    Autumn Sown Sweet Peas | Grow now for stronger plants | Eagle Sweet Peas | Green Side Up
    I have conflicting advice for you here, conflicting against myself. I grow sweet peas twice a year in spring and autumn, In spring I use root trainers and soak the seed, in autumn I dont think root trainers provide enough area for the plants to grow, so I use a much bigger pot and sow dry seeds, find out more in the video...it'll all make sense then.

    Hi Steve, talking about confusing and conflicting advice, the latest Amateur Gardening magazine has a piece on sweetpeas which includes this gem: “don’t sew in the autumn in the north as winter light levels are not good enough”. Ever heard that one before? And “north” of what: England, the UK, Europe, where? 🤪

    • @GreenSideUp
      @GreenSideUp  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I have tried many over the years, in the last couple of years, sharpies have worked well but do fade towards the end of the season. I am now trying another garden marker from Artline, they come highly recomended by fellow plot holders on my allotment site. I bought a 12 pack so I could make sure I have one in every tunnel and or coat/jacket, extreme I know but it ensures my test will be complete. So far so good, but I only got them a month ago. This is a link to a twelve pack but you can use the information to buy a smaller quantity amzn.to/3FKl7iS It should be noted I have tried many types of pens pencils and labels over the years and I have never yet found a perfect combination for what I need and ask of the systems...Steve...😃

    I tried this end of ‘23 and it just hasn’t worked for me😔 Gave up after 3 attempts 🤷🏻‍♀️ This was with different brands and followed instructions on Eagle Sweet Peas ( Those little bags they sell for planting on their website are biodegradable , which is great! ) I think it’s because it’s so warm this winter but they germinated quickly with no soaking or faffing and then they take off into weedy pale leggy plants 😭 Fingers crossed I can get it right in spring!!😅🤓

  • @amassing
    @amassing 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Hi Steve, what's the size/capacity of the poly pots you're using? Is there any particular reason you use them rather than regular square plastic pots? You make a good point about the sweet peas running out of feed by early spring - other videos and articles on autumn sowing hardy annuals never seem to mention this. I've been using the osmocote slow release granules mixed into the compost but even so I sometimes have to pot them on again in Feb to keep the plants healthy whilst waiting for the ground to be warm enough to plant out.

    • @GreenSideUp
      @GreenSideUp  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Andrew, I have been frantically searching away for where I bought these polybags originally and I cannot find a trace. They are 1/2 litre size and are approx 4 inch square when filled, nearly 5 inches tall. I use the polypots simply to make it easier with stacking multiples together in trays. 4 inch pots I think would work well, whilst 3 inches I think would be too small. Tony over at Simplyfy gardening has just posted about using root trainers to sow in, he is not too shabby at gardening 😁😁 th-cam.com/video/Sw6416EDzZU/w-d-xo.html . I use the bigger pots because I dont want them to run out of steam, they will still need feeding and sometimes even potting on, I will do that in January if needed...Steve...😃
