      I think this year they need to make an exception at the Emmys, Golden Globes, etc.. and have TWO best actress awards 1 because they both slayed and 2 so we don't have a real Feud between these two extremely talented raw actresses.

      I wouldn't say "admire". More like "respect". Bette Davis said that Joan was very professional and also that she wished she was half as pretty as Joan. Despite all the bitterness and hatred, she did respect Joan as an actress.

      I agree. They were phenomenal actresses, the best in my opinion! But when they were in "Whatever Happened to Baby Jane", I think they brought the best out of each other, because they were always trying to outdo each other. That's just my opinion. It's too bad they couldn't have been friends because they actually had a lot in common. Rest in Peace Ms. Joan Crawford and Ms. Bette Davis (Legends!!!)

    It killed me when I saw Joan's face light up when Bette said they should've been friends. Even as she yelled for Mamacita for champagne, you could see the excitement due to the possibility of new beginnings only to be crushed by a somber reality that she was, indeed, alone.

    Jessica Deserves that Emmy!!! What an incredible performance! Tragic, moving finale. Hope this has given people new insight into Joan as a person not the horrible monster history has made her. I agree it was more of a fictionalized account, but the acting was superb! Lange and Sarandon did magnificent work. Judy Davis, Stanley Tucci, Alfred Molina all fantastic. The quality of the show was top notch. Facts and truth are questionable as you say.

    • @125Dave8
      @125Dave8 7 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      Actually, and while it's clear Crawford was a tough woman who did indeed inforce harsh punishments, it's also more than obvious that Christina exaggerated the events of her childhood to get money and fame out of it.

    • @blueberrycobbler
      @blueberrycobbler 7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      +David Caballero no one will ever know what Christina and her brother went through...we didn't live in their house. Yes, I know there are two other younger children, but her brother backs up her story. Again, know one will ever really know for sure.

    • @ThePharaoho
      @ThePharaoho 7 ปีที่แล้ว +19

      blueberrycobbler I think Christina and Christopher always had a problem with authority and both were very rebellious. Christopher lived a hard life... stealing, getting involved with the wrong crowds, being kicked out of schools. Joan help as much as she could, but then she just gave up. It's funny...Joan and Christina may have clashed while Joan raised her, but they seemed to get along when she was an adult. Joan paid for both her weddings and thought she and Christina were on good terms until she found out about a book being released that Christina tried to keep hush hush until she died. That's why Joan cut her out of her will. Joan was not perfect, but Christina nor Christopher really don't comes across as victims neither.

    I think this is the saddest thing in the world...old age loneliness, and realising the mistakes you could have avoided in your life.dying alone.
    This ending and the shots of Joan alone in her apartment in 1969 with "raindrops keep falling on my head" in the background are the 2 saddest parts in this mini series.

  • @ryanhealey8587
    @ryanhealey8587 7 ปีที่แล้ว +104

    Heartbreaking. To see who they were at the core. Jessica Lange has single handedly shown us a real Joan Crawford and may have undone the camp damage done by Mommie Dearest a very one sided story. Joan would be pleased. She wasn't flawless but she was "the pretty one" who had a horrid childhood and just wanted the respect for her acting Bette had... and true friends.

    • @ryanhealey8587
      @ryanhealey8587 7 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      I totally agree. So much damage was done to Joan Crawford's reputation because of Mommy Dearest, a camp performance even Faye Dunaway regrets now. Jessica Lange masterfully showed us an entirely different and relatable Joan and the pain she felt when the cameras were not rolling. I do believe she'd hug Jessica if she could.

    • @DeepScreenAnalysis
      @DeepScreenAnalysis 7 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Joan Crawford abused Christina and Christopher. On the Donahue show in 1990, Lana Turner's daughter Cheryl confirmed to the audience that Christina was telling the truth and that Hollywood knew, and kept their mouths shut to protect Joan. Cheryl asked Lana why she and the industry just stood by and let Joan abuse those kids and Lana said: "Darling, in this town we rally around each other... we do not admit to faults."

    • @ryanhealey8587
      @ryanhealey8587 7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Unless you have video of Joan Crawford beating her children you do not have right to say as fact "Joan Crawford abused..." Was Lana Turner witness to this abuse? Do you have her notes of the account? I am not saying I believe Joan is innocent. I am simply reminding that a third party claiming something happened they did not see themselves does not make it fact. How about "Lana Turner did relay to her daughter a story similar to what Christina claims"... THAT would be accurate.

    • @raea3588
      @raea3588 7 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      June Alison saw it. It's recounted in her autobiography and in Shirley Temple's as well as other's. And even if it wasn't just because you idolize an amazing actress doesn't mean her daughter didn't deserve to tell the horrific secrets she lived with and be believed!

    • @DinaLydia
      @DinaLydia 7 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      An honestly told story from a child's point of view is always one-sided.
      All they know is the Mommy or Dad they experienced. They'll never know the parent as their friends, co-workers or lovers do, or as the public imagines them to be. So of course it isn't a balanced portrayal. Joan must've been a complicated person with some admirable qualities, but she WAS a control freak and DID abuse Christopher and Christina - that's not disputed by many but fans who want her to be perfect.

    Jessica Lange may have singlehandedly restored Crawford's reputation. For the first time people are exploring who this woman was and not writing her off as the grotesque cartoon character Dunaway played in the 1981 film. Dunaway herself said only God, Joan and Christina will truly know what went on in that childhood. I'm inclined to believe Joan was a tough mother but Christina was equally tough. I find Joan more of a sympathetic character today....a life lived without a lot of personal happiness and fulfillment. No one excuses child abuse but Joan's childhood was hellish and she needed therapy; something unheard of in the early part of the 20th century. She really is a tragic figure. By all accounts she was seriously lonely from the late 1950's(after Al Steele's death) all the way to the end of her own life...almost 20 years. Older people often suffer from intense loneliness and it's a tragedy happening today. Talk to a senior/elderly person and it's amazing to see what they have to offer.

      I still think christina was a spoiled brat, angry about being cut out of the will.... Christina has always claimed she did not care about her mother's estate. Yet,...well, if you TH-cam the interview between Christina Crawford and Joy Behar....... pay attention.... When Joy brings up the exclusion of Christina from the will, and asks her whether her mother and her were getting along before her mother's death, notice how Christina says they were. And then Christina very distinctly talks about 'building their adult relationship back up'----, yet it was "ALL FOR NOTHING "......
      Yep.
      But she wasn't upset at all about the will....(as I roll my eyes)

    I have followed Joan and Bette story for years and been rejoiced about such a high class feud. But this ending, changed the picture for me. In that last scene when Joan says "I hope i've made a new friend" Murphy is trying to say "Hey don't forget, they were humans. Be kinds"

    "we could have been friends" the last word of Bette Davis on What Ever Happened to Baby Jane. This episode was so sad and as Jack Warner said "they'll remember as the legends", and my legends.

    Brilliant, brilliant! To me, legacy is the superlative of all achievements because it's what you leave long after you're gone and it breaks my heart that Joan's is so tarnished while she basically spent her whole life creating hers, starting from the very bottom. I hope Feud, like what it did to me, encourages more people to rediscover Joan Crawford, see past the alarmingly inaccurate Mommie Dearest and some creative license taken by Ryan Murphy, and realize that she is no worse than any actress of her era and deserves the same, if not more, respect. Thanks, Jessica, for letting us see that beneath her Hollywood survival tactics, there is a good person who just wanted to love and be loved.

    This episode truly struck a chord with me. I didn't expect to become so emotional watching it. Every scene was wonderful and to watch Joan Crawford in the beginning adapt to a normal life while "raindrops keep falling on my head" played really stuck with me. I do agree the imaginary party scene was masterful. It truly makes you tear up for both Joan and Bette and what they faced at the end of their careers.

    This last episode made me so sad. It rang so true to how many of us live our lives. Waiting too long to resolve our differences and clear the air. Thinking, "it will happen someday, just not now. Someday we'll sit down together as friends and say the things we've always wanted to say." And all at once, there are no more "somedays."

    • @gaylefranklin
      @gaylefranklin 7 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      I thought about this, too. I guess Sarandon would be the logical choice for Supporting as the show really was Crawford-centric. That's not a complaint, btw. Tho, Ive always been Team Davis, Lange's performance taught me so much about Crawford and a new found respect has happened beacuse of it. I've gone back and watched several Crawford films that, before, I would've easliy skipped. Mommie Dearest, Dunaway and (to some small extent) Davis have shaped my image of Joan Crawford and I'm so happy that Feud smashed that image for once and for all. Here's to Joan!

    • @azaefe
      @azaefe 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well, Saradon was more of a supporter since the writers focused more on Lange's character.

    • @125Dave8
      @125Dave8 7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Sarandon is the obvious choice for supporting. While I loved the show, something that bugged me was the amount of screen time Crawford had only because Lange is Murphy's muse. While Joan Crawford was an interesting woman, this was supposed to be a show about both of them. Hagsploitation is the perfect example of this, the episode revolved way too much around Crawford and it ended up being, in my opinion, the weakest out of the 8.

    This video clip really humanized them, especially with the historical film clips and photos included. They were both larger than life, and in peak form from the 1930's -1950's: right before the Hollywood studio system started breaking down, and ushering in a new era of stars. And they were both born under the sign of Aries.
    An Aries-Aries combination can be incredibly powerful, whether it's in love or friendship. With their shared passion for life and hunger for success, two Aries will make for a dynamic duo, who can really push each other toward greatness.
    It's a shame they never understood this, and bought into the feud that was created around them. They were two sides of the same coin: they approached their craft differently, but I believe they respected each other far more than we know.

    Both Jessica Lange and Susan Sarandon put in some very fine work with this series. Any approach to depicting the experience of these two Hollywood legends could have easily gone down the rabbit hole of caricature. That peril was ever present. But these two actors very skillfully averted anything of the kind by probing deeply enough into the psyche of the characters, those motivations that underpinned the mannerisms for which both Davis and Crawford were well known.
    I'm also glad Ryan Murphy confined the series to something resembling the real-life account of the two stars, and didn't attempt to fictionalize or embellish simply to give the series increased longevity.
    Yet again, Jessica Lange proves why she's been my favorite actor since 1983.
    Next, I would like to see Mr. Murphy develop a spin-off of sorts, depicting the relationship between Olivia De Havilland and her sister, Joan Fontaine.

    This last episode of Feud really got to me. There was something about the scene with Joan Crawford imagining that which was unsaid between her and Bette Davis. Tears streamed down my face.
    Jessica Lange, as Joan, had a way of letting you see the pain, at a particular moment, as revealed in just her face, with no words. She does it in a way that...well...I just cannot quite describe it, but it's devastating the way her performance made me feel.
    Susan Sarandon displayed a reservoir of strength and resolve that was impossibly rigid and made you realize there was something about Bette that could not show you any vulnerability in her real life.
    Both performances together were wrenching and effective.
    What I most learned from watching Feud is that Bette and Joan's rivalry partly stemmed from how they each had an unspoken pain that kept people from seeing more vulnerable sides to themselves.
    Ironically, the pain was often the same, that is, sourced from similar circumstances in their lives and careers.
    In response, they both erected elaborately constructed façades.
    Joan's façade was a bit more porous than Bette's though, at least in this telling of their story.
    That both Joan and Bette were unable to -- or, chose not to (I don't know which) -- let the other get around the walls each built, doomed them to a biting relationship. One seemed destined to be the irresistible force to the other's immovable object.
    The rivalry seems a casualty of how they had to be in their work: uncompromising, strong, independent, and impenetrable women, especially to those who would seek to gain an upper hand.
    Bette and Joane were two women so alike, each a mirror to the other's struggle. And, neither could allow the other to see past the reflection that each projected -- one that revealed little except what the other wanted the other to see.
    Feud, in its final frame, looked back at Joan and Bette on their very first day of shooting "What Ever Happened to Baby Jane." I thought the final two lines in Feud were particularly effective.
    JOAN: Here's what I want said about this picture when all is said and done. I hope I made a new friend.
    BETTE: Me too.
    It's too bad that never really came to pass.
