I did some long line commercial halibut fishing west of Afognak back in 1991. Nothing tastier than halibut right out of the water. (Except shrimp and prawns and crab, ha)

@@BOUTDOORSALASKA I did come visit Alaska in 2017, even paid to go on charter boat to do some fishing, but the 2 ladies I met up with changed their minds about everything that we had planned & paid in advance to do. As a widow, I can't afford to travel alone, so the other 2 women that also wanted to go to Alaska suggested we share motels & rental car & divide the expenses 3 ways. Unfortunately, out of the 17 days there, the only thing I did get to do was the Denali train ride, they didn't care to go anywhere or do anything. We did go & spend 1 night in Seward (where we were supposed to board a charter boat & go fishing, but the one planning everything had canceled after I had already paid my share). The rest of the time was spent sitting in a cabin in Homer. I am still trying & hoping to go back to Alaska alone or hopefully one of my granddaughters will go too. Most of my granddaughters fish, hunt, & can process whatever they get. None of us can afford the trip, but it doesn't mean any of us have given up, still saving & still trying. Who knows, maybe someday I'll see you all catching more Halibut on the beach of Seward. LOL! P.S. I live in the desert, born and raised here, so you can bet your booties I would love to live in Alaska.

Big Ugly Stik rods! My favorite. Great video. My brother lives in Alaska, and has a 30 ft. boat. Lots of Halibut and salmon, cod, and rock fish. I'm not sure if he ever buys food at the store.

Hey cool I saw @OutdoorBoys fish from this spot a few weeks ago!
They were fishing with a guy I know over on the other side of the Kenai peninsula. But if you look we were doing a video (can we limit out) near them on the same day but its 2 hours away. Its a beautiful place with lots of sharks. they were in the Cook Inlet by clam gulch. great spot though lots of fish caught over there! Seward is not known for shore fishing Halibut.

Randy is a fishing guide in Ninilck and he fishes private entrance I have fished with Randy there and I am positive where it’s at and I have never seen anyone fish for halibut from the beach I fished . Go look at my 2nd video ever it’s with same guy same place. I know a lot of beaches look similar but look up Randy Sysco (compassion through fishing). He a great guy he has helped me out
Got to use that rod. Pump up real down. If that gets to be to much walk backwards and real up and repeat. Iam missing Alaska bad right now this Texas heat has been brutal this yr already 10 days over 105. And like 30 over 100. My inlaws have a big place in Homer. We go usually every two or three yrs for a couple weeks.
We appreciate your feedback this style of fishing is definitely different from walleye fishing Utah. There is definitely a learning curve
@BOUTDOORSALASKA oh ya. Iam missi g alaska right now . Iam from Texas and this heat is brutal this summer. My inlaws own a big place in Homer Alaska. We usually go up every other or every three yrs or so.
My dad just came home from Seward. When I was in SoCal I taught myself how to catch Halibut from the beach, after years of seeing them shallow while fishing Barred Perch and Corbina. I am giving myself credit for popularizing a certain spoon that was from the Midwest {home} after most people used the $25 jerkbaits....then after talking bout it on a forum I seen everyone using it LOL. But people are so full of themselves there they never admitted it. Timing was key! Tide flow and smelt runs! They werent the giant Alaska halibut, but a 25-30" halibut is still a good meal for 1 and I caught them barefoot year round.

@@BOUTDOORSALASKA I used Krocodile Spoons by Luhr Jensen, and matched the color to local baitfish. The ones with the red flapper on the treble hook worked best, reeled in super slow and let drop/flutter occasionally.

First congrats, you said 600 ft line out how did you get the line that far out?
We can cast really far with our shore fishing poles and we also use drones some of the time and they go 1/4 mile out if needed. We are making a video today about how surf casting poles are set up it’s coming as soon as we can finish it. Sometimes we can only go 80yards depending set up and weather conditions

That is like a giant flounder here in south Louisiana.
The way he cut that open at first down the middle could have been stuffed with crabmeat, (blue crab) here, (King or Ophelia) up there and broiled with a melted butter and garlic concoction with sliced lemon on the top. You could feed a bunch of people with that meal.

Of course that was quite a few years ago, times were different. The only thing I thought there was a shortage of in that great state was warm weather.

The leader line is Seiners twine ordered online. If your around I have a little I can give you. It’s soft so fish aren’t so shy to pick it up. We are going to do another video from beach if you’re around.

The 2 hours before/after high tide , you apply the all the time, and more importantly, does it work all the time, specifically for shore/bank fishing?

Not all the time but it’s very important here in Seward and Kenai area, Another important factor is size of tide swings the less the better from what we have noticed. High Tide between 8:00 pm and 11:00 pm seems to be our Best fishing results.
What exactly you mean when you say "the size of the tide swing"?
And can you give some examples.
I'm at central Florida, near the gulf by place like Cristal River, St. Pete beach, Cedar Key, and right now it's extremely hot, and humid during the day. I'm thinking night fishing, any advice, tips.

@@rec1015 here in Cook Inlet our tides can be 23 ft high tide and -2.3 low tide so it’s a 25.3 foot tide swing the smaller the difference the better
Like 10 ft high and 2 ft low is only 8 ft tide swing but that’s just an example a lot of tide books show bigger fish on days that are better

Much easier to reel if you use the rod, lift the rod tip up 6 feet, then wind diwn on the line, much easier than using your reel as a winch

I know they use them for Fish and Chips, also know as Grey COD here but it is A type of COD

Because from shore they have a tendency to swim straight at you and if you can’t keep up you will loose them

I don’t think a gun is necessary for shore fishing Seward and Lowell point. There are a few Bears but never seen or heard of a problem. I always carry but there are lots of Bears in my neighborhood next to the Salmon Weir. If you’re flying in it can be difficult to bring guns

If you want a bit of advice about how to not get tired so quick fighting fish? Where your hand is holding the rod on the reel seat is bad for your wrist and makes it a lot harder to reel slide your right arm up to the top of the grip on the rod. Another thing is if you like me are right handed switch the reel handle over to the other side. The reason people use left hand is for casting spoons and stuff so you can reel right away with halibut that's not an issue hope you find useful.

150 years ago, an AVERAGE halibut was AT LEAST twice to three times that size or MORE. . . The AVERAGE. . Not the BIG ones!

It’s different
Generally right hand people use left hand retrieve on spinning reels and right hand retrieve on bait casters. Left hand retrieve fells natural on underslung spinning reels.
Seriously, having the rod in your strong arm seems awkward to you?
I grew up like @stearnsbingham552 mentioned I honestly never questioned it most of our fishing is on spinning rod so I’m use to it. We have several trips we are working on videos for and we use other hand on those due to different real and to make things worse one is opposite of others. They will post this week 1 more Sitka and 2 Seward DIY trips

You never keep any halibut over 70 lbs. It hurts the fishery. And the big ones are always full of worms. We never ate anything over 70.

@@BOUTDOORSALASKA yes nice big filets. Couple big roast. I lived in Alaska many years. You are definitely on my stomping grounds. I miss it a lot. Commercial fished the 80s and early 90s. I've lived all over this country. Hard to find anywhere better or more beautiful. Short big butt story. Nicholson inlet, southwest of Ketchikan myself and a deckhand hooked a halibut big one, hopped in the Boston whaler to battle. Fought this fucking monster about 45 minutes. The it hit the surface, worn out just looking right at us. This thing was wider than Boston whaler minimum 8ft long. Thick as hell. We could see the circle hook was almost straightened out. No gun. Lyle Stack tells me gaff him. I'm like not a fucking chance. I've caught literally thousands of halibut long lining and just fishing. Got a few 300 to 400 lbs. They would have been this monsters great great grand babies. He or she dwarfed anything I had seen before or since. Once he got his second breath he just left. Big ass circle hook straightened completely just fell out his mouth. I was actually glad. It kind of scared me a bit. In the water with a fucking monster. I'm certain it could have easily flipped our Boston whaler. Shit my adrenaline is pumping right now remembering it. Enjoy life my friend.

There are some 600 feet out it gets rough especially when they run at you I would rather they fight the whole way it’s easier. You see catches edited down short some are a long way out others are only 60 feet but I can appreciate your comment due to not knowing the length of the catch. We went to Sitka this last weekend and catching salmon and Halibut over 300 feet down over and over all day will tire you out . Video coming soon!
