    I can't express how happy I am to see a video of the "little guys." Probably thousands of videos made on the boats of huge, expensive operations. Don't forget, guys and gals like you are the backbone.

    Some people are known to shore fish that way.
    If you're on an island with a sudden drop-off you secure your long line to the shore and take the other end out onto the water in a boat and stretch the line out. You have a lead ball on the far end with 5 or 6 clips and circle hooks at maybe 25 foot intervals and bait the hooks up.
    At least this is what I've heard.
    Great video. I'm a commercial diver and I often pass by a fish processing plant in Port Hardy, BC and see the totes full of halibut fresh off the boats. Man, some of them are big. Biggest I ever caught personally was 101 pounds, followed by a 77 pounder, within a half hour of each other.

    I was a “dragger” (trawler-pulling big nets) out of Charleston, Oregon for 20 years. We’d often catch halibut “incidentally “, big ones. They are a strong, hearty fish. On a small boat like that, a flopping halibut can cause problems. That’s likely why they club them in the head.

    Awesome catch !! I live in Florida on the space coast and fish Port Canaveral quite often. Record flounder here in Florida is barely over 20lbs. Nowadays if you can get a 10-12 pounder you’re doing great.
    Every time I see a big halibut I can’t help but think it’s just a giant jacked up version of our flounder...wishful thinking on my part !!
    We have to beat the cobia here like you’re doing to the halibut there otherwise they wreak havoc on your boat or anyone close to them.

    Fish is my favourite food, how I would have loved to have met that crew at the dockside, and bought one of those of fish. I would have rushed home, sliced it up, cooked a large portion...along with generously cut British style chips and fast frozen the rest.

    • @ryderbell2734

      rusedorange they are clipped tight enough to not slide unless pulled by very large Halibut or salmon shark

    ha ha. I am a very small boat in the halibut industry. 800 hooks is minuscule in comparison to what is typically fished . The halibut fishery is actually one of the most regulated and watched fishery in the World.IPHC
    It is internationally controlled and fisherman all have a quota. I could fish it one hook at a time or 10,000. I have a set quota and that is what I catch. And all the catch is very regulated at the docks and enforced.

    What type of clips do you use to stop the hook lines stay in place and not slide down the main line?

    • @lfabich
      @lfabich  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      They are a Stainless steel Clip that closes on the line pretty tight. A big fish can move them to some degree but the line is not super tight so it is pretty hard to move them.
