am going to play it solo (cuz of covid), but your scenario makes me wish I could play it with everyone coming to it the first time with no one knowing the overall structure. Almost surely ending in dismal failure, but thematically appropriate.

  • @apex403
    @apex403 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I wrapped up my first playthrough where I lost the entire group... an event happened that increased all of their misery by 1, then my lead scavenger was at 3 misery... I drew the FATE card, I didn't have a cigarette, so he "self terminated" .... the other 3x group members found his body, every single one of them failed their empathy roles and ended it :(
    I won't go into spoilers that lead up to this... but honestly, it was a fitting (albeit, EXTREMELY sad) narrative
    I agree with what you said, this game has the potential to make you a better person

    I don´t understand how can you dislike Robinson Crusoe because it is mean, grim and random and love this one. Anyway keep it up! Good review.

    • @rahdo
      @rahdo  5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      RC is a heavier game and also a more challenging co-op. war of mine is more of a fly by the seat of your pants narrative experience.

      While I haven't played Crusoe, I've noticed that there seems to be a divide. Reviewers who like Crusoe don't seem to have positive opinions about TWoM and vice versa. I want to try Crusoe out, but as someone who likes TWoM I'm curious whether or not I'll break the trend.

    I haven't got my copy from the KS yet due to the delays in translations but if I remember correctly the Incidents Expansion brought 3 more of those shorter scenarios with some envelopes with secrets, the Memories expansion brought a booklet which you would use at the start of every game to see what's the history of every character in your shelter previous to the game which could cause some special reality events just for that character, there was some expansion to be used with the nightraids and the exploration phase (tactical maps and such), there was another expansion that adds children to your shelter and reality impacts coming from that (in case that your heart isn't broken already by the game), another expansion brought maps for the sewers that you could explore at night and discover them kind of in a dungeoncrawler way, one with farmers and another one with the heart of the city where the toughtest places to raid at night are but with the army around (more stories to the booklet). So all in all, if they end up selling all those expansions to retail there is a lot more to explore and to add to the game. And I almost forgot the rubble die (with faces of different sizes and unballanced), a die that you roll when you go through the rubble at your house and you can get pretty impresive stuff, but the chances are really, really low (3% if I remember correctly for the best result).

    How can we manually implement the way IDEAS worked in the prototype version to gain more replayability, maybe sacrifying the chapter objetive thing and work ideas the way it was before?. How much deployability do you think we are losing with this new Ideas working system?

    • @rahdo
      @rahdo  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      i'm not one for house ruling things generally, but if you really wanted to change it, i supposed you'd just implement a "draw X and pick Y" whenever you do the idea action (plus at the start of the game). i supposed i'd say you only draw from the basic ideas, and whatever you end up getting, you automatically get the advanced versions of them "for free" as well. Overall this has the high chance of making the game harder (since having access to everything is easier, and the game was increased in difficulty to compensate), but it wouldn't be the end of the world...

  • @sailorpfat

    Do you think it would negatively affect the game at all if we went back to the "draw three pick one" system? If so would you still make it cost an action?

    • @rahdo
      @rahdo  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      the problem would be that since there are no objectives you have to complete, and it could be that you *need* to build some advanced idea to complete the objective, and you could try over and over and never find the idea you want. so i think the "draw 3/pick 1" is incompatible with the chapter objectives (which didn't exist in the old prototype)

    Wow. That's a lot of thoughts! You're making me almost regret trading this one away. For whatever reason this just didn't work for me. I love games that tell a story, but found TWOM punishing to where I felt like I was engaging with the systems, not the story. Maybe I didn't give it enough chances. Ah well. Glad you're finding in it what I was looking for.

    • @muzzynj
      @muzzynj 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well, I did play it 5-6 times and, while there were some great moments during those plays, ended up not being excited about playing it again. I thought about letting it sit and going back to it later to see if my opinion changed, but I wanted to trade while it was hot. I ended up getting three games for it.

    Rahdo don't you think the passing of the Journal is also part of the simulation? Creating some conflict with the players, confusion, making a player with no experience make mistakes meaby kill someone and making the experience player perhaps frustrated ? Dealing in a situation like a war sounds to me this will happen a lot.

    • @rahdo
      @rahdo  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      i guess you can make that argument, but for my money, any frustration players feel should come from the situations they find themselves in, not the rules that are accidentally and (IMO) unintentionally obfuscated

    A lot of reviewers have had a go at TWOM:BG due to the 'depressing theme' of the game. Lightweight snowflakes!
    I'm not pretending it's an easy ride, but it's interesting how many people will play games with armies rampaging across continents, laying siege to cities or a more skirmish like game killing things but then baulk at the thought of this game.
    I think playing in co-op mode rather than character per player is essential. You don't want to become too invested in your own character. It can be very satisfying getting to the end with someone surviving.
    I played it solo first to learn the rule to take a group through. It worked well in solo!

  • @YTEEsenior
    @YTEEsenior 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Wish it had more exploration cards, just so your not cycling through them so many times.

    • @rahdo
      @rahdo  7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      yeah, i can see that, but to me it doesn't feel like you're seeing the same cards over and over because they're always at new locations, so as i'm playing, i'm imagining a flight of stairs as being very different in an apartment complex as opposed to a military base or a super market :)

    Saving after every day is NOT something I'd recommend. Save after chapters yes, but not every day. Some days can literally be under 20-30 minutes.

    • @rahdo
      @rahdo  7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      yup, like i said in the vid, depending on your speed of play (more players = more discussion for longer sessions), i'd say every 2 or 3 days makes sense. or put another way, don't go for longer than 90-150 minutes in a single session. the experience is best stretched out over several reasonable length episodes rather than one crazy long marathon :)

  • @distantbabble

    This review is why I bought the game. Played it for the first time this past weekend and well, the rulebook sucks and completely took us out of the game. Spending half the session looking up rules explanation and clarifications. I will probably give it one more try, but my gaming group wants nothing to do with it after this experience.

      @rahdo  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      sorry it didn't work out for you. was there something in my runthrough that misled or gave an incorrect impression? i talked at length in this very video about how the rules don't work like normal rules and you have to reprogram your expectations. was i wrong? did i mislead yoU?

  • @tigerwalms
    @tigerwalms 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Confused me a bit this one, I'm very surprised you liked this as has a lot of things in you hate from other games but seem fine with in this one. Such as in Time Stories you absolutely detested the thought of having to have two pawns as you wanted to associate yourself with just one person, yet here you think it's completely fine? Also things like dice rolls and random events in other games has been enough for you to dismiss them as not for you and something you hate, yet in this one is fine? Of course if you like the game then you like the game, but I'm surprised to hear you say so, and reasoning seems at odds with you past reviews.

      boardgamegeek.com/video/97953?commentid=6326311#comment6326311
      there are other reason as well... most notably there's a difference between a game that was designed from the group up to have players control multiple characters (ala claustrophobia or war of mine or space hulk death angel) vs one that simply takes the design "shortcut" and tells players to do the extra work rather than the designer.
