@@akrenwinkle Maybe not. But she did have masculine features. Also, boys can be called "pretty boy" if they have a baby face etc. I'm not insulting Joan; she wasn't pretty, but her features were good and solid. Like a man. So, she's handsome.

Also, Joan had a somewhat deeper, more relaxed and demure speaking voice. Jessica played her with a high-pitched, shrill tone throughout most of the series.

I absolutely adore these two gorgeous women. Ms. Lange did an excellent job in portraying Ms. Crawford. I believe she really understands her emotional core, past all of the Mommie Dearest stories and everything else.
Lange is in no way shape or form comparable to the real Joan Crawford. She is however actually more comparable to Bette Davis in 1952's The Star - Old and Fat!
I think Jessica has done a wonderful job of bringing light and shade to Joan. There are moments in the show where that 'tough bitch' persona absolutely shines through ("Fuck you, Marty") and then there are times where she allows Joan's vulnerability take the spotlight. Joan was a complicated woman but she was not a cold hard bitch the entire time, I think Jessica softened her to bring the humanity of her to the audience.
MrMalibupj Actually Joan was more poised Yeah, her voice was darkened from all of the smoking and drinking throughout the years. The thing I don't understand about Joan is why she changed her looks...? In the 30's and early 40's she was a beautiful woman...the eyebrows and shoulder pads are atrocious.
Her designer thought exaggerating her naturally large shoulders would de-emphasize them - creating the illusion of small girl in large clothing. The eyebrows were an abused makeup trend at the time. Those brows are drawn on 14 yr old bloggers now. Joan was always butch and grew even more so in her middle years.
MrMalibupj Yeah, Umm I don't think Crawford would have been given the status as great sex symbol and glamour Queen during her younger years against the likes of Garbo, Dietrich, and Norma Shearer if the studio's and public considered her "masculine..."

I'm enjoying the campy feud. Joan Crawford and Bette Davis were both remarkable. Each of them had amazing careers. And I suspect both were ultimately sad individuals, however fascinating. JC's childhood and background was strait out of Dickens. That she became what she became and sustained as long as she did is a triumph; regardless of how she got there. As far as her acting, she did do good work and wasn't just a movie star. Mildred Pierce, A Woman's Face, Possessed, Sudden Fear, The Women, Humoresque - all strong performances. Studied; driven, pure determination & will drove her skill sets to improve especially in the 40's. Bette, was a very talented stage actress who transitioned to film. A great talent less interested in the being the Star on the surface, yet very much the Star in her real life. Lange is good and Sarandon is good. Neither are perfectly cast but they actually are both delivering restrained performances. Btw, for those of you who think SS has not had work done on her face, I would love to sell you some bonds i have in my drawer. you are right about both actresses--they despised each other--and yet they both had a lot in common than either would cared to admit: their work/careers were all that mattered to them. they were sisters under the skin--also they were both aries--fiery and strong willed.
Jesus, why don't you just write a damn book. What a know it all and an arm chair critic who uses hideous syntax. On second thought, forget about the book.
If you are looking for a complete replica of Crawford, go watch her films. It's not about looking or sounding like the legend, but telling & communicating the story effectively and that is why this show is brilliant!
Davis came closest to winning her third Oscar for All About Eve (1950), but because she split votes with costar Ann Baxter, she lost to Judy Holliday. It's still considered a huge upset since All About Eve won Best Picture, and certainly wouldn't have been the success it was without Davis's enormous contribution. 1962 had a very strong list of nominees, but if Bancroft hadn't won the rumor was that Katharine Hepburn had it in the bag - giving what many critics deemed her best performance to date in Long Days Journey into Night. Davis is a hoot in Baby Jane, but the competition was just too stiff. Crawford's acceptance for Bancroft was very malicious indeed.
It's kind of crazy for Bette to think that Joan could have influenced enough people to vote for Ann Bancroft instead of her. Bette Davis was awesome as Baby Jane, but the Academy usually leans toward roles like "Ann Sullivan" in the "Miracle Worker." *And Bancroft was amazing in that part, and just as deserving.
I have watched Feud and the real clips separately, but side-by-side is fantastic! Both Jessica Lange and Susan Sarandon are outstanding in these roles.
Lange and Sarandon are doing excellent work. However, this show has caused me to go back and watch interviews from Crawford and Davis. Neither current actress is actually that close to the originals. OK, Sarandon has similar eyes but other than that they are doing their own impressions of Crawford and Davis... that doesn't really look or sound much like them. That said, both deserve Emmys. It is VERY hard to portray an actual person because you open yourself up to this kind of comparison and you can't duplicate them.
Jessica Lange is superb actress but I just dont get Crawford from her. Crawford was 58 in 1962 and Lange here is 67,vocally they were very different, Sarandon who is same level as Lange as actress nailed Davis her way of speaking her vocal tone, even tho she is older too but Davis looked older then she actually was and she was younger than Crawford because she was never obsessed about her looks as Crawford, Dietrich and other screen legends.
I can't believe I'm saying this, but Joan looks much more beautiful in the side-by-side. And her body is more snatched! Had it not been for the side-by-side i never would have known that!
No offense to the legendary Jessica Lange, but Joan Crawford’s voice alone carried so much grit, class, and strength that that’s all I could pay attention to from the video.
The best thing about Feud is that not for 1 second I thought I'm watching Jessica Lange and Susan Sarandon. The acting is awesome! Ryan Murphy knows who to cast
I'm enjoying this series immensely! It's a shame that some people have become so upset with the show.... it sounds like they are going to have a heart attack! REMEMBER TO TAKE YOUR HEART PILLS YA OLD QUEENS! HA!
I may be late, but i still love it ! I read the book version by Shaun/Shawn Considine, of course the filmed version lacks a lot of details but i still love it and cherish jessica and susan's work
Ms. Joan Crawford was truly immensely talented, passionate and driven. She will be forever a true American treasure, the embodiment of fierceness. The series brought to light so much on how predatory behavior was used for gains of others without any care of the actors. The performances were outstanding, and eerie. Glamour, class, and real life.
What a beautiful job the director and Lange do in recreating this memorable Joan Crawford moment. The real Joan is absolutely beautiful - as is the always beautiful Lange.
Everyone is talking about Jessica's performance and all I see is Joan's actual real life, petty glee at screwing over Bette! She savored every moment of that!
Actors seldom do an impersonation of a known person they are portraying. The good ones capture the essence of that person. Like Anthony Hopkins in Nixon. Jessica Lange and Susan Sarandon where both very good.
Jessica Lange did a fabulous job. I was thinking at first that Susan S. would do better than J. Lange, but Jessica knocked it out of the park. Great job!!!
The actor portraying Oscar winner/director David Lean is Anthony Crivello. Brilliant set up and steady-cam work by director Ryan Murphy and DP Nelson Craig... and sound, make-up, hair and costume design departments. The difficult tracking shot that was not included here was blocked out and executed at the original site of The Oscars that year, The Santa Monica Civic Auditorium in three takes. Wonderful work by director and crew... and their attention to detail was phenomenal.
Jessica Lange was amazing in the Grey Gardens movie; she was able to capture Big Eddie's accent and vocal mannerisms. As Crawford, Lange isn't doing that work. Her voice sounds nothing like Crawford's; it's too high and shaky.
@@ThePharaoho Well there was, actually. Not in her films, but the southern accent (she was from the south) did slip out in interviews. Not to the extent Lange had, though
The ONLY negative comment I have about "Feud" are the commercials. If it were a book, it would be a page turner. You can't wait to see what's going to happen next and you don't want it to end. IMO, this really art could only happen with a great script, direction, dedication to details and above all the cast's performances. I have not seen any comments that Susan Sarandon and Jessica Lange both produced this miniseries. Therefore, Bette Davis and Joan Crawford are given equal screen time, as it should be. I want to know both these women. Clearly Sarandon and Lange worked hard. These women are at or approaching the ages of Davis and Crawford. They GET them. What they also have in common with their subjects is that, like "Baby Jane," they created a vehicle for themselves and it's a hit. I hope they share Emmy Awards. BRAVO!
YES! I am a fan of both actresses but Lange was miscast for this. She was playing herself. And sorry to say, but she is way too old to be playing Joan, especially with all the bizarre things she's done to her face to try to look younger. She didn't learn the deep, breathy voice Joan was known for. She just did what she always does. Susan Sarandon nailed it... Even though she is prettier than Bette in this stage of their lives.
@@Boobalopbop yes. The whole casting of "Feud" was a mess! Jessica didn't have the voice or eyebrows that Joan had. Faye Dunaway actually looked more like Joan!
Boobalopbop my thoughts exactly, Susan was amazing and looked better than Betty at the point but the acting drew us from that, wish Jessica would’ve not made it her own and brought more of Joan
Actually Joan Crawford trained herself to speak in a deeper than natural register. She shared this tip with an uprising star (I forgot who she is but she told this story in a documentary interview about Crawford) when they met. Kind of a pity that Jessica didn’t take that into account when she played her.
Jassica Lange is one of the greatest actress of all time. Who can forget her in "Blue Sky"...what an impressive performance and "Feud " is undoubtedly a masterpiece....Love her
Jessica Lange is a very good actress. I've always liked her breathy voice and there is a certain sadness about her performances. However, it's obvious she doesn't resemble Joan Crawford. Faye Dunaway made a better Joan. She not only looked more like her in Mommie Dearest but she had a fierce, take-charge energy that isn't there in Jessica Lange"s portrayal. Being one of Ryan Murphy's favorite actresses is what got her the role of Joan Crawford, I imagine. Well, I still look forward to watching Jessica in her other movies and tv shows.
Jessica Lange as Joan Crawford is unbeatable. There was a moment when I realised I wasn't watching Joan- it was Jessica. And I could not ask for more from an actress.
I think both women did exempilary performences.these talented women gave justice to the fued, I first saw the movies "Baby Jane " when I was eighteen.i have always been a fan of Bette Davis, but after watching this series , it was much more than that.Bravo ladies ! You did a wonderful job!,,,,,,!
I wish the producers of the show had tried to be more authentic in their Joan Crawford appearance. Joan never had her hair black after the early WW2 days. Her hair in the 1950s and 1960s was a blondish red. At this time in her life she was wearing heavy highlights and wore elaborate hairstyles. Joan always wore the finest and best of clothes, hats, purses, and shoes and her accessories were legendary. I personally do not like Jessica Lange's Joan Crawford. The worst thing is her voice is nothing like Joan who had a deep cultured often whispery voice like Jackie Kennedy when she was performing. Joan was a commanding presence and filled a room when she entered. In Jessica's defense, Joan is an almost hard act to follow.
Unfair comments about Jessica Lange. Truth be told - no one could really play Joan Crawford - Lange's acting is good. The side-by-side confirms it.
She stinks.. No one can play Crawford.
No, she is an amazing actress, it's just that they are both openly avoiding to imitate Joan and Bette, they don't want to be like the drag queens who impersonate Joan and Bette.

Jesus, why don't you just write a damn book. What a know it all and an arm chair critic who uses hideous syntax. On second thought, forget about the book.
That was amazing thanks for the clip.
Cant deny Jessica Lange so alike as Joan Crawford... Love FEUD!
Fran Canino Very deniable.
Lange is NOTHING like Crawford. It's not even close. The whole thing is a bad joke.
Agreed. She's totally the wrong choice. Lange's voice, her eyes, are NOTHING like Crawford
If you are looking for a complete replica of Crawford, go watch her films. It's not about looking or sounding like the legend, but telling & communicating the story effectively and that is why this show is brilliant!
MrS98VAC Absurd and ridiculous. In that case they should have cast Ruth Buzzi or Salma Hayek as Crawford.
these comparisons are excellent! thank you!!!
Malicious in what way. You sound like poor, bitter Bette. And Gloria Swanson was worlds better than Davis - no clipped speech, pop eyes or cigarette.
This was amazing!! thank you for doing this!!
nailed it. great show. superb portrayals by Lange and Surandon.
Brilliant editing, to see it like this is wonderful
Well done! This was fun to watch!
Susan has THE most southern accent that Bette never had
She was just replaying her American horror story character..she was rubbish at being Joan
Crawford actually looked much older than 58 here, she looked mid 60’s at least. Very harsh
HA!
Thanks for this, very interesting!
There is no one better than Jessica Lange. Everything she does is way beyond the best. She amazes me with that smile.
I may be late, but i still love it ! I read the book version by Shaun/Shawn Considine, of course the filmed version lacks a lot of details but i still love it and cherish jessica and susan's work
Put up or shut up...hard to play an iconic figure...Lange captured her essence, her primal nature...it was a brilliant interpretation
Thank you so much for this
this show is the best show
Dude, this is incredible!
Actor who played Maximum Schell is 10 years older than the actual actor in 1963, but looks 10 years younger than him.
the whole academy award part on this episode had me dying lol. I can't believe she upstaged Bette like that. lmao I love this show
Wow amazing comparison with the videos ! 👍👍👍
Jessica was magnificent as Joan..she should get an award for her performance
What a beautiful job the director and Lange do in recreating this memorable Joan Crawford moment. The real Joan is absolutely beautiful - as is the always beautiful Lange.
Everyone is talking about Jessica's performance and all I see is Joan's actual real life, petty glee at screwing over Bette! She savored every moment of that!
Such an amazing series, im thrilled by it
My only wish is that they had made Jessica's eyebrows just a little bit thicker.
Nicely done, thanks.
Kidman stole the Emmy, that should have gone to Jessica!!!
Wonderful work by director and crew... and their attention to detail was phenomenal.
only watching this cause I miss Jessica in American Horror Story
same
Same
A few years ago, the Academy released a video of her entrance onstage, and it wasn't the way it's shown on Feud. The video is no longer online.
Jessica's version of Joan is softer than the real deal
Thanks for the video
Jessica Lange was amazing in the Grey Gardens movie; she was able to capture Big Eddie's accent and vocal mannerisms. As Crawford, Lange isn't doing that work. Her voice sounds nothing like Crawford's; it's too high and shaky.
Yes, Crawford had the whisky and cigarrettes voice, deep and a bit husky.
And funnily enough, it's the opposite with Davis, Sarandon's voice is 1 level lower/huskier. Though maybe that can't be helped.
Which Jessica herself has? I mean, that is an exact description of her voice. So I don't really see what the problem is.
Kayleigh Griffiths Umm there was no southern twang in Joan's voice.
BRAVO!
love the show and think both Jessica and Susan are top notch in their roles!
Im so surprised that they did not win any awards. Susan and Jessica were amazing.
Jessica Lange Emmy now for portraying Joan Crawford Wowowee 🙋
Joyce Hobson Nicole Kidman says hi :)
2:40 what's this song called? Someone tell me!
Anne Hathaway can play Joan Crawford when she's older. Anyone else see the resemblance?
Noone can play Crawford except Crawford. So why bother? Why would anyone choose to watch a fake, an imposter over the real thing?
Lena Headey
I totally agree.
Agreed!
these are awesome!!
Joan's voice was deep and confident, Jessica was the opposite! She sounded child like, helpless even!
I love the fact that this took place at the exact moment I was born.
Nicely done! You have a future career, if not already, in film editing.
PERFECTA EDICIÓN!!!
I watched the original academy awards video when the episode was on and I was impressed by how closely they mimicked everything!
Jessica Lange as Joan Crawford is unbeatable. There was a moment when I realised I wasn't watching Joan- it was Jessica. And I could not ask for more from an actress.
Jessica Lane is gorgeous but it's hard to top Joan Crawford. There was a presence about her. The posture and speaking voice.
Do the "Straight Jacket" trailers...
I'm doing it. ♥
