This one scared me..

  • This was without a doubt the scariest and sketchiest recovery I've ever done, so I enlisted the help of my friend Jason with the Primal Outdoors TH-cam channel that you can check out at / primaloutdoors . This is an area that basically right in our backyard and is a beautiful view of the canyon, river, and reservoir. But unfortunately someone thought it would be fun to jump a riding lawnmower off the cliff and down into the canyon. We wanted that eyesore out of there before it attracted even more garbage to be dumped over the edge, so I built a homemade gin pole gantry crane like is used in the oil fields and drill rig sites, then spliced together a couple of ‪@YankumRopes‬ to have enough reach with my ‪@harborfreight‬ Badlands winch. The job went perfectly and we got not only the mower, but some tires, and a bunch of small trash cleaned up as well.
    Be sure to check out the upcoming PLS Bend public lands cleanup on July 11th right after the Overland Expo weekend to join Jason and I to clean up even more public lands!

    Thank you for your video.. Greatly appreciate people picking up after other people.. I appreciate the real life application of this simple but yeah effective idea. Especially the application of the fulcrum of the lower snatch block . The only thing that I would suggest changing and switching to would be a pitnal style hitch They can handle 10 times the load on a lifting application like that.. Thanks again for taking care of our backcountry .

    • @shawnraintree
      @shawnraintree 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      And yes before I get a hater comment saying that it's only a 300 pounds of weight yes it is only a 300 pounds And not that much force on it . It's not this lifting application it would be potentially the next when they try to pick up something even heavier.

    • @CaseyLaDelle
      @CaseyLaDelle  2 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      Yeah if this was any sort of regular use thing I would very much prefer a pintle hitch, and even thought of spinning it upside down for a heavier lift. But I test lifted the front of my Jeep with zero issues and only built the setup for this one project, so I left the hitch as is

    Nicely done. I used to.do this type of stuff when I lived in Calgary Alberta in Canada after long weekends. The government would supply two massive roll off bins. We pulled out trailers, BBQs, all kinds of stuff. The bins would typically both be overflowing. It is astounding the mental gymnastics involved in thinking "let's go out to this gorgeous wilderness place and just dump a bunch of trash and expect it to be nice and not closed when we come back".

    The scenery is always beautiful. The snake part is nerve-wracking to me. I hate the thought of you all ever getting hurt by snake bite or falling. You all be safe and God bless you for keeping the trash cleaned up. Amazing videos

    Jason's right about age and caution around heights. I'm really old and really cautious near cliffs.

    Great cleanup project! (I was waiting for Jason to take the last "elevator to the top"!)
    I used to camp at Hungry Valley trailhead in Lemon Valley, NV (north of Reno). Dry camping on BLM land and there was a great target practice area one mile up the road. I always took garbage bags, Homer's buckets and a self-built dirt sieve to cleanup the amazing selection of crap people would leave at the camping and shooting areas. Everything from empty brass bullet cases to televisions! I would shovel into the sieve and dump the glass, brass etc. into the buckets, bag it and haul it back home at the end of the camping trip. I used a big plastic lawn rake to gather the smaller items and made sure I left "flower petal" patterns in the sand as I raked, hoping others would get the idea and keep the land we were allowed to use a little cleaner.
    Alas, my efforts were not contagious enough. The adjacent Indian reservation annexed the land a few years ago. No public hearing or other action necessary. A motion at the meeting of the Tribal Council, and boom, it's done. Now, there is not only no shooting or firearms allowed on the newly-annexed Indian land, there is also no camping allowed anymore on that (again beautiful) desert land. Keep it clean folks, or it will be taken away.

    I was binging Trail Mater's channel and Rory mentioned that he was inspired to build a rig like this for a similar over-the-edge retrieval. Finally had a link to go check the original. Props!
