29% of accidents are not caused by speeding, 29% of accidents have one or more involved drivers speeding, which may or may not have been the causal factor. MOST speed limits have nothing to do with safety. In most cases, speed limits are set on the basis for politicians to fluff up their PR by making it look like they care about safety. In much more rare cases, like with the texas toll highway, it is set on the basis of other political factors like money.
Of course this is coincident with the rise of all the clunked up crap touch screens and "safety" features/driver assist crap but I remember when Mt Saint Helens erupted and they showed a car on the highway that didn't make it and everyone in it was killed. Somebody else who saw that said the doomed car was doing 100 MPH when he passed them and he made it out and they didn't. There are rare times when it is necessary to go really fast!!! The solution should be yearly written testing and reminders of the liabilities and dangers of excessive speed if you own a vehicle capable of 131 mph or higher. Plus higher driver license and plate and insurance surcharges for cars capable of higher than 131 mph. Course you could always limit those cars to 145 also.

You never mention needing to pass more than one car. Also than speed limits are based upon environmental conditions instead of road capabilities. 60 miles per hour on a 5 lane road is not reasonable.
in Germany, people consistently drive on der Autobahn at 80 mph approx. their crash/ fatality rate is way, way below that of the US. it's not an engineering hardware problem. it's a human software problem.
please don't compare european roads to n.american ones. You can drive across Germany in a day. What a joke.

The Autobahn also has all trucks limited to just 55 Mph and doesn't have nearly as many on and off ramps.
It also doesn't have as many lanes or anywhere near the U.S. interstate system's traffic volumes.
Plus, it covers a very tiny area. Germany is only half the size of the state of Texas, after all. So when you travel the Autobahn, you are on it for a very short time. Hence, you are exposed to high speeds for a much shorter time, which greatly reduces your risk of a high-speed crash.
Many Americans can't drive as well. The licensing requirements in Germany is way harder as well than the American test. I've been licenses in both Germany and the USA.
The problem is a lot of people are stupid and ruin it for everyone else

Drive responsibly and do not go at speeds well above the posted limits on public roads. If you want to drive at a car's capacity (excessive speeds) to a race track you can pay for time on a track.

@@dougkenny6548 There are a lot of people in a hurry and that do not pay attention when they are driving. Unless it is a medical emergency it is better to leave in enough time for a destination so you do not have to rush. If you get in an accident driving fast you will not save time.
@@user-ph3rb1in6e it's a complicated world. Everyone's in a hurry even when there's no reason for it. Cell phones created unintended consequences. A lot of elderly shouldn't be driving, but we hate to take their license due to the loss of freedom it imposes. I wish rather than just learning the rules of the road everyone could go though the emergency vehicle operations class taught to police. Most of all I wish responsible people weren't always punished for the actions of the irresponsible and stupid.

When people get in a vehicle, they need to drive, not put on makeup, shave, and do everything that they should have done at home before they left. Put the damned phone down and pay attention to the road….

After leaving Germany in the mid 1970s, facing the 55 MPH American national speed limit. I bought a VW Bug and still got speeding tickets.

Well, the gave pharmaceutical companies $2 billion, and under 18 months they came up with a vaccine to stop a global pandemic. Preventing millions more people from dying.
They also pass laws, forcing us all to wear seatbelts, which is reduced driver facilities by more than 70% since instituted.

I had a "runaway prius"... when the "electronic throttle" fails in "open" and should be designed NOT to do that. But they have done that since EFI came about... What you should do is take your foot off the brake and reapply it (this worked on my Prius). The other is HOLD the shifter in the Neutral position. When panicking, you try and flip it into Neutral, but don't hold it there long enough HOLD the paddle in the Nuetral position and it should go into neutral. If you have a runaway condition, replace the 12v battery (BTW, this only happens to Hybrids nowadays). The car tests to see if there is enough power to start the computer, then starts the brake and coolant pump THEN starts the computer on the Prius, so there was at times sub minimal voltage causing all kinds of electrical polterguists.. I replaced it with a regular Optima battery (battery in the trunk, need glass matt battery), never had another polterguist with the car

Having high 0-20 acceleration helps with making turns, and 0-40 to merge into the flow of traffic. Extra power from 40-60 means safer and quicker passing.

I have avoided more accidents through superior horsepower than I have through braking. Every accident I have been involved in was at or below the speed limit (I have been rear ended 8 times). If we actually taught people how to drive and pay more attention to the road than their phone, we would eliminate a good portion of accidents.
Can you give an example of how you have avoided an accident through superior horsepower?
Been driving over 40 years and never once been rear-ended or needed superior horsepower to avoid an accident. Long Island, NYC, NJ etc.

This is why I go around the chunks of traffic going slow and catch up to the cars going 90. More likely the accidents are gonna be in the chunk of 70 mph traffic. So, I'm gonna get tf away from those shyte drivers.
Some times acceleration is the surest way to avoid an accident not braking.

I witnessed a person who was stopped at a traffic light that was red in the next lane, and they sped through the light suddenly because they noticed the car behind them wasn't going to stop. They saved themselves. Another scenario of if the intersection has a camera, the person that runs the light gets a ticket in the mail, plus lost time going to court and court costs. Are we going to have cars in the future that won't move because of a red light a a😅n intersection because of government interference?

When I was a kid I was impressed by the 160 mph speedometer in the corvettes. Now I have one with a 220 mph speedometer. It still brings a smile to my face when I tske someone for a ride and their eyes bug out when they see the 220 and ask can it really go that fast and I say no only 196. I will say the best feature to keep you from speeding is the heads up didplay that shows the speed limit right next to your actual speed. The constant reminder has caused me to slow down.
Same. I was impressed with the Trans Am having a 160mph speedo when the V6 Firebird only had 120mph.
Nowadays 4 cylinder economy cars with half the horespower have 160mph speedos it's stupid

I had my Vette up to 125 on an empty freeway one day. Smooth as silk. It loved the higher speeds, just hunkered down and got real quiet. But then I thought, if I'm going to go this fast I should be flying, not driving.
It’s good that you can drive a Vette and maintain the speed limit, but I have a hard time maintaining 60 mph on a straightaway in ANY car.

There should be driving tests re-taken at every license renewal. Those 65 and older re-take every 4 years
If all cars were manual stick, you wouldn’t see too many kids driving.
Most accidents could be avoided if people just drive in the proper lane. Too many left and middle lane campers and it's those people that endanger everyone else.

The US 'right on red' has to be one of the most idiotic options available to drivers too lazy to bother if anything else is already in the left lane, barreling towards them.

The whole point of the long ramp onto a freeway is to get UP to highway speeds so that drivers can merge into traffic and the engineering morons are making them go to a complete stop right before the freeway!
For the longest time, I never could understand why many speed limits (especially around curves) are so low… My new high-end Acura, my clapped out 20-year-old Acura, or the what would now be 21-year-old Chevrolet I had are all capable of safely taking those turns at speeds MUCH higher than the speed limit…
Then I started driving antique cars… Now I understand these speed limits were determined when tires, suspension, steering, and braking systems were much less advanced than they have been during my 36-year-old life.

Just because you drive a sports car that can handle those conditions doesn’t mean every other vehicle or every other driver can. The limits were set for the AVERAGE vehicle and average drivers, not speed freaks who think every road is a racetrack.
Thats why those curves are recommended speeds, not absolutes. Orange signs...

Here in Germany one of the arguments for the automotive industry is the no-speed limit on the Autobahn. The fatality rate in accident rates also pretty low on the Autobahn compared to what we call here "Landstraße" or country roads basically a type of road similar to route 66 in the USA.
A Statistic:
"Country roads are statistically even more dangerous. 57 percent of traffic fatalities last year occurred on country roads and eleven percent on Autobahn. This is what current data from the Federal Statistical Office says."
US drivers have 1/10 the knowledge of german drivers. plus, germany has wonderful rules, actually enforced, such as not riding in the left lane.

I think the statistics aren't very useful here as it's total numbers not rates from what u have quoted, almost useless to have stated that without more context
Of fatal crashes “…29% were due to speeding…” so that means that 71% of fatal crashes had NOTHING to do with speed. That tells me that most drivers know how to drive safely at higher speeds. Seems to be a pretty good stat to me. If you had a 71% chance of winning at blackjack in Vegas, would take that bet? If you had a 71% chance of winning the Powerball would you buy a ticket?
if you have 29% chance to die every single time you speeding, and you happy with 71% you better to stop driving at all.. even if you have 10%. still it is more then 0%.

If Americans had to meet the driving standards needed for high speed driving. 50%+ would not be able to pass the drivers test which means car sales would plummet, we can't have that now can we.
AMerica had the best mass transit system in the world, which was bought up and shut down, to force people into cars, without mass transit and everyone driving, the standards had to be set to the lowest denominator (dmb axx) driving a car. So, speed limits were set low so they could not get into to much trouble.
I have physically witnessed a born American having the drivers test read to her. Now tell me, how can a person drive that is not smart enough to read street signs.

Bro we arent gping to force people to go faster. We are going to make faster lanes in certain areas so if you can go faster than 75 you can go 120 for the next 20 minutes here maybe 20 minutes there in desolate areas. Then as youvd gone across the country you get there way faster cumulatively. The 75mph limit lane will still be there with the slow lane next to it for slower. Faster on one side slower on the other and many lanes
We need super license tests for better drivers that allow them to exceed the speed limit up to 90+ MPH without any consequence. Or an actual fast lane where one can be ticketed for obstructing traffic by going too slow. I live in SoCal and I cannot tell you how many times some granny in a Prius who is absolutely terrified to exceed 60 MPH is way over to the far left holding up dozens of competent drivers. It's ridiculous!
@stolenhal0 I actually agree with this. As a matter of fact, only "Super Drivers" unless it's like a golf cart, which aren't allowed on highways.
@@stolenhal0 For this to work, we will need a six week training course, a comprehensive driving test, cars built for high speeds, no one under 19 allowed to obtain a drivers license, grannies removed from the road and mass transit. All of the above will hurt car, oil and insurance sales, so it will never happen.

One of these days, they *will* be forced to manufacture cars that know what the speed limit is on every road and are forced to remain within it. God forbid people should be entrusted to judge for themselves how fast they can go. No, we can't have that. Must take away everyone's freedom as much as possible until we're all computer-controlled robots who obey the government's every edict without question. 🙄

I might be mistaken, but I believe Tesla can already do this. Problem is GPS in cars isn’t good enough. We have lots of roads that run right next to a highway and GPS will sometimes get confused which you are on. Imagine being on a 65mph highway and then all of a sudden your car slams you down to 25mph and won’t budge because it got confused lol.
@@brendanberry7403 Yes -- I've seen that happen, too. The GPS think's you're on a side road when you're actually on the highway, or vice-versa. Do you think the bureaucrats will care, though? It's been my experience that they'll just go right ahead and enact these regulations and then we'll have to spend years in court trying to get them to remove them or modify them because they didn't think about the unintended consequences.
Keep your old car in good repair. You're gonna need it.
I like this, my driving is very focused. I'm sure people who drive or have driven a manual can attest to that. Driving a manuel for as long as i have puts being an alert driver in ones physics, n now that more n more people have gotten away from manuels to the ease of auto trans or even self driving, alertness has lacked over the 40+ years he speeks about. Car manufacturers need to bring back the manuel trans option.

Absolutely! I started driving in manual and still do. When I drive automatics it is so weird it won’t even let you drive forward in or back in gear without going through so many hurdles. I have adhd so I think manual makes me a much more attentive drive and helped me develop such attention to detail. Driving is one time it is actually easiest for me NOT to space out. The extent I have used cruise control or anything else like that was testing out WTF it actually did when I first started driving. Way too much of a distraction for me!
No whether I am having fun driving or just driving normal, such as ride sharing etc… everyone thinks I am a very attentive, safe driver. I had a friend recently comment on predicting a driving backing out of driveway into road like 10 seconds before it happened far ahead like, “how did you see that so far in advance.” I am always scanning far ahead and behind, anticipating that bad drivers will do things like that.
When I have kids I will force them to learn on and drive manual, even if it means very old gasoline car by then!!

It isn't speed that kills. It's the juxtaposition of speed & stationary that does. Going fast never killed anyone. Rapidly becoming stationary leads to rapid unplanned disassembly.
I wouldn't quite say "never." Look up Le Mans 1955. Yep. They were going fast. Point is that there are always exceptions, special cases. Better not say never.
In America you have the freedom to speed. You also have the right to be ticketed for it. Once cars are controlled by the government, we have lost another freedom. A lot of traffic fatalities are from people that don't speed, but shouldn't be driving anyway. At least I do my speeding on the track, and my car doesn't take that away from me.
Driving is one of the few freeing activities left. Take that away and people will feel caged and go mad.
Most traffic fatalities are caused by 1) speeding 2) illegal lane changes 3) DUI/DWI 4) phone
Speeding doesn't cause crashes. Reckless driving, distracted driving, impaired driving, mechanical failure and obstacles entering the roadway cause accidents.
I have experience to back that up. Most accidents are caused by people that shouldn't be driving in the first place.

Well we in Wales UK have been lumbered eith 20mph on all roads that have houses by them. It's terrible!. More road rage and pedestrians walking into the road without looking. Ive seen more accidents since they reduced the speed from 30mph. Crazy politicians!..😂

in my country the limit on the highway is 87mph and i rarely drive under it, its really annoying to have a 2 hour trip extended to 4 hours just because of speed limit.

Instead of making them more powerful they need to make them more fuel efficient. I had a 1982 dodge full size van 360 engine 2 barrel carburetor. I was hauling 2,400 pounds of parts from Toledo to Detroit at 80mph which was what the traffic was moving at. This van got 18 mpg. The only electronics was the little ignition module. Best I ever got on newer Vans was a 2000 Chevy Express with a 302 engine 15--16 mpg hauling less than 2,000 pounds we need to go back to simple fuel efficient vehicles.
It's not about being simple. That vehicle just had less power. Those V8s with a 2 barrel only made about 135 hp
@billsanter Diesel buses in the 80s got 8 mpg. Early 2000s the new hybrid busses were getting 8 mpg because of stricter emission controls according to the Seattle Times in the early 2000s.

My speedometer in my Accent goes up to 140 MPH. My PB is 118 MPH I achieved running away from a road raging Accord. 🤣🤣🤣 It was probably 120, but I looked in my rearview as the guage was climbing. He was letting off as we approached traffic. His car was faster, but he was getting scared. 😂😂😂

This video is triublesome because it contains many assumptions, and myths about speed, speed limits and highway accidents that are untrue. He is citing the 30 percent speeding myth like its true. The actual number is closer to 7 or 8 percent and likely a lower percentage of accidents caused by driving over the speed limit.
Drivers like you often attribute lower speed to more safety. Please don't let the number on your dashboard let you believe you can be less aware of your surroundings as someone who is speeding. Most near accidents I see are caused by slow, inattentive drivers

I do agree, I am the best driver in the world until that one time for whatever reason I am not. I think it is good to keep in mind that it only takes one time to be the worst ever. Regarding speed, in France the highway is about 80miles/h, which is in some cases kind of slow. But the target being to get to your destination in one living piece, I think it is fast enough. Personal note, never ever drive if you are tired. Enjoy your ride.
In Japan all cars are limited to 180kmh (~111mph) but this can somewhat easily be by-passed

Couple months ago my rental with "smart cuise control"/ISA (apparently by default it is on) tried to speed to 60 mph in 50 mph road on every speed camera. Reason: it did not understand winter speed limits consept we have in Finland. If the car would of had its will, I would of had at least €600 (€200 a pop minimum nowadays) fines and lost my licence for couple of months. Yes, it actually tried to accelerate just before each speed camera.

Happy New Year Scotty! On our last vacation in the US we were keeping up with traffic on the I75 from Tampa towards Sarasota at 85 MPH. I understand that this speeding in the USA. Albeit, in Chile there are private highways, where the top speed is 130 Kph or 80 MPH. There is probably a tolerance of ±10 KPH to 85 MPH. The cars that use your highways which were in great condition on the I75. Compared to our fleet in Costa Rica, where I live, of over 16 years of age on the average, it might be due time to increase the speed limits in your gorgeous and prosperous country! Your new trucks are no exception. Most were driving at the flow of the traffic and seemed in great condition and using the central or right hand side lane. I don't believe that my 1995 GMC Jimmy with 350,000 Km could be driven at 85 MPH, but my 2012 Volvo S60 T4 with a 1.6 liter Ford engine might be checked mechanically to do so. However, if there was a bullet train from Tampa to Orlando which was my longest ride on the same day, I would have been more keen of using it rather than speeding on the way to Sarasota!
Interestingly enough, lawmakers in Austin Texas recently lowered a lot of speed limit signs throughout the city to try and minimize the fatal crashes. Although I think this is a great idea, at the same time, I don’t think it would do much to minimize this issue, because so many people are used to speeding.

Speed limits set in the 50-60s. Cars have advance since then. The required stopping from 60 was 300ft, my little Mazda3 AWD hatch can stop in 112ft. Even better now with P Zero AS Plus than the OE Toyo eco tires.

I have always been a guy who runs anywhere from 5 mph over to double the speed limit depending upon the situation and time and place. Safety first and yeah I know increased Speed Kills but so does driving the speed limit.
I grew up raising hell in Kansas City Missouri with my 77 Firebird and 77 Camaro. So I've been doing it since I was 15 years old and never had a license until I was 21.
Same here man. People get furious of how I drive on the road. But what they don't realize is that driving is a skill. Alot of people LAck the awareness to drive at speed. But if you know what you're doing it's really not that dangerous. The biggest danger to me is still other people who are absolutely clueless as to what's going on around them. People are really stupid. There are few of us who are truly in tune with the road

I remember when Nevada didnt have a speed limit. 110 is all i wanted to do on a two lane blacktop outside of Vegas. The problem with going over 100mph is that the road seems to get narrower.😮
I once passed a Farmall H with another Farmall H on a paved road, on the way to a tractor ride, both in 5th gear (16 MPH). He had dual tires on it which may have slowed him down some. Later that day, on the tractor ride, I was passed by a John Deere B on a dirt road, on hill which was too steep for me to run 5th gear in without stalling. 4th gear is for fieldwork.
I autocross and generally get between 8th and 15th place out of 100-130 cars... I am literally better than most drivers. Zero accidents in 35 years of driving. And I speed- but the last ticket I got was almost 20 years ago. Top speed on a US road, 168MPH in a 1994 Mitsubishi 3000GT VR4 Twin Turbo.
The biggest scam is 4 cylinder economy cars having 160mph speedometers.
Even if you go 80mph half the speedometer remains entirely useless and I think it unintentionally encourages speeding since the needle doesn't move as much compared to older cars that had 110mph speedos

How does the computer know when I am making a passing maneuver? In my state, one is legally allowed to exceed the speed limit temporarily to execute a pass more efficiently.
Excellent video, start to finish. Your statement that "It's up to us, individually" is quite true, from the training, to the purchase of vehicles, the maintenance of them, & their operation. I've been in three accidents, 2 as a passenger, 1 as a driver. #1, my brother drove through a T-intersection without stopping back in the no-seatbelt days...that was "fun" as my head broke the windshield. #2, In Korea, taxi driver ahead of me pulled out of my lane to the left lane, then changed (almost) immediately his mind as I closed the gap, and of course as soon as he did the car in front of both of us slammed its brakes; I scratched the Taxi's right-rear fender (my fault according to KNP), #3, Wife was driving (Korea again), and dumb dude in nice sports car zoomed past probably 20 cars then tried to cut in on my wife's minivan to exit in heavy traffic. She wasn't having it, and the guy ended up hitting our van. In my cases, high speed was irrelevant. However, as a Honda Fit driver, I take spacing seriously because I'm surrounded by large SUVs driven by people simultaneously texting and sucking on lattes as they race to get in front of me on a heavily stop-lighted road. It's definitely the software problem in the human skull. Won't matter too much how cars are manufactured for speed, if the vehicle controller is out of control.
I speed a lot. Especially on back roads where I live - where basically no one else lives or even goes … I feel I have the right to expose my own self to risks.. but I don’t have the right to expose others to it.

I have a car that has a sweet spot at 90mph, drive out skirt of one town into larger city is 25 miles almost everyone is 10-20 over. The Nimrods in left lane appear to never want to speed, this causes lots of lane changes. Crashes are on ramps and red light runners. It’s not me but I see it.🍀

I'm guilty... Back in the days when it was new took a V6 2011 Chevy Camaro to 166 mph on a nearly empty interstate. Ran out of road, maybe could have squeezed out another 5-10 if I had kept going. While it felt amazing and actually handled very well I wouldn't advise it and I have even had remorseful thoughts later. Thinking of what damage I could have done or even how life threatening it actually was. I now try to keep it under 140mph.
In Denver Colorado the city wide speed limit is now 20MPH unless otherwise posted but no enforcement of this law is going on just wasting taxpayers money on more useless signage

In most industrial countries (not in the USA) actually have requirements to go through classes before beginning on road training. My family lived in Spain when my kids were able to attend these. When we returned to the US our insurance dropped their rates ny 30%. Shocking when they learned how to drive manual transmission vehicles , parallel parking on roads designed for horse and carriage (Cadiz is a 2000+ year led city with granite curbs). Time for formal practical training for really everyone.
I had "driver's education" courses, both class and on the road, when I was 16. They may not have them anymore----lest they miss their class in CRT or gender studies.
Considering that it's easier to limit the capability of the vehicle (i.e. limiters, etc.) rather than the driver (which is the cause of speeding), limiters may end up being necessary. I doubt that there will be a reduction in speed limits anytime soon (like there were during the Energy Crisis of the 1970's). Educating the driving public would be the best way to reduce speeding, but it's likely not going to have the results needed.
Fast cars, under skilled drivers. Few years back some auto manufacturers offered driving classes when u bought certain model vehicles, this way you learned how to handle the HP. Now manufacturers are selling massively larger HP vehicles w/no training. Now the limiter is a great tool that I remember in an old BMW, reaving close to the red it would baug down so u wouldn't damage the engine. Which in turn reminded you to slow down. Speed limits are maxed at 70. I'm sore most accidents happen during the HOW FAST CAN I GET TO 70. Nothing wrong with a little reminder to slow it down and save lives, it could be yours.
So far my fastest land speed is a gps indicated 222mph on a 2015 Kawasaki Ninja ZX14R done up by Predator Racing. You’re not a red-blooded human male if you don’t like the thrill of speed. 😉
Drove from Frankfort to Bochum at 160 approx. and still got passed by Porsche and Lambos. No eating, talking or radio, just pure concentration. Hell of a thrill though. Excellent country.

I don’t know about if my skill level is above but my polite driving is. If someone wants into the lane I’m in I let them and give them plenty of room to do it. I drive a Charger R/T road and track. I rarely go over 80 but I’ll admit I like getting from 40-70 as fast as possible. Acceleration even at lower speeds is more fun than going 130 to me. I like getting pulled back in my seat but going fast is too risky.

Made it from Tomball, Tx to Corpus Christi Texas at rush hour in under 2 hours I averaged 111 MPH. That was the early 90's now that I'm older I hardly drive over 75 MPH anymore except when I'm passing someone who is going under the speed limit.
I have a "governor" on my 04 dodge Dakota truck to where the throttle can only open 1/4 of the way and it works fine. I reduced the size of the tires and I love it! It's a cruiser now and it makes me super careful of how I drive... (Especially avoiding the other idiots)

I've seen multiple accidents on the street I live on over the years. Why do the posted speed limit of 30 in a business/ residential area when you can do 60, 70 or, more and run into buildings, concrete planters and trees and roll your vehicle?
None of these morons learned anything from the young girl that went speeding down this street on sunny afternoon on a straight dry street hitting the front of the hospital killing the 2 passengers in the back seat of her car and she ruined the life of the man who's job it was to just park cars at the hospital who was sitting inside the hospital doing his job.
I've been driving for many years and I don't understand how some of these geniuses even end up in the single vehicle wrecks that they do.

Had a coworker that was talking about going to the next big city over. They said, "...and if there aren't any cops around, you can do 90 most of the way, and get there sooner!" And that, friends and neighbors, is exactly why we have a high fatality rate on our roads: this person has neither the skill, nor the vehicle, to travel that fast on the road. Basically, they are a (barely) guided missile when they're driving.😮
it's the difference in speed between cars, one doing 100 next to the guy doing 55. That is why autobahn is so safe, people drive according to fast and slow lanes. Your whole comment does not take that into account. It only assumes speed is the problem.
In Canada commercial trucks were governed to 65 mph 15 years ago and first year commercial truck accidents went down 40% it’s still in place today
to be fair in florida we’re allowed to drive on main roads with an adult in the car after just a quick course, online test, and visit to the DMV. never in the course does it say anything about how to drive a car, just about the laws
